1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNever paste or run a command supplied by a webpage, email, fake error, or CAPTCHA to prove you are human or fix ordinary browsing. If you have not run it, stop and report the prompt; if you have, contact your organization’s IT or security team promptly.
What is a ClickFix attack?
ClickFix is a social-engineering technique in which a lure offers an apparent solution—such as fixing a browser error or completing a CAPTCHA—but directs the user to copy and execute malicious code. MITRE ATT&CK classifies malicious copy-and-paste as User Execution: Malicious Copy and Paste (T1204.004). Its entry, last modified May 12, 2026, lists Windows, macOS, and Linux, so the technique is not limited to Windows.
The critical difference from a conventional download lure is that the victim is asked to initiate execution. A file-download warning or blocked attachment may not stop someone who follows the page’s instructions and launches a command themselves.
How the attack unfolds
- A user reaches a lure through a phishing email, malicious advertisement, or compromised website.
- A familiar-looking error, update notice, CAPTCHA, or support message claims something needs fixing.
- The user is told to copy text and run it in a command interface. On Windows, Microsoft has observed instructions involving the Run dialog, Windows Terminal, and PowerShell; lures can target other operating systems too.
- A command interpreter or legitimate system utility may retrieve or launch further content. The code can be obfuscated or encoded, making its purpose hard to judge at a glance.
- A payload may then steal information, provide remote access, load additional malware, or establish persistence.
Microsoft has documented infostealers, remote access tools, loaders, and rootkits among observed payloads. These are examples, not a complete list of what a future lure may deliver. See Microsoft’s analysis of ClickFix.

How to recognize the lure
Be suspicious whenever a page or message asks you to open a command interpreter or paste code as part of browsing, verification, troubleshooting, or an update. Websites and CAPTCHA checks do not need you to run shell commands to prove you are human.
- It tells you to open a command tool. Watch for instructions to use Windows Run, PowerShell, Windows Terminal, Command Prompt, macOS Terminal, or another command interpreter.
- It supplies text for you to copy and paste. Treat encoded, obfuscated, multi-line, or unfamiliar commands—especially commands that retrieve content from the internet—as dangerous.
- It ties execution to an ordinary web task. A browser error, CAPTCHA, update notice, missing extension, or support message is not a reason to run a command.
- It relies on familiar branding or urgency. A convincing imitation of a browser, company, social platform, or CAPTCHA provider does not make the command safe.
Microsoft has reported lures imitating browser crash pages, Word Online, reCAPTCHA, Cloudflare Turnstile, and Discord. HHS HC3 also documented fake browser-update and CAPTCHA prompts in its October 29, 2024 sector alert. Those examples describe observed campaigns, not a current or exhaustive set of indicators.

What to do if you encounter ClickFix
If you have not run the command
- Do not paste or execute the supplied text.
- Close the page or message and report it through your employer’s security channel if this is a work device or account.
- If the prompt claims an account or service has a problem, open the service independently or contact support using a trusted route—not a link or phone number in the prompt.
If you already ran it
- Contact your organization’s IT or security team promptly and follow its instructions. Do not keep interacting with the lure.
- If it is safe to do so, preserve the page or message, the time you ran the command, and any visible command text or security alert details.
- Let the security team investigate command-line and process activity, downloads and temporary-file changes, scheduled tasks or other persistence, and outbound network connections. They should contain and remediate the device under their incident-response procedures.
The available official guidance provides investigation leads rather than a complete home-user recovery playbook. If this happened on a personal device, use a trusted support or security professional for incident-specific recovery advice rather than running more commands supplied by the page.

No single control guarantees prevention. Microsoft reported that its Defender Experts observed thousands of devices per month with an executed ClickFix command in early 2025, even when EDR was present. That is Microsoft’s observation, not a general industry infection rate. A practical defense combines controls across the attack chain:

Make the behavior rule explicit
Train users to understand what they copy and paste, and make the rule memorable: a website or CAPTCHA should not ask them to run a shell command. Encourage prompt reporting without blame so suspicious pages reach security teams quickly. Microsoft recommends user education in its ClickFix guidance.
Limit unnecessary command execution paths
Where business needs permit, restrict access to Run and command interpreters, control application execution, and consider limiting native Windows binaries launched from Run. PowerShell Constrained Language mode may be appropriate in some environments. Test restrictions against legitimate workflows before broad deployment; a control that blocks necessary work may prompt users to seek unsafe workarounds.

Harden scripts and endpoints
Enable PowerShell script-block logging and configure endpoint protections to inspect scripts and process behavior. Microsoft describes attack-surface-reduction rules for obfuscated scripts and script-launched downloads. Keep endpoint protection current, and ensure the resulting telemetry is available to the people who investigate alerts.
Protect email, browsing, and network traffic
Use phishing and attachment protections, link inspection at click time where available, and web or network protections to block known malicious sites and downloads. Blocking command-and-control domains before a first-stage payload is retrieved can disrupt the chain, according to Microsoft.

Correlate signals instead of relying on one alert
Review suspicious RunMRU data, encoded or obfuscated PowerShell, execution of living-off-the-land binaries, unexpected script downloads, temporary-file writes, scheduled tasks, and unusual outbound traffic in context. MITRE’s detection guidance describes correlating browser or email activity with suspicious interpreter arguments, possible file creation, and an external connection. These are investigation leads, not proof on their own; validate them against surrounding activity and user context.
When assessing controls, compare which stage they cover—email, browser, user execution, endpoint, or network—along with supported operating systems, whether they prevent or only alert, retained telemetry, investigation workflow, operational burden, and compatibility with legitimate work.
