Look for the paid-ad disclosure attached to the search placement. Do not decide from ranking, design, or how relevant the result feels. Microsoft says Bing labels paid advertisements, while payment cannot move a website higher in the organic “blue links.” The exact wording, color, position, and number of ads can vary by interface, device, language, and location.
The reliable test: find the ad disclosure
When you search Bing, inspect each result for a marker that identifies it as paid advertising. That disclosure is the meaningful distinction. A result can appear highly relevant, use the same basic page format as other results, or appear near the top without being organic. Conversely, an organic result can rank first without carrying any advertising disclosure.

Microsoft’s public explanation of Bing results confirms that paid advertisements are labeled. The same explanation says that Bing does not allow websites to improve their organic ranking positions—the “blue links”—through payment. In practical terms, a company can pay for an advertising placement through Microsoft Advertising, but it cannot buy a higher position in Bing’s unpaid ranking.
Microsoft does not publish one universal Bing label string, color, location, or ad count that applies to every search experience. Therefore, treat the disclosure associated with the placement—not a guessed phrase or visual pattern—as the deciding evidence.

Paid advertisements and organic results are different systems
| What to check | Paid search advertisement | Organic result |
|---|---|---|
| Payment | The advertiser has purchased a search placement through Microsoft Advertising or another authorized advertising arrangement. | Payment is not what determines the result’s organic ranking. |
| Disclosure | Microsoft says paid advertisements are labeled. The exact wording and visual treatment are not stated as universal. | It is not identified as a paid advertisement by an ad disclosure. |
| Ranking position | Position is an advertising placement and may change with the query and interface. | It is one of Bing’s unpaid “blue-link” results. |
| Can payment raise the blue-link position? | No. Microsoft explicitly says payment cannot improve an organic ranking position. | Its organic position is not bought through advertising. |
| Relevance | An ad may be relevant to your query, but relevance does not prove that it is organic. | Relevance alone does not identify the result as organic either; use the presence or absence of the disclosure. |
| Universal visual format | Not stated by Microsoft; do not rely on a fixed color, location, or number of ads. | Not stated as a universal visual comparison in the cited Bing explanation. |
The table’s key distinction is not “top versus lower” or “attractive versus plain.” It is disclosed paid placement versus an unpaid organic blue link.
How to check a Bing result step by step
- Run the search normally. Use the Bing search page and enter the query you actually want to investigate. Do not change your interpretation because the page contains a commercial-looking query or a general-information query.
- Review the result block, not only the destination title. A result is a complete placement that can include a title, address, description, extensions, and other interface elements. Look around that block for the ad disclosure Microsoft associates with paid placement.
- Read the disclosure attached to that placement. If Bing identifies the result as an advertisement, classify it as paid. The wording may not be identical in every Bing context, so do not reject a disclosure merely because it differs from a label you have seen elsewhere.
- Keep undisclosed blue links separate. A result without the paid-ad disclosure should be treated as an organic result for this purpose. Its position does not become paid simply because it is first, prominent, or commercially useful.
- Check other placements independently. Do not assume that one disclosure applies to every result on the page. Examine each placement on its own, especially when several results appear together.
- Record the context if you are comparing screens. Note the device, language, location, and date when documenting what you saw. Microsoft describes those kinds of context as relevant to Bing results and settings, and the interface is not promised to be identical across them.
This process deliberately avoids guessing from visual design. It still works when the page layout changes because it asks the one question Microsoft’s documentation answers: does the placement carry an advertising disclosure?
Why the result can feel personal or unusually relevant
Ad relevance is not evidence that a result is organic. Microsoft’s explanation of “Why am I seeing this ad?” lists several possible inputs for ad selection, including your current search, a similar recent topic, sites you have visited, information associated with a Microsoft account, and information you shared with an advertiser.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThose are possible reasons, not a diagnosis of any single impression. Seeing an ad after visiting a related site does not establish that the visit caused it; seeing an ad that matches your query does not establish which signal selected it. Use the disclosure to identify the placement, and treat targeting explanations as possibilities rather than certainty.

Relevance can also make a paid result look like the best answer. That is a normal feature of advertising systems: an advertiser wants the placement to match the searcher’s apparent intent. It does not change the result’s paid status or give the advertiser an organic ranking advantage.
Do not use position, color, or design as a substitute for disclosure
A first result is not automatically an ad
Some searches may show a paid placement prominently, while an organic blue link may appear first in another layout or on another device. Microsoft does not document a fixed position that lets you classify every top result. A position-based rule will therefore produce both false positives and false negatives.
A lower result is not automatically organic
An advertisement can be placed where it is useful for the query without matching a familiar “top of page” assumption. If a disclosure is attached to the placement, it remains paid regardless of where it appears in the page flow.

Color and styling are not dependable tests
Do not require a particular background color, border, icon, font weight, or spacing before accepting that a placement is an ad. Microsoft’s Bing explanation confirms labeling but does not promise one visual treatment in every market, language, device, or layout.

Similarity to neighboring results is expected
Paid and organic search placements can both contain a title, destination address, and descriptive text. Similar formatting is precisely why the disclosure matters. Compare the disclosure status, not the amount of text or how closely the block resembles the links around it.
How interface differences affect what you see
Bing results can be presented in different contexts. Microsoft refers to factors such as location, language, and device when describing Bing results and settings. A change in any of those contexts can alter the page’s arrangement or the way information is displayed. The reviewed Bing documentation does not promise that the disclosure will occupy the same pixel position or use the same visual treatment everywhere.
When teaching someone else to recognize an ad, give the transferable instruction—“find the paid-ad disclosure attached to the placement”—rather than a screenshot-based instruction such as “look for a marker in the upper-left corner.” A screenshot can be accurate for one context and misleading in another.
If two people see different result orders or different numbers of visible placements, that difference alone does not prove that one person has been shown an ad and the other has not. Each person should inspect the disclosure on the individual result.

Bing search is not the same as MSN
Microsoft publishes separate guidance for MSN. Its MSN feedback FAQ describes “Ad” labels for certain MSN native or sponsored stories and display ads, and says that “Ad Choices” may also appear in some countries. That information concerns MSN surfaces, not a universal specification for Bing web-search results.
Use the MSN terminology only when you are discussing an MSN page. Do not turn it into a promise that every Bing search result uses the exact word “Ad,” the same placement, or the same additional controls. For Bing, the defensible rule remains to look for the paid-ad disclosure associated with the search placement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and the correction for each
- Mistake: “The first blue link is sponsored.” Correction: A first position does not establish payment. Check for the disclosure.
- Mistake: “Anything that looks commercial is an ad.” Correction: A retailer, service provider, or product page can rank organically. Commercial subject matter is not a disclosure.
- Mistake: “A highly relevant result must be organic.” Correction: Microsoft lists query and other information as possible ad-selection inputs. Relevance does not settle the classification.
- Mistake: “Every Bing page uses the same label.” Correction: Microsoft confirms labeling but does not establish one required wording or visual treatment for all contexts.
- Mistake: “MSN’s label proves Bing’s exact UI.” Correction: MSN’s FAQ addresses MSN native stories and display ads; keep that guidance separate from Bing web search.
- Mistake: “Payment can buy a better organic ranking.” Correction: Microsoft says payment cannot improve an organic blue-link position. Advertising and organic ranking are separate.
- Mistake: “One ad explains every result on the page.” Correction: Classify placements individually. A disclosure on one block does not automatically describe neighboring links.
- Mistake: “A single impression reveals why I was targeted.” Correction: Microsoft lists possible signals, not a guaranteed explanation for one display. Avoid inferring a specific cause.
A quick decision checklist
Use this checklist when you need to classify a result quickly:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Have you examined the entire result block for an advertising disclosure?
- Are you relying on the disclosure rather than the result’s rank, color, or commercial topic?
- Have you treated each placement separately?
- Are you avoiding a claim that one label, position, or ad count is universal?
- If the result looks personalized, have you separated “why it may have been selected” from “whether it is paid”?
- Are you looking at Bing search rather than importing an MSN label rule?
- If you are comparing devices or screenshots, have you noted the relevant context instead of assuming the layouts must match?
A “yes” to the first three questions is usually enough to classify the placement. The remaining checks prevent overconfident explanations about layout and targeting.
What Microsoft’s policy means for advertisers and searchers
For advertisers, the practical boundary is clear: buying a search advertisement can put a paid placement in front of people who use Bing, but it does not purchase a higher organic blue-link position. Organic visibility and advertising visibility should therefore be evaluated as different channels.
Best Value
For searchers, the boundary explains why a paid placement may sit beside ordinary results without changing the organic ranking system. The presence of an ad is not evidence that the surrounding blue links were bought, and an advertiser’s payment does not make an adjacent organic result sponsored.
Microsoft’s official page, “How Bing delivers search results,” states: “Bing does not allow websites to improve their organic ranking positions (the ‘blue links’) through payment.” That sentence describes the policy distinction; the disclosure on the page is what lets you identify an individual paid placement.
When the label is difficult to notice
If you cannot find a disclosure, do not replace the missing evidence with a guess based on rank or design. Re-read the full placement, account for the possibility that the page is using a different layout, and compare only what is actually shown in that Bing context. Microsoft’s documentation does not provide a universal location or exact string that can be used as a fallback test.
For a screenshot, report only what is visible: the query, the relevant context if known, the result, and whether an advertising disclosure appears. If the screenshot cuts off part of the result block or omits surrounding interface text, say that the classification cannot be established from the image alone rather than labeling it from appearance.
For accessibility or zoomed views, the same principle applies. A changed visual scale can make a disclosure easier or harder to notice, but it does not change the underlying distinction between paid and organic placement. Use the disclosure exposed by the interface, not a color-only judgment.
The shortest accurate explanation to share
Tell someone: “On Bing, identify the paid-ad disclosure attached to the result. Do not assume the top result is sponsored, and do not assume a relevant or commercial result is organic. Microsoft says payment cannot improve an organic blue-link ranking, and the exact ad label and position can vary by context.”
