A hacked account does not automatically give someone access to every account your household uses. But if the compromised account is your email, an intruder may be able to use password-reset messages to target other services; reused passwords create another route. Regain control first, then close those access paths and warn anyone who may have received fraudulent messages.
How one account can put others at risk
Email accounts are especially important because other services may send password-reset links or recovery messages to the inbox. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that someone with access to your email may be able to reset passwords for other accounts. That is a possible route of access, not proof that those accounts have been entered. Reusing a password creates a separate risk: a password exposed on one service may work on another.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) illustrates how an email takeover can be followed by access attempts against social media, banking, and retail accounts. What an intruder can actually reach depends on the accounts’ recovery settings, password use, and security protections.

Signs an account may be compromised
Look for changes or activity you did not initiate, including:

- An unexpected password change or a change to the recovery email address or phone number.
- A login alert or active session from a device or location you do not recognize.
- Being unable to sign in with a password you believe is correct.
- Messages, posts, or purchases you did not make.
- Friends or family saying they received an unusual message from you, especially a link or request for money.
Check alerts through the service’s official app or website rather than clicking a link in an unexpected security message. The FTC’s hacked-account recovery guidance and its October 2024 alert describe common warning signs.
Recover access and shut down the intruder’s routes
If you can still sign in, act promptly. If you are locked out, use the provider’s official account-recovery process. Do not use a recovery link from an unsolicited message or search result that you cannot verify.

- Use a device you trust. Start from a clean, updated device. The FTC advises making sure computer security software is up to date and scanning the computer when recovering a hacked email or social account.
- Recover through the provider. Open the service’s official website or app directly and follow its current recovery instructions. Steps vary by provider; if recovery details have been changed, use the provider’s process for a compromised or inaccessible account.
- Change the password. Once back in, create a strong password that is not used on any other service. If you reused the compromised password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too.
- End sessions you do not recognize. Use the account’s security settings to sign out other devices or sessions, where that option is available.
- Turn on multifactor authentication. Enable it for the recovered account and review the available methods. CISA recommends MFA because a stolen password alone is then less likely to be enough for access.
- Verify recovery details. Check that the recovery email address and phone number are yours and have not been replaced.
- Inspect account activity and settings. For email, review forwarding rules, sent and deleted folders, and unfamiliar filters or connected access. For social accounts, check recent posts, messages, contacts, and sessions. Remove changes you did not make.
- Warn people who may have been contacted. Tell friends, family, and other relevant contacts not to click unexpected links or respond to requests for money from the account.
The FTC’s recovery steps for hacked email and social media accounts provide additional guidance; the exact menus and recovery options depend on the provider.
Check other accounts and respond to any loss
After securing the compromised account, review other services that used the same password or rely on that email address for recovery. Prioritize financial, shopping, health, and social accounts, and check for unfamiliar sign-ins, changed details, transactions, messages, or orders. Change reused passwords to unique ones and use each provider’s official recovery process if you find unauthorized access.

- If a bank or other financial account may have been accessed, contact the institution promptly through a known, official channel.
- If personal information was stolen, the FTC directs consumers to IdentityTheft.gov for a personalized recovery plan.
- If you suspect cybercrime, consider reporting it through the relevant official channels. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center provides account takeover guidance.
Protect the household from another takeover
Use a different password for every account
Unique passwords limit the damage if one service is compromised. A password manager can generate and keep track of strong, unique passwords; the FBI recommends using a reputable password manager in its online safety guidance. The FTC’s October 2024 alert advises aiming for 12 to 15 characters or using a passphrase. Its broader protection guidance recommends at least 15 characters if you create your own passwords. These are recommendations from the FTC, not guarantees that a password will prevent compromise.
Enable MFA on important accounts
Turn on multifactor authentication for email and financial accounts first, then other important services where it is available. Depending on the account, methods may include text or email codes, an authenticator app, biometrics, or a security key; not every service offers every method. The FTC says authenticator apps or security keys are more secure options than text or email codes. Choose a method the account supports and keep its recovery options current. CISA’s MFA guidance explains why adding another factor helps protect accounts.

Keep devices and home Wi-Fi maintained
Install software updates on household devices and secure the home Wi-Fi network. The FTC notes that malware on a device connected to the network can spread to other devices connected to it. These steps reduce device and network exposure; they do not replace unique passwords and MFA.
