Then choose the recovery path that matches what happened: a crash before saving calls for the app’s recovery or unsaved-file feature; overwritten text calls for version history; a file that will not open calls for a backup or repair; and a missing project calls for checking the app’s and storage provider’s available copies. Recovery is possible only if the work exists in a recovery file, saved version, or backup.
First, protect the manuscript that still exists
- Pause changes. Don’t keep editing, saving over, or restoring into the suspect copy. If you suspect the storage device itself is failing, minimize writes and seek qualified data-recovery help rather than running repair utilities against the source.
- Make a separate copy. If the file or project can still be copied, copy it to another location before troubleshooting. For project-based apps, preserve the whole project and its associated folders; don’t extract or move individual files unless the app’s guidance says to.
- Keep recovery candidates separate. Open or inspect candidates without replacing the only current copy. When possible, save recovered work under a new name.
These precautions matter because recovery actions can replace current content. Establish which copy you are looking at before accepting a restore prompt.

Choose the recovery route that matches the problem
| What happened | Start here |
|---|---|
| The app closed before recent changes were saved | Reopen the app and inspect its Document Recovery or recovered-files pane; then check its unsaved-document feature. |
| Saved content was overwritten or changed | Inspect the document’s version history or the app’s earlier saved versions. |
| The file exists but will not open | Check backups first, then use the app’s documented repair or text-recovery options on a copy. |
| The project or document is missing | Check app backups and any available cloud or device version history. Availability depends on where and how the project was stored. |
Recover work after a crash or unsaved edit
Microsoft Word: check Document Recovery
After an unexpected close, Word may show a Document Recovery pane when it launches again, if recovery material is available. Microsoft says entries show dates and creation times; compare them and open the candidate that contains the latest passage you remember before saving it separately. See Microsoft’s Word recovery instructions.

Word: find a document that was never saved
In Word, go to File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents. Open the candidate and use Save As to create a separate saved file. This route is for a document that was never saved; for an existing document whose saved content was overwritten, inspect version history instead.

Recover an earlier saved version
Word
For a previously saved document, go to File > Info > Manage Document and inspect any version identified as closed without saving. Compare its contents with the current file before restoring. Microsoft’s guidance for recovering an earlier Word version covers this version-recovery route.
Google Docs
On a computer, open the document and use Last edit or File > Version history > See version history to inspect earlier versions. You need edit permission to browse them. Choose a version and inspect who changed it and what it contains. You can restore that version or make a copy of it; copying is safer when you want to examine a candidate without replacing the current document. Google describes the options in its version history guidance.

Apple Pages
In Pages for iCloud, choose Browse All Versions to preview earlier versions before deciding whether to restore. Restoring replaces the current version, and collaborators see the restored version. On a Mac, use File > Revert To > Browse All Versions; you can browse older versions and copy text or objects into the current document rather than replacing it. Apple explains restoring a Pages document in iCloud and browsing earlier versions on Mac.
If the file will not open, try backups before repair
A damaged file and unsaved work are different problems. First look for an intact copy in the app’s backups or version history. If you find one, open a copy and check its contents before making it the working manuscript.

Repair a Word document on a copy
Microsoft documents Open and Repair and Recover Text from Any File as options for a damaged Word document. Work from a copy, leave the original untouched, and save any recovered content as a new file. Text recovery may not preserve formatting or all document data. Microsoft’s file-corruption troubleshooting guidance also describes Notepad as a fallback; treat extracted text as a partial recovery, not a restored novel.
Check writing-app backups carefully
Ulysses
Ulysses provides Browse Backups for its local standalone library backups. Its current support guidance lists these retention schedules: macOS keeps hourly backups for the last 12 hours, daily backups for the last seven days, and weekly backups for the last six months; iOS keeps hourly backups for the last six hours, daily backups for the last five days, and weekly backups for the last two months. Ulysses says the app must have been open for at least five minutes for an automatic local backup to be created. These backups are local to each device, do not sync between devices, and exclude External Folders. Uninstalling the app or reinstalling the device deletes the local backups. See Ulysses’ backup instructions for current details and its recommendation to keep regular manual backups externally.

Scrivener
Scrivener 3’s Mac and Windows manuals describe automatic backups and restoring an earlier project from them. Automatic and manual backups rotate older copies out, so a long-running backup routine does not guarantee that every historical version remains available. Follow the manual for your platform and version rather than applying a path or click sequence meant for another setup: Scrivener user manuals.
Compare candidates before choosing one
Use the candidate’s timestamp as a clue, not the sole test. A newer file may be incomplete or damaged, while an older one may contain the last intact copy of the whole project. Check these points:
Best Value
- This dual-tip stylus has a 0.24-inch fiber tip and a 0.27-inch clear disc tip, with a lightweight aluminum body for a comfortable grip. 6.18" Long, 0.52 Oz
- High-precision transparentdisc tip, clear and thin, offers the best visual reference when marking, ensuring accurate and lag-free operation
- Magnetic cap design: The two caps magnetically attach to both ends of the stylus, optimally protecting both tips from damage and loss
- Compatible with All Touch Screen Devices such as iPad, iPhone duo stylus, Smartphones, Tablet and Laptops, Fit For nintendo switch 2 stylus,Fit for stylus for switch 2
- Friendly Reminder: The stylus pen is designed to replace fingers. No battery, no Bluetooth connection, ready to use. When using certain apps on the iPad, please disconnect the active pencil or adjust the settings within the app. For more details, please refer to the APP Setup Guide.
- Recency: Does the timestamp fit the crash or edit, and does the file include the latest passage you remember?
- Completeness: Does it contain the whole novel, or just one document or extracted text? Check chapters, notes, comments, metadata, and project structure where relevant.
- Location: Is the candidate app-local, stored on the device, in cloud version history, or in a separately maintained backup? These are different copies, not interchangeable guarantees.
- Restore behavior: Will restoring replace the current version, or can you make a separate copy first? Pages for iCloud replaces the current shared version on restore; Google Docs allows copying an earlier version.
- Coverage and retention: Does the backup include linked or external folders, and could rotation have removed older copies?
After selecting a candidate, open it and check the actual manuscript before treating it as recovered. Save or export it under a new name where the app allows.
If no recovery copy appears
Check the recovery pane, unsaved-document area, version history, and app or device backups that apply to your setup. If none contains the missing work, there is no universal way to reconstruct writing that was never saved or synced. Avoid assuming an undelete or repair tool can recreate it; the available recovery options depend on what the app or storage system retained.
Make the next recovery less fragile
- Use the writing app’s native recovery and version-history features, but don’t rely on synchronization as the only backup. Ulysses describes iCloud as synchronization and recommends Time Machine or manual external backups.
- Keep dated backups separate from the live manuscript, and periodically open a backup copy to confirm that it is usable.
- For project-based apps, retain more than one generation and understand how backup rotation works, so a damaged recent state does not leave only unusable copies.
- Export a readable manuscript periodically, such as DOCX, RTF, or plain text when the app supports those formats. An export can preserve readable content even when it does not preserve the full project structure or every feature.
Microsoft recommends that Microsoft 365 subscribers store files on OneDrive or SharePoint and use AutoSave. That is a Microsoft recommendation, not a guarantee against corruption or mistaken edits; keep an independent backup as well. See Microsoft’s recovery guidance.
