If the file is present but its contents were overwritten or encrypted, use file History instead. When nothing appears, verify the Yandex account, search all folders and Trash, and inspect activity history for a move or deletion. Once Trash has been emptied or Yandex has automatically removed the item, Yandex says the server copy cannot be recovered.
Use the right recovery path first
“Missing” files in Yandex Disk usually fall into four different cases. The correct check depends on what happened, not simply on when you last saw the file.

Do not begin by installing undelete software or buying a hard drive. Such tools cannot access Yandex’s server-side Trash or version history. A local disk is useful for keeping a copy after recovery, but it cannot retrieve a file that Yandex has permanently deleted.
1. Confirm the account, location, and activity
Check that you are signed in to the intended Yandex account
If you use separate personal, work, or family Yandex accounts, a correct-looking Disk window may still be the wrong account. Open the account menu and compare the signed-in address with the address that originally owned or received the file. Also check whether you are viewing a shared folder through an account that has only member access.

A computer sync folder can be misleading: it reflects the account configured in the desktop application, which may differ from the account open in your browser or phone. Confirm the account in the desktop app before assuming cloud data has disappeared.
Search by more than the exact filename
Use Disk search with the filename, a distinctive part of the name, the extension, or text that appears inside a document. Search from the top level rather than from one folder, then inspect similarly named folders and recently used locations. A file that was moved still appears in search because it remains on the server.
- Try the original extension, such as
.docx,.pdf, or.jpg. - Search a distinctive word from the document’s contents when the filename may have changed.
- Look for a containing folder that was renamed or moved.
- Check both the normal file list and Trash; search results in one view do not necessarily represent the other.
Read Activity history for a move or deletion
Open Disk’s activity history and look for events around the last time the file was visible. The history can show that an item was moved, renamed, or deleted and may identify the account member who performed the action. This is often the fastest way to distinguish a missing file from a deleted one.

If it shows a move, open the destination folder shown in the event and verify the item there before changing anything.
2. Restore a deleted file from Trash
Web interface
- Sign in to the Yandex account that owns the item and open Yandex Disk.
- Open Trash in the Disk navigation.
- Select the file or folder. You can select multiple items when they belong to the same recovery operation.
- Click Restore and wait for the operation to finish.
- Open the original folder, or use Search, to confirm that the item and its contents are present.
Restoring a folder restores the folder and the items still inside it. If a same-named folder now occupies the original location, check the result carefully and move the restored item to a clearly named folder if necessary.
Mobile app
The Yandex Disk mobile app also permits restoration while an item remains in Trash. Open the app’s Trash, select the file or folder, and choose the restore command shown by the current app version. The exact placement of labels can vary between iOS and Android releases, so confirm that the item leaves Trash before closing the app.

Understand the 30-day limit
Yandex’s current customer guidance says deleted items are automatically removed from Trash after 30 days, described in some help text as about a month. Manually emptying Trash removes its contents immediately. A file can therefore be recoverable one day and permanently unavailable the next, even if no one performs another action.

3. Recover an older version of an existing file
Trash is not the right place when the filename still exists but the contents are wrong. This happens after an accidental save, a bad edit, or malware encrypting a file in place. Use the file’s version history before downloading or replacing anything.
Open History or Changelog
- Open the file in Yandex Disk’s web interface.
- Open the file’s menu and choose History or Changelog, depending on the current label.
- Review the dated versions and identify the last version with the correct contents.
- Choose the option to replace the current file, or save the selected version as a copy if you need to preserve both.
- Open the restored version and verify the contents before deleting or renaming anything.
Saving an older version as a copy is safer when you are not certain which edit is correct. It gives you a separate file to compare without destroying the current version.
Know the history windows
Yandex’s customer help guidance gives accounts without an active Yandex 360 plan 14 days of file-version history and accounts with an active plan 90 days. These are retention windows for earlier versions, not guarantees that every historical save will be displayed indefinitely. For a shared folder, the owner’s plan determines the applicable history period.
Yandex says previous versions do not consume Disk space. That means deleting an older version to create storage capacity is generally unnecessary; retain the version you need while you verify the recovery.

If the file was encrypted in place and History contains no earlier unencrypted version, Yandex’s troubleshooting guidance says restoration through that path is impossible. A file that remains visible is not necessarily recoverable: the required earlier content must still exist in the history window.
4. Handle shared-folder deletions correctly
Shared folders have different deletion behavior because more than one account can edit their contents. An editor can delete a file even when that editor is not the folder owner.
Check both relevant Trash locations
Yandex states that a deletion in a shared folder moves the item to the deleter’s Trash and the folder owner’s Trash, while the item is permanently deleted for other members. Ask the owner and the person who performed the deletion to check their Trash views. The owner may be able to restore the file even when another member cannot see it in Trash.

Use shared-folder history
Shared-folder history records member changes as well as file changes. Open the file’s History/Changelog and check whether an earlier version exists. The owner’s plan controls the 14-day or 90-day customer history period, so a member’s personal plan does not extend the owner’s retention window.
Coordinate before restoring
Tell other members what you are restoring and where it will appear. Restoring a folder or an older version can reintroduce content that someone intentionally removed. If several people edited the file, save the older version as a copy first, then compare it with the current version before replacing the shared item.
5. Respond to suspected malware or ransomware
When many files suddenly have unfamiliar extensions, unreadable contents, or identical ransom notes, treat the computer as potentially compromised. Do not allow the sync client to upload more changed files while you investigate.

- Pause syncing or disconnect the affected computer from the network so additional encrypted changes are not propagated.
- Scan the computer with reputable antivirus or anti-malware tools, following Yandex’s troubleshooting sequence. These tools identify and remove malware; they are not Yandex Disk recovery utilities.
- Change the Yandex ID password from a device you trust, then review account security and active sessions.
- Check Disk Trash for originals that may have been deleted during the incident.
- For files that remain in place but are encrypted, open History and look for an earlier version.
- After cleaning the computer, re-enable syncing only when you are confident the client will not upload further encrypted files.
If History has no older version, Yandex says the encrypted file cannot be restored through that method. Do not assume that an antivirus scan will reconstruct cloud data; its role is to stop the cause and secure the account.
6. Download a local copy after recovery
Recover the item in Disk first, then create a local copy. Downloading before restoration can produce an incomplete result or simply confirm that the wrong version is still present.
Small numbers of files
- Open the restored file or folder in the web interface.
- Select the item and choose Download.
- Save it to a clearly named local folder, preferably with the recovery date and original location in the name.
- Open the downloaded files and verify their size, format, and contents.
Large folders
Yandex documents the desktop application as the option for downloading large folders that exceed web-interface limits. Let synchronization complete, then copy the files from the local Yandex Disk folder to a separate backup location. Keeping the copy outside the sync folder prevents a later cloud deletion from automatically removing your only local copy.
- Use a second physical drive or another independent backup destination.
- Keep at least one copy disconnected from the computer when it is not being used.
- Open representative files from each recovered folder instead of checking only filenames.
- For important data, record the account, folder path, and recovery date.
A local copy protects against future account or sync mistakes, but it does not change Yandex’s server-side retention rules and cannot recover an item already permanently removed from Trash.
What to do when the file still cannot be found
It was deleted more than 30 days ago
Check Activity history and every relevant account once more to rule out a move or account mix-up. If the item is absent from Trash because the 30-day period ended, Yandex’s published guidance does not provide a server recovery route.
Trash was emptied manually
Emptying Trash is a permanent deletion on Yandex’s servers. Search, Activity history, and the desktop sync folder may document that the file existed, but they do not recreate its server copy. Look for an independent local backup, an exported copy, or a copy held by a shared-folder member.
The file was overwritten outside the history window
If the current file exists but the desired content is older than the available 14-day or 90-day history period, Yandex cannot use History to restore it. Check local backups and copies sent to other people, while preserving the current file so that further edits do not destroy useful evidence.
The wrong account owns the file
Sign out and test each Yandex account you use. Shared links can also open an item owned by another account; the link recipient may not have permission to restore it. Ask the owner to perform the Trash or History recovery.
The sync folder is empty or out of date
Do not delete and reinstall the sync application as a first response. Verify the configured account, network connection, local sync status, and available disk space. The web interface is the authority for whether the item exists in the cloud; once it is confirmed there, allow the desktop client to synchronize before copying files elsewhere.

Recovery checklist
- Confirm the Yandex account and the shared-folder ownership.
- Search all Disk folders by filename, extension, and distinctive document text.
- Inspect Activity history for moves, renames, and deletions.
- Open Trash immediately and restore the item before the 30-day limit expires.
- For changed or encrypted content, open History/Changelog and select an earlier version within the 14-day or 90-day window.
- For shared folders, have both the deleter and owner check their Trash and use the owner’s history period.
- If malware is suspected, pause syncing, scan the computer, secure the Yandex account, then inspect Trash and History.
- After recovery, download and verify a local copy, preferably in an independent backup location.
- If Trash was emptied or no earlier version exists, stop looking for generic undelete software: Yandex’s documented recovery paths do not cover permanent server deletion.
What Yandex’s limits mean in practice
Yandex Disk offers feature-based recovery rather than a separate recovery service. Trash restoration covers recently deleted items; History covers earlier contents of files that still exist; Search and Activity history resolve location and account confusion. The deciding facts are the cause of the loss, the time since the deletion or change, whether the item is still in Trash or History, and—inside a shared folder—which account owns the folder.
Yandex’s support documentation does not publish a recovery-success rate, and the 30-day, 14-day, and 90-day figures are service retention periods rather than independent statistics. Interface labels and plan terms can change, so use the labels shown by your current web or mobile version when following these steps.
