To record a video playing in your browser with Snagit, open Snagit Capture, choose Video, select the browser window or the area you want to record, and turn on System Audio if you need the video’s sound. Start recording, play the video, stop the capture, then review and trim it in Snagit Editor. Turn off microphone audio if you do not need narration. Some protected media may block recording, and you should record only content you are permitted to capture.
Before you start: what Snagit can capture
Snagit records the content displayed in the selected capture area. You can select a browser or other window, a custom region, or the full screen; the exact controls and labels may vary by Snagit release and operating system. System playback audio and microphone input are separate choices: use system audio for the sound coming from the web video, and microphone audio for your own narration.
Recording is not guaranteed to work with every site. TechSmith Support warns that some sites and media solutions use HDCP to prevent unauthorized recording of protected content. If a protected video cannot be captured, do not try to bypass the protection. Check the service’s rules and use an authorized download, export, or viewing option instead.
How to record a web video in Snagit
- Open Snagit Capture. In the Capture window, select the Video tab.
- Choose the audio sources. Enable System Audio to include the computer’s playback sound. Enable microphone audio only if you want to narrate or record your voice.
- Select what to record. Use the capture selection controls to choose the browser/video area, a browser window, or the full display. A custom area is useful when you want to exclude surrounding tabs or other on-screen material.
- Prepare the web video. Open the video in the browser and position it in the selected area. If you can, pause it at the point where you want the recording to begin. Close or move unrelated windows and notifications out of the capture area.
- Start the capture and play the video. Start recording in Snagit, then start playback. Keep the selected area unobstructed while the video runs.
- Stop and review. Stop recording when the segment is complete. Review the result in Snagit Editor and trim unwanted material at the beginning or end.
- Save or share the result. Use the save or sharing choices available in your installed version. Sharing destinations and their availability can vary.
Choose the right audio setup
Record the web video’s sound only
Turn on System Audio and turn off microphone audio. If the microphone is active while speakers play the same audio, it may pick up the speakers as well as the system signal. The result can sound echoed or doubled. A headset can help prevent speaker sound from bleeding into the microphone, but it is not required when you are recording playback only and have disabled the microphone.

Record narration with the video
Enable System Audio for the video and select the intended microphone for your narration. Speak into the selected device and check the recording before making a long capture. A headset is a practical option if speaker bleed makes your voice track echo, but check the input selection first: choosing the wrong microphone can result in weak or missing narration.
Record a call or webinar
If you need both remote participants and your own voice, enable system and microphone audio and select the devices you intend to use. TechSmith’s webinar audio guidance is Windows-specific and was updated August 23, 2024; its older Control Panel navigation should not be treated as universal instructions for current Windows releases or other operating systems. Prefer the audio-device controls available in your installed Snagit and operating-system versions.
Improve the capture before recording
- Keep the target visible. A window or region capture will not show content that is outside the selected area. Avoid moving or resizing the browser during recording.
- Reduce interruptions. Close unrelated overlays and silence notifications if they might appear over the video. If they are inside the selected area, Snagit may capture them.
- Make a short test. Record a few seconds and check both picture and sound before capturing a longer segment. This can reveal a wrong capture area, disabled system audio, or a microphone problem early.
- Leave performance headroom. Avoid running unnecessary high-load applications during a capture. If the recording stutters, try a lower video-quality setting and turn off a webcam if you do not need one.
TechSmith’s troubleshooting guidance lists 8 GB of RAM as recommended and 1.6 GB of disk space for program installation. Those are published support figures, not a guarantee that a particular computer will record video smoothly; available resources and the capture workload matter.

Troubleshoot common Snagit web-video problems
The capture is blank, blocked, or does not show the video
Check that you selected the area where the video is actually displayed and that the browser is visible there. If the site or media provider uses HDCP, recording may be prevented. Snagit’s guidance does not enumerate affected services, so a failed capture alone does not identify the cause. Respect the provider’s restrictions rather than attempting to defeat them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe recording has no web-video sound
Confirm that System Audio was enabled before recording and that you selected the intended playback device where Snagit or the operating system offers a device choice. Microphone audio is a separate input and does not substitute for system audio when the goal is to record browser playback.
The sound is echoed or doubled
For playback-only recording, disable microphone audio while leaving system audio on. If you need narration, use the intended microphone and consider a headset so the speakers are less likely to bleed into it. For a webinar, verify that the remote audio and microphone are assigned to the intended sources.

Frames drop, playback stutters, or audio and video go out of sync
TechSmith lists dropped frames, out-of-sync video, and poor performance among issues to investigate. Check that the computer meets the current requirements and that relevant drivers are current. Try lowering video quality and closing demanding applications; disable a webcam if it is not needed. On Windows, TechSmith’s troubleshooting guidance says that in Snagit 2023 and later, switching away from hardware-accelerated recording may help with certain problems. The exact menu path is version-specific, so consult the controls in your installed release rather than assuming a path from another version.
Audio is distorted or an input does not initialize
Check the selected audio devices and their operating-system permissions, then make a short test capture. If you recently connected or changed an audio device, verify that Snagit is using the intended one. TechSmith lists audio-device initialization and distorted audio among troubleshooting topics; the appropriate fix depends on the device and system configuration.
Colors or other capture output look wrong
Update or check graphics drivers and try the troubleshooting options supported by your installed Snagit version, including software recording mode where available. TechSmith lists color and capture errors among its troubleshooting cases, but the available guidance does not establish one universal fix for every computer.

Keep the recording usable and appropriate
Before recording, confirm that capturing and keeping the content is allowed by the relevant site, content owner, and rules that apply to you. A successful technical capture does not establish permission. Afterward, review the recording for stray personal information, notifications, or audio you did not intend to include, then save or share it using an option supported by your Snagit version.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Snagit record a web video as a video file or a screenshot?
This workflow records video, not just a still frame. ScreenshotNeo, mentioned above for page images, is a separate screenshot and PDF service and does not record video.
Can I record a web video if the site blocks screen capture?
Not necessarily. A site or media solution using HDCP may prevent capture; use an authorized viewing or download option rather than trying to bypass that restriction.
