Send a short, personal message that says what reminded you of the person, that you would like to catch up, and that there is no pressure to reply immediately. For example: “Hi, I was thinking about you when I saw [specific reminder]. I know it’s been a while, but I’d love to catch up if you’re open to it. How have you been?” Then let the other person choose the pace.
Feeling awkward does not mean reconnecting is a bad idea. A seven-study program involving almost 2,500 people found that hesitation is common even when people still care about an old friend. The same research suggests that a tiny warm-up—messaging current friends or acquaintances first—may make the first outreach easier. It does not promise a reply or restore the friendship, so treat the message as an invitation rather than a test.

First, decide what kind of “lost touch” this is
Advice for an ordinary drift is different from advice for a relationship that ended after harm. Before opening your messages app, identify the situation you are actually facing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Situation | What it usually means | Best first move |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary drift | Work, moves, family responsibilities, health, or changing routines gradually reduced contact. | Send a low-pressure note that refers to a genuine memory or current update. |
| Awkward ending | There was tension, but no immediate safety concern. | Decide whether acknowledging the tension is necessary before suggesting a conversation. |
| Specific hurt or conflict | Someone was harmed, trust was broken, or an apology is owed. | Name your part plainly and give the other person control over whether contact continues. |
| Unsafe or abusive relationship | Contact could expose you to intimidation, manipulation, stalking, or renewed harm. | Do not use casual-reconnection advice as a reason to reopen contact. Prioritize safety and support. |
The studies behind the most useful numbers in this article generally asked participants to think of an old friend they still cared about, had contact details for, and believed might appreciate hearing from them. They were mostly studying a relationship that had faded without a particular rupture. Those findings cannot establish that every estrangement should be repaired.

Why sending the first message feels harder than it should
In Simon Fraser University’s 2024 account of research by Lara B. Aknin and Gillian M. Sandstrom, 90% of people in the first study said they had lost touch with someone they still cared about. Yet 70% were neutral or negative about getting back in touch at that moment, even when they felt warmly about the friendship. The obstacle was often uncertainty, not lack of affection.
Participants commonly worried that the friend would not want to hear from them, that the exchange would be awkward after so much time, or that contacting them would be bothersome. They also mentioned having nothing to say, not knowing how to word the message, and not having time for a long catch-up. Naming those fears helps you solve the practical problem instead of interpreting hesitation as a verdict on the friendship.
Two studies illustrate the gap between intention and action. Participants said they wanted to reconnect, believed the friend would appreciate contact, had the person’s contact information, and were given time to draft and send a message. Even under those favorable conditions, 28% sent a message in one study and 37% in another. Those are results for those experiments, not a prediction of what you will do.
Choose one person and one realistic goal
Start with someone you genuinely want to hear from
Do not make a broad list of every person from school, a former workplace, or an earlier phase of life. Choose one person whose present-day company you would welcome. A specific target keeps the task small and prevents the first message from becoming a performance about your entire history.
Set a modest goal
Your first goal is sending a respectful invitation, not recovering the exact closeness you once had. The other person may answer warmly, answer briefly, reply later, decline, or not reply. None of those outcomes can be controlled by perfect wording. A realistic goal protects you from turning one message into a judgment about your worth.
Check your motive
Ask yourself what you hope will happen. Wanting to share an update or learn how someone is doing is different from contacting them only because you feel lonely, need a favor, or want reassurance that the past still matters. Mixed motives are normal, but knowing them helps you avoid placing an unfair emotional burden on the recipient.
Use a three-minute warm-up if you are frozen
Aknin and Sandstrom’s 2024 work compared old-friend outreach with a brief warm-up in which people messaged current friends and acquaintances. As reported in Scientific American, about one-third of people in the control group sent the old-friend message, compared with about one-half in the warm-up group. The warm-up lasted three minutes.
This is promising evidence about one study exercise, not a required ritual and not proof that practice works for everyone. You can adapt the idea without making it elaborate.

- Send one ordinary message to someone you already contact: answer a question, share a photo, or ask how their week is going.
- Send a second brief message if you still feel stuck. Do not rehearse the old-friend note repeatedly.
- Return to the person you chose and write the simplest honest invitation you can.
If you feel ready, skip the warm-up and send the message immediately. The point is to lower the activation energy, not to create another task you can postpone.
Write an opening that is personal but easy to answer
Include a specific reminder
A concrete detail shows that you are contacting this person rather than broadcasting a generic “long time no see.” Mention a place, song, hobby, class, joke, mutual acquaintance, or recent event that naturally brought them to mind. Keep the detail kind and proportionate; a private reference that could embarrass them is not a good opener.
State the invitation clearly
Say that you would like to catch up if they are open to it. “I’d love to hear how you’re doing” gives the recipient a clear choice. Avoid presenting a hidden demand, such as immediately asking for a favor or requiring them to explain the silence.

“Whenever you have a moment” or “No pressure if life is busy” can make the invitation easier to receive, provided the phrase is sincere. Do not add a long disclaimer about how anxious you are; that can make the other person feel responsible for managing your feelings.
A practical template is: “Hi, I was thinking about you when I [specific reminder]. I know it’s been a while, but I’d love to catch up if you’re open to it. How have you been?” This is an editorial example, not a research-tested formula.
Do not chase a magic word count or message formula
A 2025 follow-up in Collabra: Psychology analyzed 410 reaching-out notes. Their mean length was 44.2 words. Researchers coded features including length, tone, tense, pronouns, and questions, then found no measured note dimension that reliably predicted whether a participant sent the note. The average describes what those participants wrote; it is not a recommended target.
Use enough words to identify yourself, explain the reminder, and make the invitation understandable. A two-sentence text can be enough. An email may need a little more context. If the draft sounds like an apology, autobiography, or emotional negotiation, shorten it until the recipient can answer without undertaking a major project.

| Channel | Useful when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Text or messaging app | You used it before and want a brief, low-friction invitation. | A very late-night message or a stream of follow-ups can feel intrusive. |
| You no longer share a current messaging thread or want to include a little context. | A long subject line or several paragraphs can make the reply feel like homework. | |
| Call | You already had a phone-based relationship and both of you normally prefer live conversation. | An unexpected call gives the recipient less control than an invitation to schedule one. |
| Social platform message | It is the only current contact route and the account is active. | Use a private message rather than a public comment about the friendship. |
If you are unsure, start asynchronously. A written note lets the person read and answer when they have capacity. You can suggest a call only after the exchange feels mutual.
What to do after you press send
Wait without creating a story
Do not monitor read receipts or build an explanation around every hour of silence. People miss messages, change numbers, work irregular schedules, or need time to decide what they want. A delayed response is information about timing, not proof that your message was wrong.
Follow up once, if appropriate
If the message may have been missed and the relationship was ordinarily comfortable, one short follow-up after a reasonable interval can be considerate: “Just wanted to make sure this reached you—no pressure to respond.” Do not send repeated prompts, switch across every available channel, or ask mutual friends to intervene.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Accept nonresponse
No reply is a boundary, whether it is deliberate or simply the result of circumstances you cannot see. Stop contacting them when continued outreach would be unwanted. You can value what the friendship meant without obtaining a new conversation.
If they reply, let the friendship restart at its current age
A warm reply is an opening, not a command to recreate the past. Ask about the person’s life now, answer their questions, and share a concise update of your own. Avoid conducting an inventory of every missed year in the first exchange.
Match their pace and detail
If they send a few lines, answer in a few lines. If they volunteer a substantial update, show interest with a specific follow-up question. Do not interpret a short first reply as rejection; some people need several exchanges before they feel conversationally close again.
Suggest a small next step
When the conversation is reciprocal, offer an easy option: a 20-minute call, a walk, or coffee near a place that works for both of you. Give two possible times rather than demanding an immediate commitment. A small meeting is easier to accept than an undefined promise to “hang out sometime.”
Build continuity rather than demanding intimacy
If you want the connection to continue, follow through on the next contact. Share an occasional relevant message, remember what they told you, and make plans that fit both schedules. Reconnection is usually a series of ordinary interactions, not one dramatic conversation that restores an old version of the relationship.

If the friendship ended after a specific hurt
The studies summarized here focused mainly on losing touch without a particular reason. They did not test apology scripts or show that casual outreach repairs a conflict. If you caused harm, do not disguise an apology as a nostalgic check-in.
Make the apology specific
Name what you did, acknowledge the impact without arguing about intent, and avoid asking the other person to comfort you. “I interrupted your move and then stopped responding. That was hurtful and unreliable, and I’m sorry” is more accountable than “Sorry if things got weird.”
Remove the demand for reconciliation
Say that they do not have to reply and that you will respect their decision. An apology is not a trade in which the recipient owes renewed access. If they want to discuss it, listen without turning the conversation into a defense of your character.
Consider whether contact serves them
Sometimes the responsible action is to leave someone alone, especially when there has been repeated boundary crossing, coercion, or abuse. The fact that you miss a person does not override their safety or autonomy.
Protect yourself when contact could be unsafe
Do not apply friendly-reconnection advice to an abusive former partner, a person who stalked or threatened you, or anyone whose renewed access could put you at risk. Consider advice from a trusted professional or local support service instead of testing the situation with a message.
If you choose to communicate in a complicated but non-dangerous situation, use a channel that preserves your control, avoid sharing sensitive location details, and tell a trusted person what you are doing. You are allowed to decide that closure without contact is the better outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes that make reconnection harder
- Sending a life story first. A large emotional download can overwhelm someone who has not spoken with you in years.
- Using guilt. “You never answered me” or “I guess you forgot me” turns an invitation into an accusation.
- Demanding an explanation for the gap. The other person may have private reasons they are not ready to share.
- Assuming the old role still exists. Former classmates, teammates, or housemates may now have different capacities and priorities.
- Overinterpreting social-media activity. Seeing a person post does not tell you whether they have the time or desire for a personal conversation.
- Making the first contact transactional. Asking for a referral, money, a favor, or access before rebuilding trust can make the motive appear instrumental.
- Continuing after a clear boundary. A request for space, a refusal, or repeated silence should end the campaign.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The 2024 work by Aknin and Sandstrom combined surveys and experiments across seven studies. In one experiment, participants were no more willing to contact an old friend than to talk with a stranger. The warm-up condition was associated with more old-friend messages than scrolling through social media in the control condition. These are observations from selected study settings, not a universal psychological law.

The researchers also reported that people who did send a message described greater immediate happiness than those who did not. That result concerns the immediate study context. It does not establish lasting well-being, a reply, or restoration of the friendship.

The 2025 follow-up drew participants from the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada and examined notes from people who wanted to reconnect, had contact details, and believed the friend would welcome contact. It is not a global estimate of social norms, and it does not show that any particular wording causes success.
A simple decision path for your next ten minutes
- Classify the relationship. Is this ordinary drift, unresolved conflict, or a situation where contact could be unsafe?
- Choose one person. Pick someone you genuinely want to hear from, not someone you feel obligated to contact.
- Choose a channel. Use the normal or least intrusive route that gives both of you control over timing.
- Write three parts. Add a specific reminder, a clear wish to catch up, and an easy opening for their response.
- Set a boundary for yourself. Decide in advance that you will not send a stream of follow-ups.
- Send or pause deliberately. If anxiety is the only barrier, try a three-minute warm-up with current contacts. If the relationship raises safety concerns, do not send the message.
- Respond to the response. Match their pace, suggest a small next step only when interest is mutual, and accept whatever boundary they communicate.
Examples for different levels of familiarity
Someone you used to message often
“Hey, I heard the band we used to play on repeat and thought of you. It’s been ages. I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to if you feel like catching up.”
A former colleague or classmate
“Hi, I saw a photo of the old project team and remembered how much we laughed during that deadline. I hope you’re doing well. Would you be open to a quick catch-up sometime?”

“Hi, you came to mind today. I know a lot may have changed since we last spoke, so there’s no pressure at all. If you’d like to reconnect, I’d be glad to hear how you are.”
An accountability-first apology
“I’ve been thinking about how I stopped responding when you needed clarity. That was unfair, and I’m sorry. You do not owe me a reply; I wanted to acknowledge it and will respect whatever you prefer.”
These examples are starting points. Change the details so the note sounds like you, and do not use an apology example unless it accurately describes your conduct.
When reconnecting works, and when to let the attempt end
A successful reconnection is not necessarily a return to daily contact. It may be one kind exchange, a useful apology, a new occasional friendship, or a peaceful understanding that your lives have moved in different directions. Measure the outcome by honesty, mutuality, and respect rather than by reproducing the past.
Let the attempt end when the person clearly declines, asks for no contact, repeatedly ignores reasonable outreach, or responds in a way that makes you feel unsafe. You can grieve the relationship and still stop pursuing it. The message’s job is to open a door; it cannot make another person walk through it.
