The correct redemption path depends on the kind of code you received. A Bethesda promotional code is normally entered on your Bethesda.net account page. Most unused Bethesda game keys should be activated in Steam because of Bethesda’s May 11, 2022 migration. A successful Steam activation places the game in that Steam account’s Library. The Elder Scrolls Online and some other title-specific codes can use separate instructions, so identify the title and platform before entering anything.
These steps apply whether the code came from a legitimate giveaway, an event, an offer email, or a purchase confirmation. They do not mean that a free-game promotion is currently running; they explain how to redeem a code you already have.

Choose the right redemption route first
“Bethesda code” can describe more than one thing. A promotional code intended for Bethesda.net is not interchangeable with a Steam product key, and an Elder Scrolls Online code may follow its own account process. Using the wrong service is the most common reason a valid code appears to be invalid.

The destination determines where ownership is recorded. A key activated on Steam will be found in Steam’s Library, not necessarily in Bethesda.net purchase history. Conversely, a reward claimed on Bethesda.net may need the same Bethesda account when you launch the game or check an in-game inventory.

Bethesda describes promotional codes as codes that may be distributed at in-person events, streaming events, giveaways, or directly by Bethesda. Those are possible sources, not a guarantee that an offer is available now. The official promotional-code instructions are at Bethesda Support’s promotional-code page.
Prepare before entering the code
Take a minute to establish where the game should belong. Digital entitlements are normally attached to the account that completes redemption, and moving a used code to another account is generally not possible.
- Read the offer or email carefully. Look for words such as “Steam key,” “Bethesda.net,” “PlayStation,” “Xbox,” “Epic,” or a title-specific account name.
- Confirm the intended account. Sign out of extra browser profiles and Steam accounts so you do not accidentally claim the game elsewhere.
- Keep the code exactly as supplied. Preserve dashes, capitalization where relevant, and every character. Do not add spaces at the beginning or end.
- Keep the source message. A purchase or offer email may contain platform instructions, an expiry condition, or a second code for bonus content.
- Check the title. A code for a game, a downloadable add-on, and an in-game reward can have different destinations.
- Use the current services. Bethesda’s retired launcher is not the destination for redeeming an unused key. The account may still be required for live services, but the launcher’s closure does not remove the account.
If more than one person uses the device, verify the account name immediately before submission. A successful redemption can look like a technical error later if you are checking a different profile. Keep the original email or receipt until the entitlement is visible; it is the best evidence of the advertised title, platform, and code source.
Redeem a Bethesda promotional code on Bethesda.net
Use this route when the offer explicitly calls the code a Bethesda promotional code or directs you to Bethesda.net. Bethesda’s interface labels can change slightly, but the account path is the one documented in its support instructions.
- Open Bethesda.net and sign in. Use the account that should receive the game or reward. If you do not have an account, create one and complete the sign-in process before attempting redemption.
- Open Account Management. Select your account username, then choose Account Management from the account menu.
- Select Redeem Code. Enter the code in the redemption field. Keep every dash exactly as shown and check for accidental spaces before submitting.
- Submit the code. Select Redeem and wait for the result rather than refreshing or resubmitting repeatedly.
- Confirm success. A successful submission displays “Success!” Keep that confirmation until you have verified the game or content.
- Check the account email. Bethesda says the email address associated with the account may receive additional instructions for a game or content code. Follow those instructions if they identify another required platform.
- Restart for an in-game reward. If the code unlocked an in-game item but it is not visible, fully exit the game and start it again. Bethesda specifically recommends a complete restart for this symptom.
A promotional code can represent a full game, an add-on, or a reward. The confirmation and follow-up email are more reliable than the code’s appearance for determining what was actually granted. If the email names Steam or another store after the Bethesda.net step, follow that second instruction rather than assuming the initial confirmation installed anything.
Redeem a Bethesda game key in Steam
Most unused Bethesda game keys should go through Steam under Bethesda’s post-migration guidance. This is the correct path when your purchase or offer confirmation identifies the code as a Steam key, or when Bethesda.net rejects a code that its instructions say should be used on Steam.
- Locate the Steam key. Check the purchase or offer confirmation email and any attached instructions. Do not confuse a Steam key with a separate Bethesda promotional code included in the same message.
- Sign in to the right Steam account. Open the Steam client and verify the account name. The game will be permanently associated with the account that activates the key.
- Open the product activation dialog. In the Steam client, select Games → Activate a Product on Steam….
- Follow Steam’s prompts. Accept the product-activation agreement when shown, then enter the key exactly as supplied. Retain all hyphens and avoid leading or trailing spaces.
- Complete activation. Steam will validate the key and identify the product if it is accepted. Allow the process to finish before closing the client.
- Verify the Library. Bethesda says a successfully activated game is added to the Steam Library. Search the Library by title, including hidden or uninstalled entries if necessary.
Bethesda’s support guidance records May 11, 2022 as the migration date after which most unused Bethesda keys and codes should be redeemed through Steam. Certain promotional codes remain exceptions and can still be intended for Bethesda.net. For a promotional code that fails on Bethesda.net, Bethesda advises trying Steam when the code’s instructions indicate that route; do not treat the migration date as proof that every code belongs on Steam. Handle The Elder Scrolls Online and other title-specific codes separately
The Elder Scrolls Online can use an ESO account and its own redemption flow. Do not paste an ESO code into the general Bethesda.net page or Steam activation dialog merely because the title is published by Bethesda. Instead, follow the account and platform named in the code’s instructions, and verify which account should receive the entitlement before submitting it.
The same caution applies to codes for console stores, Epic, or a particular edition. A code’s character pattern can offer a clue, but it is not proof of the destination. Bethesda’s invalid-code guidance describes Bethesda.net codes as five groups of four characters and notes that Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Epic formats differ. Treat those formats only as hints; the source instructions and title determine the correct service. A familiar-looking pattern cannot override an offer that explicitly names another platform.
Verify that the game was added
After Bethesda.net redemption
Look for the success confirmation, read the account email, and sign in to the same Bethesda account in the game or service that issued the reward. For an in-game item, exit completely and restart. If the offer was for a full game but the message describes only bonus content, re-check the title and edition in the email before assuming the game is missing.
After Steam activation
Open the Steam Library under the account used for activation and search for the exact title. Steam may list an uninstalled game alongside installed games; activation does not necessarily download it automatically. If the title is not visible, check that you are not viewing a different Steam account and search the Library rather than relying only on the recent-games list.

For title-specific services
Use the account page or launcher named by that title. An entitlement can be valid while appearing absent because it was claimed on a different platform account, region, or edition. The account that redeemed the code is the first place to investigate.
Troubleshoot an invalid or missing code
“Invalid code” appears immediately
First, stop retrying the same entry and identify the intended platform. Bethesda says most unused game keys moved to Steam redemption after the migration, while some promotional codes remain redeemable on Bethesda.net. Try the service specified by the offer. Re-enter the code manually, preserving dashes and removing accidental spaces. If the code is a console, Epic, ESO, or other title-specific code, use that service instead.
Format can help you spot a transcription mistake, but it cannot authenticate a code. Bethesda describes Bethesda.net codes as five groups of four characters, while Steam formats vary and PlayStation, Xbox, and Epic codes use their own patterns. Use those descriptions only to check whether you copied every character; always give priority to the platform named by the seller or event.

The code says it has already been used
A previously redeemed code cannot be activated again. Check the purchase history, confirmation email, and Library on the account that may have claimed it originally. If another household member or an old account used the key, the entitlement belongs there rather than to the account currently showing the error.

Sign out and back in to confirm the account identity, then inspect the account’s purchase history and Library. Bethesda recommends checking the correct account when a title is absent from purchase history or downloads. Also confirm that you are viewing the right platform: a Steam entitlement will not appear as a Bethesda.net purchase, and a console entitlement will not appear in Steam.
A second-hand or retailer-supplied key is already registered
Bethesda says a code registered to another account cannot be registered again. If a second-hand or retailer-supplied code reports prior use, contact the retailer or seller with your proof of purchase. Bethesda cannot make a used code transferable simply because the current holder has the printed or emailed key.
A promotional code still fails on the recommended services
Confirm the account, title, platform, and character sequence one more time. If the code still cannot be redeemed on the service Bethesda recommends, contact Bethesda Customer Support through the relevant support guidance. Include the exact error, the title, the platform named by the offer, and proof of legitimate distribution; never publish the full code in a public forum.
The game appears, but the reward does not
For an in-game reward redeemed through Bethesda.net, fully exit and restart the game. Check that you launched the title with the same linked account used during redemption. If the reward is tied to a specific character, server, edition, or mode, read the offer’s instructions for that condition before opening a support case.

Bethesda’s launcher closure does not mean Bethesda.net accounts disappeared. Bethesda says accounts remain needed for live titles such as Fallout 76 and other services. It does mean that the retired launcher should not be presented as the place to redeem an unused key. Use Bethesda.net for the promotional-code flow, Steam for most unused game keys, and the title’s stated service for exceptions. A quick decision procedure
- Read the code’s source. If it explicitly says Bethesda promotional code, start at Bethesda.net. If it says Steam key, start in Steam.
- Check the title. If it is ESO or another title with named account instructions, use those instructions instead of the generic route.
- Use the intended account. Confirm the Bethesda.net or Steam identity before submitting; ownership is attached to that account.
- Enter the characters exactly. Preserve dashes and avoid spaces.
- Record the result. Keep the “Success!” message or Steam activation confirmation and check the associated email.
- Verify the entitlement. Look in the correct Library, account history, or in-game account, then restart the game if a reward is missing.
- Escalate with evidence. If the code is invalid, already used, or tied to another account, use the retailer or Bethesda support route appropriate to that error.
Keep expectations realistic about “free” Bethesda games
Redeeming a free code does not require buying a controller, headset, physical manual, replacement part, or another product. You need the code, the correct account, and the platform named by the offer. A code can be free to claim while still requiring a supported account, a particular store, an internet connection for activation, or a separate download. Those requirements do not change the ownership result: the entitlement is recorded by the service that accepted the code.

Do not buy a second key merely because the first attempt failed. A wrong-platform error, an already-used code, or an account mismatch is more likely than a need for new hardware or another purchase. Identify the code type, follow the matching route, and preserve the original offer details before escalating.
