Most advanced plastic materials should not go straight into a household recycling bin. First identify the item’s chemistry and label, then follow the local recycling provider’s acceptance list. Keep compostable plastics out of conventional plastic recycling, treat biobased plastics according to their specific chemistry, remove contamination only as your program requires, and obtain explicit instructions for multilayer, foam, medical, industrial, or heavily contaminated items.
“Advanced recycling” usually describes controlled, facility-scale chemical or thermal processing—not a special curbside category. A plant’s ability to process a difficult plastic does not create a household drop-off route. The facility or local waste authority must confirm that it accepts that exact material.

Start with the household decision, not the recycling technology
For a plastic item in your home, use this order:
- Read the package for resin information, recyclability or compostability claims, preparation directions, and take-back instructions.
- Check your local recycling provider’s current list. A resin-identification number describes the plastic type; it does not guarantee that your program accepts the item.
- Separate anything labeled compostable from conventional plastic recycling.
- Follow the local rule for emptying, scraping, or rinsing food containers.
- Ask before placing multilayer packaging, expanded foam, medical or industrial plastics, or heavily contaminated material in a curbside cart.
- Do not treat an “advanced recycling” claim as proof that a nearby facility accepts household material.
This approach prevents the most common error: putting an item into a collection stream because it looks recyclable, has a recycling symbol, or is associated with a technology that exists somewhere else.

What “advanced recycling” actually means
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes advanced recycling as chemical or thermal treatment that breaks down polymeric structures into recyclable feedstocks. It is performed in an industrial facility with defined input specifications and controls over the resulting material.

Conversion
Conversion processes include pyrolysis, hydrothermal treatment, and gasification. They break plastic structures into chemical feedstocks or other usable intermediates. The facility must control what enters the process because composition, moisture, additives, and contamination affect operation and output quality.
Depolymerization
Depolymerization breaks polymers into monomers. Those monomers can potentially be used to make new polymers, subject to purification, manufacturing controls, and any applicable authorization for the intended use.
Purification
Purification dissolves polymers and removes contaminants without breaking the monomer bonds. This can be useful when a material is difficult to sort mechanically but remains chemically suitable for recovery.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Process family | What happens to the plastic | Potential output described by EPA | What the household should understand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conversion | Polymeric structures are chemically or thermally broken down; examples include pyrolysis, hydrothermal treatment, and gasification. | Feedstocks or other chemical intermediates. | The plant needs specified, monitored inputs; a general household bin is not an automatic feedstock source. |
| Depolymerization | Polymers are broken into monomers. | Monomers for possible polymer production. | Compatibility and contamination controls still determine whether a particular item can be accepted. |
| Purification | Polymers are dissolved and contaminants are removed without breaking monomer bonds. | Purified polymers. | “Difficult to recycle mechanically” does not mean “accepted without sorting or preparation.” |
EPA notes that these processes may handle plastics that are too contaminated, multilayered, or degraded for mechanical recycling. That capability is conditional: facilities still need consistent, characterized inputs and qualified outputs. Advanced processing is therefore a supply-chain operation, not a disposal instruction printed on a package.
Advanced recycling is not automatically fuel production
Keep the material pathway separate from an energy pathway when evaluating claims. Under EPA’s 2024 strategy, conversion of plastic into fuel or fuel components is not counted as recycling. A description that says a plastic becomes fuel should not be presented as evidence that it becomes new plastic material.
Why contamination causes problems
Recycling systems are designed around a defined set of materials, equipment, and quality requirements. Food residue and nonaccepted items can cause a container or an entire load to be rejected. EPA summarizes the risk plainly: “Putting items in the recycling bin that can’t be recycled can contaminate the recycling stream.”
Contamination is not limited to visible food. An item can be unacceptable because its polymer is incompatible with the local process, because it is a composite or multilayer structure, or because it belongs to a regulated medical or industrial stream. The correct response is to verify the local rule rather than trying to compensate with extra washing or wishful sorting.

Preparation is local
Some programs ask residents to empty and lightly rinse containers; others specify different preparation rules. Rinsing more than the program requires can waste water without making an unaccepted item acceptable. Follow the provider’s instructions for that jurisdiction and material category.

Step-by-step: route an advanced plastic item correctly
1. Read every relevant label
Look for the resin-identification number, an explicit recyclability statement, compostable or biobased wording, and a manufacturer or retailer take-back instruction. Treat each statement as a clue to verify, not as a universal disposal guarantee.
2. Check the local acceptance list
Use the website, guide, or telephone line for your municipal program, private hauler, or solid-waste agency. Search the exact item category rather than relying on a broad “plastics accepted” statement. Ask whether the program accepts the specific resin, format, size, and packaging combination.
3. Remove compostable plastics from conventional recycling
Do not place a compostable cup, film, utensil, or package in a conventional plastic-recycling cart unless the local program explicitly gives that instruction. EPA says compostable plastics can contaminate and disrupt a stream of non-compostable petroleum-based plastics.

4. Confirm the composting route
Use a municipal or commercial composting collection only when it explicitly accepts that product. A compostable label alone does not establish home compostability, and a commercial facility may accept only specified items or certifications.
5. Treat biobased plastics as chemistry-dependent
“Biobased” identifies some or all of the material’s biological origin; it does not by itself establish compostability or recyclability. Some biobased plastics are incompatible with petroleum-based plastics, while others may be compatible. Follow the product’s disposal directions and the local program’s material list.
6. Prepare accepted items as instructed
Empty or remove food residue only to the extent required by your local provider. Do not assume that a thorough wash will make a heavily contaminated or excluded item acceptable.
7. Get a separate answer for specialty plastics
Ask the local recycling provider, solid-waste agency, or an identified drop-off facility about multilayer packaging, expanded foam, medical plastics, industrial plastics, and heavily contaminated material. Keep these items out of the curbside cart until the facility confirms acceptance.

Material-by-material guidance
| Item or label | Default household action | Why the route requires verification |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic with a resin-identification number | Check the local program before placing it in the bin. | The number identifies plastic type, not local acceptance. |
| Compostable plastic | Keep it out of conventional plastic recycling; use commercial or municipal composting only when the program explicitly accepts it. | It can contaminate and disrupt conventional recycling, and compostable labeling does not mean home compostability. |
| Biobased plastic | Follow the product label and local instructions for its specific chemistry. | Biobased materials do not share one disposal route; some are incompatible with petroleum-based plastics. |
| Multilayer packaging | Ask about a dedicated drop-off or other locally approved route. | Its layers may be difficult or impossible for the local mechanical system to separate. |
| Expanded foam | Keep it out of the curbside cart unless the provider lists it; ask about a designated facility. | Programs differ, and the material can be excluded from standard collection. |
| Medical or industrial plastic | Use the applicable regulated or specialty collection instructions. | Handling, contamination, and safety requirements may differ from household packaging. |
| Heavily contaminated plastic | Ask the provider for the approved disposal route. | Residue or embedded contamination can make an item or load unacceptable. |
How to compare possible routes
When an item appears to have more than one possible destination, compare the routes against the same six questions:
- Polymer chemistry and compatibility: Is the material compatible with the receiving facility’s process, or does it contain layers or additives that the process excludes?
- Contamination level: What residue, moisture, labels, closures, or other material can the facility tolerate?
- Physical format: Is the item multilayered, flexible, expanded, or otherwise unsuitable for the equipment used by the local program?
- Collection and geography: Is there an actual collection point in your area, and does it accept household quantities?
- Output: Does the route produce feedstock, monomers, oligomers, purified polymer, or fuel? Under EPA’s 2024 strategy, fuel conversion is not recycling.
- End-use controls: If the output could contact food, what decontamination, authorization, and quality controls apply?
A route that scores well on chemistry but has no accessible collection point is not a practical household option. Conversely, a convenient drop-off is not a reason to ignore the facility’s material and contamination limits.
Resin numbers, recycling symbols, and marketing claims
A resin number identifies, but does not promise
The resin-identification number helps sort plastics by type. It does not certify that your city, hauler, materials-recovery facility, or advanced-recycling plant accepts that item. Local equipment, contracts, markets, and contamination limits determine acceptance.

The Federal Trade Commission’s Green Guides say compostable claims require competent and reliable scientific evidence. They also should be qualified when suitable composting facilities are not broadly available. For a consumer, that means asking where the item can actually be processed, not merely whether the package uses the word “compostable.”
Biobased is not a disposal instruction
A biological feedstock can be used to make a plastic that behaves differently from another biobased plastic. The label does not settle whether the item belongs in recycling, composting, a take-back system, or residual waste. Chemistry and local acceptance do.
Food-contact safety and quality controls
Recycled plastic can carry chemical contaminants from previous use or from other waste. The European Commission explains that food-contact recycled plastic requires effective decontamination, authorized processes, and quality control. This is why an industrial recycler cannot simply claim that every recovered plastic is suitable for food packaging.
For households, the practical implication is to avoid removing, mixing, or redirecting material from a controlled collection system on the assumption that a higher-value use will follow. The receiving facility’s specifications and regulatory controls determine what the recovered material may become.
What the national figures do—and do not—tell you
EPA estimated that plastics represented almost 20% of U.S. municipal solid waste disposed in landfills or combusted for energy recovery in 2018, while about 9% of plastics in the municipal solid-waste stream were recycled. Those figures describe the U.S. system as a whole for that year; they do not predict whether a particular item is accepted by your local program in 2026.

Local instructions remain decisive because collection contracts, sorting equipment, end markets, and accepted formats vary by jurisdiction. A national recycling statistic cannot turn an excluded package into an accepted one.

“It has the triangle, so I put it in the bin.”
Why it fails: The symbol or resin number may identify material without indicating local acceptance.
Fix: Check the provider’s list for the exact item and format.
“It says compostable, so plastic recycling is better than trash.”
Why it fails: EPA warns that compostable plastics can contaminate and disrupt conventional recycling.
Fix: Use an explicitly accepting commercial or municipal composting program; otherwise follow the local residual-waste instruction.
“Biobased means it will break down.”
Why it fails: Biobased describes origin, not a shared end-of-life behavior.
Fix: Follow the item’s chemistry-specific and local directions.
“An advanced-recycling company accepts all difficult plastics.”
Why it fails: Advanced facilities require consistent feedstocks and controlled processing.
Best Value
Fix: Obtain written or published acceptance specifications and confirm that household delivery is allowed.
“If it becomes fuel, it was recycled.”
Why it fails: EPA’s 2024 strategy does not count conversion to fuel or fuel components as recycling.
Fix: Describe the route accurately as fuel conversion unless the process produces a recovered material recognized as recycling under the applicable framework.

Questions to ask a recycling provider or drop-off site
Have the item in front of you and ask specific questions:
- Do you accept this exact product, not just its general plastic category?
- Does the resin-identification number matter to your program, and which numbers or formats are accepted?
- Is this item compostable, biobased, multilayered, expanded, medical, industrial, or otherwise specialty material in your system?
- How empty or clean must it be?
- Can households deliver it, or does the facility receive only commercial bales?
- Are there quantity, size, bagging, labeling, or appointment requirements?
- Does the process recover material for new products, or convert it to fuel or fuel components?
- If the item is intended for food contact after recovery, what authorization and quality controls apply?
Record the answer and the date if the program changes seasonally or by facility. Do not infer that a different city, retailer, or manufacturer uses the same rule.
A compact decision tree
- Is the item explicitly compostable? If yes, exclude it from conventional plastic recycling and locate an accepting commercial or municipal composting program.
- Is it labeled biobased? If yes, use the specific chemistry and local instructions; do not assume compostability or recyclability.
- Does the local provider list the resin and format? If yes, follow its preparation rule. If no, keep it out of the curbside bin.
- Is it multilayered, expanded, medical, industrial, or heavily contaminated? Ask a specialty facility or waste agency before disposal.
- Does someone claim that advanced recycling accepts it? Verify the facility’s feedstock specification, household access, preparation requirements, and output type.
Why careful sorting is still necessary in an advanced-recycling future
Advanced processes can expand the range of plastics that are technically recoverable, but they do not eliminate the need for collection discipline. Facilities must receive predictable material, remove or manage contaminants, and demonstrate that outputs meet the requirements of their intended use. Household sorting therefore protects both conventional systems and emerging chemical or thermal systems.
The safest rule is narrow and practical: place an advanced plastic in a curbside bin only when the local program explicitly accepts that exact item. Otherwise, use a verified composting, take-back, specialty drop-off, or residual-waste route. That decision keeps compostables, incompatible polymers, regulated plastics, and contaminated material from degrading a stream that was designed for something else.
