To record a webpage as video, capture the browser tab, window, or entire display that shows it. In a web app, the Screen Capture API method getDisplayMedia() asks the user to choose a surface and returns a media stream that can be saved with MediaRecorder. For a produced video with overlays or a URL-driven scene, add the page as an OBS Studio Browser Source. These methods record rendered pixels; they do not download the website’s original video file.
Choose the right recording method
Your choice depends on what must appear in the finished file and how much control you need.

The documented workflows do not establish one universally best recorder, a universal output format, or a quality winner. Pick the surface and editing workflow that match your goal.
Record the page you can see with a browser or desktop recorder
- Open the webpage and put it in the state you want to demonstrate. Close unrelated tabs and notifications.
- Open your recorder’s capture command and choose Browser tab, Window, or Entire screen. Exact labels vary by recorder and operating system.
- In the browser or system sharing dialog, select the page’s tab, its browser window, or the display containing it. The selection is permission-mediated; the recorder cannot silently choose a surface for you.
- Enable microphone or system-audio options only when your narration or demonstration requires them. A microphone is optional, not a prerequisite.
- Start recording, perform the demonstration, then use the recorder’s stop control. Save the resulting file and inspect the beginning, end, and any page transitions before editing.
A tab recording follows the rendered page, including animations and scrolling. Window or display capture also includes anything else visible in that selected surface, so move private material off-screen before you start.

Navigation during a capture
Navigation behavior depends on the recorder and capture architecture. Chrome’s extension documentation states: “If called within a content script, recording will automatically end when the user navigates to a new page.” Extension developers who need a recording to continue across navigation can use an offscreen-document approach described in the Chrome screen-capture guide. Do not assume that statement applies identically to every desktop recorder.
Build a simple recorder with getDisplayMedia()
The Screen Capture API presents a chooser, then returns a stream for the selected tab, window, or display. The following complete page records the stream with MediaRecorder, collects its chunks, and downloads a WebM file when you stop. The web.dev screen-recording guide demonstrates this general pattern.

</script>When you click the first button, the browser shows its sharing dialog. Choose the tab containing the webpage, a browser window, or a display. If you decline, close the dialog, or the selected track ends, the page reports the failure or stops the recording. The example requests audio, but the person choosing the surface still controls what audio is shared; remove audio: true when you do not need it.
Saving and converting the result
The example saves the chunks as WebM, matching the format used in web.dev’s example. The supplied documentation does not establish that every recorder or browser exports WebM, nor that WebM is universally preferable. If your editor or publishing system requires another format, convert the file in your normal post-production workflow and verify audio synchronization after conversion.

Use OBS Studio for a composed recording
OBS is useful when the page is one layer in a production rather than the only thing on your desktop. Its Browser Source loads a webpage by URL or a local file inside an OBS scene.
- Install and open OBS Studio, then create or select a scene.
- In Sources, choose Browser (Browser Source).
- Enter the webpage URL or local file path and set the source’s viewport width and height to the canvas you intend to record.
- Set a page refresh or custom CSS/other source options only when your scene requires them; test the page before recording.
- Add microphone, camera, image, or other sources as separate layers, arrange them in the scene, and check the audio mixer.
- Start recording in OBS, interact with the Browser Source or let its animation run, then stop and review the file.
This embeds the page in OBS instead of recording the browser window as it appears on your desktop. It can prevent unrelated desktop content from appearing and makes overlays and transitions repeatable. It also means you should test the page’s loading behavior at the chosen viewport before the final take.
Capture one element instead of the whole tab
Chrome’s Element Capture documentation describes a developer API that restricts a stream to a selected HTML element and its direct descendants. That is different from dragging an arbitrary rectangle in a consumer screen recorder. Use it when you control a web application and need a specific component; otherwise, capture the tab or use an OBS Browser Source.
Element capture does not turn a webpage into a downloadable source video. It still records rendered output, and the user-permission and browser-policy rules for screen capture remain relevant.

Handle prompts, permissions, and privacy
When no sharing prompt appears
Managed Chrome installations can control whether websites may prompt users to share a tab, window, or screen video stream. A missing or blocked dialog may therefore be an administrator policy rather than a bug in your page. Check the applicable Chrome Enterprise policy documentation or ask the administrator to permit the required capture type.
Protect information outside the demonstration
- Choose tab capture instead of entire-display capture when other windows may contain private information.
- Close password managers, messaging popups, and notifications before sharing a window or display.
- Tell participants when microphone or system audio is being recorded and obtain any consent required by your workplace or jurisdiction.
- Review the complete recording before publishing; a recorder captures whatever is rendered on the selected surface.
The cited technical material explains how surface capture works, not whether you have legal permission to record a particular site or content. Confirm rights and applicable rules yourself.
Performance and reliability checklist
- Run a short test at the same page size, tab, and audio settings as the final take.
- Keep the page and recorder visible only on the selected surface; unnecessary tabs and applications consume resources.
- Wait for the page’s important content and animations to load before pressing record.
- Watch the preview for a frozen page, missing audio, or a stopped track.
- For long demonstrations, make a brief test of navigation between pages, because some extension capture flows end on navigation.
- Save the raw file before editing and keep a second copy while you verify the export.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Permission denied” or the chooser was canceled
Run the capture from a user gesture such as a button click, reopen the page, and choose a surface in the dialog. If an administrator policy blocks sharing, the user cannot override it from page code.
The recording stops when I open another page
That can be expected in a content-script extension flow. Use the offscreen-document pattern described in the Chrome guide, or use a desktop recorder/OBS workflow designed for the navigation you need.

The video has no sound
Confirm that the selected surface offers audio and that the recorder requested it. Check the operating system’s input/output selection and perform a short test; a video track can work even when no audio track is shared.
The page is cropped or the text is too small
For tab or window capture, adjust the browser window and page zoom before recording. For OBS, set the Browser Source viewport and scene canvas deliberately, then test at the final output size.
Only part of the page appears
A selected window or tab records its rendered viewport, not an automatically generated full-page scroll. Scroll deliberately during the take, or use a tool designed for full-page still captures when video is not required.
The saved file will not open in my editor
The example creates WebM. Use an editor that accepts WebM or convert it in your normal media pipeline, then check that both video and audio tracks survived.
