How to Recognize AI-Generated Images, Video, and Audio

There is no single visual or audio clue that proves a file was made with AI. The dependable approach is to combine the file’s source and context with provenance records, provider-specific watermark checks, platform disclosures, and independent verification of the claim. A detector result can show that one supported signal was found; it cannot, by itself, establish that the media is authentic, that its subject is real, or that every frame and sound is trustworthy.

This guide explains what each signal means, how to check a file with current tools, what a negative result does (and does not) tell you, and how to report uncertainty responsibly. Operational details below reflect official guidance available on 13 October 2026.

Start with context, not artifacts

Before zooming in on a hand, listening for an unusual voice, or uploading a file to a detector, ask where the media came from and what it is supposed to prove. Context often provides stronger leads than appearance.

  • Identify the earliest source. Record the account, page, message, or site that first published the file. A repost without attribution is weaker evidence than a traceable original.
  • Assess the publisher. Check whether the account has a history of accurate reporting, a verifiable identity, and a reason to post the material. A trusted account can still be wrong or hacked, so this is a starting point, not authentication.
  • Compare the surrounding details. Look at the date, location, weather, language, shadows, signage, and event timeline. Details that look or sound unnatural are prompts for checking, not proof of synthesis.
  • Seek independent corroboration. For a consequential event, look for reporting from unrelated reliable organizations, additional camera angles, official records, or witnesses. A provenance record can describe a file without proving the event depicted in it occurred.

Meta’s published guidance similarly recommends considering account trustworthiness and unnatural details while acknowledging that neither is a universal test.

What Content Credentials and C2PA can tell you

Content Credentials are signed provenance data based on the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) standard. When a compatible camera, editor, or generative tool creates a manifest, it can record the signer, the originating application, and subsequent edits. The same system can describe ordinary photographs and recordings as well as AI-assisted media.

How to interpret a credential

  • Valid, intact credential: The signature and recorded history have not been invalidated. You can learn what tool signed the file and which edits were recorded.
  • Credential showing an AI tool: This is evidence that the named tool participated in the documented production or edit. It does not prove that every element was generated, that the person or event shown is real, or that the claim attached to the file is true.
  • Missing credential: The file may never have carried one, may come from an unsupported application, or may have lost its metadata during export, screenshotting, conversion, or reposting. Absence is inconclusive.
  • Invalid credential: A broken signature or changed file means the recorded history cannot be trusted as intact. Preserve the file and treat the manifest as a lead for further verification rather than as proof of either authenticity or deception.

Google describes Content Credentials as origin-and-history information that can help users make informed decisions, not as a way to tell whether an image, video, or audio file is “definitely AI-generated.”

Provider watermarks answer a narrower question

Some AI providers embed an invisible watermark in generated or edited media. A verifier looks for that provider’s signal; it does not classify all possible AI systems.

Google SynthID and Gemini verification

Google says its SynthID technology can identify signals in media generated or edited with supported Google AI models. Google also reports that SynthID has watermarked more than 100 billion images and videos and 60,000 years of audio. That is a Google-reported deployment volume, not an accuracy rate or independent measurement.

Google’s Gemini verification experience can check supported files for SynthID and compatible Content Credentials. Its help guidance states that you can check one file at a time, with a maximum file size of 100 MB; videos must be shorter than 90 seconds and audio shorter than one hour. The same guidance describes an approximate rolling daily quota of 10 image checks, 10 video checks totaling up to five minutes, and 10 audio checks totaling up to three hours. Limits, supported formats, sign-in requirements, and availability can change.

Google says SynthID will usually survive resizing, recoloring, compression, and similar edits, but also warns that many alterations can make the signal undetectable. A failed check therefore means only that no detectable supported signal was found in that file.

OpenAI’s verification checker

OpenAI says its checker examines supported image and audio files for supported OpenAI signals, which can include SynthID or a trusted C2PA manifest. A positive result indicates likely generation by an OpenAI model associated with the detected signal. A negative result means that no supported OpenAI signal was found; it does not establish that the file came from a camera or human performer. Coverage varies by product, model, export path, file type, and later transformations.

What a positive result does not establish

Even when a provider signal is detected, it does not tell you whether the depicted person consented, whether the scene is staged, whether the accompanying caption is accurate, who owns the work, or why it was posted. Treat the result as provenance evidence about a signal, then verify the surrounding claim separately.

A practical five-step verification workflow

  1. Preserve the received file. Download the original available to you and keep the message, post URL, account name, timestamp, and any accompanying text. Do not rely on a screenshot when the original file can be saved. Reposts, crops, screenshots, transcoding, and messaging-app conversions can remove metadata or weaken a watermark.
  2. Inspect provenance. Use a Content Credentials or C2PA viewer when one is available. Note the signer, named tool, creation time, and edit chain. Save a copy of the displayed record. A supported intact record is useful history; no record is not evidence of a camera original.
  3. Run the relevant provider check. Use Google’s Gemini verification for the supported SynthID and credential checks it offers, or OpenAI’s checker for supported OpenAI signals. Confirm that the file meets the current size, duration, format, and quota rules before interpreting the result.
  4. Verify the real-world claim. Search for the earliest publication, independent reporting, location details, official statements, weather or map evidence, and other recordings. If the media supposedly documents a crime, disaster, war, election, or public-health event, do not treat a watermark result as a substitute for corroboration.
  5. Report exactly what you know. Use wording such as “a Google SynthID signal was detected,” “the C2PA manifest names an editing tool,” or “no supported signal was found.” Avoid “proven fake” or “definitely real” unless independent evidence supports that stronger conclusion.

Signal comparison: strengths and limits

Signal Useful for Important limits
Content Credentials / C2PA Signed information about origin and recorded edits when the manifest is present and supported. Can be absent, invalid, unsupported, or stripped. It does not prove the depicted claim, categorical AI generation, or the intent of the creator.
Invisible provider watermark, such as SynthID Finding a supported provider’s embedded signal in the submitted file. Coverage is limited to participating providers, models, media types, and file paths. Transformations can defeat detection; a negative result is inconclusive.
Platform label or creator disclosure A visible notice that a platform or poster identified synthetic or altered content. Depends on voluntary disclosure and the platform’s detection coverage. Meta has said invisible markers can be stripped and that not all AI content can be identified.
Human visual or audio inspection Finding anomalies that deserve closer checking and comparing a file with its context. People miss increasingly realistic synthesis and can mistake compression, dubbing, or unusual photography for AI. An odd hand, lip movement, reflection, or voice is not proof.
General-purpose detector Possible triage when the provider, method, training data, and test scope are clearly documented. No comparable independent current benchmark establishes a universal accuracy rate across image, video, and audio detectors after common edits or recompression. Scores should not be presented as definitive classification.

Why familiar “AI tells” fail

Hands, teeth, text, and reflections

Generation systems have historically produced malformed fingers, inconsistent teeth, unreadable signs, and impossible reflections. Those failures can be useful clues, but they are not a test. Camera artifacts, motion blur, lens distortion, low resolution, stitching, and ordinary retouching can create the same appearance. Newer systems may avoid the obvious errors, while a carefully edited real photograph can contain them.

Faces and skin

Perfectly smooth skin, mismatched earrings, irregular hair, or a face that appears to change between frames may justify closer inspection. None proves synthesis: beauty filters, portrait lenses, frame interpolation, lighting, and compression can produce similar effects. Compare multiple frames and seek the original rather than relying on a single enlarged crop.

Lip-sync and voice impressions

People can notice a mouth that seems slightly out of time, an unnatural breath, or a voice with unusual cadence. Dubbing, packet loss, room acoustics, a non-native speaker, and aggressive noise reduction can look or sound similar. Use those observations to decide what to verify, not to issue a categorical verdict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Metadata and file format

Metadata can show a camera model, editing application, creation date, or export path, but it is easy to remove or rewrite. A clean metadata panel does not prove an original recording, and an editing-software tag does not prove that the underlying scene was generated. Re-encoding by a social platform commonly changes technical fields.

Platform labels are useful but incomplete

Platforms may combine creator disclosures with C2PA or IPTC information to label synthetic or materially altered media. A label is evidence that the platform or poster identified a condition under its policy; it is not a universal authenticity certificate. Labels can be missing when a creator does not disclose, when a platform cannot recognize the file, or when a marker is stripped during editing or upload.

Meta’s 2024 published guidance explicitly says it is not yet possible to identify all AI-generated content and that invisible markers can be removed. Treat that statement as a limitation on platform-level coverage, not as a claim about every current implementation.

How to choose and interpret a verification tool

When deciding whether to upload a file, evaluate the tool on five questions:

  1. Which signal does it check? Is it reading a signed C2PA manifest, looking for a provider watermark, or making a statistical classification?
  2. Does it cover this file? Confirm the provider, model family, image/video/audio type, codec, container, and export path. “AI detector” is not a guarantee of coverage.
  3. What transformations can it tolerate? Check stated behavior after cropping, resizing, compression, screen recording, clipping, or re-export. Keep the untouched file for the most informative check.
  4. What does the result actually say? Prefer a report that names the signal and its scope. Be cautious when a tool converts a provider-specific finding into a broad real/fake label.
  5. What are the access constraints? Check sign-in, privacy terms, maximum size and duration, supported formats, regional availability, and daily quotas before sending sensitive material.

Do not publish a detector’s percentage as a universal accuracy figure. The official guidance considered here does not provide a comparable, independent set of false-positive and false-negative rates for general-purpose image, video, and audio detectors after ordinary online transformations.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When no signal is found

A negative result has several possible explanations:

  • The file was made with an unsupported model or provider.
  • The model supports a signal, but the export path did not preserve it.
  • The file was cropped, recompressed, recolored, screen-recorded, or otherwise altered enough to prevent detection.
  • The media predates the provider’s watermarking or credential system.
  • The file is not AI-generated.

Because these possibilities cannot be distinguished from a negative check alone, say “no supported signal was detected” rather than “this is human-made.” Try the original file, inspect provenance, and return to context and corroboration.

Applying the workflow to different media

Still images

Save the highest-quality original, inspect credentials, and check the provider most plausibly involved. Compare the image with earlier versions and reverse-searchable reporting or location evidence where appropriate. A screenshot of a social-media post is a poor substitute for the uploaded file because it may contain neither the original metadata nor an intact watermark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Video

Preserve the complete file rather than a clipped screen recording. Note the frame rate, audio track, captions, and cuts. Check a supported verifier within its duration limit, then examine whether the claimed time and place match independent footage. A single real frame can be inserted into a synthetic sequence, and a real recording can be misleadingly captioned, so provenance and context must cover the whole claim.

Audio

Keep the original recording and any accompanying transcript. Listen for anomalies only as leads; background noise, telephone codecs, room echo, and editing can change a genuine voice. Use a supported audio checker when the file fits its current limits, inspect any credentials, and verify the speaker, date, location, and event independently. A signal about how a file was generated does not establish that the words attributed to a person were actually spoken in the claimed setting.

Handling high-stakes material

For allegations involving elections, public safety, violence, fraud, health, or a named individual, preserve an evidence trail: the original download, post details, hashes if your organization uses them, screenshots of the page, verifier output, and notes about every transformation. Restrict access to sensitive recordings and avoid uploading private material to an unfamiliar service.

Separate three questions in your notes and publication:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. How was this file produced or edited? Credentials and provider signals may help answer this.
  2. Is the file intact? A valid manifest and an unaltered original provide stronger evidence than a repost.
  3. Is the claim true? Independent reporting, records, witnesses, and physical-world checks are required.

A “yes” to one question does not answer the others. For example, a genuine camera file can carry a false caption, while an AI-generated illustration can accurately represent a fictional or explanatory scene if it is labeled honestly.

What the EU rules change—and what they do not

The European Commission says the transparency obligations in Article 50 of the EU AI Act apply from 2 August 2026. The related Code of Practice is a voluntary compliance tool, while the underlying Article 50 transparency requirements are legal obligations. The framework covers defined duties for providers marking certain AI-generated outputs and for deployers labeling certain deepfakes and AI-generated public-interest text.

These are EU rules with scope determined by the regulation, the role of the organization, and the relevant use case. They are not a worldwide requirement that every synthetic file carry a visible label, and they do not turn a label or missing label into proof of authenticity. Organizations should obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice for compliance decisions.

A clear language guide for publishing or sharing

  • Use: “The file contains a valid C2PA record naming [the recorded tool].”
  • Use: “The verifier detected a supported signal associated with [the provider].”
  • Use: “No supported signal was found in the submitted file.”
  • Use: “The visual anomaly warrants verification, but does not prove AI generation.”
  • Avoid: “The detector proved this is fake,” unless you have independent evidence that supports that exact conclusion.
  • Avoid: “No watermark means it came from a camera.” That inference is not valid.

The most defensible conclusion usually names the evidence, its scope, and the remaining uncertainty. That is more useful to readers than a confidence score detached from the file’s origin and the real-world claim.
