After a factory reset, photos and contacts can usually be recovered only if another copy still exists—in a cloud account, backup, SIM or memory card, computer, or another device. Start by checking Google Photos and the accounts used before the reset, then restore any available Google or Samsung backup. A completed reset removes personal data stored on the phone; it does not necessarily erase copies already synced elsewhere.
First, understand what the reset erased
Samsung says a factory reset permanently deletes personal data from the phone, including photos and contacts. A factory reset is not the same as restarting the device. Recovery generally means retrieving a separate copy, rather than undoing the reset. The Samsung factory-reset guidance describes what the reset removes.

Cloud copies are a separate matter: resetting the phone does not necessarily delete items already synced to an account. The key questions are where each item was stored, whether backup or sync had completed before the reset, and which account contains the copy.
Recover photos and contacts in this order
- Check Google Photos. On the reset phone or another device, sign in to the Google Account used before the reset and open Google Photos. Check that you have selected the right account and look through its library. Google says photos and videos backed up to Google Photos are available there; they are not necessarily part of the Android device-backup restore. See Google’s backup and restore guidance.
- Restore an available Google device backup during setup. If you have not finished setting up the reset phone, sign in with the original Google Account and choose the offered backup when prompted. Review its details, where available, to see which data categories it contains. Google says a restore can take up to 24 hours to complete; some data may not appear immediately. The restore depends on what was backed up and on device and software compatibility.
- Check Google Contacts. Add the Google Account that held the contacts. Contacts saved to that account sync automatically. If contacts were stored only on the phone or SIM, account sync will not bring them back; look for a separate backup or import the SIM copy. Contacts synced through another account require access to that account. See Google’s instructions for restoring contacts.
- Look for a Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch backup. If you created a Samsung backup before the reset, sign in to the associated Samsung account and check the restore options. If you used Smart Switch, open it and select the available backup source, such as a computer or another device. Samsung menus and supported categories vary by phone model, software version, region, and backup configuration. Follow Samsung’s backup and restore guidance.
- Check other places a copy may exist. Inspect a SIM card, removable SD card, computer, external backup, or another phone or tablet that may still contain the files or contacts. Treat each as a separate copy; an item stored there was not necessarily included in a cloud backup.
Which recovery route fits the missing data?
| Where the copy may be | What it may restore | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Google Photos | Photos and videos backed up to that library | Use the Google Account that had backup enabled and verify the selected account in Photos. |
| Google device backup | Device data included in the backup; available categories depend on the backup | Choose the backup during Android setup and review its details. Restore compatibility matters. |
| Google Contacts | Contacts saved and synced to that Google Account | Add the correct account. Phone-only or SIM-only contacts need a separate copy or import. |
| Samsung Cloud | Categories supported and actually saved in the Samsung backup | Use the Samsung account associated with the backup; options vary by device and configuration. |
| Smart Switch or a local computer backup | Data included in that particular backup | Open Smart Switch and select the computer or device backup that was created before the reset. |
| SIM, SD card, or another device | Only items separately stored or copied there | Check the physical card or device directly; these copies are not guaranteed to be part of a cloud restore. |
Why a restore may be incomplete
- The wrong account is signed in. Photos, contacts, and backups may belong to different Google or Samsung accounts. Check each account you used before the reset.
- The missing item was never backed up or synced. A backup restores only data it contains; it cannot supply a copy that was never saved.
- Some content is excluded from Android transfer or backup. Google lists examples including media in hidden folders, downloads, data from non-Google accounts, and app data from apps that do not use Android backup. See Google’s device-transfer guidance.
- The Android versions do not match in the supported direction. Google says a backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower version. A restore may therefore be unavailable or incomplete.
- The restore is still running. Google’s estimate is up to 24 hours. Allow time for the process and check again before concluding that all eligible data is missing.
- The Samsung backup route differs on your phone. Menus, supported data, and availability depend on model, software, region, and how the backup was configured.
If no copy turns up
The official recovery guidance describes restoring backups and synced copies; it does not establish a general way to retrieve photos or contacts erased from a phone’s internal storage by a completed factory reset when no other copy exists. Be wary of an app or paid service promising guaranteed recovery in that situation. A recovery product cannot be assumed to recreate data without a surviving source.

Factory Reset Protection is not data recovery
After some reset methods, Android may ask for a Google Account previously associated with the phone. This is Factory Reset Protection, an ownership check—not a way to restore photos or contacts. Use the account credentials associated with the device and follow the on-screen verification process. Google explains the device-protection requirement.
