How to Recover a Long-Form Draft After an Editor Crash or Accidental Deletion

If a draft disappeared, first reopen the editor and look for a recovery prompt or pane. Save any promising recovered copy under a new name before editing it. Then choose the next route based on what happened: crash recovery for unsaved work, version history for changed text in a saved file, Trash for a deleted cloud file, or a device backup for a local file. None can restore work that was never captured or backed up.

First, identify what was lost

Before trying recovery options, work out whether the document was never saved, recent edits vanished after a crash, text was overwritten, or the entire file was deleted. Also note which editor and operating system you used, where the file was stored, which account was active, and roughly when the loss happened. Those details determine which recovery route can help.

  • Never saved: look for the editor’s unsaved-document or crash-recovery feature.
  • Recent edits missing: check crash recovery, then version history if the document had been saved.
  • Text overwritten or removed: use the document’s version history to find the earlier content.
  • Whole file deleted: check the relevant cloud service’s Trash or a device backup.

If you find multiple recovery candidates, compare their timestamps. Preserve the best one separately; do not continue editing the only copy. Avoid choosing a close-without-saving option while a recovered version is still open.

How do I recover an unsaved Word document or work after Word crashed?

After an unexpected crash

Reopen Word and check the Document Recovery pane for available copies. Microsoft says recovery entries may show save or recovery times, which can help you choose the most recent candidate. Open it and save it promptly under a new name. Microsoft describes the feature this way: “When Office app closes unexpectedly before you save your most recent changes, Document Recovery automatically opens the next time you open the Office app to help you get your file back.” Microsoft Support: Recover your Word files and documents.

  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)

Do not select “Don’t Save” when closing a recovered file you still need: Microsoft warns that doing so deletes its AutoRecover file. Recovery may contain an earlier state rather than every edit made before the crash.

If the document was never saved

In supported Word versions, go to File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents. Open a likely candidate, then use Save As to keep it as a separate file. Menu availability varies by Word version and platform. Microsoft’s Office file backup and recovery guidance covers the relevant conditions.

If a saved document is missing recent changes

For a saved file, inspect File > Info and the document management or version options. If it is stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, open Version History and compare earlier versions before restoring one. AutoSave and cloud version history depend on eligible Microsoft 365 apps, cloud storage, and applicable feature settings; they do not guarantee that every edit immediately before a crash was retained. See Microsoft’s instructions for recovering an earlier version of a Word file.

How do I get back a deleted Google Doc or restore overwritten text?

If text changed or disappeared inside a Google document

Open the document’s version history, review an earlier version, and restore it or copy the missing passage into the current document. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides have document version history; this is distinct from file versions for other file types stored in Drive. Google’s activity and file-version guidance says a Drive file version may be permanently removed after 30 days or when 100 newer versions exist unless it is kept. That policy should not be assumed to govern Google Docs’ document history.

If the entire file was deleted

Open Google Drive’s Trash, find the file, and restore it while it remains there. Google says files stay in Trash for 30 days before automatic permanent deletion, unless Trash is emptied sooner. Follow Google’s deleted-file recovery instructions.

If the file is not in Trash, confirm that you are using the right Google account. Then check Drive activity, sharing and access state, and search for unorganized files: the document may have been moved or become inaccessible rather than deleted. Google notes that some permanently deleted files may meet conditions for recovery; consult its instructions for finding lost files in Drive for account-specific guidance, without assuming recovery is available.

What to do after a LibreOffice Writer crash

Reopen LibreOffice and follow a Document Recovery prompt if one appears. The Document Foundation says LibreOffice tries to save AutoRecovery information for open documents after a crash “if possible”—it is not a guarantee. Save a recovered document to a new file before resuming work. See the official Automatic Saving help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LibreOffice also provides an option to create a backup copy when saving, and a Versions feature that can retain earlier document versions under specified editing, saving, and closing conditions. These options help only if they were enabled or the relevant version was preserved. The Document Foundation explains the feature in its Versions documentation.

Which recovery route should you try?

What happened First place to look Important limitation
Editor crashed while work was open The editor’s recovery pane or prompt It may contain only the last captured recovery state.
Unsaved Word document File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents, in supported versions Menu availability varies by version and platform; a candidate may not exist.
Changes to a saved Word file Version History, especially for eligible files in OneDrive or SharePoint Cloud storage, app eligibility, and feature settings matter.
Overwritten text in Google Docs The document’s version history Google Docs document history is distinct from Drive file-version rules for other file types.
Deleted file in Google Drive Drive Trash Trash retention is 30 days, or less if Trash is emptied sooner.
LibreOffice Writer crash Document Recovery prompt AutoRecovery is attempted “if possible,” not guaranteed.

When recovery is not possible

A previous saved version can restore earlier text but may not include the latest edits. AutoSave and AutoRecover operate periodically or under specific conditions; neither proves that the newest draft state exists. Cloud Trash also has retention limits. If no recovery candidate, prior version, Trash copy, or backup contains the missing writing, there is no universal method established here for reconstructing it. Generic file-recovery software should not be treated as a reliable way to restore unsaved text that an editor never captured.
