If someone changed your World of Warcraft password, replaced the account email, removed your authenticator, or emptied your characters, start with Blizzard’s official Account Recovery service. Secure the computer that you use to play, then submit a Blizzard support ticket describing the compromise and any missing items. Do not use a third-party “recovery” service or give your login details to anyone who contacts you.
Blizzard does not promise a particular response time, restoration scope, or result for an individual case. The sequence below separates what you can do immediately from what requires Blizzard’s review.

Follow this order after a suspected compromise
- Open Blizzard’s official Battle.net Account Recovery page. Choose the recovery option that matches your problem, such as a password reset, authenticator removal, or an account unlock.
- Secure the computer. Scan for malware, keyloggers, and viruses before filing the support ticket. If a malicious addon may be involved, run a security scan and change the password immediately.
- Submit a support ticket through Blizzard. State that the Battle.net account was compromised and list the changes you observed, including missing items.
- Wait for Blizzard’s review. The cited guidance does not state a guaranteed timeline or promise that every item will be restored.
- Harden the account after access returns. Set a unique strong password, add the Battle.net Authenticator, and consider a passkey.
Use only pages reached by navigating to Blizzard or Battle.net yourself. An unsolicited email, direct message, or in-game whisper can imitate Blizzard while attempting to steal your credentials.
Identify the problem before choosing a recovery option
The recovery portal presents several routes. Matching the route to the symptom avoids spending time on the wrong form.
#1 Best Overall
- World of Warcraft Game
- Includes Expansion Packs: The Burnings Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, and Mists of Pandaria

| What you see | Official problem wording or route | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Your password no longer works | “Password changed” | Start a password reset in Account Recovery. If the registered email is still yours, follow the reset instructions there. |
| You can no longer use the account or believe someone took control | “Account compromised” | Use Account Recovery, secure the computer, and then open a support ticket describing the takeover. |
| Your characters or account inventory appear empty | “All items missing” | Include the missing items and any other unauthorized changes in the compromised-account ticket. Blizzard’s guidance does not guarantee that particular items will be restored. |
| The authenticator blocks sign-in | Authenticator-removal option | Use the recovery portal’s option for removing an authenticator. Do not send an authenticator code to a person who offers to help through an unofficial channel. |
| The account is locked | Account-unlock option | Choose the unlock route in the live recovery portal and complete the requested verification. |
| You forgot the account email | Email-recovery route | If phone notifications were already set up, Blizzard says the recovery tool can help recover the registered email. Otherwise, use Customer Support for help locating the account. |
| You forgot a security question | Customer Support | Blizzard directs users with a forgotten security question to Customer Support rather than guessing repeatedly. |
Use Blizzard Account Recovery safely
1. Navigate to the official portal yourself
Open a new browser tab and type the Blizzard or Battle.net address you normally use, or use a bookmark you created previously. Do not follow a recovery link in an unexpected message. Blizzard identifies phishing as an attempt to impersonate the company to obtain login details or infect a computer.
On the live recovery portal, look for the options that cover a compromised account, authenticator removal, password help, and account unlocking. Labels and page layout can change because these are live services, so follow the current wording rather than an old screenshot.
2. Try a password reset when the password is the only known problem
If you still control the registered email and only the password appears to have changed, begin with the password-reset option. A reset restores your ability to authenticate only if the attacker has not also taken over the email account or changed the account’s recovery information.
Use a password that has never been used for another service once you regain access. Do not reuse the old password while investigating the incident; reused email-and-password combinations are one of the exposure methods Blizzard warns about.
3. Recover the email or locate the account when necessary
If you do not remember the registered email but had phone notifications configured, Blizzard says Account Recovery can be used to recover it. If you forgot the security question or need help locating the account, Blizzard points to Customer Support.
Use the official forms and provide only the information they request. A person who asks for your password, authenticator code, or full account details outside Blizzard’s support flow is not part of the recovery process.

4. Handle an authenticator or lockout through the matching option
The portal includes an option to remove an authenticator and another to unlock a locked account. Choose the option that describes your sign-in barrier instead of repeatedly trying random credentials. Repeated failed attempts do not establish that the account was hacked, and they do not replace the official verification process.

Blizzard’s hacked-account sequence specifically puts computer security before the support ticket. A password change made on an infected computer can be captured again, so treat the device as part of the incident.
Run a security check
- Scan the computer for malware, keyloggers, and viruses using current security software.
- If you suspect a malicious player-made addon, run the scan and change the account password immediately, as Blizzard advises.
- Keep the browser and security software current before signing in again.
The support guidance does not prescribe one particular scanner or claim that a single scan proves a computer is clean. The objective is to remove software that could record a new password or session.
Review addons and downloads
Download addons only from trusted sites. Blizzard warns against running an executable during addon installation. An addon package that asks you to launch a separate program is not something to approve merely because it promises a feature or an update.
If you cannot establish that the computer is secure, use a different, trusted device for the recovery steps and support ticket while you investigate the original machine. This is a safety measure; Blizzard’s official requirement is that you secure the computer before submitting the ticket.

Describe the compromise clearly
After the computer is secured, open the support ticket through Blizzard. Say plainly that the Battle.net account was compromised. Include the symptoms that led you there:
- Whether the password, email address, authenticator, or account access changed.
- When you first noticed the problem, using your best available estimate.
- Any characters, gold, equipment, or other items that appear to be missing.
- Any suspicious messages, websites, addon downloads, or services you used shortly before the incident.
Use the literal problem language shown in Blizzard’s support flow when it fits: “Account compromised,” “All items missing,” or “Password changed.” Clear labels help the ticket describe the right issue without implying a restoration result.
Understand what the ticket can and cannot establish
Blizzard says support reviews the case and restores access, but the cited guidance does not promise a specific response time, a particular restoration scope, or a successful outcome in every individual case. It also does not state that every missing item will be returned. Keep the ticket factual and answer any follow-up questions through the same official support channel.
Do not open parallel cases with people who advertise account recovery. Blizzard’s guidance recommends its own recovery and support routes; it does not recommend competing recovery services.

Replace the password, do not merely recover it
Set a new password that is unique to Battle.net and difficult to guess. Blizzard recommends a strong password made from a mix of numbers, letters, and symbols. A password used on another website remains a risk even if the WoW account itself has been recovered.
Add the Battle.net Authenticator
Blizzard recommends adding the Battle.net Authenticator after recovery. Its security guidance also says phone notifications may help recover access if there is a problem with the authenticator. Configure the protection through the official account settings, not through a link sent in a message.
Consider a passkey
The hacked-account guidance says a passkey can provide additional protection. Treat it as an extra safeguard after you regain control, not as a substitute for cleaning an infected computer or replacing a reused password.

Check for unauthorized changes
Review the account for the changes you reported in the ticket, including missing items and altered security settings. If something remains wrong, add the new information to the existing official case rather than handing your credentials to someone offering an unofficial fix.
How World of Warcraft accounts are commonly exposed
Blizzard lists several recurring exposure paths. Knowing which one may apply helps you remove the cause instead of repeating it.
Reused email and password combinations
If another site is breached and you used the same email and password for Battle.net, an attacker can try that combination against the game account. Use a distinct password and change it anywhere else you reused the compromised one.
Phishing websites and messages
Phishing messages pretend to come from Blizzard and ask for login information or direct you to software that can infect the computer. Check the address before entering credentials. Blizzard advises avoiding links that do not lead to blizzard.com or battle.net. When in doubt, close the message and navigate to the official site manually.
Infected or deceptive addons
Player-made addons can be distributed through untrusted locations or bundled with malicious software. Blizzard recommends downloading addons only from trusted sites and never running an executable during installation. If an addon asked for a separate installer or program, treat that as a possible source and scan the computer.

Unauthorized gold sellers and leveling services
Blizzard warns against non-Blizzard gold sellers and leveling services. Giving a service your login details can expose the account, and a message advertising one may itself be a phishing attempt. Do not trade account access for promised gold, power leveling, or faster progress.

Account sharing and sign-ins on another person’s computer
Do not share login information. Blizzard also advises against logging in on another person’s computer. A shared device may contain a keylogger, saved credentials, or a browser session that someone else can use.
Recovery branches for common situations
You can still log in, but something looks wrong
Change the password immediately from the official account interface, then secure the computer and add the Authenticator. Document unauthorized changes and submit a ticket if items, settings, or contact information were altered. Remaining access does not prove that an attacker has been removed.
The password and email were both changed
Do not keep guessing credentials. Use the compromised-account route in Account Recovery. If you had phone notifications enabled, use the email-recovery capability Blizzard describes; otherwise, Customer Support can help with account-location questions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe authenticator was added or replaced by someone else
Select the portal’s authenticator-removal option. Complete the official verification and avoid anyone who asks you to reveal a code so they can “remove” it for you.
The account is locked after suspicious activity
Use the account-unlock option in the live recovery portal. Once unlocked, replace the password and add the recommended account protections only after the computer has been scanned.
Characters or inventory are empty
Choose the “All items missing” wording where available and list the observed losses in the support ticket. Blizzard’s published guidance places missing items within hacked-account support, but it does not promise that every item will be restored or specify how long review will take.
Prevent a second compromise
- Use a unique Battle.net password with a mixture of letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Keep your browser and security software updated.
- Download addons only from trusted sites and reject executable installers.
- Inspect a website’s address before entering credentials; prefer navigating to Blizzard or Battle.net yourself.
- Ignore unsolicited messages that request login information or offer urgent account help.
- Avoid non-Blizzard gold sellers and leveling services.
- Never share your login information or sign in on another person’s computer.
- Keep the Battle.net Authenticator enabled and consider a passkey.
A practical checklist
- Confirm whether the symptom is a password change, compromised account, missing items, authenticator problem, or lockout.
- Open the official Battle.net Account Recovery page directly.
- Use password reset, email recovery, authenticator removal, or account unlock as appropriate.
- Scan the computer for malware, keyloggers, and viruses.
- Review suspicious addons, downloads, links, and account-sharing activity.
- Change the password immediately if a malicious addon or credential exposure is suspected.
- Submit one detailed Blizzard support ticket after securing the computer.
- Record unauthorized changes and missing items in that ticket.
- After access returns, set a unique strong password, add the Authenticator, and consider a passkey.
Blizzard’s official recovery route is the safest starting point because it is the channel that can verify ownership and review account changes. Treat every promise of instant restoration, guaranteed item recovery, or unofficial assistance as unverified.
