How to Recover When an AUR Package Breaks After an Arch Linux Update

When an AUR package stops building or running after pacman -Syu, first complete a normal full-system upgrade, then refresh the package’s AUR checkout and rebuild it as an unprivileged user. Official-library and soname changes commonly invalidate locally built packages. Signature errors follow a different keyring and clock-recovery path, while a confirmed runtime regression may justify a temporary, matching rollback.

Why an AUR package can break after pacman -Syu

The Arch User Repository contains build recipes, not binaries maintained and rebuilt in lockstep with the official repositories. You compile an AUR package locally against the libraries and tools installed on your machine. When an official repository updates one of those libraries, the binary already installed from the AUR does not automatically get relinked.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

ArchWiki states the practical rule plainly: “If packages in the official repositories are updated, you will need to rebuild any AUR packages that depend on those libraries.” A soname bump is the clearest example. A library can keep a familiar package name while changing its ABI (application binary interface) and soname. An old AUR binary may then fail to start with a message about a missing shared object, fail to load a symbol, or be rejected by a dependency check. A source package can also stop compiling because an API, compiler behavior, or build tool changed.

Do not assume every post-upgrade failure is an AUR defect. An incomplete or selective system upgrade can leave a partial-upgrade state in which the local package database, libraries, and applications describe different versions. That state must be corrected before you judge the AUR recipe. Package-signing failures are another separate class: an unknown key, invalid signature, or expired trust database is not fixed by rebuilding application source.

First restore a synchronized package state

Start with the base system, not the broken AUR build. Use the normal full upgrade:

sudo pacman -Syu

Allow the transaction to finish, and read any Arch news item or package-specific warning shown during the upgrade. Do not use an isolated library installation to “get past” the error, and do not mix an old local package database with selectively upgraded libraries. A full transaction gives the compiler and the finished package a coherent set of headers, runtime libraries, tools, and dependency metadata.

Before changing the recipe, record enough information to identify the failure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The exact AUR package name and the installed version.
  • The command that fails, such as the build command, installation transaction, or application launch.
  • The first meaningful compiler, linker, dependency, or runtime error, rather than only the final “build failed” line.
  • The versions of the relevant official dependencies after the full upgrade.

Keeping the first meaningful error matters because later messages often describe consequences. For example, a linker error naming a missing symbol is more useful than a final makepkg exit status, and an invalid-signature message points to a different repair than a missing header.

Refresh the AUR checkout before rebuilding

Once the official system is synchronized, obtain the current package recipe. Update the local AUR checkout rather than repeatedly rebuilding an old directory. Review the change history or current maintainer comments when available, then inspect the files yourself. ArchWiki advises: “After manually confirming the contents of the files, run makepkg as a normal user.”

Read the PKGBUILD before executing it. Check the package name, version, source URLs, dependency declarations, patches, and checksums. Confirm that a new release, patch, or dependency version addresses the library change you just installed. A recipe can be stale even when the upstream project has already released a compatible version; conversely, a recent recipe may expose an upstream source regression that is unrelated to Arch’s library update.

Build without root privileges. From the refreshed package directory, a typical sequence is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
makepkg -s
sudo pacman -U ./package-version-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

The exact output filename depends on the package version, architecture, and compression format. Let makepkg resolve declared build dependencies, and install the resulting package with pacman so it is tracked in the local package database. Do not run the build itself with sudo; root-owned files in the source tree can create confusing permission and cleanup failures on the next attempt.

Classify the failure before choosing a fix

The symptom determines whether you should rebuild, repair signing infrastructure, inspect the recipe, or consider a rollback.

Failure class Typical evidence Correct first action
Dependency or ABI mismatch Missing shared object, unresolved symbol, dependency version conflict, or a binary that no longer starts after a library update Verify installed dependency versions, refresh the PKGBUILD and source, then rebuild against the synchronized libraries
Source or build-recipe failure Checksum mismatch, failed patch, removed source file, compiler error, or a recipe that references an obsolete API Inspect the PKGBUILD, checksums, patches, compiler output, and current maintainer changes before rebuilding
Package-signing failure Missing key, invalid signature, unknown trust, or a signature that cannot be checked Check the system clock and update the Arch keyring through the documented package-signing procedure; never bypass signature verification blindly
Runtime regression after a successful build The package compiles and installs, but the application crashes, misbehaves, or loses a feature with the current libraries Test the new build, check current package reports and maintainer information, and use a controlled temporary rollback only if the regression is confirmed

Separating these classes prevents a common mistake: treating a trust error as a compiler problem, or downgrading an entire system when a corrected AUR recipe would solve an ABI mismatch.

Rebuild after a library or soname change

1. Confirm the dependency relationship

Read the package’s declared runtime and build dependencies and compare them with the library that changed in the official repositories. A package can depend on a library directly, through another component, or through a plugin that is loaded only at runtime. If the AUR package links to the changed library, assume its old binary needs a rebuild even if its package version has not changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Refresh sources and metadata

Update the AUR checkout, inspect the latest PKGBUILD, and verify that its source archive, patches, and checksums correspond to the declared version. If the maintainer has committed a fix for the new library, use that recipe. If the source itself has changed, preserve the compiler output so a maintainer can distinguish a recipe problem from an upstream incompatibility.

3. Build as a normal user

Run makepkg in the package directory without root privileges. Resolve the build dependencies requested by the recipe, but do not install random older libraries merely to make compilation pass. The goal is a binary built against the versions in the synchronized system.

4. Install and test the package

Install the generated package with pacman, then exercise the function that failed: launch the application, load the affected plugin, or run the command that previously reported the missing symbol. A successful compile is not proof that the runtime behavior is correct; dynamic loading and optional features may fail only when used.

5. Rebuild every affected local package

Do not stop at the first AUR package that displayed an error. Other locally built packages may link to the same changed library and remain broken until rebuilt. Work through the locally installed AUR packages that declare or demonstrably use the updated dependency. Rebuild them from refreshed recipes so all of them target the same ABI.

Repair keyring and signature errors separately

Messages about an unknown key, invalid signature, or untrusted package concern pacman’s verification chain, not the AUR compiler. First check that the system date and time are correct. An incorrect clock can make an otherwise valid signature appear outside its validity period.

Next, use the documented package-signing recovery procedure to update archlinux-keyring through a synchronized pacman transaction. The keyring package must be brought current before you retry packages whose signatures could not be verified. If the normal transaction cannot proceed, follow Arch’s official signing-recovery instructions rather than improvising with untrusted files.

  • Do not disable signature checks in pacman configuration.
  • Do not delete trust databases or key material blindly.
  • Do not treat a keyring error as evidence that the AUR source needs a different compiler.

After the clock and keyring are corrected, retry the full upgrade or package installation. If the same package then fails to build, return to the dependency, recipe, or source classification instead of continuing keyring troubleshooting.

When a temporary rollback is justified

Rebuilding is the normal response to a library transition. A rollback is a controlled exception for a confirmed current-package regression: the synchronized package is known to introduce a reproducible runtime failure, and no fixed current package or recipe is available yet. Downgrading merely because an AUR build is stale can leave the rest of the system in an inconsistent state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a matching cached package when available

Pacman may still have the required older package in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/. Install the exact file with a local package transaction:

sudo pacman -U file:///var/cache/pacman/pkg/package-old_version.pkg.tar.zst

Replace the filename with the package and version that you have verified as compatible. Record the versions you rolled back. If the application depends tightly on a group of libraries, downgrade the coupled packages as a coherent set rather than mixing one old library with newer components that expect the new ABI.

Use an Arch Linux Archive snapshot when the cache is empty

The Arch Linux Archive provides dated snapshots when the needed package is no longer cached locally. Select a snapshot that contains the matching package set, not just an arbitrary older file. A rollback is temporary: rolling repositories continue to move, so keep watching for the fixed package or updated AUR recipe and return to a current, synchronized state as soon as the regression is resolved.

Record and reverse the rollback

Write down the package names, exact versions, snapshot date if used, and the runtime symptom that prompted the change. This record prevents accidental mixing of versions and gives maintainers a reproducible report. Once a corrected package is available, perform a normal full upgrade and rebuild affected AUR packages against that current set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rebuild or roll back? Use the evidence

Question Rebuild is favored when… Rollback is considered when…
Is the system synchronized? pacman -Syu completed normally and dependency versions are current A rollback is not a substitute for completing the full upgrade; first restore a coherent state
Did a library or soname change? The AUR binary was built against the previous ABI or the refreshed recipe contains a compatibility fix Only if the current library itself has a confirmed runtime regression
Is a current PKGBUILD fix available? Use the updated recipe and build as an unprivileged user Do not downgrade simply to avoid updating a known stale recipe
Is a known-good older package available? Prefer a current rebuild when it works Use a matching cache file or archive snapshot for a confirmed regression, and treat it as temporary

Escalate with a reproducible report

If a refreshed recipe still fails on a fully synchronized system, check the AUR package page and maintainer comments before changing unrelated system files. Preserve the complete build log, including the first meaningful error. A useful report includes:

  • The package base and the AUR checkout commit or snapshot used.
  • Your architecture.
  • The exact versions of relevant dependencies after pacman -Syu.
  • The complete command that failed and the first compiler, linker, dependency, or runtime error.
  • Whether the failure is reproducible after cleaning and rebuilding the refreshed source.

This information lets the maintainer distinguish a stale PKGBUILD, a checksum or patch problem, an official-library ABI transition, and an upstream source regression. Avoid posting only a screenshot of the final error or claiming that the package is broken when the system was partially upgraded.

Common mistakes that prolong recovery

  • Running a partial upgrade: Installing one new library or using an isolated sync leaves packages built for different repository states. Complete the normal full upgrade first.
  • Rebuilding an old checkout: A local AUR directory may predate the library transition. Refresh the recipe and inspect its contents.
  • Building as root: Root-owned build artifacts cause permission failures and obscure the actual source error. Use makepkg as a normal user.
  • Rebuilding only the package that complained: Every AUR package linked to the changed library can require a rebuild.
  • Disabling signature checks: This removes the protection that tells you whether a package is authentic. Repair the clock and keyring instead.
  • Downgrading without a version set: An isolated old library can conflict with newer dependents. Downgrade tightly coupled packages together and record the versions.
  • Ignoring runtime testing: Compilation proves that the source built, not that optional modules, plugins, or normal application workflows work with the new libraries.

A compact recovery checklist

  1. Run sudo pacman -Syu and finish the complete transaction.
  2. Read relevant Arch news or package warnings.
  3. Record the AUR package, installed version, failing command, and first meaningful error.
  4. Refresh the AUR checkout and inspect the PKGBUILD, sources, checksums, and patches.
  5. Run makepkg as a normal user, then install the generated package with pacman -U.
  6. Rebuild other locally built packages affected by the same library or soname change.
  7. If the message concerns signatures, correct system time and update archlinux-keyring through the documented signing procedure instead of bypassing verification.
  8. If a current package has a confirmed runtime regression, use a matching cache file or archive snapshot as a temporary, recorded rollback.
  9. If the clean rebuild still fails, preserve the complete log and report the package base, recipe revision, architecture, dependency versions, and exact error to the maintainer.

What a successful recovery looks like

The endpoint is not merely a package that installs. Your official repositories are synchronized, the AUR recipe has been reviewed and rebuilt against the current libraries, signatures are being verified normally, and the application or plugin that failed has been tested at runtime. If you used a rollback, the old versions and reason are documented and you have a clear path back to a fixed current package.
