First, identify what happened
“Recover” can mean finding a recording saved somewhere unexpected, opening a file left behind after a crash, fixing an MP4 that will not play, or trying to restore a deleted file. These are different problems. Start by locating the file and identifying its extension; do not assume OBS can restore a recording that no longer exists.

- No file found: check OBS’s Recording Path.
- A file remains after recording stopped unexpectedly: preserve a copy and check its format.
- An MP4 or MOV will not open: determine whether it was regular or fragmented/hybrid recording output.
- The file was deleted or is zero bytes: avoid treating it as a routine remux problem; recovery is uncertain.
Find the recording OBS saved
OBS writes recordings to the destination configured as the Recording Path. Open OBS and inspect the recording output settings for that path, then check the exact folder. The OBS Project’s Standard Recording Output Guide documents Recording Path as the destination for recordings.
If you are unsure which file to look for, search the configured folder or likely output locations for OBS recording extensions such as .mkv, .mp4, .mov, or .flv. Confirm the file’s date, size, and duration before deciding it is the missing recording. OBS documentation does not establish that the program keeps an automatic archive or can restore files deleted from the destination.

Recover an interrupted recording that still exists
Protect the original first
Before trying to repair or convert anything, copy the file to another location and troubleshoot the copy. That preserves the original in case a conversion fails or changes the file. If the storage device may be failing and the footage matters, minimize further activity on it and consider qualified data-recovery help.
If the file is MKV
Try opening the untouched copy in a media player. OBS recommends MKV for resilience: its format guide says an unfinished MKV recording remains playable and recoverable after an interruption. That is a format-level advantage, not a guarantee that every file or every portion of its footage survived.

- Select the MKV source recording.
- Run Remux and note where OBS saves the output.
- Open the resulting file and check its duration and playback before relying on it.
Remuxing changes the container for compatibility; it does not promise to repair all damaged media. OBS’s remux interface warns that the output may be incomplete. Scrub through the beginning, middle, and end, and check expected audio and video tracks. A successful completion message alone does not establish that the entire recording was recovered. The command and output behavior are described in the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide.

If an MP4 or MOV will not play
Not every OBS MP4 or MOV has the same interruption behavior. A regular MP4/MOV needs finalization; if recording is interrupted before that process completes, the file may not be recoverable. OBS recommends against recording directly to regular MP4/MOV for this reason.
Fragmented formats write self-contained chunks, so a recording does not have to be finalized in the same way to remain usable. Hybrid formats combine fragmentation with broader compatibility. If you do not know which mode was used, check the recording format selected in OBS and consult the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide. Do not assume that remuxing will repair a damaged regular MP4/MOV; the documented remux workflow is a compatibility conversion, not a universal recovery service.

If OBS or the computer crashed
An OBS-only crash and a whole-computer crash are not equivalent. When OBS stops but the system and storage remain available, an MKV file may retain usable data. A full system crash can also affect filesystem metadata, making the situation more serious than a normal interrupted recording.
Community support discussions include case-specific reports of surviving, nonzero MKV files being salvaged by remuxing, alongside differing accounts about zero-byte files and a Windows disk-check anecdote. These are not official, cross-platform recovery instructions or a reliable success rate. A zero-byte file is neither a universal proof that recovery is possible nor enough evidence to promise it is impossible. Do not run generic filesystem repair commands on valuable footage based only on forum anecdotes; if the drive may be failing, stop unnecessary writes and seek qualified help.

If the recording was deleted
The OBS documentation does not provide an undelete feature or a verified deleted-file recovery procedure. If the recording is important, stop writing new data to the affected storage where practical, check the operating system’s own deleted-item facilities, and use recovery guidance specific to your operating system and storage setup. The right procedure depends on those details, and recovery cannot be guaranteed.
Choose a safer recording format next time

These descriptions follow the OBS Project’s Audio/Video Formats Guide. Check the exact mode available in your OBS version and confirm that your intended editor supports it. For a resilient workflow, keep the recording in a suitable format such as MKV, then remux a copy when an MP4 deliverable is needed.
Common problems and what to do
- The Recording Path folder appears empty: verify the path shown in OBS, then check that exact location and search likely output extensions. Do not infer that OBS can restore a deleted file.
- Remux completes, but the video is shorter than expected: OBS warns that remuxed output may be incomplete. Check the original copy, compare durations, and inspect multiple points in the file; remuxing cannot guarantee missing footage will return.
- An MKV exists but will not open: keep the original untouched, test a copy in another suitable player, and only then try remuxing the copy. The MKV recommendation does not mean every damaged file is recoverable.
- A regular MP4/MOV is unplayable after a crash: finalization may have been interrupted. The cited OBS guidance does not promise a repair method for this case.
- The file is zero bytes or the drive is behaving abnormally: treat it as a possible storage problem, not a standard OBS setting issue. Avoid unnecessary writes or blanket repair commands if the footage is valuable; seek qualified help.
- You cannot find a deleted recording: check the operating system’s deleted-item facilities and consult recovery guidance for your OS and storage type. No universal OBS undelete workflow is established.
