How to Recover Photos and Files from a Corrupted or Unreadable SD Card

Stop using the SD card immediately. Do not take more photos, copy files onto it, format it, or accept a “scan and repair” prompt. Those actions can overwrite or alter data that is still recoverable. If the card can be read consistently, scan it with recovery software and save every result to a different healthy drive. If it produces I/O errors, disconnects, or stalls, make a sector-by-sector image first and work from that image.

Recovery is not guaranteed. A tool can rebuild files only from sectors it can read; bytes that the card can no longer return cannot be recreated. File names and folders may also be lost, especially when signature-based recovery is required.

Choose the right approach before touching the card

“Corrupted” can describe two very different problems. A damaged filesystem may make folders disappear while the memory chips still read normally. An unstable card may return I/O errors, freeze the computer, or repeatedly disconnect. The first case can often be scanned directly. The second should be imaged before any recovery scan.

What you observe Safest next step Important limitation
Files disappeared, but the card opens and reads consistently Run a recovery scan such as PhotoRec and save results to another drive. Recovered files may have generic names and no original folders.
The card was formatted Stop using it and scan for remaining data. Continued use after formatting can overwrite recoverable sectors.
Repeated I/O errors, stalls, read failures, or disconnects Avoid filesystem repair; create an image with an error-tolerant imaging tool, then scan the image. Unreadable sectors can leave files incomplete or permanently unrecoverable.
A phone’s removable card cannot connect to the computer Put the card in a compatible USB SD card reader. The reader only provides access; it does not repair or recover data.

Preserve the original data

Stop every write operation

Remove the card from the camera, phone, drone, or recorder as soon as you notice a problem. Do not shoot another picture, copy a file to the card, delete anything, or run an in-device “repair.” Even small changes can reuse sectors containing deleted or partially damaged files. PhotoRec documentation gives the core rule: “Remember, you must avoid writing anything on the filesystem that was holding the data.”

Decline format and repair prompts

Windows, macOS, cameras, and phones may say that the card must be formatted, initialized, or scanned before it can be used. Choose Cancel, Eject, or No. The SD Card Formatter user manual states: “Once formatting has started, all recorded information will no longer be available.” That means ordinary access is lost; it does not prove that every underlying byte has been erased, so recovery may still be possible if you stop immediately. Do not let the operating system run an automatic repair when the files matter more than making the card usable.

Keep the card unchanged

Set the physical write-protect tab on a full-size SD card to the locked position when possible. The tab is only a signal to the host and cannot protect against every adapter or device, so still eject the card and avoid using it. Keep the original card in a safe place after imaging or recovery begins; never use it as the destination for recovered files.

Check access without changing the card

Try one controlled connection

If there is no obvious physical damage and the card has not repeatedly failed, try a known-good, compatible reader or another computer once. A different reader can rule out a bad slot, dirty contacts, or an incompatible adapter. For a removable phone card, the PhotoRec FAQ recommends removing it from the phone and placing it in a USB card reader.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not keep switching devices if the card clicks electronically, vanishes, causes long system freezes, or reports read errors. Repeated retries can stress a failing controller and consume time without making more data readable. If the card becomes hot, smells burned, is cracked, or has damaged contacts, disconnect it and consider professional recovery rather than experimenting.

Record what the computer reports

Note whether the card appears with the correct capacity, a zero-byte capacity, an unrecognized filesystem, or no capacity at all. Record exact error messages and whether a directory listing works. This information helps distinguish a logical filesystem problem from unstable hardware and prevents you from accidentally selecting the wrong drive during imaging.

Recover a card that reads reliably

When the card can be read from beginning to end without repeated errors, a signature-based recovery scan is the least invasive practical method. PhotoRec is free and open-source software that searches for known file signatures, so it can find photos and documents even when directory information is damaged.

Prepare a separate destination

Use a healthy internal or external drive with more free space than the files you expect to recover. The destination must not be the SD card or another partition on the same failing device. PhotoRec’s instructions explicitly require a destination other than the source filesystem because writing results to the source can overwrite additional lost data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the scan

  1. Connect the card through a reliable reader and identify it by its capacity and model. Do not select your computer’s system drive by mistake.
  2. Start PhotoRec and select the SD card, not an individual recovered folder.
  3. Choose the relevant partition when it is listed. If the partition or filesystem is missing, select the option to search the whole device or the unallocated area, as appropriate.
  4. Choose the filesystem family requested by the program. Camera cards using FAT or exFAT normally use the non- ext2/ext3/ext4 choice; follow the label shown by your version.
  5. Choose whether to scan only unallocated space or the entire partition. For a corrupted or reformatted card, scan the entire partition so remnants outside the current filesystem are included.
  6. In the destination selector, choose a folder on the separate healthy drive. Confirm the destination before starting.
  7. Let the scan finish without disconnecting the card. Large cards can take hours, and stopping early may leave files undiscovered.

Understand PhotoRec’s output

PhotoRec identifies content from internal signatures rather than trusting the damaged directory. It can therefore recover pictures from a corrupted filesystem, but it generally cannot restore the original names, timestamps, or folder hierarchy. Results are commonly placed in sequentially named directories with generic filenames. Plan to sort them afterward by file type, embedded camera metadata, dimensions, and capture date.

A signature scan may find fragments or false positives. A recovered image that opens only partially, shows gray blocks, or has a truncated length depended on sectors that were already damaged. Do not delete the original card merely because a first scan produced files; keep it unchanged until you have checked representative results.

When the card has I/O errors: image it first

Repeated read errors change the procedure. A filesystem repair tool tries to modify structures on the same media, while an imaging tool is designed to copy whatever can still be read and record what failed. GNU ddrescue’s manual warns: “Never try to repair a file system on a drive with I/O errors; you will probably lose even more data.”

Why an image is safer

A sector-level image gives you a stable working copy. You can run multiple scans against the image without repeatedly stressing the original card. GNU ddrescue copies readable areas first and maintains a mapfile recording completed and failed regions, so an interrupted operation can resume instead of starting over.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare before running ddrescue

  • Use a destination drive with enough free space for the card’s full advertised capacity, not merely the amount of data you hope to recover.
  • Identify the source by size, partition layout, and connection details. Device names can change after reconnecting.
  • Ensure the destination path is on a different physical drive. Reversing source and destination can overwrite the card or another disk immediately.
  • Keep the card and reader connected directly and prevent the computer from sleeping.
  • For irreplaceable data, repeated disconnections, or uncertainty about device identification, stop and use a qualified professional service instead of improvising.

A cautious command-line pattern

On a Linux system, a typical first pass uses a source device and an image file on another mounted drive:

sudo ddrescue --force --no-scrape /dev/sdX /recovery-drive/sdcard.img /recovery-drive/sdcard.map

/dev/sdX is an example device identifier, not a value to copy blindly. Replace it only after verifying the card with a disk-listing tool and checking its capacity. The image and mapfile paths must point to the healthy destination drive. The --force option can overwrite an existing destination image, which is why the destination check is critical. A later pass can retry difficult areas using the same mapfile, but the exact options depend on your operating system and ddrescue version. The GNU ddrescue manual identifies version 1.30 as dated 1 January 2026; consult the manual installed on your system for syntax and device-handling details.

If the card repeatedly disappears, no imaging program can make the controller respond. Power-cycling and repeated reconnects may reduce the chance of a clean image. In that situation, preserve the card and seek specialist help before further attempts.

Scan the image, then save recovered files elsewhere

Once an image exists, disconnect or write-protect the original card and point PhotoRec or another recovery program at the image file. Select the whole image if the partition table is damaged. Use a destination on a third healthy drive when possible; at minimum, never write into the image file, its source card, or the mounted filesystem represented by the image.

Imaging does not repair unreadable sectors. It simply isolates the readable content and documents the gaps. A photo whose header is readable but whose later data was in a failed region may open with missing lower portions. Documents can show missing pages or damaged archives. Test a sample from every important file type before deciding that recovery is complete.

Recovering after an SD card was formatted

Formatting replaces or rebuilds filesystem structures, but it is not the same as proving that every data sector was securely erased. If the card was formatted and then immediately removed, stop using it and scan the entire card with a recovery tool. Do not create new folders, take test pictures, or copy files back onto it.

A quick format may leave much of the previous content until new data reuses those sectors; a full format, secure erase, or extensive subsequent use can leave far less. The available evidence does not establish a universal recovery percentage, so no honest tool can promise a particular number of photos. Recovery depends on which sectors were overwritten or unreadable and on the file types present.

Using a phone, tablet, or camera as the source

Removable microSD cards

Power the device down before removing a microSD card when possible. Place it in a correctly sized adapter and a USB SD card reader. If the phone encrypted the card as internal storage, removing it may not produce files that another computer can interpret; the recovery steps in this guide apply to ordinary removable storage whose data is accessible outside the phone.

Cards that work in the camera but not the computer

Try a reader that supports the card’s physical format and capacity. A reader can bypass a defective camera slot or phone connection, but it does not repair the filesystem. If the card works only intermittently in both devices, treat it as an I/O-error case and image it rather than repeatedly browsing it.

Organize and verify what was recovered

Check files systematically

  1. Open a sample of photos from each recovered directory, including the largest and smallest files.
  2. Check that images display fully, not just that a thumbnail appears.
  3. Test videos by seeking through the middle and end; a playable opening segment does not prove the whole file is intact.
  4. Open documents and archives with their normal applications and note any corruption warnings.
  5. Copy verified files to a second backup drive or cloud destination before doing extensive renaming.

Sort generic filenames safely

Keep the original recovered tree untouched and make a working copy for organization. Group files by extension, then use embedded EXIF capture dates and camera model data where available. Avoid renaming until you have at least one backup, because a mistake during sorting should not affect the only recovered copy.

Know what cannot be fixed

Software cannot recreate sectors that return no data. If a file depended on a missing region, changing its extension, opening it in a different viewer, or running filesystem repair will not restore the absent bytes. Some specialist tools can rebuild a damaged header when the payload is present, but that is different from recovering information that was never read from the card.

When professional recovery is the safer choice

Consider stopping DIY attempts when the card has physical damage, becomes hot, repeatedly disconnects, reports the wrong capacity, or contains irreplaceable work and family records. Professional services may have hardware and controlled procedures for unstable media, but costs, locations, success policies, and turnaround times vary. No universal success rate is established, so ask for a diagnostic assessment and a clear fee policy before authorizing work. Do not send the only copy of an image or continue experimenting while waiting for a decision.

Common mistakes and their consequences

  • Formatting to make the prompt disappear: changes filesystem structures and can overwrite recoverable data.
  • Running “check disk” or filesystem repair on a failing card: writes changes while unreadable sectors are still unresolved.
  • Saving recovered files to the SD card: can overwrite files that have not yet been found.
  • Scanning an unstable card repeatedly: increases connection time and can turn a partial read into a worse failure.
  • Choosing the wrong source or destination in an imaging command: can overwrite the card or another disk.
  • Assuming a thumbnail proves recovery: thumbnails may be cached separately from the complete photo.

Frequently asked questions

How do I recover photos from a corrupted SD card without formatting it?

Cancel the format prompt, stop writing to the card, and scan it with PhotoRec while saving results to a different drive. If the card produces read errors, create an image first and scan that image.

My SD card says it needs to be formatted. Can I get my files back?

Possibly. Formatting a card does not by itself establish that every underlying sector was erased, but any use after the prompt can overwrite data. Remove the card and attempt recovery before formatting.

Can I recover the original folder names and filenames?

Not reliably with signature-based recovery. PhotoRec can recover file content from damaged filesystems, but its output commonly uses generic names and does not preserve the original directory structure.

Is a USB SD card reader a recovery tool?

No. It is an access device that can connect a removable card to a computer or bypass a faulty host slot. Recovery still requires scanning or imaging software, and the reader cannot reconstruct unreadable sectors.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What percentage of photos can recovery software restore?

There is no general percentage that applies to every card, and the cited official documentation does not provide a recovery-rate statistic. Results depend on overwritten data, unreadable sectors, filesystem damage, and file fragmentation.

Should I keep the original card after recovery?

Yes. Keep it unchanged until you have opened and verified the recovered files and made at least one additional backup. It may contain files a later scan can still find.
