Do not send the swap again just because the destination balance is empty. First find the origin transaction hash, confirm its status on the source chain, read the exact bridge or swap provider’s tracker, and inspect the destination wallet on the correct network. Only then follow that provider’s documented retry, refund, or support procedure.
A cross-chain swap can be waiting at several different stages: the wallet may never have broadcast the transaction, the source-chain transaction may be confirmed while the bridge is still processing it, a destination call may have failed after an intermediate token arrived, or a refund may be settling. The safe recovery action depends on which stage actually occurred.

What a “stuck” cross-chain swap can mean
The word pending is only a label shown by one wallet or application. It does not prove that funds left your wallet, that the bridge received the deposit, or that the destination transaction failed. Treat the transfer as an investigation with separate checkpoints:

- Origin confirmed, provider not credited: the source transaction succeeded, but the bridge or swap service has not indexed or accepted it yet.
- Provider processing: the deposit is recognized and is waiting for a relayer, settlement bundle, challenge period, or destination execution.
- Destination completed: the output is present, but your wallet is viewing the wrong network or token contract.
- Intermediate asset delivered: the bridge leg completed while a later swap failed, leaving a wrapped or different token.
- Refund or retry required: the provider has entered a documented recovery state rather than silently losing the funds.
These states are provider-specific. A status name used by one bridge must not be treated as a universal state machine for every route.

Before touching the transaction, record the facts
Write down the details while the original activity screen is still available. You will need them both for your own checks and for support.
- The wallet or application used to start the swap.
- Origin and destination network names, including the network version shown in the wallet.
- Input token, amount, and the destination token you expected.
- The destination address and the approximate submission time.
- The origin transaction hash, sometimes called a transaction ID or tx hash.
- The bridge, aggregator, or swap provider named in the route details.
- Any deposit ID, request ID, order ID, or error text shown by the provider.
Do not infer a destination transfer from a wallet balance displayed on the wrong network. A token can be absent on one network and present on another, and some wallets hide tokens until the correct contract is added.
Step 1: Confirm whether the origin transaction actually happened
- Open the original app’s activity or progress view. Copy the exact origin hash rather than a quote ID or a destination hash.
- Search that hash on the native block explorer for the origin chain. Use the explorer reached from the chain or provider you selected; do not rely only on the wallet’s spinner.
- Classify the result. It should be clearly marked confirmed, pending, failed, or not found. A missing hash can mean the wallet never broadcast the transaction, not that the bridge lost it.
- Check the sender, recipient, token contract, amount, and network. A confirmed transaction sent from a different address or to a different contract is a different problem from a delayed bridge transfer.
If no transaction is confirmed
When the explorer shows no confirmed origin transaction, do not submit a replacement until you know whether the wallet is still trying to broadcast it. Wallet and chain mechanics differ, so first inspect the wallet’s pending queue and error message. Synapse’s transaction support guidance says that transactions which do not initiate on the origin chain return an error and leave the assets under the user’s control. It recommends checking the available balance and gas before trying again. Its documentation describes roughly 30–60 minutes as a typical resolution period for certain origin-chain initiation problems; that estimate does not apply to an already submitted cross-chain transfer.
If the origin transaction is pending
Leave it alone until the chain reports a final result or the chain’s own replacement procedure is clearly applicable. Replacing or speeding up a transaction is chain-specific and can create another transaction with different parameters. A bridge support agent can tell you whether a pending source transaction is safe to replace; a generic “speed up” instruction is not universal.
If the origin transaction failed
Read the explorer’s failure reason and verify that the token balance and gas balance are still present. A failed source transaction normally does not transfer the deposit to the bridge. Correct the underlying issue before retrying, and use a fresh quote if the original quote has expired.

If the origin transaction is confirmed
Do not send a duplicate bridge deposit merely because the destination token is not visible. Keep the hash and move to the provider’s tracker. The source-chain confirmation proves only that the origin action was recorded; it does not prove that the provider filled the route.
Step 2: Read the exact provider’s status tracker
Open the official status page for the provider named in the route. Search by the origin hash, deposit ID, or request ID exactly as the provider specifies. A tracker is more authoritative for recovery than a generic wallet status.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Provider or product | Status or behavior documented | What the user should do |
|---|---|---|
| Across deposit tracker | Search by transaction hash or deposit ID. States include pending, filled, expired, and refunded. |
pending means the deposit is still being processed. filled indicates the route was filled. expired is not the same as refunded; wait for settlement. refunded means the return reached the configured refund address. |
| 0x Cross-Chain API | Recovery values include refund_pending, refund_succeeded, manual_action_required, no_actions_required, and failed. |
Continue polling for refund_pending. A supported automatic retry can appear as manual_action_required without requiring a user signature. Treat failed as terminal for that status endpoint and contact 0x support with the response zid. |
| Synapse | Its progress menu and explorer links can show an origin confirmation that the app has not indexed yet. Completed destination transfers expose a destination hash from the progress menu. | Use the linked explorers, then check the destination wallet on the destination chain. Transfers that initiated but do not complete are directed to Synapse support. |
Across says its tracker data updates about every 10 seconds, but its documentation recommends polling refunds less frequently because settlement takes hours rather than seconds. Frequent refreshing does not accelerate a bridge, and automated polling can obscure the difference between a stale interface and a real status change.
The 0x labels above belong to that API’s recovery object. Across and Synapse use different workflows, and another provider may use entirely different names. Always follow the instructions attached to the provider and route you actually used.
Step 3: Inspect the destination wallet and explorer
- Switch the wallet’s network selector to the destination chain.
- Confirm that the connected address is the same destination address recorded before submission.
- Open the destination-chain explorer for that address and inspect recent token transfers.
- Check the token contract, not just the ticker symbol. Wrapped assets and tokens with similar symbols can be different contracts.
- If the provider supplies a destination transaction hash, open it directly and read its receipt and event logs.
A token may be present but hidden by the wallet interface. Add the provider’s documented token contract only after verifying the network and contract address from a trusted source. Never add a random token contract suggested by an unsolicited message.

When a later step failed
Chained routes can bridge one asset and then perform a swap on the destination chain. If the swap call fails, the bridge leg may still be complete. Uniswap’s developer guidance says to inspect the last step marked COMPLETE, then use that step’s output token and chain to identify what the user holds. The recoverable asset may therefore be an intermediate token rather than the final token shown in the original quote.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why the refund may not be the original token
Recovery is tied to the bridge step, not necessarily to the first asset you selected. A route can wrap ETH to WETH or swap ETH to USDC before sending the bridge deposit. If the bridge leg later needs a refund, the returned asset can be WETH or USDC. A failed multi-step route can also leave an intermediate asset on one chain while another step is waiting elsewhere.
0x documents this behavior by basing the recovery token on the bridge step’s sell or buy token. Synapse notes that a sudden increase in slippage can result in an intermediate asset being delivered on the destination chain; that asset can be swapped on the destination chain if you choose to do so and the market and fees are acceptable.
Before claiming or moving anything, verify four fields in the provider’s recovery details:
- the chain on which the asset currently exists;
- the token contract and decimal format;
- the configured refund address;
- the amount returned, including any documented fee or price impact.
Do not assume a refund will return the exact original token, chain, or amount.

How long should you wait?
There is no industry-wide timeout for a cross-chain swap. Timing depends on the source chain, bridge design, relayer liquidity, settlement cadence, challenge periods, destination congestion, and the route’s own swap steps.
| Timing statement | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|
| About 10 seconds | Across documentation’s approximate tracker update interval, not a refund-completion time. |
| About 1.5 hours between proposed settlement bundles | Across documentation’s settlement cadence; an expired deposit can remain escrowed while waiting for a bundle. |
| Several hours for an expired-deposit refund | Across explains that settlement, a challenge period, and canonical bridge delays occur before the on-chain refund executes. |
| 30–60 minutes | Synapse’s typical resolution period for certain origin-chain initiation problems, not a promise for an initiated bridge transfer. |
| A few minutes | Uniswap Labs’ estimate for transfers using the World Chain bridge, updated February 21, 2025; the same page warns that bridging can take longer than an ordinary transaction. |
Use these figures only within their stated product and route. If the provider publishes a longer expectation for your route, follow that expectation. If the tracker remains incomplete beyond the provider’s documented window, or changes to a terminal error, escalate with the evidence you collected.

The source transaction never initiated
Keep the assets in your wallet, resolve the balance or gas problem identified by the wallet or explorer, and retry only after confirming that no deposit was created. A new attempt should use a current quote and the correct destination address.
The source transaction confirmed but the provider shows no deposit
Check that the hash belongs to the provider’s deposit contract and that the token and amount match the route. Use the provider’s official support channel if its tracker cannot locate a confirmed deposit. Include the hash rather than sending another deposit.

The provider shows pending
Keep monitoring at the provider’s recommended interval and inspect the destination wallet. Do not sign an unrelated transaction presented as a shortcut. Pending means processing, not necessarily failure.
Best Value
The provider shows filled but the wallet is empty
Switch to the destination network, verify the address, and search the destination explorer. If a destination hash exists, inspect its token events. A wallet display problem or hidden token is more likely than a missing bridge transfer when the destination transaction is confirmed.
The provider shows expired
For Across, expired means the deposit is still escrowed while refund settlement proceeds. Wait for the tracker to change to refunded and verify the configured refund address. Across says this process can take several hours; do not treat the expired label as an immediate refund.
The provider shows refund pending
For the 0x Cross-Chain API, continue polling according to its documented flow. Do not submit a second deposit while the refund is pending. When the state becomes refund_succeeded, verify the recovery transaction and token on-chain.
The provider shows manual action required or failed
Read the provider’s instructions exactly. In 0x’s documented automatic-retry paths, manual_action_required can indicate that 0x is retrying a destination call and that no user signature is needed. A failed status is terminal for that endpoint; contact 0x support with the response zid and the original transaction details.
A recovery transaction hash exists, but funds are not visible
A hash alone is not proof that recovery is complete. Open it on the correct chain, confirm that it succeeded, and check the token transfer to the configured address. Then follow the provider’s final status. If the provider still marks the case incomplete, use its official support path rather than attempting an independent “rescue.”
What to send to official support
Contact the provider named by the route, not a random account in a chat or social-media reply. Your first message should contain:
- origin transaction hash and, if available, destination or recovery hash;
- source and destination chain IDs or exact network names;
- token symbols, contract addresses when known, and amount;
- destination address and approximate submission time in UTC;
- the provider tracker’s current status and its exact error text;
- deposit, request, order, or response identifiers;
- screenshots only after removing seed phrases, private keys, API secrets, and unrelated balances.
Synapse directs users to its support channel for transfers that initiated but did not complete. For integrations using 0x or Uniswap developer tooling, support documentation may also request request or plan IDs, payload details, chain IDs, transaction hashes, and timestamps. Those integration fields are not universal consumer requirements, so provide them only when the provider’s own support form asks for them.

Safety rules that prevent a second loss
- Never share a seed phrase or private key with support, a bridge operator, or anyone claiming to “unlock” a refund.
- Do not sign an unsolicited recovery transaction. Compare the domain, connected network, recipient, token, and amount with the provider’s official instructions.
- Do not approve a new token-spending allowance merely because a message says it will release a stuck transfer.
- Do not retry after an origin confirmation until the provider tracker and destination explorer show that no usable deposit, output, or refund exists.
- Do not assume a status label, token symbol, or recovery hash has the same meaning on another bridge.
A compact decision checklist
- Locate the original activity record and copy the origin hash.
- Confirm the hash on the origin-chain explorer.
- If absent or failed, resolve the wallet or gas issue before retrying.
- If confirmed, open the exact provider tracker and record its state.
- Switch the wallet to the destination network and inspect balances and token transfers.
- Identify the last completed route step and the token it produced.
- Wait through the provider’s documented settlement or retry window; do not use a generic timeout.
- When the state is terminal or the documented window has passed, contact official support with hashes, chains, amounts, time, and status details.
- Verify any refund or retry on-chain and against the provider’s final status before considering the case closed.
Bottom line
Most safe recoveries begin with evidence, not another transaction: prove what happened on the origin chain, identify the provider’s state, inspect the destination chain for output or intermediate assets, and then follow that provider’s retry or refund process. Some transfers never leave the wallet; others require hours of settlement; and some terminal failures need provider support. Because the recovery token, chain, timing, and action vary by route, no responsible guide can promise an instant refund or a universal fix.
