How to Record and Edit Your First Song in GarageBand for Mac

GarageBand for Mac can take you from an empty project to a recorded, lightly edited song using nothing more than your Mac’s built-in microphone. Create an audio track, choose and test an input, record a short take, trim or split the resulting region, listen through the arrangement, and export a listening copy while keeping the editable project.

This first-song workflow follows the current GarageBand for Mac guide interface (version 10.4.14 is shown in Apple’s version selector). Labels can move in later updates, but the sequence remains the same: set up the input, record, edit regions, arrange, and share.

What you need before you record

You need a Mac with GarageBand installed, enough free storage for the project, and a sound source. That source can be your voice, an acoustic instrument, or another sound picked up by the Mac’s built-in microphone. You can also connect a microphone or instrument and select it as the input. An external microphone is optional, not a prerequisite for completing this tutorial.

GarageBand is a music-creation studio with software instruments, a sound library, voice and guitar presets, session drummers, loops, effects, mixing tools, and sharing features. You do not need to install every sound pack or learn those advanced features to make your first recording. Leave tempo, key, and genre defaults alone unless you already have a specific plan.

Built-in microphone or connected microphone?

The simplest first attempt uses the microphone already in your Mac. A connected microphone can be useful when you already own one and your Mac supports its connection, but Apple’s documentation does not establish a universal quality ranking or a best model. Check Mac compatibility before buying or connecting any external device.

Input choice Setup What you control in GarageBand Best starting point
Mac built-in microphone Open GarageBand and select the Mac’s internal input for the audio track. Input source, level where available, monitoring, and mono or stereo channel selection. Voice, acoustic instrument, or a quick first take without extra hardware.
Connected microphone or instrument Connect the device, confirm that macOS recognizes it, then choose it in the track’s Recording Settings. Input source, level or the device’s own hardware control, monitoring, and mono or stereo channel selection. A reader who already has a compatible microphone or instrument input.

Headphones can make monitoring easier and reduce the chance that playback from the Mac’s speakers is recorded again, but they are not required by this workflow. A stand, pop filter, audio interface, or other accessory is likewise optional.

1. Create and save a GarageBand project

  1. Open GarageBand for Mac and start a new project.
  2. Save it immediately with a descriptive name, such as Kitchen Demo 01 or First Guitar Song. Saving before recording gives you a known project to return to if you experiment with edits.
  3. In the new project, add an audio track or select an existing audio track intended for a microphone or instrument. Audio tracks hold recorded sound as regions on the timeline; software-instrument tracks are a different track type.

If GarageBand opens with a choice of project templates or instruments, choose the option that lets you create an audio recording. You can add instruments, loops, or a drummer later. The goal of this first pass is a clean audio take and one understandable edit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Choose the input and check the track

Select the intended input

Select the audio track you will record, then open its Recording Settings. Choose the Mac’s built-in microphone for a no-extra-hardware setup, or select the connected microphone or instrument you just plugged in. If several inputs are listed, identify the one physically receiving your sound rather than assuming the first item is correct.

GarageBand’s recording setup also exposes channel choices such as mono or stereo. A single voice microphone is normally a one-channel source; a stereo device can provide two channels. Use the channel arrangement that matches the connected source instead of creating a stereo recording from a source that only supplies one channel.

Set level and monitoring

Speak or play at the loudness you expect during the real take while watching GarageBand’s input meter. Adjust the record level so the signal is clearly present without sounding distorted. If GarageBand’s record-level slider is dimmed, the connected device may be controlling input volume; use that device’s hardware control instead.

Turn monitoring on only when you need to hear the live input through GarageBand. Headphones are useful for monitoring, while speakers can create an audible loop or leakage into the microphone. The exact monitoring control and its label can vary with the selected track and device.

Resolve microphone permission before troubleshooting hardware

On macOS Mojave or later, GarageBand needs permission to access built-in or connected audio inputs. If the input meter stays inactive or no microphone appears, open macOS privacy settings, find GarageBand under Microphone access, enable it, and reopen the project if macOS requests that. This check should come before replacing a microphone or assuming the project is damaged.

3. Make a short test recording

Do not begin with the entire song. A ten- to twenty-second test reveals most setup problems while they are still easy to fix.

  1. Select the audio track and place the playhead a little before the point where you want the test to begin.
  2. Press GarageBand’s Record control and speak or play a representative passage at the same distance and loudness you plan to use for the full take.
  3. Stop recording with GarageBand’s transport control.
  4. Play the test back from before its beginning. Confirm that a region appeared on the audio track, that the sound is audible, and that the input did not disappear or become obviously distorted.

If the test is silent, recheck the track’s input source and macOS microphone permission. If it is much too quiet, move closer to the microphone or raise the available input control. If it sounds harsh or broken even when the meter is high, lower the source or device level and record another test. These checks are practical listening steps, not a promise that every room or instrument will produce the same result.

4. Record your first song take

Prepare the performance

Decide where the song starts and ends, then leave a little space before the first sound. That extra space makes a later trim easier. If you are playing an instrument and benefit from a steady pulse, enable GarageBand’s metronome. If the instrument needs tuning, use the available tuner before recording. Both are optional tools; a voice memo-style performance does not require either.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capture one complete pass

  1. Return the playhead to the start point you chose.
  2. Select the correct audio track and verify its input one more time.
  3. Start recording, perform the song, and stop only after the final sound has finished.
  4. Save the project.

For a first project, one complete take is more useful than trying to repair every imperfection while recording. Keep the original region until you have listened to the whole performance. If you want another attempt, record a new take in a separate pass or on another audio track so the first version remains available.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

5. Listen before editing

Play the project from before the first note through the end. Listen for an absent signal, an unwanted noise at the beginning or end, a gap caused by stopping too soon, or a section that clearly needs another take. Also check whether playback starts at the intended point and whether any other track is unexpectedly audible.

Do not judge the first take as if it were a mastered release. The immediate decision is narrower: keep this take, record another, or make one simple region edit. GarageBand includes advanced effects and mixing capabilities, but they are not necessary for a first-song recording.

6. Make one clear edit: trim or split a region

Trim an unwanted beginning or ending

  1. Click the recorded audio region on the timeline to select it.
  2. Move the pointer to the beginning or end of the region until GarageBand shows the trim/crop behavior.
  3. Drag the edge inward to remove silence or an unwanted sound. Drag it only as far as the first wanted sound or the end of the final wanted sound.
  4. Play from a little before the edit and confirm that the performance still starts and ends naturally.

Trimming changes the visible boundaries of the region; it does not require you to rerecord the performance. If you trim too far, drag the boundary back outward while the original recorded material is still available in the project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Split out a mistake or noisy section

  1. Select the region and place the playhead at the point where the unwanted section begins.
  2. Use GarageBand’s Split region command to divide the recording.
  3. Place the playhead at the point where the unwanted section ends and split again.
  4. Select the middle piece and remove it, then play across the join.

Splitting is useful when the beginning and ending are good but a cough, long pause, or failed line sits in the middle. If the edit creates an abrupt jump, undo it, move the split to a quieter transition, or keep the section and record a cleaner take instead.

Know the crop and flex pointers

GarageBand’s pointers have different jobs in the Audio Editor. Apple documents the flex pointer in the upper half of an audio region for adjusting timing, while the crop pointer in the lower half trims the region. For a first song, use the crop behavior for boundaries and leave flex timing adjustment alone unless you deliberately want to change when notes or words occur.

7. Use the Audio Editor when the timeline is not precise enough

The timeline is sufficient for a first trim or split. When you need to inspect an audio region more closely, open GarageBand’s Audio Editor for that region. It provides a more detailed view for audio-region edits while preserving the same basic principle: select the correct region, make one change, and listen immediately.

Do not begin by applying pitch correction, quantization, or complex flex edits simply because the controls exist. Those features can be useful later, but they add decisions and can make a first project harder to understand. A clean boundary and a complete, audible take are better first milestones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Arrange the edited regions

Move a region

Drag a selected region left or right on its track to place it at the intended point in the song. Keep the region on the correct track and watch its relationship to the playhead before releasing it.

Resize a region

Use the region boundary to reveal more or less of the recorded material. Resizing is useful after a split or when you need to remove a little extra silence without creating another region.

Join compatible pieces when appropriate

GarageBand documents joining regions as well as splitting them. Join only after you have listened to the separate pieces and are satisfied with their order. Keeping regions separate while editing makes it easier to undo a decision; joining is an arrangement step, not a requirement for exporting.

9. Final playback check

  1. Start playback before the first audible event and listen through the complete song.
  2. Check that the opening is not clipped, the ending is not cut off, and removed sections do not leave confusing gaps.
  3. Confirm that the intended audio track is audible and that an unwanted test region or duplicate take is not playing.
  4. Save the GarageBand project after the final edit.

If the result still contains an obvious performance mistake, recording another take is often faster and more natural than stacking advanced corrections on top of it. Keep the version you prefer and remove only clearly unwanted test material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Export a listening copy

GarageBand treats the editable project and the exported song as different things. The project contains the tracks and regions you can continue to edit. The export is a convenient listening copy for another device or person.

  1. Save the project first.
  2. Open GarageBand’s song export workflow.
  3. Choose the destination offered for exporting to disk or to iCloud.
  4. Review the current export dialog’s available format and quality choices for your intended destination rather than assuming a particular format or bitrate.
  5. Start the export and wait for GarageBand to complete it.
  6. Play the exported copy from outside GarageBand to confirm that it contains the complete song.

Keep the original GarageBand project even after a successful export. An exported listening file is not a substitute for the editable arrangement, and it may not preserve the separate regions and settings you need for future edits.

Troubleshooting the first recording

No microphone appears

  • Reconnect the microphone or instrument and confirm that macOS recognizes it.
  • Return to the audio track’s Recording Settings and select the intended source.
  • Check macOS microphone privacy permission, especially on Mojave or later.
  • If you are using a device with its own input control, adjust that device rather than a dimmed GarageBand slider.

The track records silence

  • Make sure the audio track, not a software-instrument track, is selected.
  • Confirm that the input meter responds before pressing Record.
  • Check monitoring and the physical connection if the source is external.
  • Record another short test after changing one setting at a time.

The recording is distorted

  • Lower the available input level or the connected device’s hardware gain.
  • Move the source slightly farther from the built-in or connected microphone.
  • Record a new test at the loudest expected part of the song, not only a quiet introduction.

The edit removed too much

Undo the trim or split, then make a smaller change while listening from just before the edit. Region boundaries can be resized again as long as the underlying recorded material remains in the project.

The exported copy is missing a section

Play the complete project before exporting and inspect the timeline for muted, moved, or accidentally deleted regions. Save again, export a new copy, and test that copy outside GarageBand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional next steps after your first song

Once the basic workflow feels comfortable, you can add another audio track for a second take, use software instruments or loops, try a session drummer, and explore effects or mixing. GarageBand also documents more advanced timing edits with flex tools and additional audio-region operations. Treat each as a separate skill: make one change, listen, and save a new project version when you want to preserve a known-good arrangement.

The essential habit is simple: keep the editable project, make small region edits, and listen after every meaningful change. That approach lets a first-time GarageBand for Mac user finish a song without buying extra equipment or mastering every feature in the application.
