How to Reconnect a YouTube Radio Stream After an Internet Drop

Restore your internet connection, return to the stopped YouTube video or station, and select play or retry. If it still will not play, check whether other apps can connect, then restart YouTube and—if necessary—the device. The exact steps depend on whether you were listening in YouTube Music, the YouTube app, a browser, or on a TV.

First, identify what stopped playing

“YouTube radio” can mean a continuous station in YouTube Music or a YouTube video or playlist left playing. The recovery principle is the same, but the controls differ by device. You may see messages such as “Connection to server lost” or “Playback error. Tap to retry.” YouTube lists these among playback error messages.

Reconnect in this order

  1. Check that internet access is back. Try another app or website on the same device. If those fail too, address the Wi-Fi, mobile-data, or broadband connection before troubleshooting YouTube. YouTube recommends restarting the connection and checking the available speed; other people or devices using the network can reduce the bandwidth available for playback. See YouTube’s streaming and video troubleshooting steps.
  2. Retry the stopped item. Return to the video or station and press play, or select the on-screen retry option. If it remains stuck, test a different network—for example, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data if available. Mobile-data charges may apply.
  3. Close and reopen YouTube. If the connection works elsewhere but playback does not, fully close the YouTube app or browser tab, reopen it, and try again. On a computer, update the browser if an update is available; restart the device if playback is still stuck. These are among YouTube’s recommended troubleshooting steps.
  4. Restart the device if needed. A restart can help when the app or player remains unresponsive after the connection has returned.

Phone or tablet

YouTube or YouTube Music app

After confirming that the phone is online, return to the stopped item and tap play or retry. If that fails, close and reopen the app, then try another network. If YouTube Music does not restore the station, start it again from the song, artist, album, or radio entry point available in your current app version. YouTube describes Music radio as continuous stations based on favorite songs, albums, and artists, but does not promise that a station will resume automatically after an internet outage. YouTube’s description of YouTube Music radio.

Phone controlling a TV

If the phone and TV have lost their link, reconnecting that link is separate from restoring internet access. For a TV previously linked using a TV code, open YouTube on the TV. On the phone, open YouTube settings, choose General, then Watch on TV, and link the listed device again. Menu names may vary with device and app version. See YouTube’s instructions for linking devices with a TV code.

Computer browser

Check that the computer is back online, then reload the YouTube page and retry the video or playlist. If playback still fails, close and reopen the browser, check for a browser update, and restart the computer if needed. To separate a YouTube problem from a network problem, try another website or switch to another available network.

TV or streaming device

  1. Confirm that the TV or streaming device is connected to the internet, then reopen YouTube and retry playback.
  2. If it fails again, restart the TV or streaming device. YouTube’s TV guidance recommends disconnecting its power briefly, reconnecting it, and trying again.
  3. Check for system software updates on the TV or streaming device.
  4. If possible, try YouTube on another supported device. That helps determine whether the issue is specific to the TV setup.

YouTube recommends a minimum connection speed of 7 Mbps for HD playback on a TV. This is a recommendation for that playback context, not a guarantee against interruptions. If the connection is slow or unstable, test closer to the router, reduce obstructions or interference, and limit other devices using the connection. See YouTube’s TV playback and connection guidance.

Alternative way to display playback on a TV

If YouTube on the TV is failing but another device can play the video, YouTube lists connecting a laptop to the television with an HDMI cable or using Chromecast as alternatives. HDMI can display playback from a working laptop; it does not restore internet access or reconnect the original TV stream. See YouTube’s TV playback alternatives.

Will the radio resume automatically?

Do not count on a universal auto-resume after a dropped connection. YouTube’s published troubleshooting guidance recommends retrying playback and checking the app, device, and connection; it does not guarantee that the same station or queue will resume. If the station does not return, start it again from the available radio entry point.

Autoplay is different: it starts a related video after a video ends, rather than reconnecting playback interrupted mid-stream. YouTube says Autoplay stops after 30 minutes of inactivity on a mobile network or after 4 hours on Wi-Fi; those are inactivity limits, not reconnection timers. YouTube’s Autoplay guidance.

Offline listening and future interruptions

YouTube Music Premium offers downloads for offline listening. Content downloaded in advance may be available without a connection, but this does not establish that a live or newly generated radio station can continue offline. See YouTube Music’s offline listening guidance.

If you mean a YouTube live broadcast that you operate, rather than music playing for you to listen to, the recovery problem is different: it concerns keeping a channel’s broadcast running through an internet outage. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube, not a way to resume a listener’s YouTube Music station.
