How to Recover Your Crypto Wallet if Your Phone Is Lost, Stolen, or Reset

Yes, a lost, stolen, or reset phone does not automatically destroy a crypto wallet. Recovery is possible when you still have the wallet’s original recovery material or can use the provider’s supported identity-based recovery method. The correct path depends on whether the wallet is self-custody, an embedded or smart wallet, or an account held by a centralized exchange.

First lock or erase the missing phone and secure the related Apple, Google, email, mobile-carrier, and exchange accounts. Then restore only through the wallet or exchange’s official app or website. If a thief may have seen your recovery phrase, private key, or wallet passcode, do not restore and continue using that wallet: create a new wallet on a secure device and move the assets.

Start by identifying who controls the keys

The word “wallet” covers different custody arrangements. Your next step is determined by what actually authorizes transactions.

Wallet or account type What authorizes access Recovery material Correct next action
Self-custody wallet You control the private keys Secret Recovery Phrase (seed or mnemonic phrase), and sometimes a separately imported private key Install the same wallet on a clean device and restore or import the account
Embedded wallet A provider-managed encrypted wallet tied to an identity account Supported email, Google, Apple, or passkey sign-in, plus any required password or backup Use the provider’s exact recovery flow on a secure replacement device
Smart wallet A smart-contract account using a passkey or other signer arrangement Cloud-backed passkey and, where offered, an optional recovery phrase Use the provider’s signer-recovery process to add a new signer
Centralized exchange account The exchange controls the platform account and its keys Exchange identity verification, password, and replacement two-step-verification method Recover the account through the exchange, then secure sessions and authentication

A phone reset normally removes the wallet application and local data; it does not transfer blockchain assets to another address. Assets remain controlled by the same keys or account until a valid transaction moves them.

Contain the loss before attempting recovery

Recovery should not be your first action if the phone is missing. A thief may be able to access email, cloud backups, text messages, authentication codes, or an unlocked wallet.

Lock or erase the device

  1. Use Apple Find My or Google’s device-management tools to mark the phone as lost, lock it, or erase it when the service allows.
  2. If the phone is still visible on a map, do not confront anyone or attempt a personal recovery. Treat the location as information for the carrier or law enforcement.
  3. For a stolen phone, ask the mobile carrier to suspend the line or issue a replacement SIM or eSIM. Recovering the number may be necessary for identity checks, but a replacement number does not restore a self-custody wallet.

Secure the linked identities

  1. Change the password for the Google Account or Apple Account associated with the device. Google recommends signing out of the lost or stolen phone and changing the Google Account password.
  2. Change the password for the primary email account and any exchange account used on the phone.
  3. Review active sessions and revoke the missing phone or any session you do not recognize.
  4. Replace lost two-step-verification methods with a secure authenticator, passkey, security key, or carrier-recovered number according to the service’s official process.

Use only the official wallet, exchange, Apple, and Google apps or websites. Search results, social-media messages, and links sent by strangers can lead to fake recovery pages.

Restoring a self-custody wallet

Self-custody means you, rather than a company, control the keys. The recovery phrase recreates the wallet accounts on another installation. A provider cannot generate a replacement phrase from your name, email address, device, or transaction history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you need

  • The original Secret Recovery Phrase, also called a seed phrase or mnemonic phrase.
  • The private key if an account was imported separately instead of being derived from the phrase.
  • The wallet’s official application or extension, downloaded from a source you verify independently.
  • A clean replacement phone that has current system updates and a screen lock.

Restore on a replacement phone

  1. Update the replacement phone and set a strong device passcode or biometric lock backed by a passcode.
  2. Install the wallet only from its official source. Check the publisher name and avoid sponsored links or direct-message downloads.
  3. Open the app and choose the option labeled Import existing wallet, Restore wallet, or equivalent wording.
  4. Enter the original Secret Recovery Phrase in the app’s private recovery screen. Never type it into a website, support chat, form, or message supplied by someone else.
  5. If the wallet asks for a wallet password, create or enter the password required by that installation. A local wallet password encrypts the app on that device; it is not a substitute for the recovery phrase.
  6. Confirm that the expected account addresses appear. Compare the address shown on the trusted replacement device with a record you already have, such as a prior transaction receipt.
  7. Re-add additional networks, tokens, and accounts if they are not displayed automatically. MetaMask’s official restoration guidance notes that these items may need to be added manually after a fresh installation.

MetaMask states, “MetaMask cannot recover your wallet for you.” Ethereum.org likewise says, “No one, including ethereum.org, can reset your password or restore access to a self-custody wallet.” These statements describe the custody model: possession of the phrase or private key is what grants control.

If the wallet was created through an identity login

Some wallet applications support creation through a Google, Apple, or Telegram login rather than showing a conventional phrase at setup. If you used that supported flow, install the official app, choose the same sign-in method, and provide the wallet password or other factor the provider requires. Do not assume that an ordinary email login will recreate a wallet unless the provider explicitly says it supports that recovery method.

If an account is missing after restoration

A restored phrase can show the first account while an additional account remains hidden. Check the wallet’s account-management or import menu. An account imported with a standalone private key cannot be recreated from the phrase unless it was originally derived from that phrase; you must retain and import that private key separately. If you cannot produce the required phrase or private key, the provider cannot manufacture it.

Embedded and smart wallets

Embedded and smart wallets can use identity accounts, passkeys, cloud backups, or multiple signers. Their recovery behavior is provider-specific, so follow the exact documented flow rather than trying to import an unfamiliar string into a conventional wallet.

Embedded wallet recovery

Kraken says an embedded wallet can be restored on a secure replacement device by signing in with the same email, Google, Apple, or passkey method. Use the provider’s official application, complete any requested verification, and confirm that the restored addresses match your records before signing a transaction.

Smart wallet recovery

Coinbase says a smart wallet may use a cloud-backed passkey and an optional recovery phrase. That phrase can allow a new signer to be added after a device or passkey is lost. If your smart wallet offers this option, protect the phrase as seriously as a self-custody seed and use the provider’s documented signer-recovery sequence. A passkey stored in one device is not automatically available on every replacement device unless the passkey provider has synchronized it or you have another approved recovery method.

Do not confuse identity recovery with key recovery

Regaining access to an email or social account does not prove that a conventional self-custody wallet can be restored. It works only when the wallet was explicitly created with that identity-based design. If the original app displayed a Secret Recovery Phrase, treat that phrase as the authoritative backup.

Recovering an exchange account

Coins held by a centralized exchange are accessed through the exchange account. You do not restore them by importing your exchange password into a self-custody wallet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the exchange’s official account-recovery page or app on the secure replacement device.
  2. Complete the exchange’s identity-verification and password-reset process.
  3. Recover or replace the lost two-step-verification method using the exchange’s approved procedure.
  4. After signing in, change the password again if it was exposed, revoke old sessions and API keys, and review withdrawal addresses, devices, and recent activity.
  5. Contact the exchange through its independently verified support channel if withdrawals or account changes occurred while the phone was missing.

Ethereum.org explains that exchanges control accounts on their platforms and may be able to help with password or account recovery. That assistance does not extend to a missing self-custody phrase.

Decide whether to restore or migrate funds

The central security question is whether the phone was merely lost or whether recovery material may have been exposed.

What happened Risk assessment Next action
Phone lost or reset; phrase and private keys stayed offline; device was locked The wallet may still be secure Secure linked accounts, then restore on a clean device
Thief may know the phone passcode and could open the wallet Wallet may be compromised Create a new wallet on a secure device and transfer assets
Phrase or private key was photographed, copied, stored in an exposed note, or entered into a suspicious site Assume permanent key exposure Create a new wallet and move assets; never reuse the exposed recovery material
Only an exchange phone session was lost Account access may be recoverable through the exchange Recover the account, revoke sessions, and replace authentication methods

How to migrate after possible exposure

  1. Use a clean device and the official wallet application to generate a completely new wallet with a new recovery phrase.
  2. Write the new phrase offline and verify every word before relying on it.
  3. Check the destination address on the trusted device. For a significant transfer, send a small test amount first if the network and fees make that practical.
  4. Transfer tokens and other assets from the potentially exposed wallet to the new addresses. Account-specific assets may require separate transactions.
  5. After confirming the transfers on the relevant blockchain explorer or wallet history, stop using the exposed wallet.

Kraken specifically recommends creating a new wallet and transferring funds when the phrase or device passcode may have been exposed. Do not wait for a theft to occur before moving assets if you already know the key material was copied.

Scams that target people who lost a phone

People seeking recovery are commonly approached by fake “support” accounts. The safest rule is simple: no legitimate support representative needs your Secret Recovery Phrase, private key, wallet password, exchange password, backup code, or one-time code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ignore direct messages offering paid seed-phrase recovery or asking you to “validate” a wallet.
  • Never paste recovery words into a support form, chat, screen-sharing session, or website reached through an unsolicited link.
  • Verify the domain, app publisher, and support contact independently rather than trusting a message that appears to come from a known brand.
  • Do not install remote-access software at the request of a supposed wallet agent.
  • Before sending funds, compare the full destination address on a trusted screen. Malware or clipboard manipulation can replace a copied address.

MetaMask says it will never ask for the Secret Recovery Phrase. Any person claiming to be support while requesting it is asking for the wallet itself.

What to do when the phone was reset

A factory reset or accidental wipe removes local wallet data but does not move blockchain assets. If the wallet was self-custody, reinstall the same application and restore with the original phrase or separately imported private key. If it was embedded or smart, use the same supported identity or passkey method. If it was an exchange app, reinstall the app and recover the exchange account.

Do not create a new wallet and assume it is the old one merely because the app shows a balance of zero. A new wallet has different addresses. Check the restored account address before concluding that funds are missing, and re-add the relevant network or token when the wallet requires it.

When recovery is not possible

If you have lost the only copy of a self-custody recovery phrase and cannot produce a separately stored private key, there is no provider reset that can recreate access. A password reset for your email, phone, or wallet application cannot replace the missing cryptographic key. Be especially skeptical of anyone promising to recover it for a fee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an exchange account, recovery may still be possible because the exchange controls the account and can perform identity checks. That is a different situation from self-custody and depends on the exchange’s policies and evidence.

Build a recovery plan after you regain access

Protect the recovery phrase

  • Keep the phrase offline in a secure location rather than in screenshots, ordinary cloud notes, email, or a password manager shared with other people.
  • Maintain a second physically separate backup if your threat model allows it, while ensuring both copies remain protected from unauthorized access.
  • Do not label a backup in a way that reveals what it controls to someone who finds it.

Use hardware signing where appropriate

A hardware wallet can keep signing keys offline and reduce dependence on one phone. MetaMask names Ledger and Trezor as examples of hardware wallets. Hardware storage does not eliminate the need to protect the recovery phrase: whoever obtains that phrase may be able to recreate the wallet elsewhere.

Prepare identity-account fallbacks

For Google or Apple accounts that protect an embedded wallet, save backup codes and consider a spare hardware security key. Google lists backup codes and security keys as fallback methods. Apple recommends setting up at least two security keys so one remains available if another is lost, damaged, or stolen. Apple also documents Account Recovery Contacts that can provide a recovery code out of band.

Keep enough information to verify addresses

Record wallet addresses, supported networks, and the location of separately imported accounts without recording the secret phrase beside them. This makes it easier to recognize a correct restoration and detect a new wallet that only looks similar.

A practical recovery checklist

  1. Lock or erase the missing phone.
  2. Sign out of it and change Google, Apple, email, carrier, and exchange credentials as needed.
  3. Replace lost SIM, authenticator, passkey, or security-key access through official recovery channels.
  4. Identify whether the funds are in a self-custody, embedded, smart, or exchange account.
  5. Gather the correct recovery material without disclosing it to anyone.
  6. Install the official wallet or exchange app on a clean replacement device.
  7. Restore the wallet or recover the account, then verify addresses and balances.
  8. If the phrase, private key, or device passcode may have been exposed, generate a new wallet and transfer assets instead of continuing to use the old one.
  9. After recovery, create offline backups and test that your fallback identity methods work.
