Choose Update before Restore when offered and you have not already tried Update: Restore reinstalls iOS and erases the iPhone. Recover erased data from a backup if one is available. Apple’s guidance cited here does not confirm that a previous iOS version can be installed, so a downgrade cannot be promised.
Choose the recovery path that matches the problem
If the iPhone still starts, use the recovery choices it presents before connecting it to a computer. Apple says iOS Recovery may launch automatically after an incomplete update or restore, or when the phone detects a stability issue. It attempts to resolve the problem and then offers options suited to the situation. See Apple’s iOS Recovery guidance.

The options are not interchangeable, and some erase data. Check that a backup is available before choosing an erase or restore action if the phone is usable.

Apple describes these options and their requirements in its iOS Recovery instructions. If Recovery Assistant repeatedly returns without resolving the issue, or the phone will not start, use the computer-based recovery steps below.

Use a Mac or PC if the iPhone will not start
Apple identifies recovery mode as a possible next step if the Apple logo has remained on screen for several minutes without a progress bar, a computer does not recognize the iPhone or reports it is in recovery mode, the “Connect to computer” screen appears, or the iPhone keeps returning to Recovery Assistant without being fixed.
- Connect the iPhone to a Mac or PC with a USB data cable compatible with both devices’ ports. On a Mac, open Finder; on a PC, open the Apple Devices app. Leave the iPhone connected.
- Enter recovery mode using the sequence for your iPhone model:
- iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and later): Quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then hold the side button until the “Connect to computer” screen appears.
- iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Hold the top or side button and Volume Down together until the “Connect to computer” screen appears.
- iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation): Hold the Home button and the top or side button together until the “Connect to computer” screen appears.
- When Finder or Apple Devices offers Update or Restore, try Update first if you have not already tried it. Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data on the device.
- If the software download takes more than 15 minutes and the iPhone leaves the recovery screen, let the download finish. Then repeat the button sequence to enter recovery mode and continue.

Restore personal data from a backup
After an erase or a new setup, you can restore data from an available iCloud or computer backup. An iCloud backup is restored during device setup. A computer backup can be restored through Finder on newer Macs or iTunes on older Macs and Windows devices. If the computer backup is encrypted, you need its password. For an iCloud backup, update the iPhone before restoring. If a computer backup requires a newer version, Apple’s guidance is to finish setup without transferring data, update iOS, erase the device, then set it up again and restore the backup. Does recovery roll the iPhone back to an earlier iOS?
Recovery Assistant, computer-based Update or Restore, and backup restoration are ways to repair or set up the iPhone; they are not confirmation that an earlier iOS release can be installed. The Apple instructions cited here do not establish whether a particular earlier version is installable on a given iPhone at this time. Check Apple’s current guidance for your device and software version before pursuing a downgrade, and do not assume that an older firmware file will work. If the urgent issue is that the phone will not start, use the recovery steps above.

Contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider if recovery mode cannot update or restore the iPhone, or if a required button is broken or stuck. Apple lists these as reasons the device may need service in its recovery-mode troubleshooting guidance.
