If you cannot access an old Old School RuneScape (OSRS) character, first identify whether it still uses a legacy RuneScape login or has been moved to a Jagex Account. The recovery identifier and support route are different. Use the login username or login email—not the character’s current display name—then try the matching password reset. If that fails, submit Jagex’s full recovery appeal with accurate, original account evidence.
The steps below cover forgotten logins, missing reset emails, an inaccessible mailbox, denied appeals, “No accounts could be found,” suspicious-login locks, and connection blocks. Recovery is an ownership check, not a guaranteed restoration; Jagex says it verifies the original account creator.

Identify the account type and the correct login identifier
Do not begin with the name other players see above your character. That display name can change and is not the identifier used for legacy recovery. Determine which credentials the account uses instead.

| Account type | Login identifier | Recovery route |
|---|---|---|
| Legacy account created before November 2010 | The original login username, which is the first-ever character name | Legacy password reset, followed by the full recovery appeal if necessary |
| Legacy account created after November 2010 | The login email; it can differ from the email currently registered on the account | Legacy password reset, followed by the full recovery appeal if necessary |
| Upgraded Jagex Account | The email selected for the Jagex Account, which may differ from the old legacy login email | Jagex Account password reset |
| Account managed exclusively through a third party | The linked Apple, Facebook, Google, or Steam account | Recovery with that provider |
A character that was upgraded to a Jagex Account no longer uses its previous RuneScape login to sign in. Conversely, entering a Jagex Account email into the legacy form can lead you down the wrong path.

Make a quick pre-recovery checklist
Before submitting anything, write down every identifier and address you can distinguish. Record the character’s display name separately from the login username, the old login email separately from the current contact email, and the Jagex Account email separately if the character was upgraded. This prevents a common mistake: using a familiar address that was only used for notifications or billing when the form is asking for the original sign-in identifier.
Also note whether you are trying to recover one character or several. A Jagex Account can hold multiple characters, while an old legacy login may represent only the character associated with that credential. If one character appears after signing in but another is missing, do not assume the visible character is the account you intended to recover; check the account and character selection details in the official Jagex interface.
Forgotten login name, email, or account address
When the legacy login is forgotten
Use Jagex’s forgotten-login reminders for a legacy account. For accounts created before November 2010, try the first character name ever used as the login username, not a later display name. For newer legacy accounts, try the login email address. Remember that a login email may not be the same as the address currently listed for contact or recovery.

An old character name, an email address from school or a previous internet provider, or an address used for an early membership payment may be more useful than the address you use today. Do not keep submitting random variations: every attempt should use a plausible original login identifier.
When the Jagex Account email is forgotten
Search every mailbox you may have used for Jagex verification messages, including older RuneScape email addresses. Search for Jagex and RuneScape messages, check archived folders, and include addresses that you no longer use regularly but can still open. Jagex says it cannot disclose or change a forgotten Jagex Account email for security reasons, so finding the original mailbox is essential.
If you cannot open that mailbox, use the mailbox provider’s account-recovery process. Jagex cannot substitute a new email through a normal password-reset request when the original Jagex Account email is unknown or inaccessible. Recovering the email account and recovering the game account are separate tasks, so complete the provider’s verification steps first where possible.
When another service manages the login
If the account was created and is managed exclusively through Apple, Facebook, Google, or Steam, use that provider’s account-recovery process. Jagex’s own legacy reset form cannot replace recovery of the third-party identity. Make sure you are restoring the same provider account that was originally linked; signing in with a different Apple, Facebook, Google, or Steam profile can create the impression that the RuneScape character disappeared.
Try the appropriate password reset first
Jagex Account password reset
- Open the Jagex Account sign-in page and enter the email chosen for that Jagex Account.
- Select Forgot password.
- Open the message sent to that mailbox and follow its instructions.
- If it is missing, check spam or junk folders and confirm that you entered the correct account email.
- Use the process again to request a new link if needed. Jagex says each recovery link is valid for one hour.
Use the newest link you request and complete it before the one-hour window expires. If several messages arrive, older links may no longer be the one you should follow. A reset message proves that you control the mailbox receiving it, but it does not change the distinction between a Jagex Account email and a legacy login email.

If you cannot open the mailbox itself, Jagex directs you to the email provider’s recovery process. Recovering the mailbox is separate from proving ownership of the game account. Do not send your mailbox password to Jagex or to anyone claiming to offer an unofficial recovery service.
Legacy RuneScape password reset
Start with the legacy password-reset option under Can’t log in? Use the account’s login username or login email. If no message arrives or the reset does not restore access, possible causes include a changed or inaccessible registered email, an attacker changing the email, delivery problems, or an authenticator that cannot be removed. Those cases require the full legacy recovery appeal rather than repeated guesses.
A missing email does not by itself prove that the character was deleted. First check the spelling of the identifier, spam filtering, old inboxes, and whether you accidentally used a display name. If the address was changed by someone else, continuing to request resets to the old address will not restore access; move to the appeal route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSubmit a full legacy recovery appeal when reset fails
Jagex Support states: “If you can’t reset your password, you’ll have to fill out our full recovery form.” Use the legacy login username or login email and choose Recover. If the reset message never arrives, select the contact or support option that leads to the appeal form.
- Enter a new email address that you can open reliably. This is the address Jagex can use for the appeal result and, if approved, the account registration.
- Complete every field with accurate information. Do not substitute the in-game display name for the login identifier.
- Submit the form and monitor the new address, including its spam folder. Jagex says it aims to send the outcome email within 24 hours.
- If no outcome arrives, check that the address was not mistyped and that you still have access to it, then submit again with the corrected address.
Use one dependable address that you control throughout the process. An address that cannot receive mail, has a spelling error, or is blocked by a full inbox can make a completed appeal look as if it vanished. If Jagex’s outcome does not arrive within the stated period, verify the address before assuming the appeal was rejected.
Evidence that can strengthen the appeal
Jagex’s denial guidance focuses on information available to the original account creator. Supply only details you genuinely know; invented answers can weaken the case.
- Submit from the device and location normally used to play, when possible.
- Use the originally registered email or an older email used for billing if you still control it.
- Provide up to three old passwords that you actually used.
- Include payment details or transaction records connected with the account.
- Give an approximate creation date and place.
- Add old recovery answers you can honestly recall.
- Do not mask the connection with a VPN or proxy during the appeal.
Organize the information before opening the form. Look for old membership receipts, payment records, and emails in your own archives, then enter the details consistently. Approximate information is useful when it is honestly approximate; a confident but invented date or password is not better than admitting that you do not remember. Never copy another player’s answers or rely on a character’s recent activity as your main proof.
Jagex says the purpose is to verify the account creator. Its guidance treats the original creator as the owner even where another person later played, bought, or shared the account. A buyer or account sharer therefore may not be accepted as the owner simply because they know recent character details.

What to do after an appeal is denied
A denial is not a reason to change facts or submit random guesses. First verify that you used the login username or login email, rather than the character’s display name. Then retry through the official recovery form with stronger original evidence.
- Recheck the spelling of the login identifier and the new contact email.
- Use a familiar device and usual playing location.
- Replace vague guesses with specific, truthful historical details.
- Try older passwords, billing records, creation information, and recovery answers that were omitted previously.
- Avoid a VPN or proxy while submitting.
Jagex does not promise approval for any individual answer. The appeal must establish that you are the original creator, not merely someone who currently knows the character.
Do not treat a denial as permission to open a chain of duplicate tickets or to purchase a service claiming it can bypass Jagex’s checks. The official form is the relevant route. A second submission is useful only when you have corrected the identifier, contact address, or historical evidence; repeating the same incomplete information is unlikely to clarify ownership.
“No accounts could be found”
When the form reports No accounts could be found, treat the login identifier as the first suspect. Check for a mistyped email, a forgotten legacy username, or confusion between a display name and the actual login.
Check both account-era possibilities. If the character was created before November 2010, the login is the first-ever character name. If it was created after November 2010, the login is an email, even if another email is now registered for contact. If the character was upgraded, use the Jagex Account email rather than either legacy identifier.
If you are certain the identifier is correct and the character still cannot be located, Jagex says a hijacker may have imported the character into a Jagex Account. Contact Jagex Support promptly through its official support channel and explain that the correct legacy identifier no longer finds the account. Do not create additional accounts or repeatedly alter the identifier while trying to force a match.
Account locked after a suspicious login attempt
A suspicious-login lock is an account-level protection measure. Jagex says the account remains locked until its owner successfully recovers it. Before starting recovery, secure the computer or mobile device you normally use: remove malware, install current operating-system and browser updates, and make sure no unknown person can use the device.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the email account as well. If someone can read your mailbox, they may be able to intercept reset links or change account details after you recover the game account. Change the mailbox password through the provider, enable its available security protections, and review unfamiliar sessions before relying on that address for the appeal.

Complete the applicable password reset or legacy recovery appeal after the device is safe. Once access returns, Jagex recommends upgrading a legacy account to a Jagex Account for stronger protection. That upgrade is a security recommendation, not a prerequisite for completing the recovery.
Do not confuse a connection block with a locked account
An access-blocked message can concern the connection rather than the account. Jagex says that, in this situation, the account itself has not been blocked.
Check the following before filing an ownership appeal:
- Disable a VPN and test the normal internet connection.
- Try a clean browser session and review browser extensions.
- Confirm that the device’s time zone and clock are correct.
- Install current browser, launcher, and operating-system software.
- Rule out local network or connection failures.
Close unusual extensions and retry from a normal browser profile so an extension is not changing the sign-in page or blocking its scripts. If the issue occurs only on one network or device, that points toward a connection problem rather than evidence that the character has been taken over.
If the error persists, send Jagex Support the requested report information, including the Ray-ID shown with the access-blocked message. A connection report cannot substitute for account recovery when the account is genuinely locked.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Secure the account after you regain access
Recovery restores access; it does not automatically secure every account connected to you. Jagex’s security guidance recommends these follow-up actions:
- Set a unique password that you do not reuse elsewhere.
- Enable an authenticator app.
- Store the ten provided backup codes somewhere separate from the device that holds the authenticator.
- Secure the email account with its own strong, unique password and available multi-factor protection.
- Review linked third-party accounts and remove anything you do not recognize.
- End active sessions if you suspect another person is still signed in.
- Keep the computer or mobile device updated and free of malware.
Keep the backup codes available but private; they are for regaining access if the authenticator device is lost, not for sharing with another player. Review linked accounts and active sessions after changing credentials so an old connection cannot immediately undo the recovery.

Jagex Account character limits and changing requirements
Jagex’s FAQ describes Jagex Accounts as supporting up to 20 characters. Characters moved to one use the new Jagex Account credentials instead of their previous RuneScape login. Launcher, account, and security requirements can change, so check the current Jagex Account FAQ when an on-screen instruction differs from the route described above.
The character limit matters when planning an upgrade or trying to understand why several characters appear together after sign-in. It does not change the recovery evidence required for an individual legacy character. If the character is already inside a Jagex Account, recover that account’s email and password rather than trying to reset the old character login.
A practical recovery order
Use this order to avoid sending the wrong form:
- Identify legacy, Jagex Account, or third-party management.
- Find the correct login identifier; never rely on the display name.
- Run the matching password reset and check spam or junk.
- If a legacy reset fails, secure the mailbox and device, then submit the full recovery appeal with original evidence.
- If denied, correct the identifier and improve the truthful evidence rather than guessing.
- If no account is found despite a confirmed identifier, contact Jagex promptly about a possible import into a Jagex Account.
- If the message describes a suspicious lock, secure the device and recover ownership.
- If it describes an access-blocked connection, troubleshoot VPN, browser, clock, software, and network issues and provide the Ray-ID if requested.
- After recovery, change credentials, enable an authenticator, protect backup codes, review linked accounts, and end unfamiliar sessions.
Common recovery mistakes to avoid
- Using the display name: the visible character name may have changed and is not the legacy login.
- Mixing account eras: a pre-November 2010 account uses its first-ever character name, while a later legacy account uses a login email.
- Using the wrong email: the current contact address, old billing address, legacy login email, and Jagex Account email can be different.
- Submitting invented evidence: guesses about passwords, dates, or recovery answers do not establish original ownership.
- Appealing from a masked connection: Jagex advises against VPNs and proxies for recovery appeals.
- Ignoring the mailbox: a compromised email can allow an attacker to intercept the next reset.
- Calling a connection error a ban: an access-blocked message may concern the network, browser, clock, or software instead of the account.
Frequently Asked Questions
What login should I use for an old OSRS account?
Use the original login username if the account was created before November 2010. For a later legacy account, use its login email. If the character was upgraded, use the email chosen for the Jagex Account. Do not use the current in-game display name.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What if I no longer have the registered email?
For a Jagex Account, recover the mailbox through its email provider. For a legacy account, try the password reset and then submit the full recovery appeal with a new reachable email and accurate original account details.
How long does a Jagex recovery appeal take?
Jagex says it aims to send the outcome email within 24 hours. If nothing arrives, check that the new email was typed correctly, that you can access it, and that the message is not in spam before submitting again.
Why does the reset email never arrive?
Check that you used the correct account identifier, inspect spam or junk folders, and confirm that the mailbox is accessible. A changed email, an attacker’s alteration, delivery trouble, or an authenticator issue can require the full legacy recovery appeal.
What should I do if my appeal is denied?
Recheck the login username or email, use a familiar device and location, avoid VPNs and proxies, and submit stronger truthful evidence such as up to three old passwords, billing records, approximate creation information, or old recovery answers. Approval is not guaranteed.

What does “No accounts could be found” mean?
First check for a mistyped or forgotten identifier and make sure you did not use the display name. If the identifier is definitely correct, contact Jagex promptly because a hijacker may have imported the character into a Jagex Account.
How do I handle an account locked for a suspicious login?
Secure the computer or mobile device first, then complete the matching password reset or recovery appeal. Jagex says the account stays locked until its owner successfully recovers it.
Is an access-blocked message the same as an account lock?
No. Jagex says an access-blocked connection does not mean the account itself is blocked. Check VPN use, browser extensions, device time zone, software, and the network; include the Ray-ID in a support report if the error persists.
The Bottom Line
Start with the account type, then use the correct login identifier—not the character display name. Reset the password through the matching Jagex route, and use the full legacy recovery appeal when a reset fails or the email is unavailable. Submit only truthful original evidence, retry carefully after a denial, and contact Jagex if a confirmed identifier returns no account. Once access is restored, secure the device and email, enable an authenticator, protect the ten backup codes, review linked accounts, and end unfamiliar sessions.
