Use the game’s own streamer mode or music-mute setting first, then record game audio and your microphone on separate tracks so unwanted music can be removed before publishing. For graphic scenes, use any title-specific content filter, stop or pause capture around known scenes, and inspect the finished file before uploading. No recording program provides a universal guarantee that copyrighted songs or every graphic scene will be blocked automatically.
Platform detection can mute a video, but it does not grant permission to use the audio. A personal music subscription, a purchased track, or an automatic mute is not a substitute for distribution rights. Treat audio controls, visual editing, and platform monetization rules as separate parts of the workflow.

Start with the game’s own streaming controls
The most reliable place to remove licensed music is inside the game. Open the title’s audio, accessibility, or streaming settings before you begin a long session. Look for labels such as Streamer Mode, Mute Copyrighted Audio, Licensed Music, or a separate music-volume control. These options are title-specific: a setting that works in one game may not exist in another, and a generic recording application cannot add a missing in-game filter.
Check official support and license terms
Read the game’s current support page and any streaming or license language supplied by the publisher. Confirm whether the mode replaces songs, silences only selected tracks, or affects menus and cutscenes as well as normal gameplay. If the publisher gives a menu path, follow that path rather than assuming a similarly named option behaves the same way elsewhere.

Sea of Thieves: a documented mute option
Sea of Thieves documents a setting for licensed music at Game Options > Settings > Streamer Mode Support > Mute Copyrighted Audio. The same support guidance discusses hiding player names and invite notifications. It also advises avoiding the front-end menu while live because it can expose information. This is guidance for that title, not evidence that every game has an equivalent control.
Hi-Fi RUSH: replacement tracks
KRAFTON says Hi-Fi RUSH’s streamer mode replaces licensed songs with original tracks intended for streaming. The published route is Options > Gameplay > Other Settings. KRAFTON still warns that external platform policies and automated detection can affect a video, and that the mode cannot guarantee complete protection. Its exact wording is: “Streamer Mode is designed to reduce copyright risks but cannot guarantee complete protection.” See KRAFTON’s Streamer Mode Information.
Publisher guidance when no replacement mode exists
Ubisoft advises turning off in-game music when recording footage that will be posted if the game includes licensed music. That approach can leave sound effects and dialogue intact while removing the music channel, but it depends on the game’s own mixer. Check the individual title because publisher-wide guidance does not prove that every Ubisoft game uses the same menu or soundtrack license.

Design the recording so unwanted audio can be removed
In-game muting is preferable, but separate recording sources give you a recovery option when a setting is incomplete or you discover a problem after the session. The goal is to keep game audio, microphone commentary, and other applications on independently controllable tracks instead of committing everything to one stereo mix.

Choose only the sources you intend to publish
- Capture the game application rather than the entire desktop when your software supports application-level audio. This prevents music players, browser tabs, chat alerts, or notification sounds from entering the recording accidentally.
- Add the microphone as its own source. Keep its level independent so you can mute, lower, or replace commentary without changing game sound.
- Do not add a second desktop-audio source “just in case.” Duplicate sources can create an echo and can reintroduce music that you thought you had removed.
- Use a separate track for any audio you may later need to exclude. A track is an editing control, not evidence that you have permission to distribute its contents.
Use the current OBS documentation for track setup
OBS Studio’s official knowledge base indexes an Application Audio Capture Guide, a Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide, and documentation for recording console footage. Those guides are the right reference for the version and operating system you are using because interface labels and supported capture methods can change. Configure the intended output track explicitly; a file can contain several tracks while the exported or uploaded version still includes the wrong one if the mix is selected incorrectly.
Do not assume that placing music on a separate track solves the legal problem. If the track remains in the final file, or if your editor combines every track during export, the licensed recording is still present. Separate tracks provide control only when you actually mute, delete, or replace the unwanted track before publication.
Make a short local test
- Enable the game’s streamer mode or music mute.
- Start a brief local recording that includes gameplay, a menu transition, dialogue, and any area where music normally plays.
- Stop the recording and inspect every audio track with the same player or editor you will use for the final export.
- Verify that game effects and speech remain audible, the music channel is silent or replaced, and your microphone is isolated as intended.
- Check the exported file, not only the project timeline. Some editors create a combined mix during export even when the source tracks were separate.
This short check is operational insurance, not a guarantee that a later chapter or event will behave identically. Repeat it after changing the game, capture device, audio driver, or recording profile.

A PC game can often be captured directly by the recording application. A console-to-computer setup may require a compatible USB HDMI capture card, which appears as a video source in OBS documentation. The card transfers the console’s picture and sound; it does not remove copyrighted songs, grant rights, or hide graphic imagery.

When a capture card is appropriate
- Use one when the console’s output must be brought into a computer for recording or streaming.
- Confirm that the card supports the console’s video format, connection type, and resolution before relying on it for a live event.
- Route console audio into the capture source and keep microphone audio separate where the software allows.
- Run the same short test used for PC capture. Console menus, party chat, and protected video output can behave differently from ordinary gameplay.
A capture card is optional for a PC-only workflow. Buying one does not change the music license or create a visual content filter.
Prevent graphic scenes from entering the published video
Audio muting and visual moderation are different tasks. The available guidance does not establish a universal pre-capture filter that recognizes and blocks every graphic scene. Treat the process as deliberate capture planning followed by review.
Use a title-specific content filter if one exists
Check the game’s accessibility, content, parental-control, and streaming menus. A filter may reduce gore, disable dismemberment, hide blood, or alter a cutscene, but the effect and coverage vary by title. Read the description carefully: a setting that changes gameplay effects may not change a cinematic, death animation, or menu image.

Plan around known scenes
If you know that a mission, boss encounter, cutscene, or scripted death contains material unsuitable for your audience, decide in advance how to handle it. Pause or stop capture before the scene, resume after it, or record the segment separately so it can be discarded. For a live broadcast, prepare a transition screen or an alternate activity; a post-production trim cannot remove imagery that has already been shown live.

Review and edit before publication
- Watch the complete recording or use a visual scan of the timeline to locate cutscenes, deaths, executions, medical imagery, and sudden changes in content.
- Cut the scene, replace it with a neutral transition, or crop and blur only when the result remains understandable and complies with the destination platform’s rules.
- Check thumbnails, chapter markers, subtitles, and short clips as well as the main video. A removed scene can reappear in an automatically generated clip or thumbnail.
- Play the final exported file from start to finish far enough to verify that edits do not leave a few frames or an audio spike from the omitted section.
Editing reduces what you publish; it does not guarantee monetization or shield a video from every platform restriction.

Twitch scans VODs and clips for copyrighted audio and may mute portions or remove clips when its systems detect a match. A muted VOD is not automatically the same thing as a copyright strike. Rights holders can still submit a formal claim when unauthorized material remains, and detection systems can miss audio or flag it incorrectly.
Automatic muting is not a license
Twitch states that creators are responsible for their content. Buying a copy of a song or listening through a personal subscription does not authorize making that recording available in a VOD. The help page puts the point directly: “Buying a copy of the audio, whether in the form of a digital download, CD, vinyl record, or other format, does not give you permission to make the audio available in a VOD on Twitch.” Read the Twitch guidance on appealing muted audio.

If Twitch mutes audio in error, its help guidance describes an appeal process. An appeal requires you to attest that you have the necessary rights or explain why the identified audio was not present. Do not appeal merely because you purchased the track, own the game, or enabled streamer mode; those facts alone do not establish permission for the recording.

Separate copyright safety from YouTube monetization
YouTube’s gaming guidance discusses graphic gameplay and cinematics in the context of advertiser-friendly monetization. A scene may be edited to improve its suitability for advertisers while still raising separate copyright, age-restriction, or policy questions. Conversely, removing a graphic moment does not grant a license to a song in the soundtrack.
Use the current rules for the destination, audience, and video format. Check the exported file and any short-form versions separately because platform processing, clips, and thumbnails can be evaluated independently.

Troubleshoot common failures
Music is still audible after enabling streamer mode
- Confirm that the setting was saved in the correct profile and applies to the current game mode.
- Check whether the track comes from a menu, radio, downloadable content, or another application rather than the game channel you muted.
- Inspect each recorded track. The music may have entered through desktop audio, a capture-card mix, or a duplicate source.
- Remove or replace the music in the editor and export a new file. Do not rely on a platform mute to make the published version safe.
The recording has doubled or echoed audio
Look for the same device added as both application audio and desktop audio, or as both a capture source and a monitoring source. Disable the duplicate, record a short test, and verify the exported mix. Keeping one clearly named source per signal makes later review easier.
A graphic scene appears in a clip or thumbnail
Inspect the platform’s clips, highlights, chapters, and generated thumbnails, not only the edited master. Delete or replace derivative files and choose a neutral thumbnail. For future sessions, stop capture before the known scene rather than relying solely on a later trim.
A platform flags audio that you believe is absent
Compare the flagged time with every track in the exported file, including very short fades and transition sounds. If the audio is genuinely absent and you can explain why, follow the platform’s documented appeal process. Do not make an unsupported rights declaration.
