For files still on the phone, Google’s standard USB transfer requires you to unlock the device and choose File transfer. If touch has failed but the display still works, a compatible OTG adapter and mouse may let you operate the phone; if neither display nor touch works, the next step may be model-specific repair—not a guaranteed software workaround.
First, identify what still works
“Broken screen” can mean a cracked but usable display, a screen that shows an image but ignores touch, a black display, or a phone that will not power on. The available route depends on which functions remain and whether the phone can be unlocked.

- Display and touch work: check backups, then use ordinary USB file transfer if needed.

Check cloud copies before connecting accessories
Using another phone or computer, sign in to the Google Account used on the damaged phone. Check Google Photos for backed-up photos and videos, and Google Drive for files. Also check any other cloud account or computer backup you personally used; the presence of a Google Account alone does not establish that a particular file was copied.
Google describes photos and videos backup separately from Android device backup, and notes that some apps cannot back up or restore all their data. Check the relevant app or service for important content rather than assuming one device backup contains every photo, download, or app file.

If the phone unlocks: copy files by USB
Google’s documented transfer procedure requires both access to the unlocked phone and selecting its USB mode. A cable that only charges will not transfer files.
- Connect the phone to a computer with a data-capable USB cable.
- Unlock the phone using its normal credential.
- Open the phone’s USB notification.
- Under “Use USB for,” select File transfer, as directed in Google Android Help.
- On the computer, open the phone’s storage and copy the folders or files you need.
If the phone does not appear, try a cable known to support data and another computer USB port. If you cannot unlock the phone or select the transfer mode, this workflow does not provide a way around that restriction.

If touch is broken but the display is visible
On compatible Galaxy phones, Samsung describes connecting a mouse through an OTG adapter. If the remaining display shows the interface, a mouse may let you enter the normal credential and then choose USB transfer or send files to a backup destination. Samsung’s instructions are device-specific, not a guarantee for every Android phone: check the exact model’s OTG support, connector, and port before buying an adapter.

If the display and touch are both unusable
Some Galaxy phones support a monitor and input devices through a suitable hub or DeX-compatible setup. Samsung warns that not every phone supports HDMI output, so confirm external-video support for the exact model before purchasing a USB-C HDMI hub or dock. A compatible setup may restore a way to view and operate the phone, but it still depends on the device being able to start and accept the normal unlock credential.
Samsung documents these options in its guidance for Galaxy phones whose screen does not respond and its external-monitor troubleshooting. These are Galaxy-specific instructions; do not assume the same hub or video output works with another Android model.

When the phone cannot be operated
Google’s ordinary USB procedure requires unlocking and selecting File transfer, while Samsung’s accessory options depend on compatible hardware and usable input or display paths. The cited guidance does not establish a universal way to retrieve local files from a phone that cannot be unlocked or operated.

Consider asking a reputable repair provider whether it can restore enough screen function for normal access, or consult a specialist data-recovery service where appropriate. Ask about the exact model, data-handling practices, location, and likely procedure before handing over the device. Neither repair nor specialist recovery guarantees that the files will be recovered or that data will be preserved.

Avoid steps that can erase the data
Do not factory-reset the phone as a recovery step. Do not wipe it, unlock its bootloader, or rely on unspecified recovery software as a way to retrieve photos. These steps are not established by the cited support guidance as a safe route to local files.
