First establish whether the cryptocurrency was held by an exchange or in a self-custody wallet. For an exchange claim, you will generally need an official death certificate, proof that you are the executor or other legal representative, your current government photo ID, and signed instructions for the transfer. Coinbase, Kraken and Binance each review these claims under their own procedures, and local probate and tax rules still apply.
First determine where the cryptocurrency was held
An exchange can process only assets held in an account on that exchange. The recovery route is fundamentally different if the deceased person controlled the private keys themselves.

Do not assume that a familiar app proves where every asset is held. A person can have an exchange account while also moving coins to a hardware wallet. Search email, paper files, tax statements, bank records and transaction histories for account names, public wallet addresses and transfer destinations.
Preserve records without making an unauthorized transaction
Before contacting support, create a dated inventory of what you can establish without signing in as the deceased person. Save account emails, statements, tax documents, bank-transfer confirmations, public wallet addresses, transaction IDs and screenshots of account-identifying information. Keep originals and working copies in a location controlled by the estate.

- Record who found each document and when, which helps the executor maintain an evidence trail.
Using login credentials is not a substitute for authority to administer an estate. It can create account-security, terms-of-service and evidentiary problems even when the person making the attempt is a spouse or close relative.
Obtain legal authority before requesting a transfer
A death certificate proves the death; it usually does not prove that you may control the assets. Exchanges generally require a probate or equivalent document showing that you were appointed to act for the estate. The document accepted depends on the jurisdiction where the estate is administered.
Documents commonly used to establish authority
- Letters testamentary for an executor named in a will.
- Letters of administration when a court appoints an administrator.
- A probate order or comparable court appointment.
- An accepted small-estate affidavit or affidavit for collection, where local law permits it.
- Another legally valid inheritance document recognized by the relevant jurisdiction and exchange.
Estate-planning documents and intestate (no-will) law determine who is entitled to receive property. A will by itself may not be enough if a court appointment or statutory affidavit is required. If the estate crosses state or national borders, ask a probate lawyer which court and documents govern the account.
Prepare the claim packet
Make the packet consistent: names should match across the death certificate, court documents, identification and instruction letter. Scan in color where requested, keep each file legible, and retain a copy of everything submitted.

Submit the claim through the exchange’s official workflow
Coinbase
Use Coinbase’s Executor Services form rather than attempting to operate the deceased person’s account. The packet should contain the official death certificate, the probate or equivalent estate document, current government photo identification for the named representative and a signed instruction letter. The letter identifies the destination Coinbase account and the email associated with it, so create or confirm that destination account before submitting if the form requires it.
Coinbase’s current guidance states: “Coinbase doesn’t currently support naming a beneficiary for individual accounts.” That means the estate documents and applicable state intestate law control the transfer route; a family relationship alone does not replace the legal appointment.

Kraken
Kraken’s March 17, 2026 deceased-client guidance directs a legal representative to provide a complete color death certificate, documentation confirming appointment as representative, current government-issued photo ID and a signed, dated representative letter. Submit the claim to the compliance team using Kraken’s official support route. Be prepared to provide additional documents if compliance asks for them.
Kraken’s guidance says: “While Kraken doesn’t currently offer the option to add a beneficiary to an account, we do have a process to support families and legal representatives.” Earlier Kraken support guidance also suggests including the Kraken public account ID in an estate plan, which can help the estate identify the account without using login credentials.
Binance
Binance provides an Inheritance Appeal. The claimant must have a Binance account, identify the deceased user using the deceased account’s email address, phone number or Binance ID, and upload the requested legal materials. A dedicated team reviews the application. Binance states that the process usually takes one to two months, with longer handling possible when the matter is complex.
Binance cautions that the appeal is subject to applicable laws and terms and conditions and requires legally valid inheritance documents. Treat the one-to-two-month period as an estimate, not a deadline or a guarantee of approval.
Organize the filing so review is easier
A well-indexed packet reduces avoidable back-and-forth. Put the representative’s name and the deceased user’s identifying information on a cover sheet, then number the attachments in the same order as the exchange form. Use the exact legal name shown on the court appointment and explain any difference from the name on the exchange account, such as a former surname or a middle initial. If a document is not in the exchange’s accepted language or format, ask the compliance team what translation or certification it requires rather than sending an informal translation.
- Use a separate folder for each exchange and a separate inventory for self-custody wallets.
- Keep a copy of the signed instruction letter and note the date it was signed.
- Record the destination account identifier and associated email before authorizing any transfer.
- Save the case number, submission date and the name of the official channel used.
- Limit access to the packet to the executor, authorized counsel and professionals engaged by the estate.
Regional restrictions and account-specific terms can affect which documents are accepted. Ask the exchange to confirm a missing requirement in writing through the case channel. Do not rely on a forum post, a social-media message or an old help-page screenshot when the current official workflow gives different instructions.
What happens after submission
The exchange reviews the death evidence, your legal authority, your identity and the proposed destination for the assets. It may ask for clarification, a clearer scan, a court document from a particular jurisdiction or evidence connecting the representative to the account. Respond through the same official case channel and keep a dated log of every request and upload.

Do not send documents to a person who contacts you unexpectedly through social media, messaging apps or an unofficial email address. Verify that a request belongs to the exchange’s existing case before uploading anything. Never disclose a private key or recovery phrase as part of an exchange inheritance claim.

- Confirm the approved destination account and beneficiary or estate name before authorizing a transfer.
- Save the exchange’s approval notice, transfer confirmation, transaction IDs and final account statement.
- Record the asset quantity and its valuation date for the estate inventory.
- Give the estate’s lawyer and tax adviser the complete record, including fees and any tax forms supplied by the exchange.
- Distribute the assets only under the will, court order, settlement agreement or applicable intestate law.
Compare the workflows before you file
The important differences are not just the brand name. Compare the proof of authority accepted, whether a beneficiary designation exists, the submission channel, whether the claimant needs a new account, any stated processing estimate and possible regional limits. Coinbase requires an Executor Services submission and a destination Coinbase account in the signed instructions. Kraken routes the claim to compliance and may ask for more documents. Binance requires the claimant’s own Binance account and publishes a usual one-to-two-month review period. Coinbase and Kraken do not publish a universal completion time in the cited guidance.
These distinctions affect planning. For example, a claimant who has no Binance account must create one in the claimant’s own name; creating or using the deceased person’s credentials is not the same thing. Likewise, the absence of a beneficiary feature on Coinbase and Kraken means the estate’s legal documents remain central even when the surviving spouse is the expected recipient.
If the cryptocurrency is in a hardware wallet or other self-custody setup
A self-custody wallet has no exchange account for support staff to transfer. The estate must locate the wallet and obtain the private key or recovery phrase. Binance warns that encrypted or otherwise protected keys can be difficult to find and that assets may be lost permanently without access.
Handle key material as estate property
- Secure the hardware wallet, paper backup or encrypted file against loss, copying and unauthorized access.
- Do not photograph, email or paste a recovery phrase into a support ticket, cloud note or website.
- Do not give a recovery phrase or private key to an exchange employee, lawyer or anyone who approaches you unexpectedly.
- Ask a professional experienced in digital-asset estate administration to design the transfer process for the estate and jurisdiction.
If no private key or recovery phrase can be found, an exchange cannot recover the assets. A wallet address or transaction history can demonstrate that coins exist, but it does not provide the signing authority needed to move them.

Valuation, tax and estate records
Keep the exchange’s statements and transfer confirmations with the estate file. The executor may need the asset quantity, the value on the legally relevant date, acquisition information, fees and the date the estate or beneficiary received the assets. The correct valuation, basis and reporting treatment depend on the estate’s jurisdiction and the asset’s legal classification.
Ask a tax professional who handles cryptocurrency and estates how to report the holding and any later sale or transfer. Do not assume that an exchange’s tax form answers every estate or inheritance-tax question. Local probate, inheritance and tax rules require jurisdiction-specific advice.

Common problems and how to correct them
You have a death certificate but no court appointment
Stop before submitting a transfer request. Obtain the probate, letters, affidavit or other authority recognized where the estate is administered. Proof of death alone is usually insufficient.
The deceased person never named a beneficiary
Use the estate process. Coinbase and Kraken state that individual accounts do not currently provide a beneficiary option, so the will, court appointment and applicable intestate law determine entitlement.

You cannot identify the account

The claim is taking longer than expected
Binance publishes a usual one-to-two-month estimate and warns that complex cases can take longer. Coinbase and Kraken do not publish a universal completion time in the cited guidance. Check the case status through the official channel and answer requests promptly; court disputes, incomplete documents and cross-border issues can extend review.
You received a message promising rapid recovery
Treat unsolicited recovery offers as a fraud risk. An authentic inheritance review will not require your private key or recovery phrase. Continue only through the exchange’s verified support workflow and your estate advisers.
