Check the rules for your local waste provider, then look for an item-specific option such as a retailer take-back, drop-off site, collection event, donation or approved mail-in program. Acceptance varies by community and by location, so confirm the site’s current rules before you travel or ship anything.
Why some recyclable items are not accepted curbside
Recyclability and curbside acceptance are different things. A local program’s equipment, contracts and processing arrangements determine which materials it collects. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises residents to check with their local recycling or composting program rather than assume an item belongs in the bin. Even when a material has a possible recycling route, that does not mean a nearby store or drop-off site accepts it.
Common curbside exceptions include plastic bags and wraps, electronics, textiles, batteries, household hazardous waste, tires and mattresses. The right route depends on the item’s material, condition and your local rules.

Batteries
Keep rechargeable batteries, including lithium-ion batteries, out of household trash and municipal recycling bins. The EPA identifies specialized battery recyclers, participating retailer take-back programs and local household hazardous waste (HHW) programs as possible options. Check the receiving program’s instructions before handling or transporting a battery.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Loose lithium-ion batteries: Use a separate battery recycling or HHW collection point. The EPA recommends placing each battery in its own plastic bag or covering its terminals with non-conductive tape. It says terminal taping helps prevent fires if batteries contact one another or other metals.
- Damaged lithium-ion batteries: Contact the battery or device manufacturer for handling instructions. Do not assume a damaged battery can be mailed or that ordinary battery packaging guidance applies.
- Devices with batteries that cannot be removed: Look for a certified electronics recycler, a participating electronics take-back retailer, or a local electronics or HHW collection program.
- Lead-acid batteries: The EPA recommends returning them to a battery retailer or using a local HHW collection program.
- Large vehicle or energy-storage batteries: Contact the manufacturer, automobile dealer or installer about the appropriate route.
The EPA’s lithium-ion battery guidance is to tape terminals with non-conductive tape to reduce fire risk. Follow the collection program’s own instructions, especially for damaged batteries.
Electronics
Electronics are not accepted in curbside recycling, according to the EPA; take them to a specific collection site instead. Its examples include computers and peripherals, mobile devices, televisions, drones and wearable electronics. For a device with a non-removable battery, use a certified electronics recycler, a participating take-back retailer, or your local solid-waste or HHW program.

Plastic bags and wraps
Plastic bags and wraps generally do not belong in curbside recycling. Some grocery or department stores have collection bins for plastic film, but acceptance varies. Confirm that the specific store takes the particular bag or wrap you have before bringing it in.

Textiles, tires, mattresses and other bulky items
Possible routes for textiles include transfer stations and retail collection bins. The EPA’s textile examples include apparel, footwear, carpets, rugs, furniture fiber and linens. It lists transfer stations as a possible route for tires and mattresses. These are examples of collection pathways, not a guarantee that a local facility accepts every listed item.
Ask your local authority about bulky-item pickup, transfer-station rules, donation or reuse options before leaving a large item out. The EPA’s municipal materials guidance also includes wood items such as pallets, small quantities of lumber and wood furniture, but that does not mean they are collected curbside in your area.

Household hazardous waste, paint and lamps
HHW can include corrosive, flammable or volatile-chemical products such as pesticides, solvents, leftover paint and some fluorescent tubes. Depending on local rules, options may include a permanent drop-off site, transfer station, community collection event or participating business. Ask the local HHW or recycling facility about paint recycling, and check whether a local organization accepts usable paint for donation.
For lamps, thermometers, aerosol cans that are not empty, and other items that may present a hazard, ask your local solid-waste or HHW agency how to dispose of them. Do not pour hazardous leftovers down a drain or dump them on the ground.

How to find and confirm a collection option
- Identify the item and its condition. Note details that can change how it is handled: for example, whether a battery is loose or sealed inside a device, whether a battery is damaged, whether a paint container still holds product, and whether an item is bulky.
- Check your local authority or recycling provider. Look for the accepted-material list and instructions from the government solid-waste or environmental agency, or the provider that serves your address. Those local rules are the authority for your jurisdiction.
- Use a relevant locator to find a possible outlet. The EPA points to Earth911 and Call2Recycle for battery recycling locations. Earth911 also provides broader location information for reuse, donation, recycling, municipal collection and mail-in options. A directory listing is a lead, not confirmation that a particular outlet currently accepts your item.
- Verify the specific site before going. Check its current accepted-item list and ask about material or battery chemistry, condition, quantity limits, fees, hours, residency requirements and appointments. These details are set by the local program or site.
- Use mail-back only when the program explicitly accepts the item. Follow that program’s current packaging and shipping instructions. Do not assume ordinary parcel shipping is permitted for batteries or hazardous materials.
Compare options before making the trip
When more than one route is available, choose the one that accepts your item in its current condition and is practical for you. Check:
- whether it accepts the specific material, product or battery chemistry;
- what condition the item must be in and what safety or packaging steps are required;
- where the site is, when it is open and whether it requires an appointment;
- whether there are fees, quantity limits or residency rules;
- whether donation or reuse is suitable before recycling; and
- whether the program offers drop-off, retailer take-back, an event or mail-in service.
These rules can change, and national guidance does not establish the acceptance terms of an individual local outlet. Confirm directly with the program or site before taking or shipping an item.
