You may be able to recover permanently deleted files without paying, but there is no guarantee: the result depends on whether the data has been overwritten, which storage device was used, and whether a backup or recovery window is available. Start by minimizing use of the affected drive, check built-in recovery options and backups, and only then consider a free recovery utility. Save any recovered files to a different drive or partition—not the source.
What to do first after permanent deletion
- Stop writing to the affected storage. Avoid downloading, installing, updating, or saving files to that drive. If it is an external drive or memory card, disconnect it once you have identified it; do not format it. Microsoft advises: “If you want to increase your chances of recovering a file, minimize or avoid using your computer.” (Microsoft Support: Windows File Recovery) New data may overwrite file data that is still present.
- Check simple recovery options before scanning. Search the Recycle Bin or Trash by filename and likely folder. Then check any cloud-service recovery area and available backups. A synced device is not automatically a backup: deletion may sync to it, too.
- If you use recovery software, choose a separate destination. Recovered files should be written to a different physical drive or partition from the source. If you are unsure which device is which, pause and identify them before scanning or saving.

Windows Recycle Bin and other backups
Look in the Recycle Bin first, even if you believe the file was permanently deleted; it may still be there or may have been overlooked. Also check any backup you already use. Restoring from an existing backup avoids writing a recovery scan’s output to the affected source.

Mac: restore from Time Machine
If Time Machine was enabled and has a backup containing the item, open the folder where the file was stored, enter Time Machine, browse the backups, select the item, and choose Restore. Apple says restored items return to their original location. See Apple’s instructions for restoring items backed up with Time Machine.

Free recovery tools: choose by operating system and storage
| Option | Best fit | Important limits | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows File Recovery | Local storage on Windows, including internal, external, and USB devices | Command-line tool; does not support cloud storage or network file shares. Source and destination must be different physical partitions. The right syntax depends on the filesystem and situation. | Free; available from Microsoft Store |
| PhotoRec | Windows, macOS, or Linux; file recovery from supported storage media | Free, open-source file-carving tool. It may recover file contents without original names or folder structure, and support for a file type does not guarantee an intact recovery. | Free |
Windows: Windows File Recovery
Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery is intended for local files that cannot be restored from the Recycle Bin. It is a command-line app available from the Microsoft Store. Because its commands and modes vary with the source filesystem and recovery scenario, use Microsoft’s current instructions rather than guessing at a command. Choose a destination on a different physical partition, with enough free space for the recovered files.
Windows, macOS, or Linux: PhotoRec
PhotoRec, documented by CGSecurity, is free, open-source, and available across these operating systems. It searches for file data, which can be useful when filesystem information is damaged or lost. This file-carving approach may not preserve original filenames or folder structure. Its support for many file and storage types is not a promise that every file will be recovered intact. Set the output destination to a separate drive or partition, not the affected source.

Why recovery can fail, especially on SSDs
Deleting a file can mark its storage space as available without immediately erasing all the underlying data. If new writes reuse that space, some or all of the file may be overwritten. Microsoft specifically warns that this can happen on SSDs. That is a reason to stop using the affected storage promptly, not proof that every SSD deletion is unrecoverable. There is no universal recovery rate to rely on; a utility cannot restore data that is no longer available on the device.
When to stop DIY recovery attempts
If a drive makes unusual noises, repeatedly disconnects, or otherwise appears to be failing, repeated scans and improvised repairs may add risk. Consider stopping rather than experimenting, especially when the files are irreplaceable. A professional recovery service may be an option, but results, availability, and costs depend on the device and provider; no particular provider or price is established here.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Do not install a recovery utility onto the affected drive if you can avoid it.
- Do not save recovered files back to the source.
- Do not assume paid software can reverse overwriting or recover data that is no longer available.
A separate external drive can serve as a destination for recovered files, but it does not itself recover data. Confirm that you can distinguish it from the source and that it has enough free space before starting.
