How to Recover Deleted Photos and Video Files Without Overwriting Them

Stop writing to the affected storage first. Then check the device or app’s Recently Deleted/Trash area and any backup before attempting a recovery scan. If no usable copy exists, recover from local storage with the source left untouched and save every result to a different drive. This order gives reversible options priority and limits the chance that new data replaces deleted photo or video data.

What to do first when photos or videos disappear

Deletion does not always mean immediate physical erasure. On many storage devices, the system marks the space as available for reuse. New photos, downloads, software installations, updates, temporary files and even normal background activity can then occupy that space. Once new data has replaced the old content, recovery may be incomplete or impossible.

Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance puts the preservation rule plainly: “If you want to increase your chances of recovering a file, minimize or avoid using your computer.” That instruction is specific to Windows, but the same conservative approach is sensible for a camera card or other removable storage: stop recording to it, do not format it and do not copy new material onto it.

  1. Stop taking photos, recording video or transferring files to the affected card, phone or drive.
  2. On a computer, close programs that may download, synchronize or create large temporary files. Do not install recovery software on the drive that contains the missing files if another destination is available.
  3. Do not accept a format prompt for a card or drive containing the missing media. Cancel it and preserve the original storage.
  4. Use another drive for any recovered output. A recovery program must not write its results back to the source.

This is a risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee. The chances depend on whether the deleted space has already been reused and on the storage system involved. The official material cited here does not establish a universal success rate for phones, SSDs, cameras or every Android manufacturer.

Check built-in recovery locations before scanning

Google Photos: inspect Archive and Trash

Open the Google Photos account and device that normally held the media. Check both Archive and Trash; an item may have been hidden rather than deleted. Google Photos Help states that an item can be restored while it remains in Trash and has not been permanently deleted. The documented Trash retention period is 30 days under the current policy checked October 11, 2026. That is a Google Photos rule, not a general 30-day standard for every photo app or cloud service.

If the item is still in Trash, use the service’s restore action and then confirm that it appears in the expected album or device gallery. Do not empty Trash while investigating. If the item is absent after the documented retention period, the built-in restore path no longer applies and you must move to a pre-existing backup or a local-storage investigation where one exists.

Apple Photos: look for the Recovered album

On devices running iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia 15.1 or visionOS 2.4, open Photos and look under Utilities > Recovered. Apple’s support guidance, published September 30, 2025, says this album appears only when the device identifies photos or videos that are still stored on the device but are not currently part of the Photos library.

Review the thumbnails and metadata before choosing to restore anything. Recovered media may be outside the normal library index rather than permanently erased. If the Recovered album does not appear, that means the device did not identify qualifying items at that time; it does not prove that every deleted file is unrecoverable.

Check the gallery or app that performed the deletion

Use the exact gallery, file manager or editing app from which the files were removed. Many applications provide their own Recently Deleted, Bin or Trash area, and those areas can be separate from a cloud photo service. Verify the account currently signed in and check any alternate device that may have held an unsynchronized copy.

Be careful when making additional changes in a synchronized library. Google Photos warns that deleting an item can remove copies from the device and from other synchronized devices. A command that looks like “delete from this app” may therefore affect more than one local copy. Before deleting, emptying Trash or turning synchronization back on, inspect the account’s backup and sync status.

Look for backups that existed before deletion

Windows Backup and OneDrive copies

Check Windows Backup and any OneDrive folders that were configured to protect the Pictures or Videos folders. A cloud or backup copy helps only if it was created before the deletion and has not itself been removed or synchronized away. If a backup service shows version history, choose a version dated before the files disappeared and restore it to a separate folder first so you can compare it with the current library.

File History

Microsoft describes File History as keeping copies of personal files, including photos and videos, on an external drive or network location when it has been configured in advance. Browse the available historical versions and restore only the needed files. If the original folder is still being synchronized or edited, restoring to another folder gives you a chance to verify filenames, dates and file sizes before replacing anything.

If File History was never enabled, or its destination was disconnected and no usable version predates the deletion, it cannot create a missing backup after the fact. Move on without repeatedly changing backup settings on the affected computer.

When local recovery is necessary

Windows File Recovery is Microsoft’s command-line utility for attempting to recover deleted files from supported local storage when Recycle Bin and backups do not help. It can target local internal drives, external drives and USB storage. It does not recover files that exist only in cloud storage or on a network file share.

The source and destination must be different drives. If the deleted files were on C:, recovered output cannot be written to C:; use another physical drive such as E:. For an SD card mounted as F:, choose a separate destination drive. An external USB drive can serve as that destination if you do not already have another suitable drive; it is storage for the results, not recovery software or a special recovery device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the source and destination

  1. Identify the drive letter for the storage containing the deleted media without opening or copying large folders from it.
  2. Connect a destination drive with enough free space for the recovered results. Confirm that its drive letter is different from the source.
  3. If the source is an SD card and the computer has no compatible slot, use a card reader. The reader only provides access to the card; it does not improve the underlying recovery odds.
  4. Install or run the recovery utility in a way that avoids writing to the source. Keep the card, phone storage or original drive unchanged while you work.

Use a narrow search first

For a Windows drive, a targeted command can limit the search to common photo and video extensions. Replace the drive letters and account name with your own values; the angle-bracketed name is a variable and is not typed literally.

winfr C: E: /regular /n Users<username>Pictures*.jpg /n Users<username>Pictures*.jpeg /n Users<username>Videos*.mp4

The source is C: and the destination is E:. Add other extensions that match the missing material, such as *.png, *.mov or *.heic, when appropriate. A narrower search can make the result set easier to inspect, but it cannot recover data that has already been overwritten.

Search an SD card or other removable media

Microsoft’s examples include JPEG and PNG recovery and note SD cards using FAT or exFAT file systems. For a card mounted as F: and a separate destination at E:, an extensive search pattern can include the relevant extensions:

winfr F: E: /extensive /n *.jpg /n *.jpeg /n *.png /n *.mp4 /n *.mov

Use the file types that were actually recorded by the camera or phone. A camera may use a different video extension or a vendor-specific still-image format. If the command reports that no files can be recovered, do not respond by formatting the card or repeatedly recording to it; those actions add writes to the source.

Inspect the output on the destination drive

Windows File Recovery places results in a recovery folder on the destination. Work from that copy, not from the source card or drive. Sort by extension and size, open representative files and check whether the image dimensions, playback length and capture dates are intact. Recovery can produce files with generic names, incomplete content or duplicates, so verify before reorganizing.

If the recovered files are important and only partially usable, stop experimenting on the original storage. Further attempts can change what remains recoverable. The official Windows documentation describes an attempt, not a promise that every deleted file will return.

How to avoid overwriting recovered data

Keep source and destination physically separate

A different drive letter is necessary, but think in physical terms: the source card or disk should remain the untouched read source, while another disk receives the output. Do not point the destination at a folder on the same disk merely because it has a different path. This is why Windows File Recovery requires different source and destination drives.

Do not restore over the original folder immediately

Even after a successful recovery, keep the results in a new folder on the destination drive. Confirm that the files open correctly and that the recovered set is complete enough for your needs. Only then should you copy selected files into a normal photo library. This staging step prevents an uncertain result from replacing the remaining evidence on the source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate recovery from synchronization

Pause automatic import and synchronization while you examine recovered files. A synchronization tool can propagate deletions or move a newly restored file into an unexpected location. Once you have a verified copy, resume synchronization deliberately and confirm which folder is treated as authoritative.

Understand what “deleted” means in each situation

Deleted from an app

The app may have moved the item to its own Trash or Recently Deleted area. Restoration is usually the safest path because it does not require reading free space on the storage device. Check the app’s retention rule before assuming the item is gone.

Deleted from the device

A gallery or file manager may remove the visible entry while leaving recoverable content in storage. Stop using the device or card and avoid installing a recovery tool onto the same storage. For phones, the official sources used here do not establish one universal procedure across manufacturers, encryption settings or storage types; use the device maker’s documented recovery and backup options where available.

Deleted from a synchronized library

One deletion can affect cloud data, the local device and other synchronized devices. Google Photos specifically warns about this propagation. Check the account’s Trash, backup status and other signed-in devices before making another deletion or emptying a bin. If every synchronized copy was permanently removed, a local scan may not apply because the remaining data may exist only in the cloud—or may no longer exist anywhere accessible.

Troubleshooting common failure points

The item is not in Trash or Recently Deleted

Check the correct account, Archive and any separate device gallery. Confirm the service’s retention period and whether Trash was emptied. Then check backups that predate the deletion. Do not assume that an absent thumbnail proves the physical storage has been overwritten, but do not continue ordinary use of the source while deciding what to do.

The computer says the source and destination are the same

Choose another physical drive and rerun the command with its drive letter. A second folder or partition on the same physical disk does not provide the separation required by Windows File Recovery. If no other drive is available, stop and obtain suitable destination storage before attempting recovery.

The file was cloud-only

Windows File Recovery cannot scan cloud storage or network shares. Use the cloud service’s Trash, version history or backup controls instead. Download any restored cloud copy to a local folder only after the service confirms that the item has been restored.

The card requests formatting

Cancel the format prompt. Formatting writes filesystem information and can make later recovery harder. Preserve the card, use a compatible reader if necessary and direct any recovery output to a separate drive.

Recovered files are corrupted or have generic names

Try opening several files of different sizes and formats from the destination. A playable video or correctly dimensioned image is stronger evidence of a usable recovery than a filename alone. Do not repeatedly run experiments that write to the source. If the media is irreplaceable and the official utility does not produce usable files, stop before taking actions that alter the original storage; the available official guidance does not provide a universal professional-service procedure or a guaranteed outcome.

Platform limits and expectations

  • Google Photos’ 30-day Trash period applies to the documented Google Photos conditions checked October 11, 2026, not to every service.
  • Apple’s Recovered album is documented for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia 15.1 and visionOS 2.4, and only appears when eligible media remains on the device outside the library.
  • Windows File Recovery is for supported local internal, external and USB storage. It is not a cloud-storage or network-share recovery tool.
  • A separate destination drive is mandatory for the Windows workflow; never save recovered output to the source card or disk.
  • No official source cited here supplies a universal recovery-success percentage for all phones, SD cards, SSDs, cameras or encrypted devices.

The practical decision is therefore straightforward: use a reversible built-in restore or an older backup whenever one exists; otherwise preserve the source, use a separate destination and treat local recovery as an attempt whose success depends on what remains on the storage.
