Warn your contacts using another channel, then register your number again in the official WhatsApp app with the six-digit SMS or call code. Entering that code signs the other user out. If an unfamiliar two-step-verification PIN blocks you, WhatsApp’s documented recovery path requires a seven-day wait before you can sign in without that PIN. Once you are back in, remove unknown linked devices, secure the account, and check the phone for malware or other account changes.
Do these things first
A takeover is an active impersonation risk. The person controlling the account can send messages to your individual chats and groups, so containment matters even before you regain access.

- Warn contacts through another channel. Use a phone call, text message, email, or another account to tell friends, family, colleagues, and group members that your WhatsApp account was taken over. Tell them not to send money, passwords, verification codes, or other information in response to messages from the account.
- Open only the official WhatsApp app. Do not use a website, an unofficial modified client, or a person who promises paid recovery. Never give anyone an SMS code, phone-call code, two-step-verification PIN, passkey, or backup credential.
- Re-register your phone number. Enter the same number in WhatsApp and request the six-digit code by SMS or phone call. Type the code into the official app yourself.
- Check whether an unknown two-step-verification PIN appears. If you never created that PIN, the attacker may have enabled two-step verification. Re-registration with your six-digit code still logs the other device out, but the documented instructions require a seven-day wait before you can sign in without the unknown PIN.
- If the code cannot arrive, secure the number first. Contact your mobile carrier through its official channel to investigate a lost SIM, an unauthorised number transfer, or a service interruption. The recovery material establishes that you must control the number, but there is no single carrier process that applies everywhere.
Keep the warning message factual. Do not accuse a particular person unless you have independent evidence. The immediate goal is to stop payments and prevent contacts from trusting new requests.

Why re-registering works
WhatsApp’s security guidance says, “If you’ve lost access to your account, re-register your phone number.” Registration binds the account to the phone number and a new six-digit verification code. Trinidad and Tobago’s Cyber Security Incident Response Team explains the result plainly: “Once you enter the 6-digit SMS code, the individual using your account is automatically logged out.”

This is why you should not spend the first hour arguing with the impersonator or trying random recovery websites. The decisive control is delivery of the code to the phone number. If you can receive the code, enter it in the official app as soon as possible. If you cannot receive it, work on restoring control of the number before repeatedly attempting WhatsApp registration.
A successful registration does not by itself prove that the phone is clean. It restores account access, but you still need to inspect linked devices, account security settings, the WhatsApp installation, and the rest of the phone.
Step-by-step account recovery
1. Warn people who may be targeted
Make a list of the people and groups that may have received messages during the takeover. Contact them outside WhatsApp and tell them to ignore requests from your account until you confirm that it is secure. Ask anyone who sent money or disclosed information to contact the relevant financial institution or service immediately; do not promise that a payment or disclosure can be reversed.

A code sent to their own phone is not a way to help you recover your account; it can be used to take over theirs.
2. Register the number in the official app
- Update or install WhatsApp from your phone’s official app store.
- Open WhatsApp and choose the option to register or verify the account.
- Enter the phone number that was attached to the account, including the correct country selection.
- Request the six-digit verification code by SMS or, when offered, by phone call.
- Enter the code directly into WhatsApp. Do not read it to another person or type it into a link sent in a message.
If the code is accepted, the other user is logged out. Continue with the post-recovery checks below rather than assuming the job is finished.
3. Deal with an unfamiliar two-step-verification PIN
Two-step verification is separate from the six-digit registration code. A scammer who gained temporary access may have turned it on and created a PIN you do not know. When WhatsApp asks for that PIN, do not guess repeatedly and do not use a recovery service that asks for payment or credentials.

The cited recovery instructions state that you must wait seven days before signing in without the unknown PIN. Your six-digit registration still logs out the other device, so complete registration with the code even when the PIN remains an obstacle. During the waiting period, keep warning contacts through other channels and protect the phone number and email accounts associated with it.

When the waiting period has passed, follow WhatsApp’s in-app sign-in prompts. If the app presents a different message or a different waiting period, follow the current instructions shown by WhatsApp rather than a third-party guide.
4. Restore control if the code never arrives
Failure to receive the code can indicate a simple delivery problem, a phone-service outage, SIM loss, or a number transfer that you did not authorise. Contact the carrier using a verified telephone number, website, or shop listed by the carrier itself. Ask the carrier to investigate whether the number is still assigned to your SIM and whether a transfer or replacement occurred.
There is no universal carrier script or timeline established for this situation. Follow the carrier’s identity checks and wait until you can reliably receive calls or SMS messages on the number. Then return to the official WhatsApp registration flow. Do not hand the number, SIM, or account credentials to an alleged recovery agent.
Choose the right recovery path
Four conditions determine what happens next: whether you still control the number, whether WhatsApp requests an unknown PIN, whether unknown linked devices remain, and whether the phone itself may contain malware.

What to do immediately after access returns
Remove every unknown linked session
In WhatsApp, open Settings → Linked Devices. Review the device list and log out every entry you do not recognise. If you are unsure about an entry, log it out; you can link a trusted device again later. This step matters because a linked session can let someone continue reading new messages and replying even after you believe the takeover has ended.

Take a screenshot of the list only if you need a record for your own incident notes, and avoid sharing screenshots that reveal phone numbers, names, or message previews.
Turn on your own two-step verification
Open Settings → Account → Two-step verification and create a PIN that is not reused elsewhere. Add a recovery email if the current WhatsApp app offers that option. Use an email account that you control and protect with its own strong password and multi-factor authentication. Do not disclose the WhatsApp PIN or email recovery information in response to an unsolicited message.
Consider a passkey
WhatsApp may offer a passkey as another sign-in method. Meta describes passkeys as using a fingerprint, Face ID, or the phone’s screen-lock code. A 2026 Meta newsroom article reports more than one billion passkeys across Meta services. Availability and the exact menu wording can vary by device and app version, so use the passkey option only when it appears inside the official WhatsApp settings or sign-in flow.
Update WhatsApp and remove unofficial clients
Install the latest WhatsApp version offered by the official app store. Remove modified or unofficial WhatsApp clients. WhatsApp Engineering warns that unofficial clients can contain malware and describes Device Verification as blocking suspicious attacker connections while allowing the victim to use the account uninterrupted. An update cannot undo a completed takeover by itself, but it reduces the chance that a known weakness or malicious client remains in use.
Inspect the phone and other accounts
Look for applications you did not install, newly granted accessibility permissions, notification access, device-administrator access where applicable, and unfamiliar changes to the email account associated with recovery. Also check for unexpected screen-lock or biometric changes.
If malware is suspected, run a reputable device-security scan. From a clean device, change passwords for email, cloud storage, banking, social networks, and any service that could reset another account. Do not change all of those passwords on a phone you suspect is recording keystrokes or displaying fraudulent prompts.

What the scammer can and cannot read
WhatsApp says that past conversations stored on your phone cannot be read by someone who accesses the account on another device. A takeover can still be damaging: while it continues, the intruder can read and reply to new messages and post in groups. They can impersonate you, ask contacts for money, and use current conversations to make requests appear believable.
The distinction is important. Re-registering protects the account going forward and ends the other user’s session, but it does not make fraudulent messages disappear from other people’s phones. After recovery, tell contacts which messages were not from you and ask them to report or block the impersonating account or number where appropriate.
How to notify contacts after recovery
Send a short correction through a channel your contacts already trust. For example:
“My WhatsApp account was taken over. I have recovered it. Messages sent before [time or date] asking for money, codes, or personal information were not from me. Please ignore them and tell me if you responded.”
Do not include a verification code, PIN, passkey, password, or a link to a recovery service. Contact group administrators separately if the scammer posted in groups, so they can remove fraudulent messages where the group’s tools allow it and warn members.
Troubleshooting common recovery problems
“The scammer is still messaging people.”
Finish number re-registration in the official app. Entering the six-digit code logs the other user out. If you cannot obtain the code, the issue is number control, not a missing third-party recovery tool; contact the carrier through its official channel.
“WhatsApp asks for a PIN I never set.”
Treat it as possible attacker-enabled two-step verification. Complete the six-digit registration and observe the documented seven-day wait. Do not guess the PIN, pay a stranger, or disclose any other account code.
“I registered again, but an unfamiliar device is listed.”
Open Settings → Linked Devices and log out every unrecognised device. Then enable your own two-step verification and review the phone for suspicious software or permissions.
“I recovered the account, but the phone behaves strangely.”
Unfamiliar apps, accessibility permissions, notification access, or email-account changes can indicate a broader compromise. Run a reputable device-security scan. Use a clean device to change important passwords and secure the email account used for recovery.

“Someone says they can recover it for a fee.”
Do not use them. The safe recovery route is the official WhatsApp app, your mobile carrier’s official support channel when number control is in doubt, and your own device-security tools. No legitimate helper needs your six-digit code, two-step PIN, passkey, or backup credential.

- Important passwords changed from a clean device if malware is suspected.
- Contacts told which messages were fraudulent and asked to report or block the impersonating account.
A takeover is resolved only when you control the number, the other session is logged out, the account’s security settings belong to you, and the phone used to access WhatsApp is trustworthy.
