To recruit a tribesman in Soulmask, repair the mask abilities Deter and Recruit, reduce an eligible NPC to very low health, use Deter to knock them unconscious, keep them alive with healing items and liquid food, and wait until their recognition reaches the required threshold. You then interact with the unconscious NPC and select Recruit.

Recruitment is not available from the start. Your mask must have the relevant progression nodes repaired first. Community guidance identifies Deter and Recruit as the required abilities. The exact progression level and green-crystal cost are version- and server-dependent, so open the mask progression screen and verify that both abilities are active before fighting a target.
- Deter repaired: lets you intimidate a weakened NPC and make them unconscious.
- Recruit repaired: enables the final recruitment interaction after recognition is high enough.
- Supplies ready: carry bandages or another healing item, plus liquid food such as broth.
- A safe destination: have a base or flame-altar area prepared so the unconscious NPC is less exposed while recognition rises.
- Transport available when necessary: the Wiki says a still-unconscious deterred NPC can be carried over your shoulder or moved on a llama with an extended seat.
Do not start the fight until you can care for the NPC. A defeated target can die from ongoing damage, hunger, or neglect before the recognition requirement is met.

Which NPCs can you recruit?
The Soulmask Wiki lists outcasts, barbarians, and regular enemy tribesmen as recruitable through deterrence. This method does not apply to every human NPC.
| NPC type | Recruitable with Deter? | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Outcasts | Yes, according to the Wiki | Can be weakened and deterred when the interaction appears. |
| Barbarians | Yes, according to the Wiki | These are the wild tribesmen described in the game’s recruitment feature framing. |
| Regular enemy tribesmen | Yes, according to the Wiki | Use the same low-health, Deter, care, and recognition process. |
| Scouts | No | The Wiki says scouts cannot be deterred and recruited. |
| Plunderers | No for this method | Do not waste supplies trying to force the Deter interaction. |
| Tribe leaders | No for this method | The standard deterrence route excludes leaders. |
Check the NPC’s identity before investing time in a capture. If the interaction never appears despite very low health, ineligibility is one of the first things to rule out.

1. Repair Deter and Recruit in the mask progression
Open your mask progression interface and confirm both nodes are repaired. The names are important: having general combat or control upgrades does not substitute for Deter and Recruit. Community reports indicate that the required level and green-crystal expenditure can vary by version or server configuration, so there is no single universal cost to quote.
2. Select a suitable target
Choose an outcast, barbarian, or ordinary enemy tribesman. Avoid scouts, plunderers, and tribe leaders because the documented deterrence system excludes them. If you want a worker for a particular station, inspect the NPC’s traits and skills when possible and choose a target whose abilities fit your planned role. Recruitment makes the NPC part of your tribe; it does not guarantee that every recruit is equally useful.
3. Reduce the target to very low health
Fight carefully and stop dealing heavy damage once the NPC is close to defeat. Guides commonly place the Deter interaction at roughly 10–20% health. Treat that range as a gameplay rule of thumb, not a guaranteed value for every current build. A patch, difficulty setting, or server setting may move the trigger.
Use controlled attacks rather than an uncontrolled area effect. If the target dies, there is no recruitment opportunity. If the interaction is still absent, lower health a little further while watching for the prompt, but avoid assuming that the target is eligible until the prompt actually appears.
4. Use Deter when the prompt appears
At low health, approach the NPC and use the interaction key. The Wiki reference lists E as the default interact key; custom key bindings can change it. Choose the Deter action rather than a normal attack or looting command.
Deter knocks the NPC unconscious and starts the recognition process. This is the capture stage, not the final recruitment. The NPC will not immediately become a permanent member of your tribe.
5. Prevent the unconscious NPC from dying
Open the unconscious NPC’s inventory and place bandages or another healing item inside. Liquid food, including broth, can also be put in the inventory and used manually. Practical Steam guidance specifically notes that feeding may be necessary while the NPC remains unconscious; do not assume that a knocked-out character can survive indefinitely without food.
Keep checking the NPC instead of leaving them unattended after one healing action. Clear nearby threats, avoid environmental hazards, and ensure that the unconscious body is not left where combat can resume. The time required for recognition is not given as a fixed number in the available sources, so your supplies must cover an uncertain waiting period.

6. Move the NPC to a safer location if required
If the capture happened far from home, the Wiki says you can carry the still-unconscious NPC over your shoulder. It also describes transport on a llama fitted with an extended seat. Move the NPC near your base or flame altar when practical, then continue providing care there.
Community guidance associates recognition gain with being cared for near the base or flame-altar area. The sources do not establish a precise radius or a guaranteed rate, so treat proximity as a useful positioning practice rather than a timed formula. Keep the body accessible for feeding and healing after transport.
7. Monitor recognition until the requirement is met
Recognition is the progress value that determines when the final recruitment option becomes available. The Soulmask Wiki gives a default minimum of 500. A Steam Community answer displays the requirement as 500/1000, which may reflect the current interface, a different build, or server configuration.
Use the value shown by your own NPC or interaction panel as the authoritative requirement for that session. Do not remove the NPC from care as soon as you see partial progress. Continue healing and feeding until the displayed threshold is reached.
8. Choose Recruit
When recognition meets the required value, interact with the unconscious NPC again and select Recruit. If the option is still missing, recheck the troubleshooting section below instead of repeatedly attacking the NPC. A missing option usually means that one prerequisite—eligibility, mask ability, recognition, or survival—has not been satisfied.
Why there is no Recruit option after knocking someone out
Knocking an NPC unconscious is only one step. Work through these checks in order:
Rank #2
- Confirm the NPC type. Scouts, plunderers, and tribe leaders are excluded from the documented deterrence method.
- Verify both mask abilities. Deter and Recruit must be repaired; a general mask upgrade is not enough.
- Check recognition, not just the unconscious state. The Wiki’s default is 500, while a Steam answer shows 500/1000. The current interface or server setting may use a different presentation.
- Make sure you used Deter. A normal knockout or defeat is not necessarily a deterrence capture.
- Keep the NPC alive. If the body has died, the recruitment interaction cannot appear. Supply healing items and manually use liquid food such as broth.
- Interact again after the threshold is reached. The Recruit choice is a follow-up interaction with the unconscious NPC, not an automatic conversion.
- Consider server or patch differences. Health triggers, ability costs, recognition displays, and capacity values can change. Verify the live value shown by your build rather than relying on an old guide.
How to feed and heal an unconscious tribesman
Care is the part most likely to be overlooked. Open the unconscious NPC’s inventory and place bandages or another healing item there. For food, use a liquid item such as broth and apply it manually from the inventory when needed. The practical guidance does not establish an automatic feeding schedule, so check the NPC periodically rather than assuming that merely placing food will complete the action.
- Keep enough healing items for the entire recognition wait.
- Carry extra broth or other liquid food instead of relying on a single serving.
- Protect the area from enemies and accidental damage.
- After transport, verify that the NPC remains unconscious and alive before leaving.
- Continue care until the recognition display reaches its requirement.
There is no published universal average for how long recognition takes or how much food a recruit consumes. Any guide that promises a fixed number of minutes or items would be broader than the available evidence supports.

Deterrence is the documented, repeatable route for turning eligible hostile NPCs into tribesmen. Other recruitment may occur in a scenario-specific or incidental context, but the available material does not define a universal alternative with fixed steps or success rates.
| Approach | Reliability | Time cost | Main risks | Recruit quality and capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Forced deterrence | Repeatable when the target is eligible and Deter/Recruit are repaired. | Includes the fight, transport, and an unquantified recognition wait. | Over-damaging the target, starvation, enemy attacks, and accidental death while unconscious. | Depends on the individual NPC’s traits and skills; uses the mask’s tribesman capacity. |
| Incidental or scenario-specific recruitment | Not established as a universal system in the available mechanics guidance. | Not stated. | Rules and availability depend on the specific scenario. | Not stated. |
For a planned workforce, deterrence gives you control over when to attempt a capture and which eligible NPC to pursue. It also demands the most preparation because the target must be kept alive until recognition is high enough.
Tribesman limits and what recruits can do
The repaired Control node initially allows 3 tribesmen, according to the Soulmask Wiki. Fully upgrading Connection Enhancement raises the documented cap to 18. Server settings may modify these progression-sensitive values, so check your own mask interface before planning a large workforce.
After recruitment, tribesmen can follow and assist you, defend the base, and work at crafting or production stations. The official Steam listing describes automated work and command systems as core features. Assign recruits according to their traits and skills rather than filling the roster with the first NPCs you capture.
Capacity is a hard planning constraint. If you are already at the current limit, recognition progress and a successful capture will not create an unlimited additional slot. Upgrade the relevant connection progression or review the server’s rules before starting another attempt.
Planning a safer, more efficient capture
Prepare the destination first
Place or identify a secure area near your base or flame altar where you can repeatedly open the NPC’s inventory. Have healing items and broth in your own inventory before the fight so you are not forced to abandon the capture to resupply.
Choose the target for the job you need
Recruitment adds a person, not a guaranteed profession. If you need a crafter, guard, or production worker, prioritize an eligible NPC with suitable traits and skills. The sources do not provide a statistical distribution of recruit quality, so selection remains an individual judgment rather than a percentage-based optimization.
Control damage near the trigger
The roughly 10–20% health range is only an observed rule of thumb. Slow down as the target weakens, watch for the Deter prompt, and avoid attacks that can kill the NPC before interaction becomes available.
Protect the recognition period
Recognition is the vulnerable phase because the NPC is unconscious but not yet recruited. Move them out of active combat, maintain food and healing, and check the displayed progress. A safe capture that takes longer is better than a fast attempt that ends with the NPC dead.
Multiplayer and private-server considerations
Soulmask supports co-op and private servers according to its official Steam listing. On a private or cooperative server, administrators may alter progression, NPC behavior, recognition presentation, or capacity through server settings. Coordinate who will guard the unconscious NPC and who will supply food and healing, then use the values displayed by that server as the final authority.
In a shared base, keep the captured NPC in a clearly protected location and tell other players not to attack or move the body unexpectedly. The recruitment sequence itself remains the same: eligible target, low health, Deter, care, recognition, then Recruit.

“By intimidating the wild barbarians, you can absorb them into your tribe.”
— Soulmask official Steam announcement
That statement matches the practical mechanic: intimidation is the conversion step, while care and recognition determine when the NPC can formally join.
