1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf Samsung Gallery stopped showing your OneDrive photos, the files were not necessarily deleted. Samsung ended direct Gallery–OneDrive sync on September 30, 2026, and removed the Samsung–Microsoft account link, but photos and videos already uploaded to OneDrive remain in the linked Microsoft account. Open OneDrive to find them, download originals to restore local Gallery access, or recover genuinely deleted items from OneDrive’s Recycle Bin.
For future pictures, turn on OneDrive Camera backup. It uploads new photos to the cloud, but it does not recreate the former bidirectional Gallery integration or its album browsing.

What changed when Samsung Gallery sync ended
Samsung Support Australia announced on September 29, 2026, that Gallery sync with OneDrive would end on September 30, 2026. The Samsung–Microsoft account connection was also deleted. Microsoft’s transition guidance confirms that existing OneDrive files remain unchanged and accessible on devices with the OneDrive app installed.
The important distinction is visibility versus storage. A photo can disappear from the Samsung Gallery view because the integration no longer exists while still being safely stored in OneDrive. Samsung’s notice states: “Your existing photos and videos synced from Gallery sync with OneDrive will remain safely stored in OneDrive and can still be accessed through the OneDrive app.”

| Situation | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Photo no longer appears in Samsung Gallery | The old Gallery connection is gone; this alone does not prove deletion. | Open OneDrive and check the Photos view and the folders that held the files. |
| Photo appears in OneDrive but not on the phone | The cloud copy exists, but there is no local copy in phone storage. | Download the original from OneDrive or use Gallery’s Download Originals command if it is still offered on your software version. |
| Photo was deleted | OneDrive may have moved it to the Recycle Bin. | Restore it promptly; Samsung’s US support page states a 93-day Recycle Bin period for the described photos and videos. |
| New photos are not reaching OneDrive | The former Gallery sync no longer uploads them. | Enable Camera backup in the OneDrive app and grant full photo and video access. |
First, locate the cloud copy in OneDrive
Use the same Microsoft account
Open the OneDrive app and inspect its Photos view. Also browse the folders where Samsung Gallery files were stored. If you use a browser, sign in to the Microsoft account that was linked to Gallery. Your Samsung account and Microsoft account can be different, so signing in with the wrong email address can make a healthy OneDrive library look empty.
- Open OneDrive on the phone, tablet or computer where you normally use it.
- Check Photos, then check the folder hierarchy for the albums or camera folders you remember.
- Open a few files to confirm that they are the expected originals, not thumbnails or unrelated images.
- If nothing is present, sign out only after noting the account address; then try each Microsoft account that may have been connected to Samsung Gallery.
Microsoft’s transition guidance says OneDrive photos and videos remain accessible at onedrive.com or through devices where OneDrive is installed. Seeing the files there confirms that the service shutdown changed the Gallery view, not the cloud storage.
Map Gallery albums to OneDrive folders
A Gallery album is not always a one-to-one copy of a OneDrive folder. Gallery can group images by date, device folder or user-created album, while OneDrive may show the underlying upload folder. If an expected album is missing, search by file name, date and location rather than relying only on the album title. Compare a few distinctive images, such as a recent vacation photo or a screenshot, to identify the correct folder before downloading a large batch.
Do not move, rename or delete cloud files while you are still locating them. Because the former connection was synchronized, a cleanup performed in one endpoint could affect other connected views. Establish which account and folders contain the originals first, then make a separate local copy.
Download photos back to the Samsung phone
Downloading creates a local copy in phone storage. Local copies can be opened by Samsung Gallery and remain available even if you later change cloud services. Check free space before starting: Samsung cautions that only files that fit the phone’s available storage will be saved.
Download an entire album before or around the shutdown
Samsung’s documented album route is:
- Open Gallery.
- Tap Menu, then Settings.
- Choose Gallery sync with OneDrive.
- Tap Download Originals.
- Select the album.
- Tap Download and keep the phone connected to power and a reliable network until the transfer completes.
This Gallery command may no longer be available after the integration has been withdrawn. Menu names and availability vary by device software, carrier, market and rollout, so an absent command is not evidence that the OneDrive files are gone.
Download selected photos or videos
For individual items, Samsung documents this path:
- Open Gallery and go to Photos.
- Select the photos or videos.
- Tap More.
- Tap Download.
You can also download directly from the OneDrive app. Select the file or files, open the app’s more-options menu and choose the download command shown on your version. OneDrive saves the result to local device storage; Gallery may need a short time to index a large batch before the images appear.

Plan downloads for a large library
Start with the folders you cannot replace and work in manageable groups. A phone may have enough capacity for several albums but not an entire multi-year library. Download one group, verify it, and only then begin the next. If the app offers a multi-select download, keep the selection smaller when the phone is close to full or the network is unreliable. Leave the OneDrive originals untouched until every important local copy has been checked.
Make sure the download really finished
- Open the downloaded file from the phone’s Files app and confirm it plays or displays at full resolution.
- Return to Gallery and search by date or folder.
- If Gallery does not show it immediately, restart the app or the phone and allow media indexing to complete.
- Compare the number of selected cloud items with the number of local files before deleting anything online.
- Check both photos and videos; a video can take longer to download and index than a still image.
Restore a photo that was actually deleted
If a file is absent from both Gallery and the normal OneDrive folders, inspect the Recycle Bin before assuming permanent loss. Samsung’s US support page states that OneDrive photos and videos remain in the Recycle Bin for 93 days. That period is the duration stated by that support page; account type, administrator settings or organizational policy can affect retention.
Restore in the OneDrive app
- Open OneDrive.
- Tap the Me or profile tab.
- Tap Recycle bin.
- Select the photo or video.
- Open More options.
- Tap Restore.
OneDrive returns the item to its original location. Reopen that folder after restoration and download a local copy if you need it visible in Samsung Gallery.
Use OneDrive on the web
Sign in to the correct Microsoft account in a browser, open the deleted-files or Recycle Bin area, select the item and use the site’s restore command. The exact web labels can change, but the operation is the same: restore first, then locate the original folder and download if required.

Why a sync deletion can affect more than one device
The old Gallery connection was a bidirectional sync rather than an independent archive. Microsoft warns that changes or deletions made through Gallery or another OneDrive endpoint could propagate to other synced devices and move files to the Recycle Bin. If a picture vanished after a cleanup or synchronization event, check the Recycle Bin immediately rather than creating new copies or emptying storage.
Keep uploading new photos with OneDrive Camera backup
Camera backup is Microsoft’s stated replacement for uploading new pictures to OneDrive. It is a continuing upload workflow: it sends camera photos and videos to the selected Microsoft account, but it does not restore Gallery’s former album browsing or bidirectional synchronization.
Turn on Camera backup
- Open the OneDrive app and sign in.
- Open the account profile.
- Select Camera backup.
- Confirm that the intended Microsoft account is selected.
- Turn Camera backup on.
- When Android asks, grant OneDrive access to all photos and videos you want backed up.
Microsoft says new photos and videos upload automatically when Camera backup is enabled, OneDrive has permission to access all relevant media and the account remains within its storage quota. If you choose limited photo access, newly created images outside that permission set cannot upload.

Check the conditions that stop automatic uploads
- Wrong account: Camera backup may be uploading to a different Microsoft account than the one containing your old Gallery library.
- Permission limited: Android’s photo permission must include the folders or media you expect OneDrive to back up.
- Quota exhausted: Uploads stop when the Microsoft account has no available storage.
- Battery or network restrictions: Android may delay background transfers until the phone is charging or connected to an allowed network.
- Non-camera folders: Camera backup is designed for new camera media; it should not be treated as a complete mirror of every Gallery album.
After enabling it, take one test picture and wait for it to appear in OneDrive. Confirm the destination account and upload date. This simple test catches wrong-account and permission problems before you rely on the feature for an important event.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose the right recovery and preservation route
Your best route depends on whether you are recovering existing files or setting up protection for new ones, and whether you need Gallery visibility or only cloud access.
| Goal | Route | Copy location | Storage requirement | Visible in Samsung Gallery? | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recover existing cloud photos | Find them in OneDrive | Cloud | Available OneDrive quota | Not until downloaded locally | Requires the correct Microsoft account and an intact cloud copy. |
| Put selected files back on the phone | OneDrive or Gallery download | Phone storage | Enough free local space for the originals | Yes, after media indexing | Large libraries may exceed available phone storage. |
| Recover a recently deleted file | OneDrive Recycle Bin restore | Original OneDrive folder after restoration | Recycle Bin retention still active | Only after a local download | The stated Samsung period is 93 days; items outside retention may not be restorable. |
| Upload new camera photos | OneDrive Camera backup | Cloud | Available OneDrive quota and phone permissions | Gallery remains independent | It is upload-only, not the old bidirectional Gallery experience. |
| Create another local copy | Copy downloaded files to a compatible USB-C flash drive | External local storage | Drive capacity plus phone/OTG support | Only the phone copy appears in Gallery | Compatibility varies; Samsung’s cited instructions do not endorse a particular drive. |
How storage affects the choice
Cloud access requires room in the OneDrive account for new uploads, while local recovery requires free phone storage for the original files. These are separate limits. A phone can be full even when OneDrive has plenty of capacity, and OneDrive can be at quota even when the phone has space. Check both before starting a migration. If the library is larger than either destination, work in priority order and keep verified copies in another compatible location.
Troubleshoot photos that still seem missing
OneDrive opens but shows an empty library
Verify the signed-in email address first. Samsung and Microsoft accounts do not have to share the same address. Check both Photos and the folders view, because an album name in Gallery may not match the OneDrive folder name. If you used a family, school or work account, that account may have separate retention and administrator rules.
The file is in OneDrive but the Download button is unavailable
Try selecting the item first, then open the more-options menu. If the app is offline, update its connection and retry. A file that is online-only still needs to be downloaded before another app can open it. If the Gallery integration menu has disappeared, use OneDrive’s own download command instead.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The phone reports insufficient space
Do not start by deleting cloud originals. Free local storage, download in smaller groups and verify each group before continuing. Move verified local copies to another compatible storage destination if you need to recover a large library but cannot keep everything on the phone.
The restored file does not return to the expected album
Recycle Bin restoration returns an item to its original OneDrive location, not necessarily to a newly created Gallery album. Locate it in OneDrive, download it and then organize the local copy in Gallery. Avoid moving or deleting the cloud version until the local copy opens correctly.

The Recycle Bin is empty
An empty bin can mean the retention period elapsed, the wrong account is open, an administrator policy removed the item, or the file was permanently deleted. Search every likely Microsoft account and folder. If the item is absent from OneDrive and the applicable Recycle Bin, this guide cannot promise restoration from the former Gallery connection.
Camera backup is on but new pictures do not upload
Open Camera backup and confirm the destination account. Review Android’s photo permissions and allow access to all required media. Check the account’s remaining quota, keep OneDrive signed in and temporarily remove battery restrictions if uploads pause in the background. Take one test photo, wait for it to appear in OneDrive, then confirm the upload date and account before relying on the workflow.
Use a second local copy for long-term preservation
After downloading originals, you can copy them to a USB-C flash drive as an additional local copy. This is optional, not required for OneDrive recovery. Confirm that the phone supports USB-C host or OTG operation and that the drive’s file system is readable by the device. Capacity, power draw and file-system compatibility differ among phones and drives.
Copy in batches, open several files directly from the drive and compare counts with the source folder. Keep at least one copy disconnected from the phone after verification; a second copy is useful only if it is not exposed to the same accidental deletion or corruption.
What this transition cannot recover
The end of direct Gallery sync does not provide a separate archive of files that were never uploaded. If a photo is absent from OneDrive, absent from the Recycle Bin and not present on the phone, another backup or storage location is required. The former integration also cannot recreate album metadata, edits or organization that existed only in Samsung Gallery once no corresponding file remains.
For files that do exist in OneDrive, the practical sequence is straightforward: locate the correct account, restore deleted items while retention allows it, download the originals you need locally, and enable Camera backup for new pictures. That preserves access without depending on the discontinued Gallery connection.

Will OneDrive Camera backup recreate Samsung Gallery sync?
No. Camera backup uploads new camera photos and videos to OneDrive. It does not recreate the former bidirectional synchronization or Gallery’s integrated album browsing.
Why are new photos not uploading with Camera backup?
Confirm the destination Microsoft account, grant OneDrive access to all required photos and videos, check available OneDrive quota, and review Android battery or network restrictions. Test with one new photo before relying on the setup.
Can I recover photos that were never in OneDrive?
Not through the discontinued Gallery connection. Check the phone, another backup or another storage location. If the file is absent from OneDrive and its Recycle Bin, restoration cannot be promised.
Can I copy recovered photos to a USB-C flash drive?
Yes, as an optional second local copy. Verify that the Samsung phone supports USB-C host or OTG operation and can read the drive’s file system. Compatibility and capacity vary by device and drive.

The Bottom Line
Samsung Gallery–OneDrive sync ended on September 30, 2026, but that did not delete existing OneDrive files. Find them in the correct Microsoft account, restore deleted items from the Recycle Bin within the stated 93-day period, and download originals for local Gallery access. Enable OneDrive Camera backup for new photos, and verify permissions, quota and storage before trusting the new workflow.
