Disabling the toggle removes iCloud-held lists from that device’s view; it does not, by itself, prove that the lists were deleted. Re-enable Reminders first, confirm that the lists are present on iCloud.com, and only then consider an archived restore.
Use Apple’s Data Recovery tool when reminders or lists were actually deleted, or when you need to roll iCloud back to an earlier state. That restore affects calendars and reminders together, removes shared-list permissions, and replaces the current iCloud state with the archived version you select.

What turning off iCloud Reminders actually does
iCloud reminders are available on a device only when that device is signed in to the relevant Apple Account and the Reminders feature is enabled. Apple states that a device with Reminders turned off cannot access its iCloud reminders. Therefore, when you disable the Reminders toggle, iCloud lists can disappear from that device’s Reminders app even though the lists still exist in iCloud. This is an access and visibility problem, not automatically a deletion.

- Lists or individual reminders were deleted, or you need an earlier state: use iCloud.com Data Recovery to restore an automatically archived version.
Do not start with a restore simply because the app looks empty. A restore replaces the current iCloud calendars-and-reminders state and has consequences for shared lists.
Before you change anything
Use this short check before editing, deleting, or restoring:
- Know which Apple Account originally held the reminders.
- Have access to an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or browser where you can sign in to that same account.
- If any lists are shared, record the participants and the lists they use before an archived restore. A restore removes sharing information.
- Do not create replacement reminders in the empty view while you are deciding what happened. First establish whether the iCloud lists are simply hidden.
Step 1: Turn iCloud Reminders back on
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top to open your Apple Account settings.
- Tap iCloud.
- Tap See All (on some versions this is labeled Show All).
- Enable Reminders.
Open the Reminders app after enabling the switch and give it time to download the lists. The exact delay depends on the amount of data and the current service connection; do not assume that an initially empty screen means the data is gone.

Mac
- Open System Settings.
- Select your name to open Apple Account settings.
- Select iCloud.
- Enable Reminders.
Then open Reminders and look for the iCloud section in the sidebar. If the account is correct and the feature is enabled, iCloud lists should become available to that device.
Step 2: Confirm the account and list location
Using a different Apple Account is a common reason an apparently empty Reminders app persists after the switch is turned on. Check the account name shown in Settings on iPhone or iPad, or in System Settings on Mac, and make sure it is the same account used on your other devices.

In Reminders, expand the sidebar and select a list under the iCloud section. Do not judge recovery from a list stored in a different account or location. The iCloud section is the relevant place for lists synchronized through iCloud.
For an independent check, open iCloud.com/reminders in a browser and sign in with the same Apple Account. If the lists are visible there, the data is still in iCloud and the remaining problem is synchronization or device access. If they are absent there as well, continue with the sync checks and then evaluate an archived restore.

Step 3: Run synchronization checks before restoring
Apple recommends completing these checks before using Data Recovery. They are intended to resolve delayed updates without replacing the iCloud data set.
Install current system updates
Update iOS or iPadOS on an iPhone or iPad, and macOS on a Mac, before troubleshooting further. Apple’s Reminders synchronization guidance assumes the current software available for the device.
Check date and time
Make sure the device has the correct date and time. An incorrect clock can interfere with account synchronization and makes it harder to interpret the timing of an archived version.

Close and reopen Reminders
Quit or close the Reminders app completely, then open it again. Recheck the iCloud section rather than relying on the last list that was open.

Check iCloud service status
Review Apple’s system-status information for an iCloud incident. If the service is experiencing an outage, a missing list can be a temporary availability problem rather than a lost record.
Refresh iCloud.com
If the browser version does not show an expected update, open another iCloud app from the iCloud.com App Launcher, then return to Reminders. Apple recommends this refresh sequence for iCloud.com. If updates still do not appear, sign out of iCloud.com and sign back in with the same Apple Account.
Only after these checks should you decide whether an archived restore is necessary. Avoid making edits while you are still determining which version is authoritative.

Choose the right recovery action
| Situation | Action | What changes | Effect on shared lists | Can you reverse it? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lists disappeared after Reminders was switched off | Enable iCloud Reminders again and verify the Apple Account | Restores access and visibility on the device | Sharing is not changed by simply enabling the feature | No rollback is needed; this is a settings change |
| Reminders or lists were deleted, or an earlier state is required | Restore an archived version through Data Recovery | Replaces the current iCloud calendars-and-reminders state with the selected archive | Sharing information is removed and must be recreated | Yes. Apple documents repeating the workflow and selecting the most recent available version |
The first row is a visibility fix. The second is a rollback. Treat them as different operations even though both can make reminders appear again.
Step 4: Restore an archived version from iCloud.com
iCloud automatically archives versions that are available to Data Recovery. You can restore only versions that iCloud has archived; there is no documented way in this workflow to choose an arbitrary time that was never archived.
- Open iCloud.com/reminders and sign in to the Apple Account that contains the reminders.
- Open the App Launcher.
- Choose Data Recovery.
- Select Restore Calendars and Reminders.
- Review the archived versions and choose the required date and time.
- Start the restore and wait for iCloud to finish processing it.
The Data Recovery command is named “Restore Calendars and Reminders” because Apple handles both data types together. It is not a reminders-only replacement operation. A selected archive therefore affects calendars and reminders as a combined iCloud state.
Do not edit while the restore is running
Apple’s instruction is explicit: “Wait until iCloud finishes restoring your reminder lists before you change them.” Changes made during the process are not saved. Do not add, delete, rename, reorder, or complete reminders until the restoration has finished and the lists have reappeared on your devices.
Wait for devices to receive the restored state
After Data Recovery completes, keep iCloud Reminders enabled on each device and open Reminders to verify the restored lists. If a device remains empty, confirm that it uses the same Apple Account and repeat the synchronization checks rather than starting another restore immediately.
Best Value
Rebuild shared lists after an archived restore
Restoring an archive removes sharing information from shared reminder lists. The reminders themselves may return, but the prior participant permissions and invitations do not remain attached to the restored lists.
- Before restoring, write down each shared list and the people who had access.
- Complete the Data Recovery restore and wait for it to finish.
- Open each restored shared list and re-share it with the previous participants.
- Ask collaborators to accept the new invitations. If you previously collaborated on a list and no longer see it, ask the owner to invite you again.
Do not assume that a collaborator’s missing list proves the reminders were lost. The restore’s removal of sharing information can explain why access disappeared after the data itself returned.
If you want to undo the restore
Apple documents a way to return to the reminders and lists you were using before the rollback. Repeat the same iCloud.com sequence: open the App Launcher, choose Data Recovery, select Restore Calendars and Reminders, and choose the most recent available archived version. This is still a combined calendars-and-reminders restore, and sharing information will need to be recreated again if the second restore removes it.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The Reminders switch is on, but the iCloud section is missing
- Check that the device is signed in to the Apple Account that originally stored the lists.
- Open iCloud settings again and confirm Reminders remains enabled.
- Restart the device, open Reminders, and look for the iCloud section in the sidebar.
- Check iCloud.com/reminders with the same account. If the lists appear there, focus on device synchronization; if they do not, continue to the archive check.
The lists appear on iCloud.com but not on one device
- Verify the device’s Apple Account against the account used in the browser.
- Confirm Reminders is enabled for that device.
- Install current operating-system updates, check date and time, close and reopen Reminders, and restart the device.
- Check Apple’s service status. A service interruption can delay an otherwise correct setup.
The browser does not show a recent change
Open another iCloud app from the App Launcher and return to Reminders. If the update is still absent, sign out of iCloud.com and sign back in. Do not begin editing from multiple devices while the browser and device disagree about the current state.
Data Recovery shows no version that contains the reminders
Data Recovery is limited to versions that iCloud automatically archived. If no archived version contains the missing reminders, the documented restore workflow cannot manufacture an additional snapshot. First make certain you are signed in to the correct Apple Account and that you are using Restore Calendars and Reminders, not a different recovery category.
A restore brought back reminders but shared access is gone
This is expected behavior for an archived restore. Re-share each affected list and have collaborators accept fresh invitations. The restore removes the sharing information even when the reminder content returns.
You edited reminders during restoration
Apple warns that changes made while restoration is in progress are not saved. Wait for the process to finish, inspect the resulting lists, and then re-enter any edits that are missing. Do not rely on changes made during the restoration window.
Quick Recap
What the recovery process can and cannot do
- It can restore access: enabling Reminders for the correct Apple Account makes iCloud-held lists available to that device.
- It can restore an archived state: Data Recovery can replace the current calendars-and-reminders state with an automatically archived version selected by date and time.
- It cannot restore an unarchived moment: only versions available in iCloud Data Recovery can be selected.
- It does not preserve sharing configuration: shared-list permissions and invitations must be rebuilt after an archived restore.
- It does not save edits made during restoration: wait for completion before changing any reminder list.
A safe recovery order
- Turn on iCloud Reminders on the affected device.
- Confirm the same Apple Account is in use everywhere.
- Check the iCloud section in Reminders and verify the lists at iCloud.com/reminders.
- Complete Apple’s update, date-and-time, app restart, device restart, and service-status checks.
- Use Data Recovery only if the content is deleted or an earlier state is required.
- Do not edit until the restore finishes.
- Rebuild sharing and invitations after the restored lists are visible.
- If the selected archive was wrong, repeat Data Recovery and choose the most recent available version.
