Each has a different recovery path. Look for a Preserve Timeline, Load Previous Save, Last Inn Rest, chapter checkpoint, or another save slot first. Starting another loop, chapter, or New Game+ run can overwrite the only recoverable state, and some games make a confirmed reset permanent.
Identify exactly what happened
Do not treat every time-loop setback as the same mechanic. The wording on the screen and the moment at which progress disappeared determine what can still be restored. Write down the game, platform, mode, save slot, and the exact command or event that preceded the loss. Then match it to one of these cases.

Intentional timeline reset
A menu command such as Reset Timeline or Start Over may deliberately delete the completed timeline, the New Game+ state, or both. In Oxenfree, the Netflix Games Help Center distinguishes Preserve Timeline from Reset Timeline. Preserve Timeline keeps the original completed save; Reset Timeline wipes both the New Game Plus and original completed saves. If you confirmed the destructive option, the active slot may have no in-game undo.

Some games return you to a checkpoint after death instead of deleting the whole run. The lost section is the distance since the last checkpoint or rest. Dragon’s Dogma 2, for example, offers Load from Last Inn Rest, which reverts to save data from the previous rest at an inn or dwelling. That is a controlled rollback, not a timeline wipe.

Chapter restart
A chapter-selection feature can replace the current slot with an earlier point. Life Is Strange documents a separate save slot for restarting from a chapter; restarting in the current slot deletes progress beyond that chapter. If you chose a restart, check whether the game created or offered a separate slot before continuing.
Missing or corrupted save
If the game closes unexpectedly, shows an empty slot, or reports damaged data without displaying a reset warning, treat it as a save-availability problem. Do not launch repeated attempts that might trigger synchronization or overwrite. The game title, platform, edition, and whether cloud or cross-progression is enabled determine which backups, if any, are available.
Immediate recovery procedure
Use this order because each step minimizes additional writes to the affected slot.
- Stop writing to the slot. Quit to the title screen without starting another loop, chapter, New Game+, or new game. Final Fantasy XIV warns that commencing a new New Game+ chapter deletes data currently in progress, and exiting New Game+ wipes in-progress data. Do not assume a harmless-looking Continue button is harmless.
- Read every option and warning. Capture the exact wording before selecting anything. A label that says Preserve, Load, Previous, or Separate Slot is materially safer than Reset, Start Over, Replace, or Confirm. In Oxenfree, the distinction between Preserve Timeline and Reset Timeline determines whether the original completed save survives.
- Choose the least destructive restore point. Prefer a prior checkpoint or rest over a full timeline reset. In Dragon’s Dogma 2, choose Load from Last Inn Rest when the loss followed a death; it returns to the previous inn or dwelling save.
- Inspect alternate slots and chapter saves. Open Load Game rather than immediately choosing Continue. Look for a second slot, an autosave made before the reset, or a chapter checkpoint. Life Is Strange specifically uses a separate slot for chapter restarts, while restarting in the current slot removes progress after that chapter.
- Check the game’s persistence rules. A New Game+ mode may preserve character data while changing the world, or it may preserve almost nothing. Confirm what the title says about inventory, abilities, story flags, and completed saves before you continue.
- Pause synchronization before experimenting, if the platform allows it. If a local save is present but a cloud copy may be newer, avoid repeatedly launching and closing the game while both copies are being reconciled. Record timestamps and choose deliberately between local and cloud versions using the platform’s own save-management screen. Names and controls differ by platform, so do not delete either copy until you know which one contains the needed progress.
- Make a copy of any surviving save data. Use the platform’s supported backup or export function. Challenge modes can disable manual saves, cloud synchronization, or cross-progression, so the absence of a backup may be an intentional rule rather than a technical failure.
- Stop when the game confirms a wipe. If the warning says both timelines are deleted, or the only slot has already been overwritten, an in-game restore may not exist. Further play will not recreate the deleted state.

Intentional timeline resets: the Oxenfree warning
Oxenfree provides the clearest example of why the exact label matters. The Netflix Games Help Center states that Preserve Timeline keeps the original completed save, whereas Reset Timeline wipes both the New Game Plus and original completed saves. Those are not two names for the same restart; they are different data-destruction policies.

If you are still at the confirmation screen, back out and select Preserve Timeline if your goal is to replay without sacrificing the completed run. If you already selected Reset Timeline, return to the title screen and inspect every save entry before beginning another loop. Do not create a replacement save in the same slot while looking for an older one. If no older entry exists and the game has confirmed that both saves were wiped, recovery through the game’s menus is unlikely.
Deaths, inns, and checkpoint saves
A death rollback is recoverable only to the save point the game names. In Dragon’s Dogma 2, Load from Last Inn Rest reverts to the previous rest at an inn or dwelling. Select that option instead of accepting a newer automatic state if the newer state is the one you want to undo.
Expect everything after that rest to disappear: exploration, item use, quests advanced, and other actions are measured from the checkpoint. The option restores the save record; it does not reconstruct an arbitrary moment immediately before death. If the game offers several checkpoint types, read the timestamp or location and choose the newest point that predates the unwanted change.

Use a separate slot whenever the interface provides one. If you have already restarted in the current slot, leave the game before finishing or saving the chapter again. Check the Load menu for an untouched slot or an autosave from before the restart. Once the current slot has been replaced and no alternate copy exists, later chapters cannot be regenerated from the earlier chapter alone.
New Game+ carry-over: verify each category
There is no universal New Game+ rule. A title may carry equipment and abilities while resetting the world, preserve character data while replaying a story chapter, or wipe both the completed and replay saves. Check each category separately rather than relying on the phrase New Game+.

Inventory and equipment
Inventory persistence means the items are attached to the continuing character record, not necessarily that every quest or map change survives. Assassin’s Creed Origins explicitly includes inventory, gear, weapons, abilities, and hidden-blade crafting status in its New Game+ carry-over.

Character data and world state
Final Fantasy XIV keeps character data while replaying a story chapter in a changed world state. That distinction matters: the same character can enter the replay with established data even though the chapter’s narrative environment is being reconstructed.

Story flags and knowledge
Unless a game lists story flags, discovered information, or relationship outcomes as persistent, treat them as uncertain. A loop may preserve the player’s knowledge conceptually while resetting the save’s formal flags. Use the title’s own carry-over list, not assumptions from another time-loop RPG.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage Full Synchronization is a special case. Ubisoft Help says that dying while Full Synchronization is active resets progress to the end of Assassin training at Alamut. The same support information says that cross-progression, cloud-save synchronization, and manual saves are disabled for that save.
That combination changes the recovery plan. There may be no alternate cloud copy to download, no manual checkpoint to restore, and no cross-platform state to retrieve. Before entering a one-life or full-synchronization challenge, verify whether the mode disables every backup route. After a death, use the designated restart point and do not expect ordinary save-management steps to bypass the rule.
When a save appears missing or corrupted
First distinguish a hidden save from a deleted one. Return to the title screen, open the full Load menu, and check every profile, slot, chapter, and mode listed by the game. A Continue button can point to a newer or different slot than the one you need.
- Record the slot name, timestamp, chapter, and platform account before changing anything.
- Check whether the game has separate local and cloud entries, and avoid accepting an automatic overwrite without comparing dates.
- Look for a supported backup or export option; do not alter files through unsupported tools if the platform does not document that process.
- Confirm that you are using the same edition, profile, and account that created the save.
- If the game reports corruption and offers a repair or replacement, preserve the original copy first when the platform allows it.
These checks cannot restore data that the game has already overwritten. They only prevent a second loss while you determine which copy, if any, remains.
Common mistakes that make recovery impossible
Starting another loop to test the reset
A new loop may write over the slot that still contained the pre-reset state. Keep the game at the title screen until you have inspected all restore options.
Confusing Preserve with Reset
In Oxenfree, the two commands have opposite outcomes. Read the warning text instead of selecting the familiar-looking option.

Assuming New Game+ is a backup
New Game+ is a ruleset, not automatically an archive. Final Fantasy XIV can delete in-progress chapter data when you begin another New Game+ chapter or exit New Game+. A replay mode may preserve character data while discarding the current chapter.
Expecting cloud recovery in a challenge mode
Assassin’s Creed Mirage Full Synchronization disables cloud synchronization, cross-progression, and manual saves for that save. A cloud-download strategy cannot work when the mode has intentionally disabled cloud storage.
A practical decision tree
- Did you confirm a command labeled Reset Timeline or Start Over? If no, continue to the next question. If yes, look for a preserved original or alternate slot immediately; if the warning says both timelines were wiped, assume the active slot is unrecoverable.
- Did the loss happen immediately after death? Open the game’s named checkpoint or rest option. For Dragon’s Dogma 2, that is Load from Last Inn Rest.
- Did you select an earlier chapter? Check for a separate restart slot. In Life Is Strange, restarting in the current slot removes later progress.
- Did you start or exit New Game+? Read the title’s warning before doing anything else. Final Fantasy XIV deletes in-progress New Game+ chapter data when a new chapter is commenced or New Game+ is exited.
- Is this a no-backup challenge mode? Check whether manual, cloud, and cross-progression saves are disabled. Assassin’s Creed Mirage Full Synchronization has all three restrictions.
- Is the slot absent or marked corrupted? Stop launching the game repeatedly, inspect local and cloud entries without overwriting, and use only supported restore or backup tools.
Preventing the next timeline loss
- Keep an untouched completion slot before experimenting with Reset Timeline or New Game+.
- Use a separate slot for chapter replays whenever the game offers one.
- Read the persistence list for inventory, abilities, character data, story flags, and world state separately.
- Record the last safe inn, dwelling, or checkpoint before attempting a difficult loop.
- Learn whether the mode permits manual saves, cloud synchronization, or cross-progression before investing time.
- After a reset, verify the Load menu rather than trusting Continue.
- Do not start another chapter or loop until you know whether the current one is preserved, replaced, or deliberately disposable.
What you should expect in the end
Recovery is possible when the game retained a checkpoint, an alternate slot, a preserved timeline, or an unoverwritten local or cloud copy. It is not guaranteed after a confirmed destructive reset. The safest response is therefore procedural: stop writing, identify the exact reset label, select the least destructive restore point, verify what persists, and respect any mode that explicitly disables backups. Time-loop mechanics are deliberately different from game to game; the title’s warning text and save rules outrank assumptions imported from another RPG.
