Remove or disable the suspicious extension first, then restore the homepage, startup pages, new-tab behavior and search engine it changed. If the settings return after a restart, treat the problem as possible unwanted software on the computer rather than only a browser preference. Check the device for unfamiliar software, scan it with reputable security tools, and use the browser’s reset or refresh function only after reviewing exactly what that operation removes. A message saying the extension is managed needs separate handling because it may reflect a legitimate work or school policy, security software, local policy, or malware.

What changed settings usually mean

Unexpected browser behavior can be the visible part of an unwanted extension or another program. Google lists a homepage or search engine changing without permission, redirects to unfamiliar pages, unwanted extensions returning after removal, and persistent pop-ups or toolbars among possible signs of unwanted software. Those symptoms establish that something changed your browser; they do not, by themselves, prove that saved passwords or other accounts were accessed.

Before changing anything, record the unfamiliar extension’s name, publisher, permissions and the settings you found. A screenshot or written note helps if the extension comes back, if a security product needs the details, or if an administrator has to identify a legitimate policy. Do not install another extension advertised as a fix while the browser is still under unwanted control.

Use this recovery order

  1. Remove or disable the extension from the browser’s own extension manager.
  2. Repair the visible settings: homepage, startup pages, new-tab page, pinned tabs and default search engine.
  3. Check the computer for unwanted applications and scan it if the change persists, returns or affects more than one browser.
  4. Reset or refresh the browser only after reading the operation’s data-retention details.
  5. Investigate management policies if removal is blocked or the browser says an organization controls the extension.

Perform the steps in that order. Resetting a profile can remove customizations while leaving the program that keeps reinstalling the extension untouched.

Step 1: remove or disable the suspicious extension

Firefox

  1. Open the Firefox menu.
  2. Choose Extensions and themes, then select Extensions.
  3. Find the unfamiliar add-on, open its menu and choose Remove.

Mozilla says that removing an unwanted toolbar may require restoring the homepage, New Tab and search preferences afterward. If Remove is unavailable, disable the add-on as a temporary workaround and continue to the policy and unwanted-software checks below. An extension installed by another program may need that program removed or Mozilla’s advanced removal procedure.

Chrome

Open Chrome’s extensions manager from the browser menu, choose Extensions or Manage extensions, locate the unfamiliar item and select Remove. If you are unsure which item is responsible, start with extensions installed immediately before the behavior began and those with permissions to read or change data on websites, manage downloads or alter search settings. Disable one suspect at a time if you need to identify the cause, then remove the confirmed item.

Edge

Open the Edge menu, choose Extensions, select Manage extensions, and use the control for the unwanted extension to turn it off or remove it. Microsoft documents these controls and notes that some extensions can change the default search engine. If the control is unavailable or says the item is managed, do not attempt random registry edits; use the policy checks described later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If removal fails

  • Disable the extension if the browser allows it, then restart the browser and see whether the setting still changes.
  • Check whether another installed application, security product or organizational policy installed it. Removing only the browser entry may not remove the installer.
  • On a work or school computer, ask the administrator before deleting a managed extension. Removing a required security or productivity add-on can violate policy or break access.

Step 2: restore every setting the extension changed

Repair the settings manually even after removal. Check all of these locations because an unwanted extension can alter more than the search box:

  • Homepage and the button that opens it.
  • Pages opened at startup, including a list of unfamiliar URLs.
  • New-tab page and its search provider.
  • Default search engine and any unfamiliar search-engine entries.
  • Pinned tabs, startup tabs and extensions that control new tabs.
  • Content permissions, notification permissions and other site settings that were changed unexpectedly.

Chrome settings

Open Settings. Review Search engine for the address used in the address bar, then review On startup for startup pages. Check the new-tab behavior and pinned tabs as well. Remove unfamiliar search engines and startup URLs rather than merely selecting a different default if the unwanted entries remain.

Firefox settings

Open Settings, then review Home for homepage and new-window behavior and Search for the default search engine and search shortcuts. Remove an unfamiliar homepage or search provider and restore the options you normally use. Mozilla specifically warns that these preferences may need repair after an unwanted toolbar is removed.

Edge settings

Open Settings and check the pages for startup, home and new tabs, followed by the search settings. Confirm that the address-bar provider is one you selected and delete unfamiliar startup pages or search entries where Edge permits it. Microsoft’s documented extension controls support removal and disabling; the material available here does not establish a current, universal Edge reset sequence, so do not substitute an invented menu path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: check the computer outside the browser

If a changed setting returns after a restart, an extension reappears, several browsers show the same redirect, or unfamiliar windows and toolbars continue, inspect the computer. Google’s Chrome guidance says to check for unwanted programs before resetting Chrome. Mozilla likewise treats recurring Firefox changes after restart and unwanted toolbars as possible signs of malicious software.

Review recently installed applications

Look for software installed around the time the browser changed: unfamiliar utilities, download managers, “search” tools, fake updates and programs whose publisher you cannot verify. Use the operating system’s normal uninstall controls, and obtain replacement installers only from the software maker’s official site. Removing a program you do not recognize can be disruptive, so record its name and publisher first and leave work-managed software for an administrator.

On Windows, review Settings → Apps → Installed apps and sort by install date when available. On macOS, inspect the Applications folder and use an included uninstaller when one exists. These locations are starting points, not proof that every unfamiliar item is malicious; security software, drivers and corporate tools may be legitimate.

Run a security scan

Use Microsoft Defender or another reputable, up-to-date antivirus product for a full scan when an Edge extension claims organization management on a device that is not managed, or when the extension returns after removal. Mozilla also recommends scanning the system with security software when unwanted changes persist. Follow the scanner’s quarantine or removal instructions and restart when it requests one. Do not install a second “cleaner” extension inside the affected browser as a substitute for a system scan.

When to stop and get help

Seek qualified support if the scanner reports a serious infection, the browser cannot stay open long enough to change settings, or a personal computer remains policy-controlled after unwanted software is removed. Avoid deleting registry entries or other system policy data as a routine first step; Microsoft warns that registry changes are risky.

Step 4: decide whether to reset or refresh

A reset is broader than removing one extension. It can undo profile customizations, permissions and search settings, but it is not a guaranteed device cleanup. First make sure important bookmarks, passwords and other profile data are available through your normal backup or sync arrangement, then read the browser-specific effects below.

Chrome: Restore settings to their original defaults

  1. Open Chrome Settings.
  2. Choose Reset settings.
  3. Select Restore settings to their original defaults.
  4. Review the confirmation and choose Reset settings.

Google says this operation changes profile settings including the default search engine, homepage and tabs, new-tab page, pinned tabs, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions and themes. Google also says saved bookmarks and passwords are not deleted or changed. The operation is not a complete profile wipe: some settings, including fonts and accessibility options, are not deleted. Recheck the browser after the reset and scan the computer if the unwanted behavior returns.

Firefox: Refresh Firefox

  1. Open the Firefox menu and choose Help.
  2. Select More troubleshooting information.
  3. Choose Refresh Firefox and confirm.

Mozilla says Refresh creates a new profile while retaining bookmarks, browsing history, download history, passwords, cookies, web-form autofill information and the personal dictionary. It removes extensions and themes, website permissions, modified preferences, added search engines, some storage and security-device settings, download actions, toolbar customizations and user styles. Export or record any customization you need before confirming.

Refresh availability depends on the Firefox version and profile-management configuration. Mozilla notes that the feature can be unavailable under the newer profile-management system unless Firefox is updated to version 150 or later. If the command is missing, update Firefox through its normal update mechanism and investigate whether a policy or managed profile is controlling it instead of repeatedly reinstalling extensions.

Edge: use documented extension controls

For Edge, the documented material supports opening Extensions → Manage extensions, then turning off or removing the unwanted extension and checking search and startup settings. It does not provide a sourced, current Edge reset sequence. Do not claim that a Chrome or Firefox reset path applies to Edge; follow the version-specific Microsoft support instructions available for the affected installation if a broader repair is required.

What a managed-extension message means

A browser message such as Managed by your organization is a status, not proof of malware. Firefox says management can come from a work or school administrator, security software or a local policy. On an organizational device, contact the administrator and ask which policy installed or controls the extension. Removing it yourself may be blocked intentionally.

On a personal device, identify whether security software or another locally installed program created the policy. Microsoft’s Edge guidance says an extension that claims organization management on an unmanaged device can sometimes be malware and recommends a full scan with Microsoft Defender or another reputable antivirus program. Treat registry modification as an advanced, risky action rather than a first-line fix; preserve the policy details and use official troubleshooting guidance or qualified support.

If the problem returns: follow the symptom

The extension returns after restart

Remove it again only after noting its name and then inspect installed applications and run a full scan. A returning extension suggests an installer, policy or other unwanted software is still active. Resetting the browser alone may remove the visible entry temporarily without removing that source.

The homepage changes but the extension is gone

Check startup pages, homepage and new-tab settings separately. An unwanted URL can remain in more than one location, so remove it from each list and confirm the default search engine. Restart the browser to verify the values stay fixed.

Only one browser is affected

Concentrate first on that browser’s extension manager and profile settings. If the same URL, toolbar or policy appears in multiple browsers, prioritize the computer-level application and security scan before spending time resetting each profile.

Removal is blocked

Record the exact management message and determine whether the computer belongs to an employer or school. Ask the administrator on a managed device. On a personal device, review security software and local policy sources, scan the system and avoid unsupported registry edits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Removal versus reset: choose the narrowest effective action

Action What it addresses Data or customization impact When to use it
Disable the extension Stops the add-on while preserving its entry for identification. Usually leaves profile settings and other extensions unchanged. When you need temporary containment or the browser will not allow removal.
Remove the extension Deletes the browser’s installed add-on entry. Does not necessarily undo homepage, search, permission or startup changes. First-line action for an unwanted, removable extension.
Chrome reset Restores specified profile settings, including search, homepage, tabs, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions and themes. Saved bookmarks and passwords remain; some settings such as fonts and accessibility are not deleted. After checking the computer and when manual repair is incomplete.
Firefox Refresh Creates a new profile and removes extensions, themes, modified preferences, permissions and several customizations. Retains bookmarks, history, downloads, passwords, cookies, autofill and personal dictionary; removes the listed customizations. When Firefox profile changes are extensive and you have reviewed the retention list.
System scan and unwanted-program removal Addresses software outside the browser that may reinstall an extension or enforce settings. May quarantine or remove applications; review detections before confirming. When changes persist, return after restart or affect multiple browsers.

Verify the browser before normal use

  1. Restart the computer and open the affected browser.
  2. Confirm the extension is absent or intentionally disabled.
  3. Open a new tab, the homepage and a startup window to verify that no unfamiliar page appears.
  4. Search from the address bar and confirm the selected provider and result behavior.
  5. Review pinned tabs, notification permissions and other settings you documented before recovery.
  6. Run another scan if the extension, redirect or management message returns.

Do not infer that an account was compromised solely because browser settings changed. The available browser guidance does not establish whether a particular extension accessed saved credentials or other sensitive data. If you do see unauthorized account activity, handle that as a separate incident: use the affected service’s account-recovery process from a known-clean device and follow its security notifications.

Prevent a repeat installation

  • Install extensions only when you understand the publisher, permissions and purpose.
  • Remove add-ons you no longer use and review the extension list after installing desktop software.
  • Keep the browser, operating system and security software updated through their normal update channels.
  • When a download asks to add a search tool, toolbar or browser helper, decline unless it is required and trusted.
  • On managed computers, use the organization’s approved software process instead of bypassing policy.

The practical boundary is simple: browser controls repair the profile; a system check addresses the program or policy that may be changing it. Use both when the symptom survives a restart.
