Online grooming is the deliberate building of trust, affection, authority or dependence with a child so an offender can obtain sexual contact, sexual images, money, access or an in-person meeting. It can involve a stranger, a known adult or someone who has gained the family’s confidence. Look for patterns—secrecy, unusually intense attention, sexual requests, threats and pressure to meet—rather than relying on one isolated behavior. If a child may be in immediate physical danger, call emergency services now. Otherwise, stay calm, preserve evidence, secure the child’s accounts and report suspected exploitation promptly.
What online grooming is—and where it happens
Grooming is a process, not a single message. An offender may first present as a supportive friend, romantic interest, mentor, teammate, gaming partner or concerned adult. Over time, the person tests boundaries, creates secrecy and makes the child feel responsible for maintaining the relationship. The goal can be sexual conversation, nude images, sexual acts, money, an in-person meeting or continued control.

The person may be a stranger using a false identity, but grooming also occurs when a child already knows the adult through school, sports, faith groups, family friends or the neighborhood. A familiar relationship does not make the behavior safe.

Online enticement includes communicating with someone believed to be a child through the internet with intent to commit a sexual offense or abduction. It can occur on social networks, direct-messaging apps, livestreams, forums and multiplayer games. Sextortion—threatening to expose a child’s intimate image unless the child sends more images, money or complies with another demand—is one form of online exploitation.

Warning patterns to look for
No single sign proves grooming. Children can become private for ordinary developmental reasons, and an unfamiliar online friend is not automatically an offender. Concern rises when several behaviors cluster, intensify quickly or are paired with sexual content, threats or pressure to meet.
| Pattern | What it may look like | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Secrecy and hidden channels | The contact asks the child to hide the relationship, move to a private app, use disappearing messages or delete chats. | Secrecy isolates the child and removes the adults who could challenge the offender’s story. |
| Rapid intensity | Frequent messages, excessive compliments, declarations of love, gifts, money, game credits or promises arrive soon after contact begins. | Fast emotional or material rewards can create obligation and dependence. |
| False identity | The person claims to be a peer, uses another person’s photos, changes age or avoids verifiable video and real-world details. | A false age or identity can conceal an adult and make the child lower their guard. |
| Sexualisation | Conversation turns sexual; the person asks for nude images, requests sexual role-play, shares sexual material or asks intimate questions. | Sexual requests to a child are a serious safeguarding concern, even when framed as a joke or romance. |
| Coercion and threats | The contact threatens to publish an image, tell parents, harm themselves, report the child, end the relationship or cause another consequence if the child refuses. | Threats indicate control. The child’s compliance does not make the conduct consensual or the child responsible. |
| Changes in the child’s behavior | Unusual distress, withdrawal, sleep problems, secrecy, fear, anger, loss of interest or intense protection of a device or account. | A change can signal many problems, but combined with suspicious contact it warrants a calm conversation. |
| Pressure to deceive or meet | The child is asked to lie to caregivers, share a location, send travel details or arrange an in-person meeting. | Moving from online control to physical access increases immediate safety risk. |
How offenders build control
Creating a believable role
An offender may copy a teenager’s profile, claim to share the child’s hobbies or pose as a trusted authority. They can use public posts, game chats and mutual contacts to make the identity appear credible. A profile photo, follower count or shared interest does not verify age.
Testing boundaries
Small requests—keeping a chat private, staying online late, moving to a different app or sending a nonsexual photo—can become tests of compliance. If the child agrees, the offender may escalate to personal details, sexual conversation or images.

Attention, sympathy, gifts and promises can make a child feel that refusing is cruel or ungrateful. The offender may describe the relationship as special and insist that parents or friends “would not understand.”

Using shame and fear
After receiving an intimate image or sexual message, the offender may threaten exposure, contact the child’s school or family, or demand money and more images. The threat is designed to keep the child silent and prolong access.
Talk to your child without closing the conversation
The first response strongly affects whether a child shares more. Your objective is safety and disclosure, not an immediate interrogation or punishment.
- Regulate your reaction. Take a breath, lower your voice and choose a private setting. Shock, anger or threats can make a child fear that telling you caused the problem.
- State support clearly. Say, “You are not in trouble. I’m glad you told me. My job is to help keep you safe.” Repeat that the adult or offender is responsible for the manipulation.
- Invite a narrative. Use open prompts such as “Tell me what happened,” “What did they ask you to do?” and “What would help you feel safe right now?” Let the child use their own words.
- Clarify immediate danger. Ask whether the person knows the child’s location, has threatened to come over, has arranged a meeting, has access to an account or has threatened immediate harm.
- Avoid blame and promises you cannot keep. Do not ask why the child replied, sent an image or kept a secret. Do not promise that nobody else will be told; explain that you may need help from professionals to protect them.
- Agree on the next step. Tell the child what you will do before you do it—save information, secure accounts and contact the appropriate service. Include them in decisions when doing so is safe.
Keep follow-up conversations short and calm. A child may remember details gradually or change their account while frightened; that does not by itself mean they are lying. Avoid repeatedly making them retell the story when a safeguarding professional or investigator can take a formal account.
What to do in the first hour
If there may be immediate physical danger
Call your local emergency number if an offender is on the way, a child has left to meet someone, the person knows where the child is and has made a credible threat, or the child is at immediate risk of assault or abduction. Tell responders the child’s age, current location, the suspected person’s identity and any imminent threat.

If the danger is not immediate
- Keep the child with a trusted adult. Do not let the suspected contact arrange unsupervised travel or a meeting. Do not agree to meet or confront the person yourself.
- Preserve information before changing it. Save the username, profile URL, display name, account ID if visible, dates and times, phone numbers, email addresses, payment details, meeting plans and threats. Take screenshots that include context, not only the most shocking line.
- Do not forward sexual images. Do not email, text or copy intimate images to yourself, friends or investigators. Tell the reporting service that such material exists and follow its secure instructions. Possessing or distributing sexual images of a minor can create additional legal risk even when the child created the image.
- Secure accounts with the child. Change passwords from a trusted device, enable multifactor authentication, review active sessions and recovery email or phone numbers, and remove unknown devices. Preserve evidence before deleting or resetting anything that investigators may need.
- Use platform controls when safe. Report the account for child sexual exploitation or inappropriate adult contact, then block it if blocking will not destroy needed evidence or increase danger. If a platform’s process is unclear, report to law enforcement or a child-protection service first.
- Report promptly. Provide the saved details and explain whether the person is known to the child, whether images or money were involved and whether a meeting was proposed.
How to report online grooming
Reporting routes depend on where the child is located. If the child is in immediate danger, emergency services take priority over an online form.
| Location | Primary action | Additional route |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Report suspected online child exploitation to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline at cybertipline.org and contact local law enforcement or the FBI. | Notify the platform through its safety or child-exploitation reporting channel. Give investigators the account details and explain any immediate threat. |
| United Kingdom | Contact local child-protection services or police. Call 999 when the child is at immediate risk; call 101 when a crime may have been committed but there is no emergency. | Under-18s can contact Childline. The Internet Watch Foundation’s Report Remove tool may help eligible young people address sexual images of themselves. |
| Other countries | Use your national child-protection hotline and police service, following the country’s emergency number for immediate danger. | Report the account to the platform and ask police or a safeguarding professional which specialist service should receive the evidence. |
In the United States, the CyberTipline is the centralized system for suspected online child exploitation. A report can include suspected enticement, sexual images, sextortion and an offender attempting to arrange contact. Reporting does not require you to prove the case; describe what you observed and preserve the original information.
Protect accounts and devices without turning the home into surveillance
Review privacy together
Open the child’s account settings with them. Limit who can send direct messages, comment, add the account to groups or view stories and location data. Disable public friend or follower lists where possible, remove school, address, routine and travel details from profiles, and review older posts for identifying information.
Control contact and location features
Turn off precise location sharing for social, gaming and messaging apps unless there is a clear safety reason to use it. Review photo metadata and automatic geotagging. Check linked accounts and connected apps, because a compromised game or social account can expose private messages elsewhere.

Make supervision predictable
Agree on where devices are charged, when private messaging is allowed and how a child can ask for help without losing access as an automatic punishment. Learn the names of the games, servers and apps the child uses. The FBI recommends ongoing conversations about online behavior, checking profiles and posts, using privacy settings and making a rule that a child never meets an online contact without a caregiver’s knowledge and supervision.
Parental controls can limit age-inappropriate features, but they cannot identify every offender or replace a trusting relationship. Explain what controls do, what they cannot do and when an adult may review an account to address a safety concern.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Responding to sextortion
Sextortion often follows a request for an intimate image, but the offender may also use a manipulated or stolen image. The offender may demand more images, money, sexual acts or contact with other children. Paying or sending more material rarely ends the threats and can provide leverage for further demands.
- Tell the child they are not responsible for the offender’s threats and will not be punished for asking for help.
- Stop negotiating with the offender. Do not promise payment, arrange a meeting or threaten retaliation.
- Preserve usernames, payment instructions, wallet addresses, phone numbers, threats and timestamps. Do not forward the intimate image.
- Report immediately to the appropriate child-protection service, police and platform. If the offender threatens immediate physical harm, call emergency services.
- Ask a safeguarding professional about image-removal options and support for the child’s anxiety, shame or fear.
Common mistakes that increase risk
- Confronting the suspected offender: A warning can prompt deletion of evidence, escalation or retaliation against the child.
- Taking the device away without preserving information: A blanket confiscation may erase access to accounts or stop a child from reaching help. Secure the account and agree on safer device use instead.
- Blaming the child: Asking why they “fell for it” reinforces the offender’s secrecy and can delay disclosure.
- Forwarding or reposting an image: Sharing illegal sexual material creates further harm and may violate the law.
- Relying only on blocking: Blocking can stop one account but does not report the conduct or address duplicate accounts, saved images or an arranged meeting.
- Treating online contact as harmless because the person claims to be young: Identity and age can be fabricated; evaluate behavior and evidence, not the profile story.
- Waiting for certainty: Safeguarding services and police assess reports. You can report a reasonable suspicion without proving every detail yourself.
A practical family safety plan
Before a problem occurs
- Choose a simple phrase the child can use to signal discomfort without explaining everything immediately.
- Keep a current list of the child’s usernames, major platforms and trusted adults, stored securely rather than publicly.
- Teach that no online contact should demand secrecy, sexual images, money, passwords or an unsupervised meeting.
- Practice leaving a chat, blocking an account, reporting a message and asking an adult for help.
- Explain that an adult may need to involve professionals when there is exploitation or immediate danger, while promising to keep the child informed.
When a child is reluctant to talk
Start with a specific, non-accusatory observation: “I noticed you looked upset after that chat. Do you want to tell me about it?” Offer choices—talk now, write it down, speak with another trusted adult or contact a helpline together. Avoid searching publicly for the suspected person or posting accusations. If the child refuses to talk but you have credible evidence of exploitation, report it and seek advice from child-protection professionals anyway.

What the latest figures show
The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children reported 1.4 million online-enticement reports in 2025, up 158% from 546,333 in 2024, and more than 80,000 sextortion reports in 2025. These are reports received by that organization, not a count of proven offenses or unique children, and they should not be used to estimate an individual child’s probability of being targeted. They do show why adults should treat secrecy, sexual requests, threats and meeting pressure as safeguarding concerns rather than ordinary online drama.
NCMEC president and CEO Michelle DeLaune has explained that adult offenders often groom children and teens in ways that make it difficult for them to recognize the lies and false promises. That difficulty is a feature of the manipulation, not evidence that the child welcomed the abuse.
Supporting recovery after disclosure
After reporting, maintain ordinary routines where possible: sleep, school, meals, exercise and contact with safe friends. Ask the child what information they want shared with relatives or school staff. A pediatrician, licensed mental-health professional or specialist child-advocacy service can help with anxiety, shame, sleep problems and trauma symptoms.

Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Immediate danger or planned meeting: Call emergency services, keep the child with a trusted adult and provide responders with the person’s identity, location and threats.
- Sexual request, image, threat or coercive secrecy: Stay calm, preserve account details, do not forward images, secure accounts and report to the appropriate service and platform.
- Suspicious but incomplete information: Talk with the child using open questions, review privacy settings together and seek advice from child-protection professionals rather than confronting the contact.
- Any disclosure: Say the child is not in trouble, explain each next step and keep responsibility on the offender.
