Recovering a mainframe batch job starts with identifying the failed layer, not with resubmitting the job. A JES2 spool-volume failure, an application data-set error, and a program abend have different recovery paths. Preserve the job and system evidence, check whether JES2 still has usable SYSOUT, then apply the documented spool-volume response only if the failure is actually in JES2. Decide whether to restart or rerun the application from its own checkpoint and incident procedures.
For a JES2 spool-volume incident, the decisive operator choices at $HASP853 are GO for a potentially recoverable volume, PURGE for a permanently damaged volume, and QUIT to terminate JES2. Those choices have very different consequences, so do not issue one until the volume state and the value of the jobs allocated there are understood.

First identify what actually failed
“Output or storage error” is too broad to determine a safe recovery command. On z/OS, separate the incident into four questions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Is the failure in the JES2 spool subsystem or a spool volume?
- Is an application data set unavailable, damaged, full, or locked?
- Did the program itself abend or return an error while producing output?
- Is the site using JES2, or a different job-entry subsystem and procedure?
JES2 stores job input and output through spool. SYSOUT is allocated to spool so it can be processed later, which means a spool problem can affect output even when the application’s own data sets are healthy. Conversely, a damaged application data set is not repaired by a JES2 spool command. The IBM procedure covered here is for JES2 spool-volume failures; it is not a universal response for every storage message or for every JES implementation.

Evidence to capture before changing state
Record the job name and job ID, the failing step, system messages, return code or abend information, the affected DD statement or output class, and the time and system where the failure occurred. Preserve JES2 messages and operator replies. Note whether the message names a spool volume, JES checkpoint or spool I/O, or an application data set. This record lets the storage, JES2, and application owners work from the same facts and prevents a destructive command from erasing the information needed to diagnose the incident.
How JES2 spool and SYSOUT affect recovery
JES2 uses spool volumes to hold job input and output between execution and output processing. A batch step can complete while its SYSOUT remains on spool awaiting printing, transmission, viewing, or another disposition. Therefore, “the job finished” does not necessarily mean its output has been safely copied elsewhere. Likewise, “the output is missing” does not prove that the program must be rerun: output may be held, queued for processing, retained, or restricted from your view.
IBM documents that JES2 halts paths to a spool volume in error when data is next requested. A failure may consequently appear when a later request touches the volume rather than at the instant the original job step ended. For an I/O request that fails for another reason, IBM directs the operator to use $Z SPL to halt the affected volume. Use your site’s authority and incident process before issuing that command; stopping a volume changes what jobs and output JES2 can access.
Step 1: determine whether usable output still exists
Do not regenerate a long-running job until you have checked the job’s JES2 output. Use the site-authorized SDSF workflow or the JES2 OUTPUT command to inspect held and output queues. IBM describes OUTPUT processing as allowing authorized personnel to view or copy held SYSOUT, release it for processing, change its output class or destination, or delete it.

What to inspect
- Whether the job appears in an output or held queue.
- Which SYSOUT data sets are present and whether they are complete.
- The output class, destination, and current disposition.
- Whether output is still on the affected spool volume.
- Whether an automatic purge has already removed it.
Access is not automatic. User-ID authority and the output’s security label can restrict viewing, copying, releasing, changing, or deleting it. If the job belongs to another owner or carries a more restrictive label, ask an authorized operator or security administrator to perform the inspection rather than attempting workarounds.
Copy before you alter
If the output is available and business policy permits, copy it to an approved destination before changing its class, releasing it, or deleting it. A copy gives the application owner something to validate while the JES2 incident is investigated. Do not assume that a displayed line count or queue entry proves every SYSOUT record is intact; have the owner verify headers, trailers, control totals, and any application-specific completion markers.
Step 2: recover a JES2 spool-volume failure
The spool-volume procedure is an operator action, normally coordinated with the storage and application teams. During an all-member warm start, IBM documents $HASP424 and $HASP853 messages and asks the operator to choose a response. The choice depends on whether the device can be recovered and whether the jobs allocated on it must be examined.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Response | When it applies | Immediate effect | What happens next |
|---|---|---|---|
GO |
The volume may be recoverable, or its contents must be examined. | JES2 mounts the volume inactive. | Jobs allocated on that volume remain unavailable until an operator starts the volume. After examination or repair, use the site-approved start procedure, such as $S SPL, to activate it. |
PURGE |
The volume is permanently damaged and its allocated jobs cannot be recovered from it. | JES2 removes jobs that have any space allocated on the damaged volume. | Those jobs and their spool-resident output are no longer available through JES2. Treat this as destructive and verify the damage assessment first. |
QUIT |
JES2 must be terminated rather than continuing the warm-start decision. | JES2 ends. | Follow the site’s restart and outage procedure; this is not a way to preserve or recover individual job output. |
GO and PURGE are not interchangeable levels of caution. GO keeps the volume inactive so operators can investigate a potentially recoverable device. PURGE removes every job with space allocated there, even if only part of that job’s spool footprint is on the damaged volume. IBM specifically warns that PURGE is for a permanently damaged volume.

Find which jobs use the volume
After choosing GO and, where appropriate, starting the volume for examination, IBM documents these displays:
$D JOBQ,SPL=(V=volser)displays jobs currently allocated on the spool volume identified by its volume serial.$D A,ALL,X,DEV,V=volserdisplays active jobs with space on that volume.
Replace volser with the actual volume serial. Save the command output with the incident record. The displays identify exposure; they do not establish that an application can be safely restarted or that every SYSOUT data set is complete.
Step 3: decide whether to restart, resubmit, or wait
JES2 recovery tells you what happened to spool access. It does not tell you where a particular business program can safely resume. A job may have updated external files, sent messages, posted transactions, or produced partial reports before the error. Blind resubmission can duplicate those effects.
Use the application’s checkpoint and restart design
Consult the program runbook and the application owner for the supported restart point. Confirm whether the job has checkpoints, restart parameters, idempotent steps, reconciliation reports, or a documented “rerun from the beginning” rule. If no checkpoint or restart behavior is documented, treat the restart position as unknown and obtain an explicit decision from the owner rather than inventing a generic restart step.

Separate output recovery from business recovery
There are two independent objectives:
- Recover or preserve the job’s SYSOUT and JES2 metadata.
- Complete the business processing without lost or duplicated updates.
Copying a held report may satisfy the first objective while leaving the application transaction incomplete. Conversely, rerunning a job may recreate a report while producing duplicate updates. Record the decision for each objective separately in the incident ticket.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand output disposition before assuming retention
JES2 output disposition controls whether SYSOUT is held, processed, retained, purged, or written and then purged. IBM documents normal and abnormal dispositions, and the post-processing behavior differs by setting. The current setting, not the JCL label you remember, determines whether output should still be on spool.
| Disposition | Operational meaning | Use when the policy requires |
|---|---|---|
HOLD |
Keep output held for operator or user action instead of normal release. | Inspection or an explicit release decision before processing. |
KEEP |
Process the output and retain it on spool afterward. | Normal processing plus continued spool retention. |
LEAVE |
Leave the output on spool rather than completing normal output processing. | Preserving it for later handling under site policy. |
PURGE |
Discard the output. | When retention is not required and deletion is authorized. |
WRITE |
Process or write the output, then purge it from spool. | When delivery is complete and spool retention is not wanted. |
The normal disposition applies when the step completes normally; the abnormal disposition applies when it ends abnormally. A job that abends can therefore have a different retention result from a successful run. Check both settings and the site’s output-processing policy before concluding that an absent SYSOUT must be regenerated.
Changing a disposition
Authorized operators can change held output’s disposition through the documented OUTPUT/operator workflow. They can also release held output, alter its class or destination, or delete it. Make the change only after recording the original value and confirming that the receiving system, printer, transmission queue, or archive is ready. A disposition change can make output disappear from a held queue or trigger processing, so treat it as a state change, not a harmless display operation.

Failure branches and safe responses
The message names a JES2 spool volume
Stop and classify the volume event. Preserve the messages, identify the volume serial, and involve the JES2/storage operator. If the event reaches $HASP853, choose GO, PURGE, or QUIT according to recoverability and the approved incident procedure. Use the display commands to identify affected jobs before anyone considers a rerun.
The message names an application data set
Do not use spool-volume commands as a substitute for data-set recovery. Capture the DD name, data-set name, allocation and access error, failing step, and application return or abend information. Follow the data-set owner’s backup, catalog, serialization, and restart runbook. JES2 output inspection can still tell you whether a partial report exists, but it will not repair the application data.
The job abended but spool is healthy
Inspect SYSOUT first, because the diagnostic output may already be complete enough to identify the cause. Check the abnormal output disposition and whether the job’s output was held, retained, written, or purged. Then use the program’s documented restart or correction procedure. Do not infer a safe restart point from the job step number alone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The output queue is empty
Verify the job ID, owner, system, output class, and security authority. An empty view may reflect filtering or access restrictions rather than deletion. Ask an authorized operator to check all relevant output and held queues and to confirm the disposition history. If the output was set to PURGE, or was written and then purged under WRITE, JES2 cannot display it afterward; obtain it from an approved downstream destination or regenerate it only after the application owner approves.
Preventive configuration and operational controls
Use spool fencing to limit blast radius
IBM describes JES2 spool fencing as a way to allocate a job’s track groups from a specified number of spool volumes. The goal is to limit the impact of permanent damage to one volume. Fencing is an administrator-level design choice: it must be sized for workload, capacity, and performance, and it does not restore data from a failed device. Review it during capacity and resilience planning rather than waiting for an incident.
Make retention intentional
- Define which reports must be held for human validation.
- Use retention settings that match the time needed to reconcile downstream processing.
- Document who may release, reclassify, copy, or purge output.
- Ensure abnormal dispositions preserve diagnostics long enough for support staff to act.
- Record where output goes after a
WRITEaction, since spool retention ends after processing.
Keep a tested incident runbook
The runbook should identify the JES2 and storage on-call roles, the authority required for OUTPUT and spool commands, the message-handling procedure for $HASP424 and $HASP853, the approved warm-start and volume-start sequence, and the application owners who approve restart. Include examples using the site’s actual volume naming and security model, but do not hard-code a restart point that belongs to only one application.
Quick Recap
Operator checklist
- Record job name and ID, failing step, messages, return or abend information, affected DD or output class, system, and time.
- Classify the failure as JES2 spool, application data set, program execution, or another subsystem.
- Confirm that the site uses JES2 and identify the affected spool volume if one is named.
- Use authorized SDSF or OUTPUT functions to inspect held and output queues before resubmitting.
- Check user-ID and security-label authorization, current disposition, and whether output was already purged.
- If this is a spool-volume event, coordinate the response to
$Z SPLor the warm-start prompt and document whyGO,PURGE, orQUITwas selected. - With
GO, examine allocations using$D JOBQ,SPL=(V=volser)and, for active jobs,$D A,ALL,X,DEV,V=volser. - Copy or preserve usable SYSOUT before changing its class, destination, disposition, or queue state.
- Ask the application owner to approve a checkpoint restart, full rerun, or no rerun; do not infer safety from spool status.
- After recovery, reconcile output, external updates, and any jobs purged because of permanent volume damage.
