When the connection is back, reconnect the encoder with the correct stream URL and key, confirm playback and audio from another device, and tell viewers where to find updates if the interruption was visible. A network failover may restore internet access, but it does not guarantee that an encoder session will resume by itself.
Restore the stream in this order
This sequence uses YouTube Live as the platform example. Controls and whether an existing event can resume vary by platform and stream configuration, so do not promise viewers a seamless continuation until you have verified it.

Check whether internet service is back
Check power and status lights on the modem or fiber ONT and router. Look for an ISP outage notice, and test whether the encoder computer or hardware can reach the internet. If practical, connect the encoder by Ethernet temporarily: if that works while Wi-Fi does not, the problem is likely local wireless connectivity rather than the ISP link. Avoid repeatedly restarting network equipment while the provider service is still down.

Check the encoder and the route out to the platform
If the local connection works, inspect the encoder preview, selected audio and video sources, and any CPU, device, or connection errors. Compare what the encoder shows and sounds like with YouTube’s live dashboard and stream-health indicator. A clean local preview only confirms what the encoder is producing; it does not prove YouTube is receiving it. If the encoder output looks healthy but YouTube is not receiving it, test the outbound internet connection, as YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises.

Reconnect the encoder
Start or reconnect the encoder using the stream destination already configured for the event. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, that destination uses a stream URL and stream key configured in YouTube Studio. If the encoder reports a key-related start error, check that it has the current key copied from the correct YouTube stream. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a public screenshot, shared document, or on-screen capture.
Wait for YouTube’s preview or health status to indicate that it is receiving the feed. Then open the stream as a viewer on a separate device and check both picture and sound. The encoder preview and the viewer playback test different parts of the path.

Update viewers if the interruption was visible
Use the stream page, the school’s usual communication channel, or a brief slate to say that the live feed is being restored and where viewers can check for updates. Do not say that live instruction is continuing if the video is only a fallback message or recorded material. Whether the same event destination can resume, and how its page behaves after a disconnect, depends on the service and configuration.

Record the incident
Note when the outage began and ended, provider status, equipment restarted, encoder messages, any stream-key changes, and when viewers regained playback. Keep the record with the stream’s operating notes so the school can identify recurring failure points and make the next response easier to follow.
Find which part of the stream failed
A 24/7 feed depends on several layers, and the same symptom can have different causes. Check them separately rather than assuming every interruption is an ISP outage.

Prepare a backup internet path
A dual-WAN router can switch traffic from a primary internet service to a secondary connection after detecting a failure. Cellular service is one possible backup WAN, but it is a continuity option to prepare and test—not a guaranteed fix for an outage already in progress.

Check what the backup can actually do
- Independent access: The backup needs to be independent of the failed primary route. For cellular, check signal where the encoder and router are installed.
- Compatible hardware and service: Confirm that the router or modem supports the intended backup mode and carrier, and that the data plan is active.
- Data allowance: Estimate the traffic for the stream’s bitrate and the length of time it may run on cellular. Check the plan’s cap and overage terms; continuous video can consume substantial data.
- Failure detection: Confirm whether the router detects loss of internet access or only a physically disconnected cable. A modem can remain connected locally while the provider route is unusable.
- Encoder reconnection: Test whether the encoder session survives a change of network path. Router failover restores a route; it does not ensure the encoder reconnects to YouTube.
- Failback: Check whether returning to the primary service is automatic or requires configuration, and test the behavior before relying on it during a school broadcast.
ASUS documents dual-WAN failover and failback configuration, while Ubiquiti’s 5G and LTE backup guidance covers cellular backup modes and data-limit management. Their instructions apply to their respective products; check the current documentation for the specific router, modem, carrier, and plan you use.
Make platform failover settings match
If you configure a primary and backup input in YouTube, make the inputs compatible before an incident. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance says primary and backup streams need matching settings, including resolution and codec, for failover to work properly. Keep a written configuration sheet for the encoder and backup input, and test it without exposing stream keys publicly. A mismatched backup may fail even when its network connection is available.
Plan for a gap in the picture
Network failover and viewer-facing fallback address different problems. A backup internet path can restore connectivity; a platform fallback video can give viewers something appropriate to see while the feed is disconnected. Neither proves that the live encoder has recovered.

Restream documents disconnect protection that plays a selected video during a disconnection, with 5-, 15-, or 30-minute options on eligible plans. Availability and limits can change, so confirm the current plan terms and test the feature before using it for a school channel. Choose a fallback slate or video that is suitable for students and clearly indicates when the material is not live instruction.
Keep a 24/7 channel operational over time
Some services have specific guidance for long-running channels. Livestream’s guidance for 24/7 channels recommends regular restarts and describes an automatic restart option for Producer. That is service-specific advice, not a universal rule for every platform. Before adopting a restart schedule, check the current service’s stream-duration limits, archive behavior, and restart controls; a planned restart also needs a way to verify that the feed returned.

- Provider support contact and the procedure for checking a service outage.
- Equipment order and the status indicators to check before restarting anything.
- Who owns the encoder and platform logins, and who is authorized to retrieve the current stream key.
- The correct event destination and encoder settings, stored securely.
- How to verify the encoder preview, platform health, and viewer-side audio and video.
- Who will update students, staff, and families if the feed is interrupted.
- Backup connection details, data limits, and the steps to restore the primary route.
Keep credentials and stream keys out of public-facing checklists. Review the checklist after an incident and update it if equipment, account ownership, or event setup changes.
