How to Record Your Screen on a Samsung Galaxy: Complete Guide

On a supported Samsung Galaxy, screen recording takes only a few taps: open Quick settings, choose Screen recorder, select the sound mode, tap Start recording, and stop from the floating toolbar. The finished video appears in Gallery, normally under DCIM/Screen recordings.

The exact buttons depend on your Galaxy model and One UI version. Samsung says the built-in recorder is available on Galaxy devices running One UI 2 or later, but individual features such as microphone audio, drawing, selfie video and selected-area capture can differ.

Check whether your Galaxy supports Screen recorder

Samsung’s built-in recorder is intended for supported Galaxy phones and tablets running One UI 2 or later, including many Galaxy S, Z and A series devices. That does not mean every model has identical controls. Samsung maintains model-specific guidance, and a missing button can indicate either that the feature is not supported or that the button has not been added to your Quick panel.

Look at the software information on your device and compare the model and One UI release with Samsung’s support guidance. The regional support pages below are the authoritative references for the current menu names and compatibility notes:

Do not assume that a feature shown in a guide for one Galaxy generation will appear on another. Samsung’s controls and menu placement can change with the model, region and software release.

Published recording limits by software version

Software combination Samsung-published limit How to interpret it
Android 10 with One UI 2.5 Up to one hour or 4 GB This is Samsung’s stated maximum for that software combination.
Android 11 with One UI 3.0 or later No file-size or recording-time limit stated by Samsung The statement does not override available storage, battery, thermal protection or an interruption caused by the app being recorded.

These figures are Samsung’s published 2026 limits, not a promise that every Galaxy device can record indefinitely. A long capture still needs sufficient free storage and a stable device.

Record the screen from Quick settings

  1. Open Quick settings. Swipe down from the top edge of the display. On some Galaxy interfaces, swipe down a second time to expand the complete panel.
  2. Tap Screen recorder. If the tile is visible, select it to open the recording setup.
  3. Choose the sound mode. Select the option your device offers: None, Media, or Media and mic. The wording may be slightly different on another One UI release, but the choices determine whether the clip contains no sound, device media audio, or media audio together with microphone input.
  4. Tap Start recording. A countdown runs before capture begins. Use that time to return to the app or screen you want to demonstrate.
  5. Use the floating toolbar while recording. The toolbar normally provides pause and stop controls. Depending on the model, it can also expose drawing or annotation tools and a selfie-camera overlay.
  6. Stop when finished. Tap the stop control in the toolbar. The video is saved automatically and can be opened from Gallery.

The countdown is part of the normal workflow, so a recording that seems to start late may simply be waiting for that timer. If the toolbar is not in the position you expect, look for its floating control on the edge of the display; its appearance varies by software version.

What each recording option does

Sound: None, Media, or Media and mic

None records the screen without audio. It is useful for a silent walkthrough or when you plan to add narration later.

Media captures sound produced by the phone, such as game or app audio, without adding your voice through the microphone.

Samsung Galaxy A16 4G LTE (128GB + 4GB) International Model SM-A165F/DS Factory Unlocked, 6.7", Dual SIM, 50MP Triple Camera (Case Bundle), Black
  • Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
  • Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
  • Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.

Media and mic combines the device’s media sound with microphone input. Choose it when you need to explain actions while demonstrating an app or game. If your device shows only a subset of these modes, those are the modes that model and software combination supports.

Samsung documents these sound choices and related recorder controls in its Australia guide to taking screenshots and recording the screen. Audio behavior can also be affected by the app itself; protected or restricted content may not produce a usable recording.

Video quality

On supported devices, open Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder to review the available video-quality setting. Samsung does not expose the same quality choices on every model, so use the options shown on your phone rather than expecting a particular resolution or frame rate.

Higher quality generally creates a larger file, while a lower setting can be more practical for a long tutorial or when you need to share the clip quickly. Treat the displayed quality choices as device-specific; Samsung’s broad support documentation does not establish one universal specification for all Galaxy devices.

Selfie-camera overlay

Some Galaxy models let you place a live front-camera view over the screen recording. The same settings area can include a selfie-video size control. Turn the overlay on only when your face adds context, such as a reaction or spoken presentation; leave it off for a clean app demonstration. Both the overlay and its size options are optional and model-dependent.

Drawing and annotation

If the floating toolbar includes a pen or drawing control, you can mark items while recording. This is useful for pointing to a button or circling a setting in a tutorial. Because the annotation tools are live controls, the marks become part of the video; they are not a separate editable layer after export.

Full-screen and selected-area capture

Some Galaxy software releases expose a choice between recording the full display and a selected area. Samsung’s general support guidance does not promise selected-area recording on every device. If your recorder offers the choice, select the scope before starting; if it does not, the built-in tool records the screen area supported by that model.

If Screen recorder is missing from Quick settings

Add the tile to the panel

  1. Swipe down to open Quick settings, then expand the panel if necessary.
  2. Open the panel’s more-options control and choose Edit buttons. On other layouts, swipe across the available buttons and tap the + button.
  3. Find Screen recorder in the available buttons and add it to the active Quick settings area.
  4. Save or finish editing, then tap the new tile to begin a recording.

Samsung notes that the editor’s location changes by device and software release. The control may be behind a three-dot options button on one Galaxy and behind a plus button on another, so look for either editor entry rather than assuming one fixed layout.

When the tile is not available to add

If Screen recorder does not appear in the editor at all, check the exact Galaxy model and One UI version. The built-in feature is limited to supported combinations, even when a nearby model in the same product family has it. Samsung recommends looking for a screen-recording app in the Play Store or Galaxy Store when the built-in function is unavailable. A third-party app is a fallback, not evidence that your particular phone supports Samsung’s native recorder.

Where the recording is saved

After you stop, open Gallery and look for the new video. Samsung lists Internal storage > DCIM > Screen recordings as the default folder. The storage location may be changeable in the recorder settings, and the exact setting can vary by device.

If the clip is not visible immediately, wait briefly for Gallery to refresh, then check the Screen recordings album and the file-management view of internal storage. A recording made with a different app may be stored in that app’s own folder rather than Samsung’s default directory.

Important restrictions and failed captures

Copyright-protected content

Samsung cautions that copyright-protected photos or videos may not record. A black frame, missing picture or an otherwise incomplete clip can therefore be an intentional protection by the app or service, not a fault with the recorder. Do not bypass those protections; record content you are authorized to capture.

Calls and communications

Samsung Australia states that Screen recorder does not record phone, VOIP or video calls. That is regional Samsung guidance, so treat it as a documented restriction rather than a guaranteed behavior for every Galaxy model and market. Even when the screen appears to capture, call audio or video may be excluded.

Storage and interruptions

The software-version limits above do not remove practical constraints. A full storage volume, a device shutdown, a crash or an app that blocks capture can stop a recording before the expected endpoint. For a long session, clear enough internal storage first and avoid switching into a protected screen that cannot be recorded.

Troubleshoot the most common problems

The Screen recorder button still cannot be found

  • Expand Quick settings fully; the first swipe may show only a compact set of tiles.
  • Open Edit buttons or the plus-button editor and add the tile.
  • If it is absent from the editor, verify the model and One UI version against Samsung’s compatibility guidance.
  • If the native feature is unsupported, use a recording app from the Play Store or Galaxy Store instead.

The video has no sound

  • Before starting, select Media or Media and mic instead of None.
  • Use Media and mic when your voice is required; Media does not include microphone narration.
  • If the desired mode is not offered, that limitation belongs to the device or software release.
  • Remember that protected media and calls can be excluded even when a sound mode is selected.

The microphone is missing but media audio works

Restart the recording and choose Media and mic if that option appears. If the menu offers only None and Media, Samsung’s documented controls for that device do not include microphone capture through the native recorder. Do not mistake a missing option for a Gallery problem; the audio choice is made before capture begins.

  • FIT EVERYONE IN THE SHOT: Group selfies are easier on your Samsung phone with a wider front camera⁴ that captures more of the scene, so no one gets left out of the moment

The recording stops or will not reach the desired length

  • On Android 10 with One UI 2.5, Samsung states a ceiling of one hour or 4 GB.
  • On Android 11 with One UI 3.0 or later, Samsung states no file-size or recording-time limit, but storage and device interruptions still apply.
  • For a long capture, check available storage and keep the device powered sufficiently to finish.

The screen is black or an app is missing from the clip

Test another ordinary screen first. If other screens record normally, the app or media is likely enforcing copyright or capture protection. Samsung specifically warns that protected photos or videos may not record, and call capture has the restrictions described above.

The video is difficult to find

Open Gallery and check the Screen recordings album. If it is not there, inspect Internal storage > DCIM > Screen recordings and review whether your device has a different save-location setting under Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder.

Choose settings for common recording jobs

What you are recording Sound choice Optional controls Practical setup
Silent visual walkthrough None Drawing if you need to point at controls Use a quality level that keeps text legible without creating an unnecessarily large file.
App or game demonstration with original audio Media Selfie overlay only if your reaction is part of the presentation Start the countdown before opening the sequence you want to show.
Spoken tutorial Media and mic Drawing or selfie overlay when useful Make a short test recording to confirm that both media and microphone audio are present.
Content from a protected service or a call Any available mode Not applicable if capture is blocked Expect that copyright-protected material or calls may be excluded by Samsung or the app.

This table describes how to use the controls your Galaxy actually provides; it does not imply that every row’s option exists on every model.

A reliable workflow before you share the video

  1. Open the recorder settings and confirm the available sound, quality and selfie-video options.
  2. Record a short sample containing the screen activity you plan to explain.
  3. Stop and play the sample from Gallery to verify picture, media audio and microphone narration.
  4. For a longer session, check free internal storage and remember any version-specific limit.
  5. Start the final capture, use the countdown to prepare the first screen, and stop from the floating toolbar.
  6. Review the completed file in Gallery before sending or editing it.

A short test is especially valuable when narration matters: it confirms the selected sound mode on your particular Galaxy instead of relying on a menu label alone.

Key takeaways

  • The native path is Quick settings > Screen recorder > sound mode > Start recording.
  • Controls, quality choices, selfie overlays, drawing and selected-area capture vary by Galaxy model and One UI release.
  • Recordings normally appear in Gallery and use DCIM/Screen recordings as Samsung’s default folder.
  • Copyright-protected media can block capture, and Samsung Australia documents restrictions on phone, VOIP and video calls.
  • Samsung states a one-hour or 4-GB limit for Android 10 with One UI 2.5, and no stated file-size or recording-time limit for Android 11 with One UI 3.0 or later, subject to ordinary storage and device constraints.
