Never put a lithium-ion battery or a device containing one in household garbage or curbside recycling. Collection trucks and recycling-facility equipment can crush or damage batteries, causing fires. For an intact, removable battery, isolate the terminals with non-conductive tape (electrical tape is EPA’s preferred option) or place the battery by itself in a plastic bag, then take it to a location that explicitly accepts that battery type. Swollen, leaking, cracked, bent, crushed, overheated, malfunctioning, or recalled batteries need separate instructions from a manufacturer, retailer, household-hazardous-waste authority, or trained damaged-battery collection site.
This guide explains how to identify the battery, prepare it, choose a legitimate drop-off, handle devices with built-in batteries, and avoid the mistakes that cause fires.

Why lithium-ion batteries cannot go in normal bins
Lithium-ion cells store substantial energy in a compact package. When a battery is punctured, crushed, bent, or short-circuited, that energy can ignite nearby material. Garbage trucks and material-recovery facilities use compactors, conveyors, shredders, and other equipment that can damage a battery hidden in a bag or mixed with recyclables. A fire that starts in a truck or sorting plant can threaten workers, equipment, and an entire load.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states: “Lithium-ion batteries and devices containing these batteries should NOT go in household garbage or recycling bins.” That applies whether the battery is loose, still installed in a phone or laptop, or attached to another product. Curbside recycling is not a safer alternative to the trash.

Keep the battery out of both streams until you have confirmed a program that accepts its chemistry, size, condition, and format. Local waste rules can differ, so a site that accepts ordinary rechargeable batteries may still reject an e-bike pack, a damaged battery, or a device with the battery installed.
First decision: intact and removable, or a special case?
Do not start by searching for a drop-off box. First determine the battery’s condition and whether it is designed to be removed by the user.
Intact, removable batteries
An intact battery has no visible swelling, leak, crack, puncture, crushing, severe bend, overheating damage, unusual odor, or other malfunction. It is removable without forcing, prying, cutting, or dismantling the product. Examples include a spare phone battery designed for user replacement, a camera battery, and a separated power-tool pack.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThese batteries can usually follow the normal preparation and drop-off workflow described below, provided the selected site accepts that exact chemistry and size.
Damaged, defective, or recalled batteries
Treat a battery as a special case if it is swollen, leaking, cracked, punctured, crushed, bent, unusually hot, malfunctioning, or recalled. Do not tape its terminals and put it in an ordinary collection box. Tape is a transport-preparation measure for intact batteries; it does not make a damaged battery safe.
Keep the damaged battery away from flammable materials and stop normal preparation. Contact the battery or device manufacturer, the retailer, your local household-hazardous-waste authority, or a collection site trained to handle damaged batteries. Explain the visible problem before traveling so the site can give you packaging and transport directions. If the battery presents an imminent fire risk, call emergency services.
Battery built into a device
If the product is marked non-serviceable or the battery is not designed for user removal, do not pry it out. Take the whole device to a certified electronics recycler, a participating retailer take-back program, or a household-hazardous-waste facility that accepts it. Tell the site that the device contains a lithium-ion battery.

Identify the battery before you search
Drop-off programs accept specific chemistries and formats. Read the battery label, markings on the device, and the product manual. Record the information you can verify:
- Whether it says lithium-ion, Li-ion, or another chemistry.
- The battery’s physical format and approximate size.
- Whether it is loose, removable from the product, or built in.
- Whether it is a standard rechargeable pack, an e-bike or other high-energy pack, or part of a vehicle or stationary-storage system.
- Whether the battery is intact or shows any damage or malfunction.
Do not guess from the product’s appearance. A location may accept small rechargeable batteries but not a large pack, a high-energy micromobility battery, or a battery that remains inside a device. If the label is unreadable, describe the product to the program or manufacturer rather than assuming its chemistry.
How to prepare an intact removable battery
- Remove it only as designed. Follow the product manual. Do not force removal from a sealed or non-serviceable device. If removal causes bending, puncturing, or other damage, stop and request special handling.
- Inspect it. Look for swelling, cracks, leaks, punctures, crushing, bending, overheating, unusual odor, or malfunction. If any sign is present, stop this workflow and use the damaged-battery process.
- Isolate both terminals. Cover the positive and negative contacts with non-conductive tape. The EPA says electrical tape is preferred. Apply the tape so the contacts cannot touch metal objects or another battery.
- Use a separate bag if you do not tape the terminals. Place each battery in its own plastic bag. Do not put several loose batteries together where their contacts can touch.
- Keep the label visible and the battery protected. Do not cover identifying information unnecessarily, and prevent the battery from being crushed, punctured, or bent.
- Follow the destination’s instructions. Some programs specify additional packaging, quantity limits, or transport rules. Their instructions take precedence over general preparation advice.
EPA summarizes the key prevention step this way: “To prevent fires, tape battery terminals and/or place lithium-ion batteries in separate plastic bags.” This preparation is for intact batteries accepted by a normal program, not for swollen, leaking, cracked, bent, crushed, malfunctioning, or recalled batteries.
Find a legitimate drop-off location
Use a locator, then verify by phone or the site’s current instructions
In the United States, EPA-referenced resources include Earth911 and Call2Recycle. The Call2Recycle locator asks for a ZIP code and battery type. Search results are not a guarantee that every listed location accepts every battery: acceptance can differ by chemistry, size, condition, quantity, and whether the battery is inside a device.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Other possible channels include a participating retailer, a certified electronics recycler, or your local household-hazardous-waste program. A retailer’s general battery box may be intended only for intact household rechargeable batteries. A certified electronics recycler may be the correct choice for a laptop, phone, or other product with a built-in battery.
Questions to confirm before you travel
- Does the site accept lithium-ion batteries, rather than only another chemistry?
- What sizes and formats are accepted?
- Does it accept loose batteries, batteries still inside devices, or both?
- Are e-bike, scooter, or other high-energy batteries handled separately?
- Are damaged, defective, swollen, leaking, or recalled batteries accepted? If so, does the site require advance contact?
- Is there a quantity limit or a fee?
- What are the current operating hours and holiday closures?
- What packaging and transport instructions must you follow?
Confirm these details even when a locator lists the address. A site can change its accepted materials or temporarily stop taking a particular battery type.
Choosing among drop-off options
| Option | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Earth911 or Call2Recycle locator result | Intact household rechargeable batteries when a nearby participating site is listed | Exact chemistry, size, condition, quantity limit, hours, and whether batteries must be removed from devices |
| Participating retailer take-back | Product or battery types named by that retailer’s program | Whether the location accepts your battery, its condition, its size, and the current packaging rules |
| Certified electronics recycler | Phones, laptops, and other electronics with built-in batteries, or products the retailer will not take | Certification or program scope, device acceptance, fees, and whether damaged batteries require prior arrangements |
| Household-hazardous-waste program | Local programs that accept batteries or products needing controlled handling | Collection dates, accepted chemistries, condition restrictions, quantity limits, and transport directions |
| Trained damaged-battery collection site | Swollen, leaking, cracked, crushed, malfunctioning, or recalled batteries | Advance contact, emergency instructions, packaging, transport method, and whether the site accepts that specific battery |
Distance is not the only consideration. The safest destination is the one that explicitly accepts the battery’s chemistry, size, and condition and tells you how to bring it there.

Transporting the battery to the site
For an intact removable battery, keep the terminals taped or keep each battery in its own plastic bag. Prevent contact with keys, coins, tools, loose metal, or other batteries, and protect the battery from crushing or bending during the trip. Keep labels legible so staff can identify it.
Recommended Free Tools
Follow the destination’s directions for any additional container or quantity limit. Do not improvise a method for a damaged battery. A swollen, leaking, cracked, bent, crushed, malfunctioning, or recalled battery needs instructions from a manufacturer, retailer, hazardous-waste authority, or trained collection site before transport.
Special battery and product categories
Phones, tablets, laptops, and other integrated batteries
Do not pry out a battery that the product is not designed to service. Bring the whole device to a certified electronics recycler, a participating retailer take-back program, or a household-hazardous-waste facility that confirms it accepts devices with lithium-ion batteries. Remove personal data according to the device maker’s instructions, but do not damage the battery while preparing the product.
Power-tool packs and other removable packs
Once separated from the tool, a removable power-tool pack is handled as a lithium-ion battery. Choose a location that explicitly accepts rechargeable batteries or that brand’s pack. Tape both terminals or bag the pack by itself if it is intact. If the pack is damaged, do not place it in a regular box; obtain special-handling instructions first.
E-bike and micromobility batteries
Verify acceptance before visiting. A locator may list e-bike or other high-energy batteries separately from ordinary rechargeable batteries. Do not assume a small-battery collection box can handle a large pack. Never put a damaged e-bike, scooter, or similar battery in a regular collection box.

Mail-back and retailer take-back programs
Some manufacturers, retailers, and recycling services offer mail-back or take-back options instead of a public drop-off box. These can be useful when no nearby site accepts the exact battery, but program terms are not interchangeable. Confirm the accepted chemistry, battery size, condition, quantity, device format, fees, and packaging before ordering a kit or traveling to a store.

Use mail-back only when the program specifically authorizes that battery and provides its shipping and packaging directions. Do not place a swollen, leaking, cracked, crushed, malfunctioning, or recalled battery into an ordinary mail-back kit. Disclose the condition and obtain special instructions from the program, manufacturer, retailer, or hazardous-waste authority first.
Planning a safe handoff
Write down the battery’s brand, model, chemistry, approximate size, and the product it came from before calling a site. If the battery is damaged, describe exactly what you see, such as swelling, a leak, a crack, heat, or an unusual odor. This helps staff determine whether they can accept it and what container or transport method is required.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep the battery in a secure, dry place away from flammable materials while you arrange the handoff, without attempting repairs or dismantling. Keep intact batteries separated from metal objects and from one another. If a site gives you instructions that differ from general preparation advice, follow the site’s directions because they reflect its equipment and acceptance rules.
What to do when a site rejects your battery
A rejection does not mean the battery belongs in the trash. It usually means the location lacks the equipment, permit, packaging, or program scope for that chemistry, size, condition, or device format.
- Ask which characteristic caused the rejection: chemistry, size, condition, quantity, or battery still installed in a device.
- For an intact battery, search another participating retailer, certified electronics recycler, or household-hazardous-waste program that explicitly lists the correct type.
- For a damaged or recalled battery, contact the manufacturer, retailer, local hazardous-waste authority, or a trained damaged-battery site and disclose the damage before moving it.
- Keep the battery out of household garbage and curbside recycling while you arrange the correct destination.
Common mistakes and the safer alternative
- Putting a phone or laptop in the recycling bin: Take the complete device to a confirmed electronics take-back or hazardous-waste facility.
- Dropping a taped swollen battery into a normal box: Tape does not neutralize damage; request special handling.
- Assuming every “battery recycling” box accepts every battery: Check chemistry, size, condition, device format, quantity, and hours.
- Removing a sealed battery with tools: Do not pry or cut it out; recycle the whole device through an appropriate program.
- Mixing loose batteries in a container: Tape both terminals or place each intact battery in its own plastic bag.
- Taking an e-bike or vehicle battery to a small-battery box: Use the manufacturer, dealer, installer, salvage-yard, or specialized program identified for that system.
- Traveling with a damaged battery without calling: Obtain packaging and transport directions first; call emergency services for an imminent fire risk.
A quick checklist
- Identify the chemistry, size, and product type from the label or manual.
- Decide whether the battery is removable without force.
- Inspect for swelling, leaking, cracks, punctures, crushing, bending, overheating, odor, malfunction, or recall status.
- For an intact removable battery, tape both terminals with non-conductive electrical tape or place it alone in a plastic bag.
- Keep labels visible and prevent contact with metal objects or other batteries.
- Find a site through an EPA-referenced locator, participating retailer, certified electronics recycler, or household-hazardous-waste program.
- Confirm chemistry, size, condition, device status, quantity limits, fees, hours, and packaging requirements before leaving.
- Use manufacturer, dealer, installer, salvage-yard, or trained damaged-battery instructions for large systems or damaged batteries.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put a lithium-ion battery in the trash or curbside recycling?
No. Lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them should stay out of household garbage and recycling bins because collection and sorting equipment can crush or damage them and start fires. Use a confirmed battery, electronics, or household-hazardous-waste program instead.
Do I tape the terminals before recycling?
For an intact, removable battery, cover both terminals with non-conductive tape; the EPA says electrical tape is preferred. If you do not tape them, place each battery in its own plastic bag. Tape does not make a swollen, leaking, cracked, crushed, malfunctioning, or recalled battery safe for a normal box.
Where can I recycle a swollen phone or laptop battery?
Do not put it in a retailer battery box or standard collection container. Keep it away from flammable materials and contact the manufacturer, retailer, local household-hazardous-waste authority, or a trained damaged-battery collection site. Describe the damage before moving it and follow the instructions provided.

How do I find a battery drop-off near me?
Use an EPA-referenced Earth911 or Call2Recycle locator, search participating retailers, or contact a certified electronics recycler or local household-hazardous-waste program. Enter your ZIP code and the battery type where requested, then confirm acceptance directly because listings may not cover every size, condition, quantity, or device format.
Can I recycle a phone or laptop without removing its battery?
Yes, but take the whole device to a certified electronics recycler, participating retailer take-back program, or household-hazardous-waste facility that confirms it accepts devices with lithium-ion batteries. Do not pry out a battery that is not designed for user servicing.
Are power-tool, e-bike, and scooter batteries accepted at ordinary battery boxes?
Sometimes, but never assume. A separated power-tool pack must go to a location that explicitly accepts rechargeable batteries or that brand’s pack. E-bike and other high-energy batteries may be listed separately and require a specialized program. Verify acceptance before visiting, and never place a damaged pack in a regular box.

How should I handle an EV, hybrid, or home energy-storage battery?
These are medium- or large-scale systems, not household small-battery items. Contact the vehicle dealer, battery manufacturer, salvage yard, or energy-storage installer for management instructions. Do not use a curbside program or ordinary small-battery box unless that responsible organization specifically directs you to do so.
What if the drop-off site refuses my battery?
Ask whether the issue is chemistry, size, condition, quantity, or the battery remaining inside a device. Find another program that explicitly accepts the exact item. For damaged or recalled batteries, disclose the problem to the manufacturer, retailer, hazardous-waste authority, or trained collection site before transporting it. Never switch to trash or curbside recycling.
The Bottom Line
Keep every lithium-ion battery and battery-powered device out of household garbage and curbside recycling. For an intact removable battery, identify the chemistry and size, tape both terminals with electrical tape or bag the battery alone, and confirm a drop-off’s rules before you go. Built-in, oversized, e-bike, vehicle, and stationary-storage batteries need the appropriate take-back or specialist channel. Swollen, leaking, cracked, crushed, malfunctioning, overheated, or recalled batteries require special instructions—not a normal collection box.
