Nintendo says the game icon then appears on the HOME menu with a download-status indicator.
Choose the user carefully: the code is assigned to the Nintendo Account linked to that user and cannot later be transferred to another user. The exact menu wording can differ by country or software version; Nintendo support pages use both Enter Code and Redeem Code.

What you need before entering a Nintendo eShop code
Have these items ready before opening the store:
- A Nintendo Switch connected to the internet.
- The 16-character Nintendo download code, usually printed on a retailer receipt or card.
- A Nintendo Account linked to a Switch user.
- An account country and Nintendo eShop region where the code is eligible.
- A code intended for Nintendo Switch software or content, rather than a code restricted to another system or a third-party service.
If multiple people use the console, decide in advance which Nintendo Account should receive the game. Once redeemed, the content is managed by that account. Selecting a different user later does not move ownership.

- Connect the Switch to the internet. Confirm that the console is online before opening the store. A download code cannot be checked or downloaded while the console is offline.
- Open Nintendo eShop. From the HOME menu, select the orange Nintendo eShop icon.
- Select the intended user. Choose the Switch user linked to the Nintendo Account that should own the game. This choice matters because the redeemed content is tied to that account.
- Open the code-entry screen. In the eShop’s left-hand menu, select Enter Code or Redeem Code. Nintendo uses both labels in its support documentation, and wording can vary by region or interface version.
- Enter the 16-character code. Type the characters exactly as they appear on the receipt or card. If the card has spaces or separators for readability, enter the characters in the format requested on screen.
- Confirm the redemption. Review the account and title shown by the eShop, then confirm. The software icon should appear on the HOME menu with a download-status indicator. Leave the Switch connected to the internet until the download is complete.
If the game does not begin downloading immediately, look at the HOME menu for its icon and status indicator. A slow or paused download is different from a rejected code; check the error message before trying to redeem the code again.

Where the redeemed game belongs
Nintendo’s support guidance explains that redeemed content is managed by the Nintendo Account linked to the selected user. It is not a transferable token that another Switch user can claim later. On a shared console, therefore, selecting the wrong profile can put the game on the wrong account even though the code itself was entered correctly.
Before you confirm
- Read the selected user’s name on the eShop screen.
- Check that the Nintendo Account is the one used for the intended player’s purchases.
- Do not enter the code on a guest or temporary profile if another account should own it.
If the same Nintendo Account is used on another compatible Switch console, Nintendo’s account system—not the physical receipt or card—records the redemption. The code itself should be treated as a one-time entitlement once successfully accepted.
Can you redeem the code online without the Switch?
Yes. Nintendo provides an online redemption route for people who do not currently have access to the console. Sign in to Nintendo’s code-redemption page with the Nintendo Account that should own the game, verify the account identity, enter the 16-digit code, and confirm.

There is an important prerequisite: Nintendo says the account must have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 at least once before the browser route can be used. If the account has never opened eShop on either console, redeem the code from the console first instead.
| Option | What you need | Best use | Account check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch eShop | Internet-connected Switch, code, and linked user | You have the console and want to see the selected profile before confirming | Select the user at eShop launch |
| Online redemption | Browser access, Nintendo Account sign-in, and 16-digit code | You are away from the console | Sign in to the account that should own the content |
The online page does not remove the region or platform rules. A code still has to be eligible for the Nintendo Account’s eShop and for the software system named by the code.
Does a Nintendo eShop code have to match your region?
Yes. Nintendo Support’s Americas troubleshooting guidance states: “A download code can only be redeemed on a Nintendo eShop set to the same region as the game.” The Nintendo Account’s country setting determines which eShop region it uses.
A code from another region can fail even when every character was entered correctly. Check the region printed on the card, receipt, or retailer listing against the country and eShop region of the Nintendo Account before troubleshooting the characters.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What to check when the regions do not match
- Identify the country or region for which the code was sold.
- Check the Nintendo Account’s country setting and the eShop region it opens.
- Confirm that the game or downloadable content is intended for that same region.
- If they differ, contact the seller or Nintendo Support rather than repeatedly entering the code.
Changing an account country is not a guaranteed fix for an ineligible code. Eligibility depends on Nintendo’s region rules and the code’s terms; do not assume that switching countries will make every imported code work.

Switch and Switch 2 compatibility rules
Nintendo states that codes for Nintendo Switch software can also be redeemed in the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop. The reverse is not generally true: Nintendo Switch 2 software, downloadable content, and upgrade packs cannot be redeemed in the Nintendo Switch eShop.
| Code type | Original Nintendo Switch eShop | Nintendo Switch 2 eShop |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch software | Eligible when the region and account requirements match | Nintendo says Switch software codes can also be redeemed here |
| Nintendo Switch 2-only software | Not redeemable | Use the Switch 2 eShop |
| Switch 2 downloadable content or upgrade pack | Not redeemable | Use the Switch 2 eShop when the code and region are eligible |
If an apparently valid code is rejected on an original Switch, check the product description and release information for a Switch 2-only designation before assuming the code is damaged.
Why a Switch code is not working
The on-screen error is the best clue. Work through the matching branch below instead of entering the same code repeatedly.
“The code has already been used”
First check whether the game is already downloading or whether its icon is present on the HOME menu. Also check the account’s content or redemption history. If several users share the console, open each relevant user’s eShop account and check there; another Nintendo Account may have redeemed the code.
A successful redemption is attached to the account that used it. If the title is in another user’s history, signing into your preferred user does not make the code available again.
The code was entered incorrectly
Compare every character with the receipt or card and re-enter it slowly. Nintendo’s Japanese Switch 2 instructions say eShop codes do not use the letters O, I, or Z, which helps distinguish similar-looking characters. That rule should not automatically be applied to every third-party service code, because providers can use different formats.
Check for a character that was obscured by a scratch, print quality, or a photograph of the receipt. If a character cannot be read, ask the retailer that issued the code for help rather than guessing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt is not a Nintendo eShop code
Some cards and messages contain codes for a third-party service, subscription, in-game currency, or another provider rather than a Nintendo eShop download code. Nintendo says those codes require the provider’s own redemption instructions. Confirm the code type on the receipt or card before using the Nintendo eShop entry screen.

The region is wrong
Recheck the code’s sales region and the Nintendo Account country. Nintendo’s region rule applies even when the game title is available in both countries. A seller may have supplied a legitimate code that is simply not eligible for your eShop.
The game or content has not been released
Some codes are issued before a product’s release date. Check the release date and any instructions supplied with the code. A code for unreleased content may not redeem until Nintendo makes that content available.
The code is for Switch 2-only content
Verify whether the code covers Switch 2 software, downloadable content, or an upgrade pack. Those items cannot be redeemed in the original Switch eShop. Use the Switch 2 eShop when the code’s region and account also qualify.
The code expired or was never activated
Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance includes expiration and retailer activation among possible causes. A card can be printed correctly yet fail if the retailer did not activate it at purchase, or if the code’s validity period has ended. Keep the receipt and contact the retailer for an activation or expiration investigation, then follow Nintendo Support’s instructions for the exact error.
How to check the account before redeeming
Account selection is the most important decision on the console because it determines ownership. Use this short check immediately before entering the code:
- Exit to HOME if you are unsure which profile is active.
- Open Nintendo eShop again and read the user-selection screen.
- Choose the profile linked to the intended Nintendo Account.
- Confirm that the eShop loads the expected country or region.
- Only then open Enter Code or Redeem Code.
If you are redeeming in a browser, sign out of any unrelated Nintendo Account first, then sign in to the intended account and verify its identity before entering the code.
Understanding the code format and labels
Nintendo describes its download codes as 16-character codes. Online redemption instructions may call the same entry a 16-digit code, while retailer receipts and cards can add spaces or separators to make the characters easier to read. Use the exact sequence shown by the seller and follow the spacing format requested by the screen rather than adding punctuation yourself.
The code-entry command may also be named Enter Code or Redeem Code. These labels refer to the same part of the eShop for this task. If you do not see one wording, look for the other in the left-side menu instead of assuming the feature is unavailable.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not confuse a Nintendo eShop download code with a Nintendo Account password, a retailer order number, a subscription code, or a code for a third-party service. Only the Nintendo eShop download code belongs in this screen; other providers publish separate redemption instructions.
Redeeming a code bought from a retailer
Retail download codes commonly arrive on a receipt or a physical card. Keep the receipt until the game is visible on the HOME menu and the download has started. The receipt can show the sales region, product name, activation status, and the characters needed for entry.
If the retailer supplied a code that was never activated, Nintendo’s eShop may reject it even though the printed characters are correct. Return to the retailer with proof of purchase and request an activation check. If the retailer confirms activation but the code still fails, retain its response and provide the exact eShop error to Nintendo Support.

Shared consoles and multiple accounts
On a family or shared Switch, the user selected when Nintendo eShop opens determines which linked Nintendo Account receives the game. A code redeemed by one family member does not become available for another profile merely because both profiles use the same console.
If you are unsure who redeemed a code, check each relevant user’s HOME menu and account content or redemption history. This is especially important after an error saying the code was already used: the code may have worked on another profile and started downloading there.
For browser redemption, close unrelated Nintendo Account sessions or use a private sign-in window, then verify the account identity before confirming. The browser route is convenient, but it gives you fewer visual cues than selecting a user at eShop launch, so account checking is essential.

What to do if the code still fails
After checking the account, code characters, code type, region, platform, release date, and retailer activation, stop trying random variations. Record the exact error message, retain the receipt or card, and contact the seller or Nintendo Support through the support route for your region. Include the platform named by the code and the country setting of the Nintendo Account so support can distinguish a formatting problem from an eligibility problem.

Quick checklist
- Switch is online.
- The 16-character code is available and readable.
- The selected user is linked to the Nintendo Account that should own the game.
- The code’s region matches the Nintendo Account’s eShop region.
- The code is for Nintendo Switch software if you are using the original Switch eShop.
- You have checked whether the title is unreleased, expired, or awaiting retailer activation.
- You have confirmed that the code is a Nintendo eShop code, not a third-party service code.
Key points to remember
For the normal console process, open Nintendo eShop from HOME, choose the correct user first, select the code-entry option, enter the 16-character code, and confirm. The selected Nintendo Account receives the content. A browser option exists after that account has accessed eShop on a Switch or Switch 2, but online redemption does not bypass region or platform restrictions. When a code fails, check account ownership, characters, code type, region, release status, Switch-versus-Switch 2 compatibility, expiration, and retailer activation in that order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I enter a Nintendo eShop code on Switch?
Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME menu, select the user whose Nintendo Account should own the game, then choose Enter Code or Redeem Code in the left-side menu. Enter the 16-character code and confirm.
Can I redeem a Nintendo Switch game code online?
Yes. Sign in to Nintendo’s online redemption page with the intended Nintendo Account, verify the account, enter the 16-digit code, and confirm. That account must have opened Nintendo eShop on a Switch or Switch 2 at least once.
Does my Nintendo eShop code have to match my region?
Yes. Nintendo says a download code can only be redeemed on an eShop set to the same region as the game. Check the code’s sales region against the Nintendo Account country and eShop region.
Can I redeem a Switch 2 code on an original Switch?
No, not when the code is for Switch 2-only software, downloadable content, or an upgrade pack. Nintendo Switch software codes can be redeemed in the Switch 2 eShop, but Switch 2-only codes require the Switch 2 eShop.
What if the code says it has already been used?
Check whether the game is already downloading or appears on the HOME menu, then review content or redemption history. On a shared console, another user may have redeemed it. A successfully redeemed code cannot be reused on a different account.
What should I do if I cannot read one character?
Compare the code with the receipt or card and ask the issuing retailer for help if a character is scratched out or unclear. Nintendo’s Switch 2 instructions say eShop codes do not use O, I, or Z, but third-party services may use different formats.
Why does a valid-looking code fail at checkout?
Check that it is a Nintendo eShop code, that the region matches, that the product has been released, that the code is for the system you are using, and that the retailer activated it. Expiration and retailer activation are also possible causes.
Can I move a redeemed game to another Switch user?
No. Nintendo ties the redeemed content to the Nintendo Account linked to the user selected during redemption. Choosing another profile later does not transfer ownership.
The Bottom Line
Open Nintendo eShop, select the correct user, choose Enter Code or Redeem Code, enter the 16-character code, and confirm. If it fails, check the account, region, code type, platform, release status, expiration, and retailer activation before contacting support.
