Windows 365 recovery depends on what went wrong. Use point-in-time restore to roll one Cloud PC back to an earlier disk state, reprovisioning to erase and rebuild it from current policy, and cross-region disaster recovery to provide a temporary Cloud PC during a regional outage. Disaster Recovery Plus adds reserved alternate-region capacity for Windows 365 Enterprise. These operations have different data-loss, licensing and continuity consequences, so choose the recovery path before clicking a destructive confirmation.

What “backup” means in Windows 365

Windows 365 Enterprise creates restore points for a Cloud PC. A restore point captures the device’s local state at a particular time, allowing an administrator to return the operating system disk to that state. The rollback includes local files, installed applications, Windows settings, downloads and other disk changes made on the Cloud PC.

That protection is not the same as a complete, file-level backup strategy. Cloud user-data services can provide version history, recycle bins and retention controls that a disk rollback does not replace. Microsoft’s Windows 365 user-data guidance recommends planning where each user’s files and settings live and verifying that the chosen service synchronizes the items that matter.

Point-in-time restore does not erase cloud-hosted files merely because the local disk is rolled back. For example, files already synchronized to a cloud storage service remain in that service. However, files that existed only on the Cloud PC, or changes that had not synchronized, are exposed to the rollback and can be lost.

Choose the correct Windows 365 recovery path

Situation Use What happens
Undo a recent local change or recover an earlier device state Point-in-time restore The Cloud PC returns to a selected restore point. Local disk changes after that point are discarded. See Microsoft’s restore overview.
The device is damaged, obsolete or must follow a changed provisioning policy Reprovision The existing Cloud PC is wiped and a new one is deployed according to the current policy. Existing data, applications and customizations are deleted. See Reprovision a Cloud PC.
Users need access during an unplanned regional outage Cross-region disaster recovery A temporary Cloud PC is created in an alternate region from the latest available restore point. Activation is manual and depends on available capacity; capacity is not reserved by the standard service.
Your continuity plan requires alternate-region capacity to be allocated in advance Disaster Recovery Plus This optional Windows 365 Enterprise service maintains alternate-region operating-system disk copies and reserved capacity, with tighter Microsoft-stated recovery targets.
The Cloud PC must permanently move to another region or Azure network connection Move Cloud PC This is a relocation operation, not an emergency activation. Restore points in the old region or network connection are deleted. See Move a Cloud PC.

For any regional design, evaluate eligibility and licensing, data-sovereignty rules, distance and user latency, the initial copy time, backup-region capacity, whether the device is temporary, and the service’s recovery-point and recovery-time objectives. Microsoft describes these as targets, not guaranteed completion times.

How do I restore a Windows 365 Cloud PC to an earlier date?

Before you start

  • Identify the restore point that contains the state you need and check its health in the restore-point list. Microsoft marks unhealthy snapshots; do not select one as your recovery basis unless you understand the risk.
  • Tell the user exactly which local files, applications, settings and downloads made after that point will disappear. A restore is a full local-disk rollback, not a selective undo.
  • Confirm that important files are synchronized to the organization’s cloud-data service. Check sync status rather than assuming that a file saved locally has already uploaded.
  • Consider credentials and software dependencies. Passwords, secrets, certificates and keys may have rotated since the restore point; rolling the disk back can make applications or services that depend on newer values fail.
  • Record the current device state and any configuration changes so you can investigate an unexpected result after the operation.

Administrator procedure

  1. Sign in to the Intune admin center with an account that can manage the Cloud PC.
  2. Open the affected Cloud PC record and select Restore.
  3. Review the available restore points, including the date, time and health indicator, and select the point that meets the recovery requirement.
  4. Read the confirmation carefully. Microsoft’s end-user instructions warn: “You can’t undo this action.” Start the restore only after the user accepts the data-loss boundary.
  5. Monitor the Cloud PC while the operation runs. The user sees a restoring status and cannot use the device normally until the process completes.
  6. After the device becomes available, sign in with the user, verify applications and local settings, check cloud-file synchronization, and test services that use certificates, secrets or other rotating credentials.

Microsoft documents the single-device workflow in Restore a single Cloud PC to a previous state and the associated management actions in Rename, Restart, Restore and Reset Cloud PCs.

Restore-point retention and manual points

Windows 365 Enterprise supports scheduled short-term and long-term restore points according to the policy configured for the tenant, as well as an on-demand manual restore point. A Cloud PC can have one manual point at a time. Creating another manual point overwrites the existing one; if it is not overwritten, Microsoft says it expires after approximately 28 days. Exact availability depends on the tenant’s configured schedule, so verify the actual list in Intune instead of promising a universal retention period.

Restore points are useful for recovering a known-good device state, but they do not preserve every change made between snapshots. If a user needs a file-level history, use the organization’s cloud-data controls in addition to Cloud PC restore points.

How do I back up Cloud PC user data?

Design protection in two layers. Use Windows 365 restore points for the operating-system and application state, and use cloud storage or another approved Microsoft 365 data service for user documents and other durable content. Cloud services can offer version history, recycle bins and retention policies, while a Cloud PC restore simply replaces the local disk with an older state.

  • Map each important folder and application data location to an approved cloud-data service.
  • Verify that synchronization covers the user’s actual files, including files created offline or by specialized applications.
  • Define how long versions and deleted items must be recoverable and configure retention accordingly.
  • Test recovery of an individual file separately from recovery of the whole Cloud PC.
  • Document which settings are policy-managed, which are synchronized by an application and which exist only on the local disk.

Do not assume that every application’s settings or local database is synchronized automatically. Confirm the behavior with the application owner and include unsynchronized data in a separate backup design.

How do I recover a Cloud PC during a regional outage?

Standard cross-region disaster recovery

Cross-region disaster recovery is designed as a temporary emergency service for an unplanned regional outage. It uses the latest available restore point to create an alternate-region Cloud PC, allowing the user to continue working while the primary region is unavailable. The feature requires the applicable add-on license and administrator configuration for the user.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The alternate device is not a new permanent primary. Activation and deactivation are manual. When recovery is deactivated, the temporary Cloud PC is deleted, and local disk changes made on that temporary device are not preserved. Users should therefore save enduring work in cloud storage while operating in the alternate region.

Capacity and recovery targets

Service Recovery-point objective (RPO) Recovery-time objective (RTO) Capacity condition
Cross-region disaster recovery Microsoft states a target below four hours. For tenants with fewer than 50,000 enabled Cloud PCs licensed for the feature, Microsoft states a target below four hours. Capacity in the backup region is not reserved. Actual provisioning can be delayed by availability.
Disaster Recovery Plus Microsoft states a target below 61 minutes. Microsoft states a target below 31 minutes. Alternate-region capacity is allocated in advance, subject to the service configuration and network requirements.

The figures are Microsoft objectives, not guarantees. The standard service can have a resilient restore point even when a temporary Cloud PC cannot be provisioned immediately because the alternate region is full. Review the current service description at Cross region disaster recovery in Windows 365.

Planning the backup region

Select the alternate geography with data residency, sovereignty, physical distance and user-latency requirements in mind. Confirm that the backup region supports the Cloud PC configuration and that your organization’s compliance rules allow the replicated operating-system data to reside there.

The initial copy is not instantaneous. Microsoft says the first cross-region backup may take several days. Once that copy completes, the RPO follows the point-in-time restore process plus a few minutes for replication. Build that initial delay into onboarding and continuity plans rather than enabling the service only when an outage begins.

Activation and deactivation discipline

  • Declare the regional incident and identify the users who are authorized for temporary recovery.
  • Activate cross-region recovery through the Windows 365 administration workflow and wait for the alternate Cloud PC to provision.
  • Give users instructions to save new work in approved cloud storage, not only on the temporary local disk.
  • Track which temporary devices are active and which user data or application changes occurred during the incident.
  • When the primary region is healthy and users can return, deactivate the temporary recovery devices deliberately. Deactivation deletes them, so copy or synchronize any required work first.

Microsoft’s setup details, including prerequisites and configuration, are in Set up cross region disaster recovery in Windows 365.

When is Disaster Recovery Plus appropriate?

Disaster Recovery Plus is an optional Windows 365 Enterprise service for organizations that need more predictable alternate-region recovery. It keeps operating-system disk copies in the alternate region and allocates capacity there, addressing the principal availability limitation of standard cross-region disaster recovery.

Microsoft states an RPO target below 61 minutes and an RTO target below 31 minutes. Those numbers still describe service objectives; they do not remove the need to configure networks, identities, applications and user-data synchronization correctly.

The first backup can take up to three days, while later incremental copies take minutes, according to Microsoft’s setup guidance. The alternate network configuration must support the restored Cloud PCs. Test the complete flow—including network connectivity, sign-in, application launch, cloud-file access and return to the primary region—as part of recurring business-continuity exercises. See Windows 365 disaster recovery plus and Set up disaster recovery plus in Windows 365.

Restore, reprovision or move: the differences that matter

Restore

Restore selects an earlier snapshot of the same Cloud PC. It is the least disruptive choice when the required state exists in a healthy restore point, but it permanently discards later local disk changes and cannot be undone.

Reprovision

Reprovision wipes the current Cloud PC and deploys a replacement based on the current provisioning policy. Use it when the device must be rebuilt from today’s image, policy or assignment—not when you need yesterday’s files or settings. Because the existing device data, applications and customizations are deleted, confirm that required data is synchronized or separately backed up before starting.

Move

Move Cloud PC is a planned relocation to another region or Azure network connection. It is not a temporary outage device and should not be used as a substitute for cross-region disaster recovery. Microsoft notes that restore points in the old region or network connection are deleted during the move.

Troubleshooting common recovery problems

The restore point is marked unhealthy

Choose another available point if one exists and investigate why the snapshot is unhealthy before relying on it. If no usable point contains the required state, recover files from the organization’s cloud-data service and consider reprovisioning only after confirming that a rebuild is acceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The user cannot find a file after restore

Determine whether the file was local-only, synchronized, deleted or created after the selected snapshot. Check the cloud service’s version history and recycle bin. A local file that never synchronized is not recoverable from the older restore point unless it existed at that earlier time.

Applications fail authentication after rollback

Check passwords, certificates, keys, tokens and other secrets that may have changed after the restore point. Reissue or re-register the affected credential through the application’s approved process; do not assume that restoring Windows will restore the current server-side credential.

Cross-region recovery will not provision

Verify that the user has the required license and is enabled for the feature, that the backup restore point exists, and that the alternate region has capacity. Standard cross-region recovery does not reserve capacity, so a delay can occur even when replication is healthy. Escalate capacity issues through the organization’s Microsoft support channel rather than repeatedly activating and deactivating the user.

The temporary recovery device contains important new work

Synchronize or copy that work to approved cloud storage before deactivation. The temporary Cloud PC is deleted when cross-region recovery is turned off, and local changes on it are not retained.

Build a repeatable Windows 365 recovery runbook

  1. Classify the incident: local mistake, device corruption, permanent relocation or regional outage.
  2. Select the operation: restore, reprovision, move, standard cross-region recovery or Disaster Recovery Plus.
  3. Protect current data: pause destructive work, verify synchronization and export any local-only information that must survive.
  4. Check prerequisites: restore-point health, configured retention, licensing, user enablement, alternate-region capacity and network readiness.
  5. Communicate the boundary: state which local changes will be lost, whether the device is temporary and how users should save work.
  6. Execute and monitor: record the selected point, start time, status and any provisioning or authentication errors.
  7. Validate: test sign-in, required applications, cloud files, policy application, certificates and business workflows.
  8. Document and improve: record the actual recovery result, update the runbook and repeat the test on a regular business-continuity schedule.

A sound plan treats Windows 365 restore points as one layer of protection. Durable user data, application dependencies, identity credentials, network connectivity and regional capacity all need their own verified recovery procedures.
