In Samsung Messages, deleted texts may be restored from Trash within 30 days if the feature is available. In Google Messages, check Archived first; Samsung says deleted Google Messages texts cannot be recovered unless a copy exists in a backup or on another phone. Cloud and Smart Switch restores also require a prior backup or source device that contains the messages.
First, check the messaging app and look for a hidden conversation
Open the app you used for texting and confirm whether it is Samsung Messages or Google Messages. Menus and recovery behavior differ, and the app available on a Galaxy phone can vary by model, software version, carrier, and market.

Samsung says Samsung Messages is no longer supported on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or higher in the US starting July 2026. Galaxy S25 phones do not come with Samsung Messages preinstalled. These changes do not establish which app contains older messages on a particular phone, so check the installed app and its conversation list before trying a restore. Samsung’s app availability guidance is relevant to device context.

If you used Samsung Messages, check Trash before restoring a backup. Samsung says messages in Trash can be restored within 30 days of deletion. The feature must be available on your device; the menu may be absent if Trash was disabled, you used a different app, or your software has changed. Samsung’s instructions for recovering deleted messages give the current steps:

- Open Samsung Messages.
- Tap More options, then tap Trash.
- Touch and hold the message you want to recover.
- Tap Restore.
If the conversation is not in Trash, this route does not recover it. Check whether it was archived or included in a backup instead.
Unarchive a conversation in Google Messages
Archiving removes a conversation from the main list without deleting it. In Google Messages, tap your profile icon, tap Archived, select the conversation, and tap Unarchive. Samsung distinguishes archived conversations from deleted texts: its support guide says deleted texts in Google Messages are permanently deleted, while archived conversations can be recovered. Restore messages from a backup or another phone
When the conversation is absent from Trash and Archived, the remaining supported routes depend on a copy that already exists: a Samsung Cloud or Google account backup, a Smart Switch backup, or the original phone. A backup only helps if it predates the loss and included the messages. Check that the backup exists and review its contents or available restore options before resetting or changing a phone.
Samsung Cloud
On a supported Galaxy phone, go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Restore data under Samsung Cloud. Choose the device backup, select Messages, and restore. This works only for messages included in a prior backup. Samsung Cloud availability and supported backup items can differ by country, carrier, and model; confirm that your device offers the relevant backup and restore options. Google account backup
Samsung documents restoring messages from a Google account backup during initial setup of a new phone or after a factory reset. The backup must contain the messages, and the destination phone must run the same Android version as the source phone or a newer one. Because this process may require setting up a phone or erasing its current data, verify the backup and understand the reset consequences before proceeding. Samsung’s Google backup restore guidance.
Smart Switch from a phone or saved backup
Smart Switch can transfer message history from another phone or restore a backup saved on a computer or external storage. For a computer backup, the message data cannot be read on the computer; it becomes readable after transfer to a phone. For a backup on an SD card, USB flash drive, or SSD, Samsung provides an on-device restore flow. Connecting USB storage may require an OTG adapter, depending on the phone and storage connector. The adapter only connects the storage; it does not recover data or substitute for a backup. Samsung’s Smart Switch external-storage instructions.

What if there is no Trash copy, archive, source phone, or backup?
The documented recovery options depend on a copy of the messages still being available. Samsung says deleted Google Messages texts are permanently deleted; its Samsung Messages Trash route is limited to the stated 30-day window. If the texts are not in Trash or Archived and no usable backup or source phone contains them, the support guidance cited here does not establish another recovery method. Avoid treating a cable, adapter, or restore app as a replacement for a saved copy.
