The correct redemption steps depend on how you received the book. An emailed Kindle gift is accepted from the gift notification, a prepaid eBook is accepted through its redemption link, and a zero-price Kindle Store listing is a separate purchase flow. After acceptance, use the same Amazon account on your Kindle app or device, sync it, clear library filters, and manually deliver the title if necessary.
Identify which kind of free Kindle book you have
Before tapping anything, identify the delivery method. Amazon uses different systems for a free store listing, an emailed gift, and a prepaid eBook link. Using gift instructions on a store listing, or looking for a link when you received a gift email, can leave the title unclaimed or attached to the wrong account.

Amazon’s general gifting information also distinguishes these products by marketplace. Single-copy gifts use a redemption code in the United States and links in India, while prepaid eBooks use links in supported marketplaces. A prepaid eBook requires the buyer and recipient to live in the same country. A free Store listing is not the same thing as a purchased gift.

- An email that says you received a Kindle book gift and contains a redemption control is an emailed gift.
- An email or card containing a dedicated URL and instructions to accept an eBook is a prepaid link.
- A book you found by browsing the Kindle Store, with a displayed price of zero, is a normal Store listing rather than a gift.
What you need before redeeming
Use the Amazon account that should own the title. If you have several household or regional accounts, sign out of the others before opening the redemption page. A gift or prepaid acceptance is associated with the account used during acceptance; switching accounts afterward will make the title appear to be missing.

You do not need dedicated Kindle hardware to redeem a gift. Amazon says a supported Amazon device or a Kindle reading app can receive and read the book. A phone, tablet, or computer with the Kindle app is sufficient for reading, although a dedicated e-reader can receive the title after it is registered to the same account.
Keep an internet connection available. Amazon requires connectivity to purchase, download, or synchronize Kindle books. If you are on a restricted workplace, hotel, or public network, try a normal home or mobile connection if a page will not load or a device will not sync.
Redeem an emailed Kindle book gift
Use this procedure only when the sender delivered a Kindle gift notification. Do not substitute it for a zero-price Store listing.
- Open the gift notification email in the inbox where it was delivered. If you cannot find it, search for a Kindle gift message and check spam or filtered folders.
- Select Redeem your gift in the message.
- On the Amazon page, select Redeem now.
- Sign in to the Amazon account that should receive the book. Check the account name or email before continuing, particularly if a shared device has saved another person’s session.
- When Amazon asks where to deliver the title, select the supported Amazon device registered to that account. If you primarily read in an app, choose the account and then sync the app; the exact device choices depend on what is registered.
- Open the Kindle app or selected device and synchronize it. If the title is not visible, follow the missing-library procedure below rather than redeeming the email again.
When the gift cannot be delivered across countries
Amazon warns that copyright restrictions can make a Kindle gift unavailable in the recipient’s country. In that situation, the redemption page may offer an Amazon.com Gift Card exchange instead of delivering the book. That is a country and rights restriction, not a failed sync. The recipient should follow the option Amazon presents; repeatedly opening the email will not bypass the restriction.
Redeem a prepaid eBook link
A prepaid eBook has a link rather than the emailed-gift controls. The link may be in a notification email or printed on a card.

- Open the notification link, or type the printed redemption address into a browser exactly as supplied.
- Sign in to the Amazon account that should own the title. Confirm the account before accepting; the book will be associated with this account.
- Select Accept this eBook.
- Open the Kindle app and look in the library. Amazon says a prepaid eBook becomes immediately readable in the Kindle app after acceptance.
- On another Kindle app or e-reader registered to the same account, synchronize the library. The title should be available in Cloud or Archived Items for download.
Why a prepaid link may fail
- Different country: The link may be limited to the marketplace and country for which it was issued. Amazon says the buyer and recipient must live in the same country for prepaid eBooks.
- Already redeemed: A single link cannot be accepted again after it has been used.
- Refund requested: Amazon says a sender’s refund request can invalidate the link.
- Wrong account: If you accepted while signed in to another Amazon account, sign into that account to locate the title; it will not automatically move to a different account.
Do not post a prepaid link publicly. Anyone who uses it first may consume the redemption, leaving the intended recipient with an already-used link.
Claiming a free Kindle Store listing
A zero-price Store listing is not redeemed through the gift-email or prepaid-link screens. Amazon’s customer support material clearly documents those two redemption methods but does not publish a fixed, current customer-side sequence for claiming an ordinary zero-price listing. Store labels can therefore differ by marketplace, device, and promotion.
To claim one, open the listing in the Amazon marketplace where your account is registered, sign in to the account that should own it, and follow the current on-page control for completing the zero-price purchase. Read the final confirmation carefully: it should show the intended account and a zero amount before you submit. Do not enter a gift code unless the page specifically asks for one. If the listing instead asks for payment, the promotion may have ended, may be limited to another marketplace, or may not be available to your account.
After the Store order is completed, look in Your Orders > Digital Orders if the book does not arrive. An incomplete digital order or unresolved payment status can prevent the item from being added to the library, even when the displayed price was zero. The Store page itself is the authority for the current offer; author promotion schedules do not guarantee that a reader will see a free price.
Find the accepted book in the Kindle app
Once acceptance or the Store order is complete, use the library controls before assuming the title is lost.

- Open the Kindle app and select Library.
- Switch to All rather than a downloaded-only, unread, or custom collection view.
- Clear active filters. A filter can hide a newly accepted title even though the account owns it.
- Search for the exact title. If the search returns several editions, check the author and cover shown in the result.
- Sort by Recent to bring newly added items to the top.
- With an internet connection active, open More > Sync or choose Sync Now, depending on the app version.
If the title appears with a download icon, tap it to download. If it appears in the library but will not open, leave the app connected until the download completes, then try again.
Find it on a Kindle e-reader
On a Kindle e-reader, connect to Wi-Fi and run the device synchronization command. Depending on the software version, the menu is labeled Settings > Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items. Return to the library and search by title; a newly delivered book may be in the Cloud view rather than on the device.
If the book is listed in the account but not downloaded, select it to download over Wi-Fi. A book that was delivered to a different registered device will remain available to the account but may need to be delivered or downloaded on the e-reader you are holding.
Force delivery from Manage Your Content and Devices
When syncing does not make the title appear, use Amazon’s account-level delivery controls. This is useful when the book is owned but has not been sent to the selected app or e-reader.
- Open Manage Your Content and Devices in your Amazon account.
- Select Content, then Books.
- Find the accepted title. Search by title or sort the list if necessary.
- Open the item’s action menu and choose Deliver or remove from device.
- Select the registered Kindle device or app that should receive it.
- Choose Make Changes.
- Return to the app or e-reader and run its sync command again.
This process does not redeem a second copy. It tells Amazon where to deliver a book already associated with the account.

Troubleshoot a missing title by symptom
The title is absent from Library
First switch to Library > All, clear filters, search by title, and sync. If that fails, check Manage Your Content and Devices > Content > Books. If the title is listed there, use Deliver or remove from device and Make Changes, then sync again.
The title is absent from Manage Your Content and Devices
Open Your Orders > Digital Orders. Look for an incomplete order or a payment-status problem. Resolve the order issue shown by Amazon, then allow the account to update and repeat the library sync. For a gift or prepaid link, also verify that you completed the acceptance button rather than merely opening the email or link.
The book is on another device but not this one
Check that both devices use the same Amazon account and that the destination device is registered. Use account-level delivery to select the correct device, then run its sync command. A book can be owned by the account without being downloaded to every registered device.
The app cannot connect or synchronize
Confirm Wi-Fi or mobile data, disable any offline mode, and retry More > Sync. If the network blocks Amazon services, switch connections. Do not uninstall the app as a first step; account and delivery checks usually identify the problem without removing locally stored books.

Run Settings > Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items. If the title remains absent, restart the e-reader and check for a software update, then sync again. The update and restart steps address device-side indexing or software problems after account delivery has been confirmed.
The redemption page says the offer is unavailable
For a gift, the recipient’s country may not match the title’s rights. For a prepaid link, country mismatch, prior redemption, or a sender-requested refund can invalidate access. For a Store listing, the free promotion may have ended or be restricted to another marketplace. Verify the account marketplace and the exact message Amazon displays before contacting the sender or Amazon support.
Timing, promotions, and what “free” does not promise
A prepaid eBook is described by Amazon as immediately readable in the Kindle app after acceptance. Other devices still need a connection and synchronization. Amazon’s support guidance does not promise a universal number of minutes for every gift, Store order, or device delivery, so do not treat a delay as proof that the redemption failed.
Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing guidance concerns authors’ promotions, not a reader’s redemption clock. It states that an author can run a free promotion for up to five days per 90-day KDP Select enrollment period, and that transitions between free and paid lists can take up to 24 hours. Those figures describe promotion administration and list changes; they are not a guarantee that a reader’s accepted book will appear after either interval.
A reliable end-to-end checklist
- Classify the access as Store listing, gift email, or prepaid link.
- Use the Amazon account and marketplace intended to own the title.
- For a gift, choose Redeem your gift, then Redeem now.
- For a prepaid link, choose Accept this eBook.
- For a zero-price listing, follow the current Store page and confirm the final amount is zero; do not use gift instructions.
- Open Library > All, clear filters, search the title, and sort by Recent.
- Sync the app with More > Sync or Sync Now; on an e-reader use Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items.
- If necessary, deliver the book through Manage Your Content and Devices > Content > Books > Deliver or remove from device, then choose Make Changes.
- If the title is missing from account content, inspect Your Orders > Digital Orders for an incomplete order or payment issue.
- For country, used-link, or refund errors, resolve the eligibility problem rather than repeating sync attempts.
The central test is whether the title is present in the same Amazon account that your app or e-reader is using. Once ownership is confirmed, filters, synchronization, and manual delivery account for most library delays.
