After your VPS comes back, first confirm you can reach it, then check and restart the FFmpeg service if needed. Finally, verify in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving the right feed and that the broadcast event is live. A running FFmpeg process alone does not confirm that the intended YouTube event has resumed.

Confirm the VPS is reachable
Reconnect over SSH and verify that the server has network access. Check your provider’s status or support information and, if available, the reboot time and reason. Until the host is reachable, this is a VPS or network issue rather than an FFmpeg issue. The provider is not specified here, so provider-specific reboot steps or restoration times cannot be established.

Review the current boot’s error messages before restarting it. Also check whether the unit is enabled to start at boot; otherwise, a later VPS restart may leave the stream stopped again. Fix the cause, then start or restart FFmpeg
If the service is stopped, correct the error shown in its logs, then start it. If it is already running but stuck or failing, restart it only after checking the latest error. Common causes include a missing or moved media file, incorrect file permissions, insufficient disk space, a bad command-line option, or a changed stream key. A restart without correcting the underlying cause can produce the same failure again.

Verify the YouTube output configuration
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm the stream URL and key used by the encoder. YouTube’s encoder help explains where to find those settings and how to reset a compromised key: YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming. If you reset the key, update the VPS configuration securely before starting FFmpeg again. Never share the real key in a public command, screenshot, support post, or log excerpt.

Confirm YouTube receives the feed and the event is live
Wait for the incoming preview, then inspect stream health and timestamped messages in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during an event; follow the error shown there rather than guessing at the cause. Reconnecting an encoder does not guarantee that every event resumes automatically. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived, but that does not guarantee a reconnect will continue the same event.

Check where playback resumes
If FFmpeg starts again from a file or playlist, determine whether it begins at the start or continues from a saved position. A newly started process does not inherently retain the previous process’s media position.
What each recovery layer can and cannot do

Prevent the next restart from stopping the stream
Run FFmpeg under boot-enabled process supervision
Configure FFmpeg as a foreground systemd service, enable it at boot, and use a controlled restart delay and useful logs. This is the layer that can launch a new FFmpeg process after the VPS itself reboots; the previous process no longer exists after a host restart. Protect the stream key with suitable file permissions or a supported environment or credential mechanism. Validate the unit for the systemd version installed on your VPS and test it with the actual media source before relying on unattended recovery.
Use output retries only for the failures they cover
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documents options including attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time for certain output failures. Its manual gives an example of continuing processing through a temporary network outage and attempting to recover streaming. Check the current FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation against your installed build and exact output path. FIFO recovery can help when the process remains alive; it is not a replacement for a boot-enabled service after a VPS restart, and it cannot fix a persistent network outage, bad key, or missing input.
Use settings YouTube supports and test the whole path
YouTube documents RTMP and RTMPS as encoder protocols and recommends RTMPS where supported. Its current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Available codecs, resolutions, and frame rates depend on the ingest protocol and stream configuration; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings rather than assuming every combination is supported. Test the media source, service startup, logs, and Live Control Room preview together before relying on unattended recovery.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The VPS is unreachable
Check the provider’s status and support channel. Wait until the instance and network are reachable before diagnosing FFmpeg; no provider-specific remedy or recovery time can be given without knowing the provider.

The service is inactive
Inspect
journalctl -u <service-name> -b, correct the reported cause, and then start the unit. Check its boot enablement so it can launch after a future restart. -
FFmpeg runs, but YouTube receives no feed
Verify the exact ingest URL and protocol, stream key, outbound network access, and FFmpeg output. Use the URL and key shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming a remembered value is current.

YouTube rejects the encoder
Read the timestamped stream-health message and follow its guidance. If it indicates a key problem, reset the key in YouTube and update the VPS configuration securely; do not reset it speculatively.

YouTube shows video, but viewers cannot see a live event
Check the event state and follow the controls shown in Live Control Room. An incoming feed does not by itself establish that the event is live.

The output breaks repeatedly while FFmpeg stays alive
Check whether the failure matches a case supported by the FIFO muxer’s recovery options. If the input is missing, the key is wrong, the network loss persists, or the host has rebooted, address that problem instead of relying on output retries.
