A drop in Google Search traffic does not by itself mean your WordPress site has a penalty. First check Search Console’s Manual Actions report: if it identifies an action, fix the listed problem across its full scope and then request a review. If the report is clear, investigate indexing, security, site changes, seasonality and search demand instead; a reconsideration request is not a general appeal of lost rankings.
First confirm what changed
Use Google Search Console before changing content or links. In Performance, compare the affected period with an equivalent period and review clicks, impressions, queries and pages, country, device and search type. Search Console can show up to 16 months of data where available, which may help distinguish a recurring seasonal pattern from a new decline. Note whether the loss affects the whole site, a group of pages or one URL. Google’s Search Console and its traffic-drop debugging guide provide the relevant starting points.
Record when the decline began and compare it with changes such as a site migration, URL or template updates, plugin deployments, server problems, or a Google Search update. Timing can suggest where to investigate, but it does not prove the cause.
Check the evidence before calling it a penalty
Manual action
Open the Manual Actions report in Search Console and read the exact action and affected scope. Google may detect spam through automated systems or, when needed, human review that results in a manual action. A traffic decline alone does not establish that a manual action exists. Google’s spam policies describe practices that may violate its rules, and its manual actions documentation explains the report and action types.

Security and technical problems
Review the Security Issues, Page indexing and Crawl stats reports, then use URL Inspection on representative affected pages. Check whether Google can fetch and index them, and look for server errors, unexpected page-not-found responses, robots.txt blocks or a noindex directive. Security alerts for malware or phishing also require attention because they can affect user access and Search visibility.
If the evidence points to WordPress, inspect the affected templates and pages as well as comments or other user-generated areas, plugins, theme code and server configuration. A compromised plugin or injected redirect is a different problem from a content-policy violation, even if both coincide with lost traffic.

Ranking, demand and site changes
If Manual Actions is clear and there is no security or indexing issue, continue with the traffic pattern: check for a relevant ranking update, seasonality or changes in search demand, query-specific competition, and URL or migration changes. Google’s debugging guide recommends comparing the data and waiting a few weeks after improvements before evaluating their effect. Do not submit a reconsideration request simply because rankings fell.
Match the remedy to the evidence

These causes are not interchangeable. Reconsideration is for a fixed manual action, and a security issue should be addressed through its relevant Search Console process. Neither is a catch-all appeal for ordinary ranking changes.

Fix a manual action across its full scope
Use the action description in Search Console to define the work. Google says correcting only some affected pages does not earn a partial return to results. Make sure corrected pages are accessible to Google: they should not require a login, sit behind a paywall, or be blocked by robots.txt or noindex.

- Unnatural links: Make a good-faith effort to have problematic links removed before considering disavowal for links that cannot be removed. Disavowing every backlink is not a substitute for cleanup.
- Thin or unhelpful content: Add meaningful value where the page merits improvement, or remove offending material. Avoid replacing one low-value pattern with another.
- Cloaking or deceptive redirects: Remove the behavior and inspect relevant WordPress templates, CMS settings, plugins and server rules for its source.
- Other spam behavior: Compare the action with actual site practices, including content and user-generated areas, and correct the issue wherever it occurs.
Google’s manual actions guidance describes actions and remediation expectations. Its policy examples include cloaking, doorway abuse, keyword stuffing, link spam, scaled content abuse, scraping and site reputation abuse; read the current spam policy rather than assuming that every traffic decline is a spam violation.

- In Search Console, open the Manual Actions report and confirm that the relevant issue has been corrected across the affected scope.
- Select Request Review.
- Explain the specific issue, what you changed and the outcome. Include concrete examples, such as bad content removed and useful content improved, or links you had removed and those you could not remove, as relevant to the action.
- Wait for Google’s decision. Do not send duplicate requests while one is pending; monitor Search Console messages and the email associated with the property.
Google describes reconsideration requests as a process for a corrected manual action or security issue, not a general request to restore rankings. See its Search Console documentation for the relevant reporting and review workflow.

How long recovery can take
Google says most reconsideration reviews take several days or weeks, while link-related reviews may take longer. That is an estimate for review, not a promise of ranking recovery. Separately, Google says changes may take days or several months to affect Search systems and recommends checking again after a few weeks. After a spam update, automated systems may take months to recognize compliance. A link spam update can also remove ranking benefit previously associated with spammy links, and Google says that benefit cannot necessarily be regained. There is no official fixed timetable or guarantee that cleanup will restore previous positions or traffic. As Google Search Central puts it in Debugging drops in Google Search traffic: “There is no guarantee that changes you make to your website will result in noticeable impact in search results.”
