ClickFix is a social-engineering scam, not a legitimate browser repair. A webpage or message invents an error, fake CAPTCHA, browser update, or “verify you are human” step and tells you to press Win+R, paste text into a Windows shell, and press Enter. That pasted text can download malware without exploiting the browser.
Never paste or run a command supplied by an unexpected webpage, CAPTCHA, document viewer, or message. Close the page, open the vendor’s site yourself, and use current security protection. If you already executed the command, disconnect the device, involve IT or an incident-response professional, and change credentials from a known-clean device.

What ClickFix malware scams are
A problem-and-solution story
ClickFix is the name commonly used for a pastejacking technique. Attackers place a convincing “problem” on a compromised website, phishing page, advertisement, email, or chat message, then offer a fake fix. The page may claim that a document cannot display, a browser needs repair, a microphone or headset is unavailable, a video meeting failed, or a security check must be completed.
The proposed solution is deliberately operational: copy text, open a trusted command interface, paste the text, and execute it. A victim may be told to use Win+R (the Windows Run dialog), Win+X, Ctrl+V, and Enter. The copied material can be an obfuscated PowerShell, mshta, Command Prompt, Windows Terminal, or another shell command. Once the victim presses Enter, the shell—not the browser—starts the attacker’s code.

Why it is not a normal browser exploit
ClickFix relies on the user authorizing an action. The browser can display a fake warning, but the decisive step is pasting and running a command in an operating-system tool. That lets a campaign work even when the browser is fully patched and no attachment is opened. Similar lures can be adapted for Windows, macOS, or Linux by changing the terminal instructions, although the documented Windows flow is especially common.
How a ClickFix attack unfolds
- Entry: You follow a phishing link, encounter a compromised legitimate site, or see a malicious advertisement, document, or shared message.
- Imitation: The page copies the appearance and wording of a familiar service or operating-system message. Observed themes include Chrome, Edge, Facebook, Google Meet, Word, OneDrive, PDF viewers, reCAPTCHA, and unofficial blue-screen notices.
- Urgency: It says content will not load, audio will not work, access will be blocked, or a human check has failed unless you “Fix It,” “Verify,” or “Repair” immediately.
- Keyboard coaching: Step-by-step instructions tell you which shortcut to press and where to paste. This coaching is the key behavioral signal: a normal CAPTCHA or update does not need you to paste a command into a shell.
- Execution: The command contacts an attacker-controlled location, downloads or launches a payload, and may establish persistence or steal information. The page can then show a success message, leaving the victim unaware that the real action happened in the background.
How to recognize the scam before you run anything
1. An unexpected “fix” appears inside a webpage
A browser tab can report that a site cannot render correctly, but it cannot legitimately require a command pasted into Windows Run to repair the browser. Treat prompts such as “Fix It,” “Repair browser,” “Enable audio,” “Resolve performance issue,” or “Verify you are human” as hostile when they arrive unexpectedly.
2. The instructions mention shell shortcuts
The strongest warning is a request to press Win+R, open PowerShell or Terminal, use Command Prompt, or paste with Ctrl+V. A page that dictates a sequence ending in Enter is asking you to cross from viewing content into executing code.
3. The page imitates a trusted interface
Attackers reproduce logos, colors, browser chrome, error dialogs, blue screens, meeting controls, and CAPTCHA layouts. The visual design does not prove the message came from the represented company. A web page can draw an image that looks like an operating-system alert; genuine system notifications are delivered by the operating system itself, not rendered as ordinary page content.

4. The pasted text is long, encoded, or unfamiliar
Commands may contain long strings, Base64-like characters, escaped text, download URLs, or several commands joined together. Obfuscation is intended to hide the action from a quick glance. Never rely on a search result or a page’s claim that the text is safe. If you did not create and verify the command yourself, do not paste it.
5. The request conflicts with normal support practice
Legitimate vendors publish update or troubleshooting steps on their own support domains. They do not ask an unprompted visitor to disable protection, bypass a warning, or execute a mystery command. Navigate to the vendor’s address manually rather than using a link or phone number displayed in the alert.
6. Pressure and unusual timing
Countdowns, repeated pop-ups, claims that access will be lost, and instructions to keep the tab open are persuasion tactics. Close the tab or message. If it reopens, close the browser process and start a fresh session; do not continue the scripted interaction.
What can happen after the command runs
ClickFix campaigns have delivered information stealers and remote-access malware, including Lumma Stealer, DCRAT, NetSupport RAT, DarkGate, Vidar, and Latrodectus. The exact payload changes by campaign, so a clean-looking desktop or a brief fake “success” message is not evidence that nothing happened.

The Center for Internet Security Cyber Threat Intelligence team wrote in 2025 that ClickFix became prevalent because it can target multiple operating systems for data or financial theft and malware distribution. The technique does not guarantee every execution will cause an infection, but it removes the browser’s normal security boundary by asking the user to authorize the next step.
How widespread is ClickFix?
Microsoft Threat Intelligence reported in 2025 that campaigns were targeting thousands of enterprise and end-user devices globally every day. Microsoft said campaigns had been observed since early 2024 and included Lumma Stealer. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center (HHS HC3) described an early TA571 campaign that sent more than 100,000 messages beginning in March 2024, using fake Chrome, Word, OneDrive, Google Meet, Facebook, PDF, and reCAPTCHA identities.
CIS CTI reported that ClickFix represented more than a third of all non-malware Albert Network Monitoring and Management alerts in the first half of 2025. These figures describe observed campaigns and alerts, not a global victim total. No authoritative public source establishes a dependable infection-rate percentage, total number of victims, or consumer cleanup success rate, so such numbers should not be inferred from the campaign counts.

What to do when a page asks you to paste a command
- Stop at the instruction. Do not copy the text, open Run or Terminal, or press Enter. If text is already on your clipboard, replace it by copying a harmless word or clearing the clipboard.
- Close the page or message. Use the tab’s close control. If the page fights to stay open, close the browser window or end the browser process through the operating system.
- Start from a known address. Type the vendor’s domain yourself or use a bookmark you created previously. Check for the correct domain and HTTPS, but remember that HTTPS alone does not make a page trustworthy.
- Update through normal channels. Use the browser’s built-in About or Update screen, the operating system’s update settings, or the application’s documented updater—not a command supplied by a pop-up.
- Report the lure. In a workplace, send the URL or message to the security team without forwarding the active link to colleagues. On a personal device, report the phishing message to the service that delivered it and the site operator when an abuse channel is available.
If you clicked “Fix It” or executed the command
If you only clicked and did not run anything
Clicking a fake button is less dangerous than executing its command, but it can trigger downloads, redirects, or browser-permission changes. Close the page, inspect the browser’s download list, remove any file you did not intentionally obtain, and review recently installed extensions and notification permissions. Run a full scan with current security software. If the device is managed, notify IT even when no obvious symptom appears.

If you pasted and pressed Enter
- Isolate the device. Disconnect Wi-Fi and wired networking, or use the organization’s approved isolation procedure. Do not connect removable drives or sign in to additional accounts from the device.
- Preserve evidence. Keep the suspicious message, URL, timestamp, shell window, security alerts, and browser download history. Do not repeatedly rerun the command to see what it does; that can worsen the incident.
- Notify the right responder. Tell your employer’s IT or security team immediately. For a personal computer containing sensitive data, contact a reputable incident-response or malware-removal professional.
- Use a clean device for credentials. Change passwords for email, banking, password managers, cloud storage, and other important accounts from a device you trust. Revoke active sessions and refresh recovery codes where the service supports it. Enable multifactor authentication, preferably with a phishing-resistant method.
- Scan and assess. Run a full scan with updated security software as directed by IT. A scan result alone does not prove that credentials or cookies were not stolen; responders may need to examine logs, persistence locations, and account activity.
- Rebuild when warranted. If remote access, credential theft, security-tool tampering, or business-system access is possible, a controlled reimage or professional forensic assessment is safer than deleting one suspicious file. Preserve evidence before wiping a business device, following your organization’s policy.
- Watch accounts and systems. Look for new mailbox rules, unfamiliar sign-ins, password-reset messages, financial transactions, or unusual cloud activity. Report suspected fraud to the affected service and financial institution promptly.
These steps are incident-handling precautions based on the documented risks of credential theft, data exfiltration, remote access, and lateral movement. There is no universal consumer cleanup command that can safely remove every ClickFix payload.

- Adopt one rule: never paste or run a command supplied by a webpage, unsolicited message, unexpected CAPTCHA, or pop-up.
- Keep the operating system, browser, applications, and extensions updated. Remove extensions you no longer use and review their permissions.
- Use current real-time antivirus and browser or web protection. Microsoft recommends SmartScreen-capable browsers, cloud-delivered protection, and network and web protection.
- Use a standard user account for daily work when practical. Keep administrator credentials separate so an accidental command has fewer privileges.
- Back up important files to a protected destination and test restoring them. Backups do not prevent theft, but they reduce pressure to pay after destructive malware.
- Turn on multifactor authentication and use a password manager. Unique passwords limit damage when a stolen cookie or password exposes one service.
- Teach family members that a web page cannot legitimately demand a shell command to pass a human check or repair a browser.
Controls for organizations
Reduce the chance of delivery
Filter phishing email, malicious attachments, and newly registered or suspicious domains. Block known malicious URLs at the web gateway and protect browsers with reputation and download controls. Train users with realistic examples that show the keyboard sequence, not just a generic warning about phishing.
Limit execution and privilege
Use least privilege and application allowlisting where feasible. Consider policies that restrict unnecessary access to Run, PowerShell, scripting hosts, and unsigned executables. Controls should warn on or block multiline paste into terminals when that fits the organization’s workflows; exceptions need a documented business reason.

Enable PowerShell script-block logging and forward endpoint, identity, browser, email, and network events to a central monitoring system. Alert on unusual script interpreters, downloads followed by credential access, security-tool tampering, new persistence, and logins from impossible or unfamiliar locations. Microsoft specifically lists PowerShell script-block logging, cloud-delivered protection, and network and web protection among its recommendations.
Best Value
Prepare the response
Define who isolates a workstation, who resets sessions and tokens, and who contacts legal, privacy, or business leaders. Preserve the original message and indicators. Review mailbox rules, identity-provider sessions, endpoint telemetry, and lateral movement before returning the device to service. A fast, practiced process is more reliable than asking an employee to diagnose an obfuscated command.
How to evaluate security protection against ClickFix
No single product category addresses every stage. Compare protections against the following capabilities, and distinguish a personal device from an organization that needs centralized policy and evidence.
| Capability | What to look for | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Web and phishing blocking | Reputation checks, malicious-site blocking, download warnings, and protection against spoofed login pages | Everyone; especially useful before a lure is displayed |
| Real-time and cloud malware detection | Behavioral detection, cloud analysis, tamper protection, and rapid definition or model updates | Everyone; essential after a command launches a payload |
| Script and command-line visibility | PowerShell and shell telemetry, script-block logging, parent-child process alerts, and controls for scripting hosts | Organizations and technically managed households |
| Email and attachment protection | Sender authentication checks, URL rewriting or scanning, attachment sandboxing, and impersonation detection | Organizations and anyone receiving frequent unsolicited files |
| Centralized logging and policy | SIEM or equivalent collection, endpoint isolation, policy enforcement, and searchable identity and device events | Managed fleets; generally unavailable on a single unmanaged consumer device |
| Least privilege and allowlisting | Standard-user operation, approved software lists, and restrictions on unsigned or untrusted execution | Businesses and high-risk personal systems |
Protection is a backstop, not permission to follow the prompt. Microsoft’s plain-language advice is to ensure users understand what they copy and paste. That behavior blocks the attack before a security tool has to recognize an unfamiliar payload.
