Stop using the SD card immediately. Do not take more photos, copy files to it, format it again, or save recovered files back onto it. New writes can overwrite data that recovery software might still read.
If the card is detected and files were deleted, try TestDisk first because its filesystem-aware undelete can sometimes retain names and folders. If the filesystem is corrupted, the card was reformatted, or TestDisk cannot find the files, use PhotoRec to carve file contents from the entire partition. Recovery is possible only while the old data remains unoverwritten, so neither tool can guarantee that every file will return.

What to do in the first few minutes
- Stop all writes. Remove the card from the camera, phone, or computer. Do not “repair” it by formatting, and do not let a camera continue recording.
- Do not save recovered files to the card. Prepare a different physical drive or, at minimum, a different filesystem as the destination.
- Record what happened. Note whether files were deleted, the card was quick-formatted, the filesystem became corrupted, or the card is no longer detected. This determines which recovery path is safest.
- Avoid repeated reconnects if the card is failing. A card that disconnects, becomes unusually hot, or is physically cracked may need professional recovery rather than more software attempts.
CGSecurity warns that writing to the filesystem can overwrite deleted data. Recovering to another destination protects the remaining data from the recovery process itself.
Can a formatted or corrupted SD card still contain files?
Sometimes. A quick format generally removes filesystem references to files without immediately erasing every underlying data block. The SD Association’s formatter manual describes this as a situation in which file data may remain and could be retrieved with recovery software. “May” is important: a quick format is not reversible in every case, and continued use can replace the old blocks.

Corruption is different from ordinary deletion. The directory or allocation information may be damaged even though portions of the file contents remain. A filesystem-aware tool may recover entries when that metadata is intact; a carving tool may find recognizable file contents when the metadata is not usable.
The decisive condition is overwriting. Once new photographs, videos, downloads, or formatting activity reuse the blocks that held a lost file, software cannot reconstruct the overwritten bytes. The available documentation provides no universal success percentage for SD-card recovery, so treat every result as uncertain rather than assuming a scan will restore everything.
Choose the right recovery path
| Situation | Best first option | What it can preserve or find | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| The card is detected, files were deleted, and the filesystem is readable | TestDisk 7.2 undelete | Filesystem entries, and sometimes original filenames and directory structure | Works only when the filesystem and file data meet TestDisk’s supported conditions and have not been overwritten |
| The filesystem is corrupted, the card was reformatted, or TestDisk finds nothing | PhotoRec whole-partition scan | Recognized file contents using signature-based carving | Original filenames and folders are not restored; results require sorting and inspection |
| The card is not reliably detected, has visible physical damage, or holds irreplaceable data | Stop software attempts and seek a professional recovery service | A specialist may use hardware-level techniques unavailable to desktop software | No provider, price, or success rate is established here; do not assume professional recovery is guaranteed |
TestDisk’s undelete feature supports FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, and ext2 under the conditions described in its documentation. PhotoRec supports memory cards, including Secure Digital cards, and is intended for cases where the filesystem structure is damaged or unusable. Both tools are free and open-source projects from CGSecurity.

Use a separate destination
Check the size of the files you hope to recover and make sure another drive has at least that much free space. An external drive is useful when the computer’s internal storage is too small, but you do not need to purchase one if suitable storage is already available. Never choose the affected SD card as the output location.
Connect the card reliably
Use the computer’s built-in reader if it recognizes the card consistently. If the computer cannot access a phone’s memory card directly, CGSecurity’s FAQ recommends using a USB card reader. A reader cannot fix a physically failing card; it only provides another interface.

Confirm the software version
The principal procedural documentation is for CGSecurity TestDisk 7.2, whose project overview lists February 22, 2024. Interface wording can change, so read the prompts shown by the current release you download from CGSecurity. Do not use the SD Association formatter on the affected card: Formatter 5.0.4 for Windows and 5.0.3 for Mac were the versions identified when indexed, and that utility is for preparing cards for future use, not recovering files.
Recover deleted files with TestDisk
Use this route when the card appears in the operating system, the loss looks like deletion, and the filesystem is still readable. TestDisk works from a text interface; use the keyboard selections shown on screen and avoid any option that writes a new partition structure unless you have independently confirmed that is necessary.
- Launch TestDisk with the card connected. If the program asks whether to create a log, choosing the default log option is generally safe; the log is written to the computer, not the SD card.
- Select the physical SD card. Identify it by its capacity and connection, not just by a drive letter. Selecting the wrong disk can expose unrelated data to the operation.
- Accept the detected partition-table type. TestDisk normally proposes a type based on the disk. If the card’s partition information is unclear, do not guess repeatedly; stop and reassess the disk identity.
- Open the partition menu and choose the relevant partition. Select Advanced and then the partition that contains the missing files.
- Choose Undelete. This option is available for supported filesystems such as FAT, exFAT, NTFS, and ext2. If no undelete option is offered, the filesystem may not be supported in its current state; PhotoRec is the next route.
- Review the file list. TestDisk may show deleted entries when filesystem metadata is still available. Use the on-screen navigation to mark individual files or directories, or select all appropriate entries.
- Copy to the other drive. Use the copy command shown by TestDisk and browse to the prepared destination on a different disk or filesystem. Confirm the destination before starting.
- Wait for the copy to finish, then open copies from the destination. Do not edit, rename, or move the originals on the SD card while the operation is running.
TestDisk has the best chance of retaining original names and folders when the directory metadata survived. It cannot restore blocks that have already been overwritten, and an apparently complete directory listing does not prove that every file is intact.
Use PhotoRec when the filesystem is corrupted or reformatted
PhotoRec scans a partition or whole storage device for known file signatures. This makes it useful when a directory cannot be read, a card was reformatted, or TestDisk’s undelete cannot locate the files. It reconstructs file contents rather than the original filesystem organization.
- Start PhotoRec with the SD card attached. Select the physical card by matching its capacity. Be careful not to select the destination drive.
- Select the partition to scan. If the partition information is clearly present, scan that partition. When corruption prevents a reliable partition choice, the whole-device option can be appropriate, but it takes longer and may produce more unrelated results.
- Choose the filesystem family requested by the program. For most camera and removable-card formats, select the non-ext2/ext3/ext4 option; use the ext2 option only when the card actually used that filesystem.
- Limit file types when you can. PhotoRec’s file-options screen lets you select formats. Keeping only the camera formats you need can reduce noise and destination-space use. Do not disable a format unless you know the missing files use another type.
- Choose the scan range. Scanning unallocated space targets deleted data on a normally structured partition. Scanning the whole partition is more appropriate after corruption or formatting, but it can find more unrelated fragments.
- Select a destination on another drive. Navigate to the external or internal destination prepared earlier and confirm it. PhotoRec warns against saving to the source card; follow that warning.
- Let the scan complete. The program writes recovered items into destination folders as it works. Leave the card connected and avoid sleep or cable interruptions.
- Inspect and organize the results. PhotoRec generally uses generated names and numbered folders instead of the original directory tree. Sort by extension, size, and capture date where available, then open representative files from each group.
PhotoRec can recover recognizable content even when the filesystem is damaged, but it does not restore original filenames or folder structure. A successful scan therefore produces a collection that still needs manual review.

What to expect from recovered photos and videos
Photos and documents
Common image and document formats may be recognized by their signatures. A file that appears in the output can still be incomplete, so open a sample from each batch and check dimensions, page count, or other application-specific indicators before deleting anything else.
Recommended Free Tools
Camera-recorded video
Video is more difficult when recording created fragmented files. CGSecurity notes that recovery tools, including PhotoRec, expect non-fragmented files. The scan may therefore return an unreadable video or separate fragments even when some data was found. Do not treat the presence of a video filename or a large recovered file as proof that it will play.
Names, dates, and folders
TestDisk can preserve names and structure when filesystem metadata remains available. PhotoRec’s carving process cannot reconstruct that organization, so use the recovered file’s embedded metadata, filesystem timestamps copied by the tool, and careful visual inspection to rebuild folders on the destination.
Scenario-specific decisions
You accidentally deleted files
Stop immediately, keep the card mounted only long enough to identify it, and try TestDisk’s undelete path. Do not take a “test” photo: even one new file can reuse blocks needed by a deleted image.
You performed a quick format
Do not format again. Because a quick format may leave underlying data, move directly to a PhotoRec scan if the new filesystem has no useful directory entries. TestDisk is worth trying first only when the old filesystem or deleted entries are still visible and the tool can identify the relevant partition.

The card reports that it needs to be formatted
Cancel the format prompt. A format would write new filesystem information and could reduce recoverability. If the card is consistently detected, try PhotoRec; if detection is intermittent, stop and consider specialist help.
The computer cannot see the card
Try one known-good reader and another USB port without repeatedly reconnecting a failing card. If the card never appears as a stable device, software cannot scan its sectors. A physically damaged or intermittently detected card, especially one containing irreplaceable data, is a case for professional recovery rather than repeated consumer scans.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common recovery problems
The destination fills up
Stop the scan, preserve the output already written, and free space on a different drive. Narrow PhotoRec’s file-type selection and scan only the relevant partition when that is technically appropriate. Never redirect output to the source SD card.
TestDisk shows no deleted files
That can mean the directory metadata was damaged, the filesystem is unsupported in its current state, or the blocks were overwritten. Do not repeatedly run write-oriented repairs. Switch to PhotoRec for a content scan while the card remains untouched.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPhotoRec returns thousands of irrelevant files
Carving finds any recognized signature in the scanned area, including older material and fragments. Use file-type filters, scan the most relevant partition, and sort the output by extension and size. Keep the raw output until you have verified the organized copies.

Recovered files will not open
Try another application capable of the same format and compare several files from the same batch. If every copy is truncated or corrupted, the underlying blocks may have been overwritten or the file may have been fragmented. Recovery software cannot recreate bytes that are no longer present.
The card disconnects during a scan
Do not keep restarting the scan indefinitely. Disconnect the card safely, avoid further writes, and decide whether the data justifies professional recovery. Repeated power cycling can make a deteriorating card less predictable.
Verify and preserve what you recovered
- Work only from the destination copies, never from the source card.
- Open representative images, documents, and videos from every output folder.
- For important files, make a second backup on another storage device before attempting renaming or conversion.
- Keep the original recovered output untouched until you have verified the organized copy.
- Record which files are complete, partially recovered, or unreadable so you do not mistake a placeholder or fragment for a usable original.
Once the files are safely duplicated elsewhere, you can decide whether the SD card is trustworthy. A card that caused corruption should not return to critical recording without testing and, when appropriate, replacement.

Escalate instead of experimenting when the card is physically cracked, its contacts are damaged, it becomes hot, it repeatedly disappears, or the data is irreplaceable. Do not run filesystem repair, reformatting, or multiple recovery programs against a failing card. A professional service may have specialized hardware and controlled imaging procedures, but outcomes, prices, and success rates vary and are not guaranteed. Tell the provider exactly what happened and confirm that no further writes will be made to the card.
After recovery: making the card usable again
Only reformat after you have verified that the needed files exist in at least one other location. The SD Association formatter is designed to prepare cards for future use, not to recover data from the affected card. Check the current formatter release for your operating system, choose the correct card by capacity, and understand that formatting will erase the card’s existing filesystem contents. If corruption returns, retire the card rather than trusting it with the only copy of important photos.
