You can regain access only by finding the original password and every other factor configured for that specific database, or by opening a pre-existing readable export. An older .kdbx copy can save you from deletion or corruption, but it remains encrypted and still needs valid credentials.
There is no master-password reset
KeePassXC encrypts the database rather than storing a recoverable copy of the master password. The official Getting Started Guide warns: “Losing the database password might result in permanent locking of your database and you will not be able to retrieve information stored in the database.” That warning applies even when you own the computer and the database file.

A support request, reinstalling KeePassXC, changing the operating-system account, or buying a new security token does not decrypt a locked file. Recovery depends on something that was already valid for that database: the exact master password, the exact key file, the exact configured hardware factor, or a readable export made before access was lost.
Know what KeePassXC may require at unlock
A database can use a master password alone or combine it with additional components. The components are combined into the database’s encryption key, so having one does not replace another.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
| Unlock component | What it means | What recovery requires |
|---|---|---|
| Master password | The secret entered in the database unlock dialog. | The original characters, capitalization, spacing and symbols, entered correctly. |
| Key file | An external file selected when the database was configured. The KeePassXC FAQ says the file must remain unchanged. | The same file contents, not merely a file with the same name or extension. |
| Hardware factor | An optional challenge-response device, such as a configured YubiKey or OnlyKey, documented in the Getting Started Guide. | The same configured device and its required response, available when unlocking. |
If two or more components were enabled, all of them are needed. A replacement key file, a newly purchased token, or a guessed filename cannot stand in for the original configuration.
Work through this recovery checklist
1. Confirm that you are opening the intended database
Before diagnosing a password, verify the file itself. Check the full path, filename and modification date in KeePassXC’s open dialog or your file manager. Confirm that it is the expected .kdbx database rather than a newly created empty file, a temporary copy, or an older database belonging to another account.
- Search local drives and removable media for other
.kdbxfiles with meaningful names. - Compare file sizes and dates with the copy you normally used.
- Do not overwrite the current file while investigating; make a separate copy for any tests.
- If the file was synchronized, note which device last saved it and whether another device still has a known-good copy.
A different database can produce the same-looking password error, so identifying the file is the first decision point.

2. Retry the original password under the conditions in which it was created
Treat this as a careful memory and typing check, not a KeePassXC recovery feature. Enter the password manually and inspect the environment that can alter what is sent:
- Turn off Caps Lock and verify the keyboard layout or input language.
- Check whether a password manager, clipboard tool or browser inserted an accidental leading or trailing space.
- Try the capitalization, punctuation and number substitutions you actually used at the time; do not silently “correct” an unusual spelling.
- If the password was recorded on paper or in a personal note, compare every character, including repeated symbols and spaces.
- Consider whether you are remembering a newer password for the same database. KeePassXC changes the password only when you explicitly save that change.
Make a small, finite list of plausible variants and stop rather than repeatedly guessing at random. Each attempt should be against the confirmed database file.
3. Determine whether this database used a key file
Recall the unlock setup shown when the database was created or last opened. If a key file was selected, locate the exact original file in the places you personally use for credentials: a dedicated encrypted backup, a removable drive, an offline archive or a synchronized folder.
The FAQ at keepassxc.org/docs explains that changing the key file can make unlocking fail and that losing it means losing access. Therefore:

- Do not rename, edit, convert or “repair” a candidate key file.
- Do not assume that every file with a similar name is interchangeable; the contents, not the filename, are what matter.
- Look for a backup made at the same time as the database and preserve the original candidate untouched.
- If you find several candidates, test copies one at a time while keeping the originals offline.
A key file by itself is insufficient when the database also requires the master password or a hardware factor.
4. Check for a configured hardware challenge-response device
KeePassXC can use an optional hardware factor. The Getting Started Guide describes using a configured token during unlock, and the FAQ names devices such as YubiKey and OnlyKey. This works only when that particular device was enrolled for this database.
- Recall whether the unlock dialog previously prompted you to connect or touch a token.
- Find the same physical device and connect it using the method you used when the database was configured.
- Use the database’s existing master password and key file as well, if those were part of the setup.
- If the device was lost, check your own documented backup plan; purchasing a new token cannot recreate the old challenge-response secret.
A token that was never configured for this file is not a reset device. Do not change the database’s settings while it is locked in the hope of adding a replacement factor.
5. Search for encrypted database copies and version history
Copies are valuable when the active file was deleted, truncated or corrupted. KeePassXC’s documentation recommends keeping backups and notes that an encrypted database can be stored in cloud storage with automatic backups or version history. Check:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The folder where KeePassXC was configured to create automatic backups.
- Previous versions in your storage service, including files deleted recently.
- Offline disks, another computer, a NAS or a removable drive used for routine backups.
- File names that include dates or a backup suffix.
Open a copy only after duplicating it, and keep the original untouched. Every copy is still encrypted. If the password was changed after an older copy was made, that copy may accept the older password, but it cannot be opened without the credentials that belonged to that version. Cloud synchronization protects against some forms of file loss; it does not give the provider a way to decrypt or reset your database.
6. Look for a readable export made while the database was open
Search your own files, printed records and offline archives for an earlier HTML export or another export format you intentionally saved. KeePassXC’s paper-backup guide describes printing an HTML export as a human-readable backup.
This route can work without the current .kdbx password only because the export contains the entries in readable form. A new export cannot be generated from a locked database. Treat any old export as highly sensitive plaintext:

- Store paper in a physically secure location and limit who can see it.
- Protect an electronic export with encrypted storage and access controls.
- If you created an intermediate HTML file for printing, follow KeePassXC’s guidance to delete that file and empty the recycle bin after verifying the printout.
- Assume that screenshots, PDF print drivers and cloud copies may also contain unencrypted passwords.
The User Guide warns that exports can store passwords and other sensitive information unencrypted. An export is therefore an emergency fallback, not a substitute for a properly protected database.
Common recovery mistakes to avoid
Several tempting actions address the wrong problem. Renaming a key file does not restore its original contents. Creating a new key file does not match a database that was bound to an older one. Restoring an older encrypted copy is useful only when you also know the password and any additional factor associated with that copy. Similarly, opening a cloud version does not turn encrypted bytes into readable entries.
Do not edit a .kdbx file with a text editor, convert it to another format while it is locked, or overwrite it with a newly created database. Keep the original file and candidate key files intact, and work from duplicates. Avoid uploading the database to an unknown website or paying a service that promises guaranteed decryption. KeePassXC documents no reset service or guaranteed cracking route.
What each possible path can and cannot do
| Path | Can help now? | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Original master password, checked carefully | Yes, if you recall it exactly. | KeePassXC cannot reset it for a locked database. |
| Exact configured key file | Yes, when this database used one and the file is available. | A changed, edited or missing file may block access; a replacement file does not work. |
| Exact configured hardware factor | Yes, when that factor was enrolled and is still available. | A newly purchased token does not substitute for the original configuration. |
Older encrypted .kdbx copy |
Possibly, if the active file was lost or corrupted and you know that copy’s credentials. | It remains encrypted and does not reset the password. |
| Earlier printed or exported backup | Yes, if it was created while the database was accessible. | It contains sensitive information in readable, unencrypted form. |
| New hardware-token purchase | No, for an already forgotten password. | Hardware factors are configured unlock components, not reset devices. |
Use KeePassXC’s backup features for file loss, not password recovery
When you can open the database again, use the Save Database Backup… command documented in the User Guide to create a separate encrypted copy. KeePassXC also supports configuring a backup before saving changes. These functions give you a recoverable file if the working copy is corrupted or accidentally deleted; they do not create a second password or bypass encryption.
Keep at least one copy independent of the device that normally holds the database. A practical arrangement is an offline copy plus a versioned synchronized copy, with access to the storage account protected separately. Label each backup with its creation date and, where appropriate, the password-generation period so you know which credentials it may accept. Never test a backup by overwriting the only original.
Recommended Free Tools
If you use cloud storage, enable its version history or equivalent retention feature as recommended in the Getting Started Guide. The service stores encrypted bytes; it cannot read entries, supply a forgotten password or manufacture the key file.
If none of the required credentials exists
Once you have ruled out the intended file, plausible original password, exact key file, configured hardware factor and readable pre-existing export, the evidence-based expectation is permanent loss of the entries. KeePassXC documentation does not promise a recovery service or a guaranteed way to crack a database. Be wary of anyone who asks you to upload the .kdbx file or claims that reinstalling the application will unlock it.

Do not delete the locked database while searching. Preserve it and any associated key files as evidence of what was configured. If you later remember the password or locate the exact factor, you can try again. If you must rebuild, create a new database and recover individual accounts through their own service’s password-reset process; that is separate from decrypting the KeePassXC file.
Prevent the next lockout
Record every unlock component securely
Maintain a protected record of which databases use a master password alone, a key file, a hardware factor, or a combination. Store the key file in at least two independent secure locations and keep a backup of any configured token according to your security policy. A note that says only “KeePassXC backup” is not enough if you cannot identify the matching key file and credential set.

- Retain the active database plus multiple historical copies.
- Use automatic backups or version history so accidental deletion and corruption are reversible.
- Keep one copy offline or on a separate account to reduce the impact of ransomware or account loss.
- Restrict permissions so ordinary applications and other users cannot casually read the files.
Test that backups are usable
On a schedule that fits how often your entries change, duplicate a backup into a temporary location and verify that it opens with the documented password and, when required, the matching key file or hardware factor. Perform the test on a copy, then remove the temporary plaintext or decrypted material. A backup that has never been opened is only an assumption.
Maintain a controlled emergency export, if your risk model permits it
An HTML or paper backup can be useful during an emergency, travel disruption or device failure, but it is an unencrypted disclosure of every entry. Create it only while the database is unlocked, protect the resulting paper or file as you would the passwords themselves, and destroy obsolete exports. The paper-backup workflow is described at keepassxc.org/blog/2020-10-03-paper-backup/.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I recover my KeePassXC password?
There is no KeePassXC password-recovery or reset function. Check the exact database file, then carefully retry the original password, including capitalization, punctuation, spaces, keyboard layout and Caps Lock. If the database used a key file or hardware factor, you must also supply the exact configured component. Otherwise, look for a readable export created while the database was open or an older encrypted copy whose credentials you know.
I forgot my KeePassXC master password—what can I do?
Preserve the locked .kdbx file and work from a duplicate. Search your own records for plausible password variants, the unchanged key file, the configured YubiKey or OnlyKey, cloud version history, local backup folders and printed or HTML exports. A backup copy can repair deletion or corruption, but it does not bypass encryption. If none of the required credentials or a readable export exists, access may be permanently lost.

Can KeePassXC reset my master password?
No. KeePassXC cannot reset or reveal the master password for a locked database. Reinstalling the application, changing the computer account, contacting support, or buying a new hardware token does not create valid credentials for the existing file.
Can I open a KeePassXC database without the key file?
Only if that database was not configured to require a key file, or if you have another valid recovery route such as the original password for a version that did not use one or a readable export. When a key file was configured, the original file contents are required; a replacement with the same filename is not equivalent. The master password and hardware factor, if configured, are still required too.
Will an older or cloud-synced KDBX copy unlock the database?
It may help if the current file was deleted, corrupted or replaced, and the older copy is intact. However, the copy remains encrypted. You need the password and any key file or hardware factor associated with that version. Cloud storage and version history preserve encrypted bytes; they cannot decrypt the database or reset its password.
Can a new YubiKey or OnlyKey recover my database?
No. A hardware factor works only when that particular device was configured for the database. A newly purchased token does not contain the old challenge-response configuration and cannot substitute for a lost device. Use the original device and the other required credentials, if available.
Can I create a new export from a locked KeePassXC database?
No. KeePassXC can export entries only while the database is unlocked. Search instead for an HTML, paper or other export made earlier. Such exports are readable and unencrypted, so protect them as seriously as the passwords themselves and delete obsolete intermediate files.
Should I use a password-cracking or recovery service?
KeePassXC does not promise a guaranteed cracking or recovery service. Avoid uploading your database to an untrusted website or paying anyone who guarantees decryption. First exhaust your own records, exact unlock factors, backups and pre-existing exports, while preserving the original file.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: KeePassXC has no master-password reset. Your realistic options are the exact original password, the exact key file and hardware factor configured for that database, a readable export made before lockout, or an older encrypted copy whose credentials you know. Keep the locked file intact, avoid untrusted recovery promises, and establish independent, tested backups once access is restored.
