To recreate your The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings choices in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, enable Simulate Witcher 2 save when starting a new game. After White Orchard, during the Imperial Audience quest in Vizima, Morvran Voorhis will ask about five events from the previous game. Your answers set the imported world-state flags.
Direct save importing is unavailable on consoles. On those platforms, answering Voorhis’s questions is the supported way to define your Witcher 2 history.

What “Simulate Witcher 2 save” does
The setting does not recreate an entire Witcher 2 save file. It gives you control over a small group of decisions that The Witcher 3 checks for continuity. If simulation is enabled, the game postpones those decisions until the Imperial Audience interrogation. If simulation is disabled, The Witcher 3 applies its default assumptions and the special questioning does not occur.

You do not need to have played The Witcher 2. The questions describe the relevant events, so you can choose the outcome that best matches the Geralt you want to role-play. Players who remember their old playthrough can reproduce those answers instead.

How to enable the simulation
- Start a new game of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
- At the new-game setup screen, turn on Simulate Witcher 2 save.
- Play through the opening in White Orchard.
- Continue to Vizima and begin the Imperial Audience quest.
- When Morvran Voorhis asks about Witcher 2 events, answer each question to set your preferred history.
The interrogation is part of the game’s normal early progression; you do not need to find a separate menu or quest marker for it. If you selected the simulation option, the conversation occurs during Imperial Audience. With simulation off, the conversation is skipped.
When direct importing is possible
Console editions
Console versions cannot import a Witcher 2 save directly. CD PROJEKT RED’s support guidance says console players can only simulate their saves by answering questions about events from The Witcher 2. For a console playthrough, enabling simulation at new-game setup is therefore the practical route to custom continuity.
Other platforms and save compatibility
Whether a direct save can be recognized depends on the platform, the available save file and the current game version. Platform behavior can change with updates, so check the current patch and edition-specific instructions before assuming that an old save will be detected. The official product information for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition lists the current-generation versions and includes the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions; it also states that save files remain compatible within the supported versions.
The five answers Morvran Voorhis asks for
Each question corresponds to an imported Witcher 2 flag. The choices are not a second character-creation system: they establish what happened before Geralt arrived in The Witcher 3.
1. Aryan La Valette: kill or spare him
At the beginning of The Witcher 2, Geralt can kill Aryan La Valette or spare him. Choose killed if that is what happened in your playthrough, or spared if Geralt let him live.
This flag primarily affects continuity details. Later conversations and references can acknowledge Aryan’s fate, but the choice does not create a separate version of The Witcher 3’s main campaign.
2. Roche or Iorveth: choose Geralt’s side
The question asks which major faction Geralt supported in The Witcher 2: Vernon Roche’s path or Iorveth’s. Select the side you followed.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →This is a political-continuity flag. It can alter how characters greet Geralt, which past events they mention and the context surrounding Northern Kingdoms politics. It is not a choice between two complete Witcher 3 campaigns.
3. The Triss rescue: help the faction or rescue Triss
The interrogation also distinguishes whether Geralt helped the faction he had joined or diverted himself to rescue Triss. Pick the option that matches your earlier decision.
The result mainly changes references to the rescue and the way some characters describe Geralt’s actions. Treat it as a continuity choice rather than an alternate main-story route.
4. Síle de Tansarville: save her or let her die
Choose whether Geralt saved Síle de Tansarville or allowed her to die at the end of The Witcher 2.
As with Aryan and the Roche/Iorveth decision, this state is chiefly reflected through later dialogue, greetings and references to the past. It does not replace the central Witcher 3 storyline with a different campaign.
5. Letho: survived or did not survive
Set Letho’s status to survived if Geralt spared him and he lived through The Witcher 2, or to the opposing state if he did not.
Rank #2
- If you buy this game, you will receive a free next-gen update on December 14th!
- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
This is the most consequential answer. Letho’s survival can enable the Witcher 3 content associated with Ghosts of the Past. If the game is told that Letho did not survive, that branch is removed. If you want the possibility of encountering that content, set Letho’s flag to survived.
What changes when simulation is on or off
| Comparison | Simulation on | Simulation off |
|---|---|---|
| Control over Witcher 2 history | You answer the five continuity questions and choose each state. | The game uses its default assumptions. |
| Imperial Audience interrogation | Morvran Voorhis asks about Aryan, Roche or Iorveth, the Triss rescue, Síle and Letho. | The special confirmation conversation is omitted. |
| Letho-related content | You can set Letho as survived, preserving the possibility of Ghosts of the Past. | You do not manually set the flag; the default state applies. |
| Other continuity effects | You control dialogue, greetings, character references and political context tied to the five decisions. | Those details follow the defaults rather than your remembered playthrough. |
| Platform use | Required as the custom-continuity method on consoles, where direct import is unavailable. | Available on any supported platform, but without manual answers. |
| Spoiler exposure | The conversation names major Witcher 2 outcomes and can reveal past-game events. | You avoid the interrogation, but accept the game’s preset history. |
Should you simulate a Witcher 2 save?
Enable it if continuity matters
Turn simulation on if you want Geralt’s past to reflect a specific Witcher 2 playthrough, prefer to make your own political and character decisions, or want to preserve the possibility of Letho’s Ghosts of the Past content. It is also the correct choice on consoles when you want to customize these outcomes, because a Witcher 2 save cannot be imported directly there.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLeave it off if you want an uninterrupted start
Simulation off is reasonable if you do not care which Witcher 2 outcomes the game assumes, want to avoid questions about the previous game, or prefer not to encounter early spoilers for The Witcher 2. The trade-off is that you surrender control over the five flags and accept the defaults.
Use it even if you never played The Witcher 2
New players can still enable simulation. The interrogation explains the choices well enough to let you decide whether Geralt is more merciful or ruthless, which political ally he supported, whether he prioritized Triss, what happened to Síle and whether Letho survived. Choose consistently with the version of Geralt you want to play rather than trying to guess a hidden “correct” answer.

Clear gameplay-content effect: Letho
Letho’s survival is the standout flag because it can unlock a dedicated quest or encounter path. Setting him as alive preserves that possibility; setting him as dead removes it.
Primarily narrative effects: the other four flags
Aryan’s fate, the Roche/Iorveth allegiance, the Triss-related decision and Síle’s fate mainly adjust dialogue, greetings, references to prior events and the political backdrop. They help the world acknowledge your version of Geralt, but they do not produce five radically different main campaigns.

That distinction matters when choosing: do not skip simulation because you expect no changes at all, but do not expect every answer to open a new quest line. Most of the value is continuity and role-playing; Letho is the notable exception.
A practical decision guide
- Remember your Witcher 2 save? Reproduce its five outcomes exactly.
- Want Letho-related content? Answer that Letho survived.
- Want your own canon? Pick the Aryan, faction, Triss, Síle and Letho states that fit your interpretation of Geralt.
- Want no previous-game spoilers? Turn simulation off and accept the defaults, or enable it only if you are comfortable hearing the questions during Imperial Audience.
- Playing on a console? Use simulation; direct Witcher 2 save import is not available.
Common problems and fixes
The questions never appeared
Check whether Simulate Witcher 2 save was enabled when the new game was created. If it was off, the Imperial Audience interrogation is intentionally skipped. The setting is chosen during new-game setup, so starting a new game with the option enabled is the dependable fix.
I expected a full Witcher 2 save import
Simulation transfers selected world-state decisions; it is not a complete save-file migration. The five questions cover Aryan, the Roche/Iorveth side, the Triss rescue, Síle and Letho. Other progress, inventory and character-development details from an old Witcher 2 file are not recreated by this conversation.
I chose an answer and expected a different main plot
Only Letho’s state has a clearly identified quest-content consequence through the Ghosts of the Past branch. The other answers mostly influence continuity dialogue and references. Seeing the same major campaign structure after changing one of those choices is therefore expected.

There is no universal correct answer. Use your old playthrough if you remember it; otherwise select the outcome that matches the Geralt you want to role-play. The system exists to let you define the past, not to test your memory.
Edition and patch considerations
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine and is offered on current-generation platforms according to the official product information. Because platform behavior, edition packaging and save handling can change with patches, verify the current version for your platform before troubleshooting an import or compatibility issue. The simulation procedure itself remains the relevant method when direct console importing is unavailable.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist before you start
- Decide whether you want to hear Witcher 2 spoilers during Imperial Audience.
- Enable Simulate Witcher 2 save before creating the new game if you want manual control.
- Write down your five intended answers: Aryan, Roche or Iorveth, the Triss rescue, Síle and Letho.
- Set Letho to survived if you want to retain the possibility of Ghosts of the Past.
- Remember that the other four choices mostly shape dialogue and world continuity.
- On consoles, do not look for a direct Witcher 2 save-import workflow; simulation is the supported alternative.
